      Kumiho

Call me crazy but so far this is the most fun game I've played all year.

      Dead_Space_Extraction.jpg

      So here's a Kumiho review!

Gameplay - 8 (It's not as good as the first Dead Space, but then no one expected it to be. That's not to say it's a bad game, it just falls a little short of the greatness of the first Dead Space, which is just incredible. It's a rail shooter, much like the House of the Dead or Time Crisis arcade shooters, but you have a little more control and you don't aim the Wii remote away from the TV to reload. Using some of the elements of the first Dead Space and a ton of very well polished visuals that push the Wii to its limits you get a game that looks great, has a high frame rate and is gives off a distinctly Dead Space feeling despite being a completely different style of game.)

Graphics - 8 (I won't pretend that it's as good as the PS3 or 360 could handle, but considering the team were rebuilding environments created for the PS3 and 360 I must say I'm impressed. There were recognizable areas in Extraction that featured in Dead Space, unhindered by the weaker processor of the Wii. The necromorphs still look great although the bosses looked a lot blockier than on the more powerful platforms. Yes, you get to see bosses in this game that featured in the first game.)

Music - 8 (The music played a much more crucial role here than in the first game because everything was so much more heavily scripted. In the first game the player could go anywhere and music had to sit on hold for you to enter a certain room or corridor while you spent ages opening lockers to get items, here though you enter the room or corridor as soon as the enemies from the last room or corridor are dead. The music was well scored and established the good old Dead Space atmosphere.)

Story - 9 (This is what grabs me the most. I loved the first Dead Space because it was new, slick, fun and atmospheric and it had a great storyline. This game acts as a prequel, running parallel to the Dead Space anime movie and ending shortly before the crew of the Kellion arrive at the Ishimura on their repair and rescue mission. Visceral games did a great job of showing you how certain barricades and bloodbaths that blocked your way in Dead Space happened during the events of Extraction. It's a good story with well developed characters and some meaty twists that everyone can enjoy, but true Dead Space fans will adore.)

Replay value - 8 (I had a blast playing this game, and it gives you a rating when you finish each story chapter. I didn't get 5/5 stars on each chapter - of which there are eight - so I need to go back and perfect the run. Also it has a co-op mode that I'm dying to try out, most of my friends enjoyed Dead Space so I can see them all wanting to have a go at this new game.)

      Overall - 8.5

It's authentic true to the roots Dead Space. I pity the people that love Dead Space and don't have a Wii because this is part of the Dead Space universe and a pretty important part. I'd love to say more about the storyline but I couldn't without spoiling some parts and I really don't want to do that because this is a great Wii title and a great part of the Dead Space franchise. Cannot wait until Dead Space 2.

The best bit: The bit of the game that moved me most is a major spoiler so I'll put that below, but for people that don't want spoilers and do want to hear about a great part of the game, its probably when you escape from Aegis VII on a shuttle and meet a familiar old friend from the first game.

The spoilery best bit: Cutting off your own arm using the nunchuck because you're trapped outside the Ishimura with limited oxygen, your friends are waiting to escape in a new shuttle and a giant angry necromorph is coming for you.

      Goal list:
      - Write a murdermystery party script
      - Publish novel
      - Finish second nove

      - Escape from Jupiter: Novel

      kumi-kunbanner.jpg

So yeah, go play it. Also I finished that novel I was reading, so now I know exactly what happened in that show I didn't get to watch back in 1994. Call me obsessive but it feels very freeing.

    • Overly Disappointing Side Title

      Kumiho

I make no apologies to the fanboys/girls that I am about to offend.

      Halo_3_ODST_Box_Art.png

      So here's a Kumiho review!

Gameplay - 7 (Remember Halo 3? Yeah just think of that. The health pack mechanic doesn't make as huge a difference as Bungie boasted before. Yes, now that we have silent weapons you can take a slightly stealthier approach, but as soon as you shoot one guy down the rest all know you're there and it becomes a case of running out and killing everything with well placed shots before your shield goes down and your health starts getting chipped away at. Two new weapons? What...eight missions or something? It could have easily passed as downloadable content.)

Graphics - 7 (It looked unpolished, unfinished, unfit for my console. Yes, it was acceptably current generation but without MC's visor it was less shiny, something Halo has a habit of marketing itself on. Looking at everything in the dark with the visor mode only served to make things look even more bland. Shapes became silhouettes. Black became brown. Or if it was daytime any primary colour brighter than grey became blinding. It wasn't really that nice to look at.)

Music - 8 (The music actually wasn't bad, but then it never has been. Well written, always suited the mood, served to make the Rookie sections feel isolated and alone, as we are meant to feel. Battle fanfare was bouncy as always but who can hear it over all the gunshots? Oh that's right...silenced guns...which aren't that great anyway and get swapped for the old ones as soon as possible.)

Story - 6 (It wasn't the worst idea in the world, but too short to be worth the money and not interesting enough to merit a second playthrough. I'm a firefly fan but hearing the character voices doesn't a game make. Honestly though what gets me most is the Rookie's game. I honestly think his ONLY purpose is to make the game a little bit longer. I think Bungie realised the game wasn't going to take long to complete so they decided, "Hey, let's throw a rookie in and make him search an open world to unlock missions. Let's space them apart too so that he has to travel for them. Also let's not give him a ghost to make these distances easier until about 70% through the game.")

Replay value - 5 (I already traded it in to bring down the price of Dead Space: Extraction.)

      Overall - 6.5

Don't buy it. Just rent it. The campaign is short enough to stand as downloadable content. Firefight (which, let's face it, is Bungie's attempt to compete with Gears2's Horde Mode and it does so poorly) is small enough to stand as downloadable content. The multiplayer map packs ARE downloadable content. The engine is already on the Halo 3 disc, you should be able to just put it in the machine and play each of the new ODST modes off the harddrive as DLC because there's so little of it.

I'm not impressed, and I feel a great swell of pity for the Halo fanboys and fangirls that have wasted their money on stuff that they should have gotten for less, and in the map pack cases they probably just bought them all a second time by getting this game.

The best bit: Gee I dunno...probably getting Dead Space: Extraction half price with it at my local store.

I'm already far happier with Extraction than I was with ODST. I was planning on trading Extraction in against Assassin's Creed 2, but now I actually think I want to keep a hold of it.

      Look at that glorious boxart.

I could just barrel roll all over it.

Yeah some things just don't and probably won't change. I've said it before and because it just sums up what my gaming pleasure spot cries out for I'll probably say it again:

The only way I could love a game more than this would be if Nintendo rereleased it in Hi Def with online dogfighting.

I love stuff that's set in space. I love spaceships. I love shooting stuff down and flying around asteroids. I just love every inch of this game. That's all there is to it.

Also this video proves that it has an anti-war message that rings out even today.

There's a chance everyone loves this game. It's still amusing to me that back in 199.......back in the 90s some video game magazine said that Super Smash Brothers was a stupid idea that would never lift off. It's like when Bill Gates said 637 kb was enough memory for any PC user. How things change!

Yeah I love this game hard. It took everything that was right about Melee and brought it back. Except Mewtwo. Still can't understand why they switched him for Lucario. Still, its got all the key players from big Nintendo brand games (plus Sonic and Solid Snake) and pits them against each other in a beat'em up. A beat'em up where hit points make you vulnerable to the point of being beaten across the screen into oblivion rather than just dropping dead.

This game just has the best multiplayer ever. Get four people on a couch and give them controllers and just have a blast, that's what gaming is about.

If only they would port Super Smash Brothers 64 onto the Nintendo DS....

Didn't have room in the title to add that this is a PS2 game. Exclusive that is.

Many know the first one as that game that came free with the MGS2 demo back in 2000, but for those of you that played the first game you know that it was actually kinda awesome and the second one topped it in every measurable way.

High speed robot action. That's what this game is. It's the only mech game that really delivers in my opinion. I make no apologies to the mech warrior fans out there. This game was very fast paced and very flashy without trading gameplay for zazz. I am still begging that Konami will make a third game.

The is the only PS3 exclusive on my list. Not that other PS3 games are bad. This one sure as heck rocks.

A big part of my love for this game is my history with it. I played MGS1, loved it. Played MGS2, loved it, even Raiden wasn't too bad. Played MGS3, loved it. I was a bit saddened by the thought of never playing MGS4 because I didn't own a PS3, but a friend was kind enough to lend me his so I could finish it. And I loved it, it was an epic end to an epic storyline full of serious twists, and it would have been in my list last year if I had owned a PS3. The problem was the thought that I might never complete it a second time.

Now I've completed it 4 or 5 times. And I'll complete it again because I love the game. The history between the characters, the backstory that loyal fans like me all know, and simply being a better developed game than the others in the series makes it the best. It's like the first 3 games were made so that we could get the full enjoyment out of this game, and I do.

Awesome game. You remember my anticipation of it and subsequent glee when it fully delivered upon and exceeded all my expectations. It's gems like this that got me through my darkest time - working for the Civil Service - if you have me added on Xbox LIVE you'll know I've done everything that there is to be done in this game, 1000 gamer points.

It's like Resident Evil 4 in space only a million times better. I honestly think this is the best survival horror ever made. It creates a tense atmosphere and has its jumpy shock moments, even when I know they're coming sometimes they still bring a smile to my face. And it's fun. So much fun. The action in this game didn't end, there are rooms that I look forward to entering because I know I'll have a fantastic battle inside it.

And the main character isn't even a space marine! He's an engineer, it's got that common man thrust into a nightmare element that seems to be lost in so many games these days. Fair enough, he gets an arsenal of weapons and a suit of futuristic armour, but he's still a regular guy trained to do regular things, not fight alien-zombies.

How much do I love this game? Put it this way: I have completed it 100% on Xbox 360, still throw it in for playthroughs, and am currently considering going out and buying the PS3 version so I can 100% it too. I would happily own two copies of this game.

This is proof that games are still good. Not the game itself, the fact that it keeps slipping down position in my top ten favourites list. It used to be in fourth place or something, now it's all the way down to seventh. This is partially because I can complete it so quickly and so easily that I'm losing interest a little, and partially because good games keep coming out and slipping into the list.

So, I'll go through the ritual jargon. I bought the Dreamcast pretty much for this game, now I play the Gamecube director's cut of the Dreamcast original on my Wii emulator. Bizarre, I know. Aside from my daunting realisation that I could complete the game by holding the analogue stick forward and simply hitting the jump button in a timely fashion, this is some of the best fun I think anyone can have with a game.

It still looks great, the story is good old fashioned Sonic vs Dr Robotnik (not Eggman if you say Eggman I'll beat your face with a monopoly set) and no sign of werehogs or beastiality or anything.

Honestly Wii owners/gamecube owners if you see the Gamecube directors cut of Sonic Adventure you should nab it.

hehe, just kidding. To each their own. But seriously... watch out... she might drag you to all the twat-light movies errr twilight movies and make you pay for it too.

Just a heads up. But its good your doing some "cultural exchange" hehe. It's important in relationships.

A lot of people close to me enjoy that series, which I know choose to leave unnamed, because we all know what it is called.

I read 3/4 of the first one in a day, at work. Thank god I got paid for the time I spent reading it or else I would've had to commit suicide. My friend begged me to read it so that I could be "swayed" to love it. So I TRIED TO READ THE FIRST ONE so that my arguments wouldn't be totally unfounded.

I'd change my opinion if I was proven wrong... BUT I KEEP GETTING PROVEN RIGHT.

I finally watched Psycho for the first time last year and not only did the shower scene creep me out even though I've seen that part before, but I never knew the ending. I even watched a lot of the new Psycho with Vince Vaughn (ugh) but never saw the end. I'm glad I got to see it with the original.

My mom has a box set of all his great movies and I still plan on watching more than the 3 or 4 I've actually seen.

That was the only bad thing about the game. The action was amazing and the story was really cool. I didn't play the first one, but I really didn't feel like I missed much story, it felt like the game stood on it's own.

I'm glad you said something, I completely forgot about this game!

I must give the man the credit he deserves. The Birds is what sparked my fear of our avian friends. I've been a fan of his work since I was five and I first saw The Birds. That man scared me more with mere words and music than any horror movie I've seen since. He didn't need blood and gore. He was the master of suspense.

That game looks incredible! I wish I'd had a chance to play it.

That's a big part of it!
You know, you're the first person to ever associate my fear of birds to Hitchcock.
This is one of many reasons why you're awesome. smiley1.gif

The only things I liked about MGS2 were the boss fights which are great by default when it comes to MGS games and the last couple of levels where the game got really trippy.

I could, but I don't think I can get 6 pages of information about it. I think I'm going to revive my paper on Music in Video Games.

      Can't argue with that logic!

Since my 360 is out of commission I'm going to try to get some games I've been wanting to play on the Wii like Okami, MadWorld, Punch-out, and Boom Blox.
