    • Red Ring of Death Protection?

      Introducing The Whisper Max

Talismoon have released a newer version of their Whisper fan called the Whisper Max, and if you believe what they say it should offer some serious red ring of death protection! Here's the press release and some pics:

The new Whisper Max is a deluxe version of the highly regarded Talismoon Whisper fan but with new uniquely engineered features that will provide Xbox 360 cooling far better than any other competing product on the market. Whisper Max achieves its unparalleled cooling achievements due to the following key factors:

      # Nitro Mode â€" In the flick of a switch, the Whisper Max fan can run with up to 240% more power. Without a doubt, all users will experience very significant cooling using the Nitro mode. This mode is ideal for long gaming sessions. Moreover, those who wish to have a quieter experience for watching a movie or conducting other less intensive tasks can just switch back to the original mode. This will provide more than adequate cooling and greater noise reduction.
      # Quality â€" The Whisper Max is a ball bearing fan providing a quieter and longer life. This construction provides advantages over sleeve bearing based fans which can potentially wear out sooner and become noisier as they age.
      # Lighting â€" Not only will the Xbox 360 become physically much cooler with the Whisper Max, but will actually aesthetically look very cool too. When the Whisper Max installed, the user can select between blue, green or red lights or opt not to select any at all. Moreover, if all the mentioned colours are a bit too common, users could in future use just about any other LED including white, UV, orange or anything which captures their imagination.

Essentially, the Whisper Max is a direct replacement fan for the Xbox 360 which offers far superior (refer to internal CPU, GPU test graph) and reliable cooling with a touch of aesthetic class. The whole package includes everything you need (even includes 2 small heatsinks to help lower the overall temperature) and is fully compatible with the original Xbox 360 and Xbox 360 Elite.

    • More and More good news

The keynote speech at CES by Bill Gates, and also Robbie Bach, has come and gone and aside from the BT partnership announcement there was really nothing too interesting to be said about the Xbox 360.

Hit ABC and Disney Channel Programs Join Xbox Live Video Lineup; MGM Brings Legendary Library of Films to Xbox Live

Bach announced that hit TV programs from ABC Television and Disney Channel will join the Xbox Live programming available for download directly to the Xbox 360 console. In addition, MGM will bring its library of hit movies.

Under the agreement with Disney-ABC Television Group, later this month, all U.S. Xbox Live members will begin to have access to select TV shows and movies from the ABC Television Network, ABC Family, ABC News, Disney Channel and Toon Disney as part of an agreement with Disney-ABC Television Group. More than 500 hours of content, in both standard definition and high definition when available, will be offered including hit ABC Television shows "Lost," "Grey's Anatomy," "Ugly Betty" and "Desperate Housewives." Past and current ABC shows will be available on demand, with new episodes arriving on the service the day after they air on television.

Under the agreement with MGM, Xbox 360 will offer MGM's legendary movie library on demand for Xbox 360 including such titles as "Rocky," "Terminator," "Legally Blonde," "Silence of the Lambs" and "Barbershop." United Artists, an MGM sister company, will also make select films available on demand.

With more than 10 million Xbox Live members and more than 3,500 hours of premium content, Xbox 360 has established itself as a premier platform for on-demand TV shows and movies, including impressive high definition experiences, for TV.

"Xbox Live Marketplace is the destination for high-definition movies, TV shows and music videos," Bach said. "And, with the new Disney-ABC and MGM partnerships, we are bringing even more compelling high-definition content to people through their Xbox 360."

Xbox 360 on Track to Register Biggest Year in Video Game History

According to Bach, the continuing success of Xbox is another indication of the power of digital technology to transform the way people access and experience entertainment of all kinds. Sales of 17.7 million consoles this holiday season surpassed original expectations and put Xbox 360 on track to register the biggest year in video game history as U.S. consumers spent more on the Xbox 360 platform in 2007 than on any other gaming platform.

"With its continued momentum in games, accessories and digital entertainment via our leading online service Xbox Live, and record-setting games and accessory attach rates, evidence is everywhere that Xbox 360 is thriving," Bach said.

      Microsoft and BT Joining Forces

Microsoft and BT have announced they are bringing together the next-generation TV service BT Vision with the Xbox 360. All BT broadband customers will have the unique opportunity to receive the best in high-definition gaming, television and movies through an Xbox 360 console, in a powerful, all-in-one entertainment experience. BT Vision, which is powered by the Microsoft Mediaroom Internet Protocol TV (IPTV) platform, plans to make this first-of-its-kind device and service offering available to customers in the middle of 2008. The announcement was made during the keynote address by Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates and Microsoft President Robbie Bach of the Entertainment & Devices Division at 2008 International CES.

The groundbreaking partnership will enable any BT Broadband customer to use an Xbox 360 console to access the BT Vision service and its extensive library of on-demand content, giving instant access to hundreds of movies and thousands of hours of sporting events, television programming, music videos and other digital content, such as BT Vision Sport's 242 "near-live" FA Premier League football matches.

BT Vision customers with an Xbox 360 console will gain the option of accessing BT Vision from either the Xbox 360 console or a set-top-box. The service will be available to existing and future Xbox 360 console owners.

BT Vision on Xbox will combine the richness of the Microsoft Mediaroom- enabled TV service with the benefits of next-generation gaming, as well as unique new capabilities that the integrated solution brings. Xbox LIVE, the largest online social network in the living room, will be seamlessly integrated into the experience, providing consumers with a wide range of community-based features, such as voice chat, sending and receiving text and voice messages, and accessing Xbox LIVE Marketplace, all while watching TV. For example, while a TV viewer is enjoying his favorite football game, he can receive a message from a friend inviting him to join a voice chat, or they could play a game of their own with EA SPORTS(TM) "FIFA Soccer."

"We are pleased to partner with Microsoft to deliver a truly compelling connected entertainment experience to our customers," said Dan Marks, CEO of BT Vision. "For the first time consumers in the U.K. will be able to experience the advantages of an advanced TV service together with the benefits of next-generation gaming. Our aim is to provide BT Vision on multiple platforms -- giving customers greater convenience, control and flexibility over what they watch, when they watch and how they watch TV. It also means that we are able to potentially expand our BT Vision customer base by tapping into the popularity of Xbox 360."

"This is an exciting moment in home entertainment," said Enrique Rodriguez, corporate vice president of the Connected Television Division at Microsoft. "Last year at CES, we announced Xbox 360 on Microsoft Mediaroom as a powerful platform capable of enabling new entertainment experiences for consumers, and we are pleased to team with BT to bring this service to market. Together we are enabling BT Vision customers to be the first in the world to enjoy this next-generation TV and gaming entertainment experience."

    • Xbox Live Issues Persist

You might remember some issues with Xbox Live just before Christmas that were fixed soon after, well it appears they are back and Microsoft have responded. They updated their support page, which can be found here, with the following message:

Users may experience intermittent issues with tournaments, posting statistics, matchmaking, and sending messages. We are aware of the issue and are actively working towards a resolution. We apologize for any inconvenience.

Maybe Microsoft sold a few too many Xbox 360's at Christmas to handle the new influx of Xbox Live users :).

    • Under 18 and Can't Download from Live?

Want to know why, if you are under 18 years of age, you are unable to download some content off of the Xbox Live Marketplace? Well as you would have thought, it's to do with the ESRB, as Major Nelson explains.

The answer lies with video game ratings organizations, like the Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB). Game demos and trailers distributed over Xbox Live are considered advertising and in accordance with the ESRB’s Principles and Guidelines for Responsible Advertising Practices Xbox Live members under 18 do not have access to demos or trailers for a title rated M (Mature) or RP (Rating Pending.) ESRB Guidelines are industry wide and are not unique to Xbox Live.

The Halo 3 multiplayer experience is about to get even better. After launching to incredible acclaim and fanaticism, Halo 3 players will be able to enjoy three all new multiplayer maps on December 11 as part of the Heroic Map Pack, the first in a series of downloadable content from Bungie Studios to come via Xbox Live.

Available for 800 Microsoft Points exclusively on Xbox Live Marketplace, each map presents a totally different play style.

Standoff’s symmetrical valley, with its entrenched bases and fields of boulders is ideal for mid-sized objective and Slayer game types

      Rat’s Nest

while Rat’s Nest’s vast, labyrinthine passages bring something new to the Halo multiplayer experience: an indoor vehicle paradise, strongly influenced by the Campaign mode, ideal for big team battles.

Finally, Foundry is the ultimate Forge map â€" players can edit every single object in this voluminous industrial warehouse, place stairways, walls, bridges and tunnels to create an entirely new play space and build almost any kind of map they can think of.

In addition, ongoing updates to Halo 3’s matchmaking playlists ensure that ranked and social gameplay remains dynamic and competitive.

    • 5 Years of Xbox Live, Free Arcade Title

On November 15, Microsoft will celebrate the fifth anniversary of Xbox Live. In addition, they note that the latest membership figures show more than 8 million members are now actively engaged in the largest social entertainment network on TV. Xbox Live has grown from a small community of gamers in two countries, playing a handful of games online with their friends, to a worldwide social entertainment network offering online access to gaming, music, movies and TV shows. As friends across 26 countries and nine languages have connected on Xbox Live, it is their feedback and active participation that has guided the service to become what Wired magazine recently called "the king of the online arena." As a gesture of thanks to the gaming community, all 8 million members will have the opportunity to download a free Xbox Live Arcade game,* available for downloading between 12:01 a.m. PST on Nov. 15 and 11:59 p.m. PST on Nov. 16.** In addition to this, every active member who joined the service in 2002 will receive 500 free Microsoft Points.

Starting on Dec. 4, all Xbox Live members will receive a free system update with a host of new features and enhancements. Included in this update will be the launch of Xbox Originals, which, for the first time, will enable consumers to download and own full Xbox games, such as "Halo," "Psychonauts," "Crimson Skies: High Road to Revenge" and "Fable," among others, directly to their Xbox 360. This new service will launch with an array of blockbuster titles spanning the most popular genres from action-adventure to classic role-playing games.

With no disc necessary, and at just 1,200 Microsoft Points per game, Xbox Live members can easily rediscover these hit titles, or check out a game they missed the first time around. This launch lineup is only the beginning, as Xbox 360 owners can expect to see a growing catalog of Xbox games to download and own over the coming year.

"In just five short years, Xbox Live has revolutionized the way friends and family have fun in the living room," said John Schappert, corporate vice president of Live, software and services at Microsoft. "On its fifth birthday, Xbox Live truly is the place for hanging out with friends and enjoying downloadable TV shows, movies, videos, game add-ons and now downloadable Xbox games on demand."

      * Free Xbox LIVE Arcade download includes "Hexic 2" in Korea, and "Carcassonne" in the rest of the world where Xbox Live is available.
** Free download available for 48 hours starting at 12:01 a.m. PST on Nov. 15.

    • Could DivX be Coming to the Xbox 360?

DivX support on the Xbox 360 is something that a lot of people want to see, and thanks to a little blurt from the new CEO of video codec company, we have a little bit more fuel to add to the fire. A JP Morgan analyst, Paul Coster, asked Kevin Hell, DivX's new CEO, whether the Xbox 360 would get DivX certification given that Microsoft Media Extender just got it. Here's how the conversation went down:

Paul Coster: Just a minor point here, but there was a recent Microsoft (MSFT) conference where I believe their media extender now incorporates the DivX codec on it, is that correct? Can you confirm that and does that mean we’re soon going to see Xboxes with DivX on them?

Kevin Hell: Yes! that, uh, we’re in discussions with Microsoft on that at this point in time, so I can’t go into any great detail on that. Um that is not a certified, that is not a certified or licensed product at this time.

What do you think? Is Hell hiding something or what?
