Once again I make my very rare post here since I don't have a dedicated blog space, and I don't Vlog much if at all and I want a place where I can post something with out the repercussions of Facebook. So this will be long, I am sorry....
So let me just bring all my old friends here up to speed on whats bee going on the last 4 or more years. So as you can see I've changed my name. YEARS ago I used Jib228 as my Xbox live tag, as to keep things simple I used that name everywhere. But a few years ago I started LARPing, and my primary persona is Kazick Fairwind. Long story short, I mostly go by Kaz IRL because I have other friends who share the same real first name. And I have been slowly going though all my old profiles and changing it. I finally got to here since I do still watch Rooster Teeth content and I do love the Podcast. So that's whats up with the name change.
Next up, let me tell you of the 3 times I almost got to go to RTX. (Part of this story is why I'm sharing it here and not on FB.) So 6ish years ago, it was the second or 3rd RTX, I was in a position where I could have gone. I was working 2 jobs that paid well, did the math and figured I could have around $3000 for the weekend by summer. But my partner at the time wasn't happy with me leaving for the week like that, and shortly after figuring out the money, I lost both jobs.
Flash forward 2 years. I am working a better job, have my own car, and again figured out the money situation. Only to have my partner dump me and kick me out so all my money went into finding my own place to live.
Flash forward another 2 years. My now roommate, had a job selling a card game at conventions. The whole idea was his boss, his wife's friend, would get a both at conventions and pay a few people to go to 2-3 conventions at a time to sell the game. We are talking pay for a vendor pass, flying them there, putting them in a hotel, and even Uber rides. Now my roommate who hates working quit his normal 9 to 5 job to do this once a month. It sucked because his wife had to work 2 jobs and a few times I had to pitch in extra for utilities. But whatever. Once day her friend, my roommates boos, called and asks if he and I could help move some furniture. No big deal I'd get a free lunch out of it. We go over to her house and move the stuff with me doing most of the heavy lifting. As we are sitting there his boss and him are going over all the conventions they are planing on going to in the summer. And RTX gets brought up. Que me, I shit you not, jumping in between them and saying that I'll drive and haul all their merch if she can get me ticket and put me in the hotel with my roommate. I didn't get a solid answer, but she was interested and said she'd let me know.
In comes the next event that my roommate went to. This was a longer con and I think it was in Australia. Being a small time card game company they needed big sales to cover this trip. And they didn't get many sales. In fact I think they lost $4000 on the trip. Needless to say they stopped sending people, or at least my roommate I don't know, to cons. So there goes my 3rd shot at getting a trip to RTX.
Flash forward to now. I have a Jeep. I have a motorcycle. My bike isn't the most comfortable to ride long trips. But doing a little back of the napkin math it would only cost me around $170 give or take $10 round trip on gas on the bike. Now I have no idea what other costs would be. Event tickets, room, etc. But Just doing a quick look riding would be, in the longer run, cheaper than flying. Flying means I'd have to pay for an Uber to the airport here in Vegas. Then an Uber from the Airport in Austin to the hotel. And then Uber anywhere in town. And then 2 more Ubers on the return trip. And that shit adds up fast. So even if I found a flight for less that $200, I'd still pay WAY more in over all travel costs.
I figure riding the bike would be around $170, and then another $20-$30 for food and snacks on the ride. It would take 20 hours according to Google maps and my math. But I figure it would take even longer since I would make food and comfort stops every few hours. And each fuel stop would take about 10 min. (Fuel up, drink water, eat a snack) Draw back though is my bike is small, its only a 250. Meanings id be topping out at around 70 MPH. Its got a smaller seat which can get uncomfortable after a few hours. The longest ride I have done has be 13 hours. So 20+ hours would be pushing it. And doing it twice is even more so. But I also see guys doing around the world trips on Groms which are even smaller than my bike.
But I keep thinking all this. Thinking how fun that ride would be. Just me, my bike with my gear strapped to the back, and the wide open roads for hours. And going to an event that I have wanted to go to for years. And I think how I could Vlog it all, posting updates. I don't know firendos, I just want to post this, get it out there since its been on my mind for over a year. I started a better paying job last year, and just got a raise. And I will be hitting my two year mark that week. So I'll have another raise and more vacation time. And I just wanted to get this out there. Maybe someone will have some input or ideas or whatever.
