How the eff do you solve matricies on a graphing calculator. Like... Here's what I'm tryin' to do.

There's like a "system" or somethin' of a couple equations like:

      x+8y=11
      7x+y=16

For some reason I can't get credit for solving this on my final unless I do it with a graphing calculator, but I dunno how to enter it and like...what to do and shit. Anyone? :) Also my final's tomorrow.

Just curious. For me, I knew I would smoke from a very early age. I'm not entirely sure why; I didn't hang around that type of crowd or anything, it just always appealed to me in some way. I believe I told my mom sometime in late elementary school or early middle school that I was going to try weed at least once to see how I felt about it, and she accepted that, probably assuming I would find it not to be worth it like she did.

When I started smoking, I was actually already being home schooled full-time, so I definitely was not peer pressured into it. My friend offered to smoke with me and I agreed, so he brought some ganja down and we smoked. I didn't feel much the first three or four times I smoked, but then I had a night in the woods where I got high for the first time and it was amazing. Ever since then I've known that I would always love weed, even though I've now given it up in favor of something I love even more. Still, I wouldn't be who I am today if I hadn't smoked, and I'm extremely glad I did.

Another interesting thing is that I used to lie on the floor and stare up at the patterns in the ceiling while listening to Bob Marley for hours on end when I was a little kid. I think this further supports the fact that I was somehow born a stoner, or maybe that I just see the inherent value of seeing the world through purer, less distinguishing or judgmental eyes.

How/why/when/where/with whom--all those important questions--did you start smoking?

Personally, I didn't smoke weed to relax, which is the most common reason I've heard. I was relaxed in my general sober life. For me, smoking was a way to enhance my mental state. I felt like I could see the subtle and simple underlying connections between everything in reality. To me, that is why everything was hilarious: Because it all made so much sense, but there is no way to express it to others. I fully believe that this is true and that it must be experienced. I also realized very early in my stoner career that it was very similar to being a little kid again, which would make sense because I assume it was much easier to perceive the aforementioned connections when your sense data was newer and still learning to distinguish things from one another.

      Anyway, why do you smoke?

"the spiritual path to truth requires universal compassion to all living, feeling beings." Sorry, but this isn't going to convince me that Vegans are right. Do you also not swat a mosquito when it bites you? It's only trying to feed its children.

"If they could form a religion, animals would undoubtedly depict the devil in human form." I think most animals on the Serengeti would depict lions. Ocean dwellers probably fear sharks more than humans. Insects are constantly eaten by birds and spiders and the like. Yeah, chickens and cows might hate us more than any other species, but we're all the same as any other species-food relationship. You act like we are the only carnivorous species on the planet. We evolved our way to the top of the food chain, one way or another, and we are the dominant species on the planet. Why should we suddenly have to stop doing what so many other animals do?

"Regardless, if that self-serving stance is how you justify making a terrible and destructive lifestyle choice, I can't respect that." Terrible and destructive? I'm eating a hamburger, not burning an orphanage. Think you might be taking it a LITTLE bit far? I mean if you want to go Vegan in the name of better health, then cool. Do that. I'll be glad for you. But do you really need to belittle everyone else for their choice? Fine, maybe being a Vegan would be healthier. Know what else would be healthier? If I didn't eat potato chips or drink Coke. But I do, because I like those things. I guess that makes me selfish and terrible and I am on par with Adolf Hitler in terms of morals.

Thank you for your input, but I'm pretty certain I never explicitly elicited your advice or opinion.

I'm just honest and I needed a way to vent.

Well you could take a look at this article for some examples.

That is about as extreme a view I could find, but it has some merit. Basically, with the social and economic crises we are facing, there is real likelihood of riots, looting, or outright civil war. I don't think it will be as dire as that guy in the article thinks, but he does have a point about how bad things are and could get.

I was actually saying the same thing to a friend of mine only a short while ago, about enjoying having someone to argue and debate with.

On the topic, though, I have to disagree. Yes, we could feed everyone on the planet right now. But for how long? To give everyone the amount of food to live would be an intense drain on the planet's resources. Yes, many people waste food, but even accounting for the amount of waste, it still takes vast resources to feed the entire US. The population in the US is increasing ever more slowly, with good birth control and education, but the rest of the world needs an example.

Feeding and curing the whole world I think is counter-productive to our own lives. This is like I said before, I think we need to fix all the problems in the US before we start going out and trying to fix the world's problems. It would be much easier to help everyone else if we had a country that wasn't circling the drain. We could be that example.

I think you and I aren't so different. We just see very different paths to the same conclusion of helping the world become a better place.

It's not logical, it's moral. Logic has no room for moralities. There is no logic in spending hundreds of millions of dollars to help a sick kid in Africa who will grow up to contribute precisely nothing to humanity.

I can understand wanting to help people. But I don't think on an individual scale; I look at it from a global perspective. There are already 6.7 billion people on the planet, and that number shows no signs of slowing down. By this time next year, that will be at almost 6.9 billion. In ten years, over 7 billion.

We aren't in any danger of running out of people, so why should we bother to save them? From the perspective of a company, it's for money. From the perspective of you or me, we could say, it's because they are human, and have as much of a right to life as anyone else.

But that's just human morality imposed on human lives, with no respect to what makes sense in the long run, no though to how many people this planet can possibly sustain. What about the germs and viruses you kill for our survival? They come from this planet, and use us for food. We kill them, they kill us, it's survival. I don't see how we can say it's okay to destroy them, but it's somehow wrong to kill, say, bears. Or lions. Or some other species that looks cute but serves no purpose for us, and would kill us without a second thought to protect itself or if we looked like a good meal.

I wish I could make the problems of the world go away, and conjure up enough food and medicine for everyone to live nice, happy lives forever. But I can't, and no one can. There are limited resources, limited funds, and it makes little sense to spend them on others when we have problems of our own. Sure, our problems might not be near as severe as theirs, but no one is making them have kids and bring more people into their world to suffer. I will not take responsibility for fixing someone else's problems that don't affect me. That is how I feel, and I doubt very much you agree, but there it is.

What? That's bull crap. This country needs to stop butting into other countries' affairs and fix its own problems first. I don't have a problem with helping others. My problem is in trying to help those who don't appreciate it while we have problems of our own.

Well, going to isolationism and leaving well enough alone would stop us from fucking with anyone. The very act itself might fuck them up, but then again, if they hate us so much, why depend on us in any way?

This is probably one of the oldest arguments on humanity ever. Is humanity inherently good or inherently evil?

You clearly believe humans have a natural capacity for good. I believe it is the other way around. You should read Lord of the Flies, if you haven't already. It pretty clearly illustrates how I think people would be like if all the rules were removed.
