    • Hello world!

Boy, but has it been a while since I came here. Really should drop by more often.

Life has gone uphill since my last journal (robbery, fire, working with roofers): I now have an awesome job (garbage man, which doesn't sound great but it pays an enormous amount and is an amazing workout every day), my camera collection is now in the 20's, I have actual muscles for the first time in my life, achieving a major bucket list goal, I'm going rock climbing almost every day (and actually waiting for registration to open for a climbing competition right now), and I'm moving into a downtown (core) loft at the end of the month!

Not all roses. I am, of course a garbage man now, which in and of itself is great, but it's not fun being looked down upon, especially when I've done it now and know it's not a justified view. Also knowing I'm both paid more and am more highly educated than most of the people looking down their noses at me. My car is dying, but I'm getting something rugged and mountain-able at the end of the month.

      Photography continues:

    • So here's just another little update.

      Kaatman

So! A lot has happened since I last visited here. I've dropped out of university, moved halfway across the country, and now I'm working in outdoor construction in one of the more inhospitable places on earth for buckets of money.

Long story short, I moved to Alberta and became a roofer to pay for photography school.

Also my car got broken into, my camera and climbing gear was stolen, then my apartment complex burned to the ground and left me homeless. Link

So life has been generally awesome for me lately.

To lighten the mood, here are some pictures I've taken recently:

Many things happening in my life right now. I'm feeling an enormous amount of stress. Besides some serious school and work considerations that are causing me some great grief, I'm running out of medical insurance, and one of my teeth is falling apart, which is a personal nightmare of mine. I have a solid 7 straight days of work, and a series of dentist & other appointments. I don't like the dentist, I'm not good with pain coming from the teeth.

There is a major upside to this: I become the most creative under stress. I have a series of potentially very interesting pictures that I can't get off the camera (I don't have a CF card reader), I've been trying to work with time-lapse, and I started making a bucket list.

This is what I've got so far (I thought of the more grandiose things first, obviously):

-Walk the Great Wall of China
      -Jump from a Plane
      -More Bacon
      -Climb Mount Kilimanjaro
      -Explore a Sunken Shipwreck
      -Sell a Photograph
      -Sail on a Tall-ship
      -Visit the Collosium in Rome
-Go somewhere no-one has ever been before.
      -See the Aurora Borialis
-See a big (African) cat in the wild.
-See a Kabuki theater production in Japan.
      -Grow a Bonsai Tree
      -Be Silent for a week
-Say: "Quick, follow that car!" And mean it.

      What's on your bucket list?

    • Thanks for me gla-memories.

Long day. Chatted with my temporarily- returned roommate. Went downtown and wandered. Watched some very cool busking shows, met some interesting panhandlers. Explored an abandoned fenced lot downtown and found a cool photo spot for better weather. Had a bike tire pop half a dozen kilometers from home, Got stuck in the rain. Went food shopping. Learned that paper shopping bags, rain, useless bikes, hard cement and glass containers don't mix at all. Had a friend drop by, ended up hosting dinner for a couple people (found glass in the meat I'd bought once we started eating), had a spontaneous movie night with cheese-cake.

The day went up, then down, then ended on a high note. Can't ask for much better than that, really.

Also, I have somewhere around 10 cameras now. Awesome.

    • I got another camera!

      Kaatman

That brings my total up to 4. And to think, I'd never owned a camera 3 months ago.

The new one is a Graflex Century Graphic. Ever seen Chicago? Those old billows cameras the press used in it? Yea, one of those.

I'm REALLY excited about getting it up and running.

      I love photography.

    • When did I become a health nut?

      Kaatman

Seriously, I just had a salad for dinner, as I have every night for the past 2 weeks, and followed it up with a huge homemade fruit salad. I exersize now more than I ever have before, though I came close when I swam competitively, and I'm completely giving up processed sugars (anything not directly from fruit, ie: fruit & only fruit). And the funny thing: normally when I'm trying to get healthy, I'm obsessed with weight, I weigh my self at least once a week, and keep track of such thigs. This time? I havn't been interested in knowing my weight at all. I'm not doing this to be better looking, or to feel stronger. I'm doing it because it's good for me. That's never happened before.

For example: I walked over 20 kilometers today (somewhere between 12 and 13 miles). Part of this is that I'm too poor to take the bus, but it's really mostly about health. I go for a walk, I take a couple pictures, sure (almost all my photography is produced during these walks), but I just walk.

What the hell is up with that?

In addition, I may have agreed to become my pseudo-boss's roommate starting at the beginning of July.

    • Aaannd I'm broken.

      Kaatman

      Hurray for broken collarbone!

My life is now on hold. Huzzah!

    • And thing...

      Kaatman

Sooo... It seems I worked myself a lot harder than I should have last night. Now, almost a full day later, I'm haveing a great deal of difficulty walking, and my left arm is nearly useless. Also, my left shoulder hurts. A lot. Constantly. (to be fair, it hurts constantly anyways from an old shoulder injury, but that's not so bad, this, however, is extraordinarily uncomfortable). So, no parkour for me tonight, and probably not tomorrow, either.

Hey! For all of your readers out there: I've stepped away from my normal sci-fi book list and am reading Piers Anthonys Incarnations of Immortality series, which is fantasy (which makes me feel dirty inside). It's truly fantastic, give it a shot!

Also, a harness for my bearded dragon is coming in within the next few days! I'll be able to bike around the city with her chilling on my shoulder as soon as it's sunny enough! I can't wait!

And that's about it for now: ow, book, beardie.

    • Canwest

      Kaatman

      So: my first RvbCanwest.

Started awkwardly for me, as I didn't know anyone, but that really didn't last long.

I had an awesome time! I took tonnes of pretty good photos, and playland was a blast!

And I have to say that my absolute favorite part of the entire event was watching Nico do his musical presentation. That was one seriously cool piece of music! I met awesome people, ate and drank awesome things (Vancouverites: get the three amigos omlette at the... Two Parrots? And ask for extra jalapenos), rode awesome rides (and saw some awesome terror faces), and came away with some awesome swag.

Now to get a 360... I see Futureshop is selling a 4gig for 150... would that be a mistake?

And next time I'm going to try to bring enough money to actually manage to get drunk, for god sakes.

The trip back was also pretty cool. I took some more cool pictures, and met this chick who's hitch-hiked here from Ontario. Traveling is always easier if you have someone to do it with, you know?

Returning home was a little less good: my roommate has apparently started using our sink as a compost bucket, and he lost one of my geckos, so there's very possibly a little rotting corpse somewhere here in my room. But I also managed to make that neat sashimi dish I've been wanting to try for ages, so at least there's that.

And judging by the horrible smell that's filling my room, my beardie has just pooped. I'd better go clean that up before I die from it.

      I posted the pictures here:
      www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=551126641
Please add me and tag yourself!

I had a really awesome time, and I'll be back next year!

      G'day all!

Yup. And I doubt I've even tapped the surface of what it can do.

Now time to mess around with the video portion of my project. Windows Live Movie Maker is made for 15 year olds in remedial classes, and Movie Maker 2.6 won't play audio on my computer, so I've got a trial version of Sony Vegas that is almost as complicated as audacity. At least it does good work!

No problem. I actually knew about audacity, but my first experience with it sucked. After so many people recomended it, I spent about an hour messing around with it, and I love it.

I know what you mean maan, we usually send them left whilst we go right, we actually draw straws to see who will be "The Leader of the Noobs" for the day or for the round.

      Noobs make REALLY good distractions.

    • armoran

Aah right well, as far as things go over here we work our asses off for huge groups of noobs just making sure along the way nobody loses an eye. Most of us are techies. Though since the old days things have changed.

There once was a time when everyone knew everyone and we all knew how to fix guns (I specialized in anything BT or the Ions). But that was before we got days where we would have up to 400 people. Now it's like a machine, not a very well oiled one either. Most of us have already left, I only still work there because it's the only job I can work just 1 day a week and be sorted for food and travel and stuff.

    • armoran

Yes but... You don't, ACTUALLY work at a paintballing site... Do you?

    • armoran

It's not that it's complicated game wise but complicated organizing it, some people would have to work and cleaning up guns and others would not. So it isn't the best of things and just a little harder to plan out so it's complicated for that reason.

You can't look at the image; you've gotta look "through" it. Also, when you create a new group, it says to make sure that it doesn't already exist by searching. But not only did this person not search; they didn't scroll down to see that the group was right in the "bitchin' popular" section.

That would be from Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog. Joss and Nathan did it along with (obviously) the other actors in it as an independent, free, non-Hollywood, non-TV thing to prove that you can still make good shows without loads of money and a network.
