    • Bungie Leaving Microsoft Rumors

      ManicMinds

I get my INFO from planetxbox360.com

The internet is alight with rumors of Bungie leaving Microsoft and those same rumors don't appear to be without merit either. In fact, most sites have been saying to expect a press release about the situation some time this week. No one actually knows exactly what it will say (if indeed it one comes out), however according to the rumor starters, 8BitJoystick.com, they received an email from a confidential source as follows:

Microsoft was supposed to release the press release today but if they wait till the 10/6 the impact wont effect the quarterly results. However today is the actual official date and the day the NDAs expire, however you still didn't hear this from me.

Apparently MS just wants Bungie to make Halo for the rest of their natural days, and Bungie doesn't like how MS is constantly trying to "handle" everything they do; the way they market their games, the way they interact with their fans (basically the fact that they do appreciate their fans), and how stingie they are with the profits (comparable to the rest of the industry). So as of today they are their own independent entity. They'll probably make Halo 4 for Microsoft, however hey are also free to create new intellectual properties for whatever system they want. (Even though they prefer the xbox platform).

TeamXbox have now also come to the party and said the following:

We're going to tell you that it is more complex than simply Bungie leaving Microsoft or Microsoft letting Bungie go.

Apparently they can't say any more because it would put their sources in trouble. So it does seem that something is definitely in the the works. TXB also note to expect an announcement before October 12... so if we put two and two together, that would possibly mean sometime between the 6th and 12th of this month. In any event the rumor seems set to only gather steam as mainstream media such as the Sydney Morning Herald have now picked it up!

    • Halo 3 Registers Biggest Day in US

      ManicMinds

Microsoft have announced that Halo 3 has officially become the biggest entertainment launch in history, garnering an estimated $170 million in sales in the United States alone in the first 24 hours. The Xbox 360 title beat previous records set by blockbuster theatrical releases like Spider-man 3 and novels such as Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.

Halo 3 is the conclusion to the epic trilogy and picks up where Halo 2 left off, answering questions around the fates of the beloved protagonist Master Chief and his artificial intelligence sidekick Cortana as they struggle to save humankind from destruction at the hands of the alien coalition known as the Covenant. In addition to the rich storyline, Halo 3 continues the franchise’s grand tradition of delivering innovative online multiplayer experiences via Xbox Live, the world’s largest social network on TV.

“Halo 3 has become a pop-culture phenomenon,†said Shane Kim, corporate vice president of Microsoft Game Studios. “Not only is Halo 3 setting sales records, it’s also redefining entertainment. Within the first 20 hours alone, we’ve seen more than a million Xbox Live members come online to play Halo 3 â€" that makes September 25 the most active Xbox Live gaming day in history.â€Â

Retailers have also expressed their excitement about the launch of Halo 3.

Bob McKenzie, Senior Vice President of Merchandising for GameStop Corp commented that, “With consumer demand for Halo 3 and related products, we expect it to be the biggest video game title generator in GameStop's history."

“The initial demand we’ve seen for Halo 3 has been astounding, and the game is on track to become the number one gaming title of all time. Halo 3 is a genuine entertainment phenomenon and our customers have responded very enthusiastically to the release,†said Jill Hamburger, vice president of movies and games at Best Buy.

Developed by Bungie Studios, the Halo franchise is exclusive to the Xbox 360 video game and entertainment system and optimized for the Xbox Live online entertainment network. The more than 7 million Xbox Live users will get a continually evolving gaming experience with Halo 3.â€ÂIts online multiplayer and cooperative gameplay for Xbox Live Gold users, the much-talked-about Saved Films feature that enables players to capture and save their favorite moments on their hard drives, and Forge, an innovative map editor that enables infinite customization options are just some of the new features to experience.

More than 10,000 retailers hosted Midnight Madness events to celebrate the launch of this third installment in the billion-dollar franchise. In New York, Seattle, Miami and Los Angeles, Microsoft and retail partners hosted marquee launch events that featured contests and appearances by local celebrities and professional athletes who are fanatical about the Halo franchise, including Ludacris and Zac Efron and Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates.

More than 1.7 million copies of Halo 3 were preordered in the United States before a single store opened its doors at midnight, Sept. 25, making this the fasting pre-selling game in history, surpassing the previous record-setting pre-sales of Halo 2. Well beyond just a U.S. phenomenon, the launch of Halo 3 was a worldwide celebration that released in 37 countries and available in 17 languages.

    • Master Chief Unveiled at Madame Tussauds

      ManicMinds

Madame Tussauds Las Vegas honored Xbox 360's Halo by immortalizing Master Chief as the first video game character to be enshrined in the world famous attraction's 250-year history. The impressively life-sized figure of Halo's Master Chief was revealed to the world by song-writer and bass player Pete Wentz of 2007 Teen Choice Award Winner and Grammy nominated band Fall Out Boy at an official unveiling ceremony Saturday afternoon.

"For me, the launch of Halo 3 will be the entertainment event of the year. It will be as big as or bigger than any of the summer's movie blockbusters," said Wentz. "Master Chief is as much of a hero today as characters like Spiderman, Frodo and Luke Skywalker were for previous generations."

The figure was created at the Madame Tussauds Studios in London specifically for the Las Vegas attraction. Master Chief stands at an impressive 7'2" tall, with an approximate finished weight of 275 lbs. A total of 10 studio artists worked on the massive figure, dedicating an estimated 892 man-hours for the finalization of the stoic soldier. Total man-hours included 687 hours for sculpting, 168 hours for molding, and 37 hours for painting. Materials included over 1,000 pounds of clay.

"Master Chief is the first computer gaming personality immortalized by Madame Tussauds in our 250 year history -- recognizing the 'celebrity' of the Halo series that we had to capture", commented Adrian Jones, General Manager for Madame Tussauds Las Vegas.

Visitors to Madame Tussauds Las Vegas will have the opportunity to see the massive figure up close and personal before the most anticipated game release of 2007 -- Halo 3, scheduled for September 25, 2007. Master Chief will be stationed at the attraction's front entrance area -- providing guests with a "disarming" greeting at the door. With its towering presence, this newest attraction at Madame Tussauds Las Vegas is sure to bring out the most devoted fan base -- Halo Nation, for a personal look and photo with their iconic hero. As is Madame Tussauds standard operating procedure, guests will be able to interact with the figure for photos and a close-up look at the artistic details that bring this digital game world hero to life.

In addition to getting their picture taken with the legendary Master Chief at Madame Tussauds, Halo 3 fans will have the opportunity to purchase an array of Halo licensed products, at the Madame Tussauds Las Vegas location in addition to other gaming, specialty, and traditional retailers courtesy of Microsoft's exclusive Halo 3 licensing agent 20th Century Fox Licensing & Merchandising.

In Halo 3, the third installment of the landmark Halo trilogy and hugely anticipated sequel to the critically acclaimed Halo 2, people everywhere can take on the role of Master Chief and experience Master Chief's greatest battle as he launches an epic mission to stop the Covenant, destroy the impending Flood threat and ultimately save mankind. In this third chapter of the Halo trilogy, Master Chief returns to face his greatest challenge as he readies himself for a final battle that's destined to seal his place in history. Halo 3 will be available worldwide starting Sept. 25th and in Japan on Sept. 27th, only on Xbox 360.

Alex Garland's Halo Movie Script Leaks?
128 pages of the Halo movie never to be.

In Hollywood, it's not uncommon for movie script to leak before or during production. Movie website Latino Review famously published their thoughts on an alleged copy of 28 Days Later screenwriter Alex Garland's take on adapting Halo to the silver screen. That script has since then been abandoned in favor of rewrites from author DB Weiss, while problems at the studio level have prevented the entire project from even moving forward. Still, it'd be nice to see what Garland had in mind, right?

Apparently, you can. An intrepid 1UP user who had "done nothing but drink Game Fuel and go through anything I can to stop boredom" over the weekend stumbled across a torrent claiming to have a copy of Garland's ditched Halo script form 2005. The user attached 128-page PDF document in an e-mail to 1UP. The PDF seems legit, with Garland attributed on the first page, and what follows is either 127 pages of some pretty intense Halo fan fiction -- or a leaked Hollywood script for an epic sci-fi movie never to be.

We've pasted some screen captured exerts from the PDF document below, which give us a glimpse at an introductory dream sequence, what's behind Master Chief's armor, the appearance of the Flood and SPOILER WARNING the intended ending and subsequent sequel tease for the film.

    • The forerunner secret logs

      ManicMinds

Ok on Halo3.com it has some of the forerunner secret logs here is what they say.

We may have been fools to think that all intelligence follows the rules we've set
The Flood is no idiot parasite
It has a center, a Mind
      it spoke to us
      It has done this before

THIS IS MY FINAL ENTRY, AND I AM LEFT WITH ONE HOPE
THAT ONE DAY, SOMEONE, ANYONE IS AROUND TO WITNESS THIS WARNING
KNOW THAT A THOUSAND OTHER PLANS WERE TRIED AND FAILED
KNOW THAT ENERGETIC AND TENACIOUS AS LIFE IS
IT HAS AN ANTITHESIS JUST AS POWERFUL
IT IS THAT THING THAT WE MUST OBLITERATE

With every world that perishes, its army grows!
How do we fight a limitless thing that wishes only to embrace you?
The atrocity we plan, the last resort:
I pray that it doesn't come to that.

I speak to you of my intent
But intentions are eddies and whorls
And they change with the course of a stream
      This stream becomes a river
And a cataract of logic and doubt
Who has the right to live?
The light with the will to create me?
Or dark with the will to consume?
      Sometimes might is right
And sometimes the lamb must submit to the lion
      My convictions are tested
My intentions now are fey and strange
Should I pursue a pyrrhic choice?
      And rethink alliances?
      And choose a new philosophy?
      Right or might?
      Truly I do not know
      But you will, soon enough
For this is where the cataract floods
And drowns the boon of higher ground

The Conservation Measure is the only sweet note in this discordant symphony we've arranged.
We know that the Flood's biology is alien enough that it must be extragalactic in origin.
But where did it come from?

The anomalous world is in a perilous location beyond the line.
The inhabitants; these unique denizens, must be researched.
They may hold answers to our own mysteries.
The thing we built on that world will vouchsafe their lives,
If the plan succeeds, and they are saved, it will be a good world.
      If the plan fails,
it will remain an enigma forever

You asked me once, what happened to those who vanished?
You asked me, why did we survive where our fathers fell?
You wished to know how we ever let it happen
A scourge that consumed the galaxy
And the cure that was worse than the cancer
You asked me once about my intent
And the spot that would not wash out
I promise you the answers lie in the Ark
Find me there in the dark
For that is where I abide

    • New Halo 3 info

      ManicMinds

      Mag Scans
Covenant motorcycle and the return of the energy sword detailed.

This, certainly, isn't information Bungie wanted players discovered just yet. Thanks to countless gamers who've gone poking through the beta code and magazine scans from the upcoming issue of GamePro, there's plenty of new Halo 3 info to comb through. Here's "THE LIST" of uncovered details so far:

      * Energy Sword:
It's back, boys and girls! But, wait a minute, this isn't the sword you were whoring in Halo 2. No, this sword has received what it was missing until now -- a good balancing. Not only does it run on a battery like other Covenant weapons, but there's also a slight delay when switching between the sword and another weapon. Guess that's the end of being suckered into charging a guy using a single SMG only to be eviscerated.
      gp1.jpg

      * Magnum:
You're going to want to let the best shots on the team handle this pistol, as the lack of a scope and small clip -- 8 rounds -- make it more about precision than number of bullets fired.
      newarmouryellow.jpg

      * Radar Jammer:
This piece of equipment sends errant signals to radar of all players within the vicinity of the device. But, come on, who really plays with the radar on other than "newbs."
      gp6.jpg

      * Brute Chopper:
For when you want to show the Cortonas of the world you're a real man. With two Brute Shots attached to the sides, this monstrous ride has the ability to plow through other vehicles. Though, no word yet on what vehicles it can actually mow down. It would make sense that the Chopper can only take down enemy vehicles to a certain size -- such as Ghosts, Moongooses -- but would be unable to rip through a Warthog.
      gp5.jpg

      * Wraith:
Oh yeah, the Covenant tank is back, and this time it solidifies itself as the counterpart to the Warthog with a second seat for a gunner. While the driver still controls the energy blasts, there's a machine gun attached for the passenger to prevent any enemy hop-ons.

There's also three new maps detailed as well:

      * Shrine: A UNSC battle cruiser looms menacingly over Shrine's sprawling sand dunes. Shrine is the largest map ever to appear in a Halo game, so Bungie put a key emphasis on vehicle-on-vehicle combat. Shrine has few ties to older Halo 2 maps, but its massive size recalls Relic.
      * Epitaph: Epitaph is an arcane Forerunner cathedral-like structure that towers above the surrounding wasteland. The central killing floor is crisscrossed with elevated walkways, exterior hallways, and lifts. It's a spiritual successor to Halo 2 maps like Colossus, Gemini, and Midship.
      * Last Resort: Zanzibar, one of Halo 2's most beloved maps, has been rebuilt and rechristened Last Resort for Halo 3. This industrial site is almost twice as big, with a less cluttered internal layout and more paths into the flag room.

However, on top of this, the biggest change might be the fact there will be Spartan armor customizations in Halo 3. While everyone is used to the Mark V and Mark VI MJOLNIR Master Chief wears, that's not the only version of the Spartan armor in existence. While those who've read the novels know of the SPARTAN III armor, but the beta hex seems to indicate that there are Cobra, Intruder, Ninja, and Regulator versions of the Spartan armor as well. It'll be interesting to see if the changes remain in team gameplay modes, where games often force changes upon the player (such as striping a color of pink and assigning you red or blue -- for good reason).

With all this new info, the hype-o-meter's readings are off the charts!

    • Instant Messaging comes to Xbox Live

      ManicMinds

Beginning the week of May 7, 2007, the Xbox 360 Spring Update will provide Xbox 360 owners worldwide with access to Windows Live Messenger features. Members of the Xbox Live community currently send more than 2 million text and voice messages a day and can now use Windows Live Messenger to text chat with up to six people on their contact list at one time, while playing games, listening to music or watching movies.

“Bringing the largest IM community in the world, Windows Live Messenger, to Xbox 360 makes sense, as Xbox Live has really become the largest social network on television,†said Jerry Johnson, product unit manager of Xbox Live at Microsoft. “For our growing community of 6 million on Xbox Live, using Xbox 360 is a very social, connected experience. They are using Xbox 360 to play games, music and movies while simultaneously communicating with one another through video, voice and text chat. With this announcement we are simultaneously expanding the access of Xbox Live users to existing friends and family while introducing Windows Live Messenger users to the benefits of Xbox 360.â€Â

When the free update goes live, users of Windows Live Messenger on Xbox 360 will text chat using the virtual keyboard accessible on Xbox 360, or by connecting a USB keyboard to the console. This summer Microsoft will launch a QWERTY text-input device, a new accessory that will connect directly into the Xbox 360 controller to support text and instant messaging.

      cmi727.jpg

      cmi730.jpg

Beyond Instant Messaging, the Spring Update will deliver the following:

      * A richer Achievement notification pop-up (image to the right) will showcase the name of the unlocked Achievement and the gamerscore value without needing to leave the game to check the Achievements list.

      cmi728.jpg

      * Enhanced family settings features for Xbox Live communications enable different defaults for video chat and voice chat.

      * A new Xbox Live Marketplace blade lets Xbox Live members access the content they seek â€' whether it is game content or TV shows and movies (available in the United States) â€' from one place on Xbox Live.

      * Updates to Xbox Live Arcade allow owners to quickly see which Xbox Live Arcade games their friends are playing and join in the fun. Xbox Live members can also compare progress of leaderboard scores and Achievements directly with all friends on their friends list. Expanded Tell a Friend capabilities make it easier than ever to boast about Achievements and high scores.

      * A new option in Auto Downloads provides faster access to the entire collection of free, trial-version Xbox Live Arcade games.

      * New progressive download controls provide easy access to optimal viewing options by letting people fast-forward, rewind, pause and resume as their video is downloaded from Xbox Live Marketplace.

      * Extension of the background download functionality will allow owners to set their Xbox 360 console to turn off automatically after downloads are complete.

The Spring Update will be available starting May 7th.

    • NEWS: Xbox 360 Elite

      ManicMinds

100% Official: Xbox 360 Elite Moves from Fanboy Wet Dreams to Reality
      Xbox 360 CPU Getting Upgraded
CPU improvements should cool it down.

That warm machine you've been playing GRAW on is going to run a little cooler in the future. A release from Chartered Semiconductors details a deal between Microsoft and Chartered for a 65-nanometer manufacturing agreement for the Xbox 360 CPU.

Microsoft officially announced the Xbox 360 Elite, a black version of its gaming console that has an HDMI port, a 120GB hard drive, as well as a black wireless Xbox 360 controller and a black Xbox live headset. Most of this, faithful readers, you already knew about as we chased the rumor all the way from start to finish. But isn't it nice to hear it straight from Redmond? Of course, not all rumors are right, or complete.

The chip production for the CPU is slated to begin in first quarter 2007 and the tech-heavy release is a little tough to digest. Eventually, this change will help Microsoft lessen production costs for the unit, in addition to having the system run a little cooler. In other words, Xbox 360's of the future are going to be fitter, happier and more productive.

However, before everyone starts bouncing off of their "jump to conclusions" mats, keep in mind that technical revisions happen frequently with consoles. While this is one of the first publicized changes to the Xbox 360 - it won't be the last. Just like Sony's PS2 went through numerous changes, Microsoft's Xbox 360 will, and it's a safe bet we'll see revisions to the PS3 at some point. It happens, it's a part of the industry.

"Think about these [the three versions of the Xbox 360] as if they are bundles. The console is the same, we did some neat stuff because a lot of people said they liked black," Albert Penello, Director of Global Platform Marketing for Xbox, says, while he explains the new Elite version of the Xbox 360. "We think it's cool to try something interesting. When you're a new customer, what configuration makes sense for you? All three of these consoles are different bundles."
      media?id=3237250

For $479.99, here's what gamers will get

      # Xbox 360 Elite console. The console is equipped with a premium black finish and three powerful core processors capable of producing the best in HD entertainment (up to 1080p), 16:9 cinematic aspect ratio, anti-aliasing for smooth textures, full surround sound, HDMI output and DVD playback with upscaling capabilities right out of the box.
      # Xbox 360 120GB hard drive. The 120GB detachable hard drive allows gamers to save their games and store television shows, movies, music, pictures, trailers, levels, demos and other content available from Xbox LIVE Marketplace.3 The hard drive is sold separately for an estimated retail price of $179.99 (U.S.).
      # Xbox 360 Wireless Controller (black). This award-winning, high-performance wireless controller, now in black, features the Xbox Guide Button for quick, in-game access to friends and music. It has a range of up to 30 feet and a battery life of 30 hours on two AA batteries. It is sold separately for an estimated retail price of $49.99 (U.S.).
      # Xbox 360 headset (black). Now available in black, the headset lets gamers strategize or trade taunts while playing games and send voice messages to friends on Xbox LIVE.
      # Xbox 360 HDMI cable. New to Xbox 360, HDMI allows consumers to get HD video (up to 1080p) and multichannel surround sound, all from one cable. (Editor's Note: The component/composite cable already included with the Xbox 360 is also in the Xbox 360 Elite box).
      # Xbox LIVE Silver Membership. With this, gamers can chat with friends online, collect achievements and gamerscores, send and receive voice and text messages, and access Xbox LIVE Marketplace content such as game demos, HD movies and TV, as well as the best in downloadable games from Xbox LIVE Arcade.
      # One-month subscription to Xbox LIVE Gold. An Xbox LIVE Gold Membership provides a complete online entertainment experience. Those who subscribe to this premium service can engage in competitive online multiplayer matches, tailor their matchmaking via feedback and accomplishments, chat with more than one person at a time, and take advantage of unique privileges in the Xbox LIVE Marketplace and Xbox LIVE Arcade.

Nitty gritty details aside, Penello did say the console is "the same." The almost-a-year-old announcement of a revised chipset -- one that will have the 360 running cooler and quieter -- hasn't bore fruit just yet, as the Elite SKU features the same 90 nm chip currently in Xbox 360 hardware.

The Elite SKU is not being released to replace the Premium (or the Core) versions of the console: "The Elite is not our new default SKU. The SKU that we still think is the sweet spot is the existing 20 gigabyte unit." Penello said. "We've got a unit for people that is more entry level. We're not going to start releasing 25 gigabyte downloads."

Additionally, for consumers concerned with how they will get save files from their existing 360 hard drive onto the new 120 gig -- the 120 gig HDD accessory, which retails for $179.99, has a cable and software built-in that will connect the HDD to the console with an HDD attached to it and transfer the files from one HDD to the other. People won't have to use a memory card to transfer the files and then re-download all of their old Arcade titles.

    • Peter Jackson's Halo Game to Be Episodic

GDC 2007: Peter Jackson's Halo Game to Be Episodic
One of two episodic projects Microsoft's on.

At X06 last September, Microsoft announced a collaboration with director Peter Jackson (The Lord of the Rings, King Kong) on not only an adaptation of the Halo series to the big screen, but several videogame projects, including one related to Halo. We've heard nothing on the team-up since, but Gamasutra reports Microsoft executive Shane Kim revealed Jackson's project would be one of two episodic series they're working on, while speaking at GDC

"Our deal with Peter is not about a film guy who wants to make video games. We're in the design phase now. The first series will be set in the Halo universe. In addition to this deal, Jackson continues to executive produce the currently on hiatus Halo feature film."

The typical model for episodic content has been delivering individual episodes via the Internet (or, in this case, Xbox Live) and then distributing a retail product encompassing all the released installments on a disc. Though too early to know if Microsoft will follow that model or something new, the Jackson collaboration is already unique.

    • Halo 3 Beta Will Reveal 'X' Button

Halo 3 Beta Will Reveal 'X' Button Functionality
But warns its use 'won't be all that surprising.'

Since Bungie and Microsoft started letting people mess around with Halo 3, the companies have continued to tease the supposed function of the X button on the controller. We know it's not sprinting, so what is it? Does it enable the shield hinted at in last year's teaser commercial? Can you quickly enable team-speak? Right now, Bungie isn't saying diddly about it, but we should know soon enough -- it'll be in the beta.

From the company's recently updated FAQ:

Will we see the function of the mysterious X button?
Yes. Whether or not it'll still be mapped to X is subject to change. And honestly, it won't be all that surprising. Just cool.

In other news, the beta will let you join parties with friends and take advantage of the excellent matchmaking system devised for Halo 2, but has since been woefully underutilized in any online shooter since.

The latest Bungie Weekly Update has revealed the current controller layout for the Halo 3 multiplayer mode. Frank O'Connor explains:

Here’s what the control layout is on the latest internal builds, just for reference. I personally think it’s working pretty well, and wouldn’t change a thing, but we’ll see. Besides, you can pretty much remap the control layout to suit whatever you like, but here we go:

Left and right sticks: Movement and look. Just like H2.

Click left and right sticks: Crouch and zoom â€" just like H2, although there is a “toggle crouch†option, so that you can stay crouched until you click the stick again.

      A: Jump

B: Melee attack. Note: B may also be used to activate a subtle, but nifty context-sensitive feature.

      Y: Switch to next weapon.

X: Activate mysterious new feature which on the cool scale falls somewhere between “crouch†and “activate Fantanas on speed dial.â€Â

      LT: Toss grenade.

      RT: Shoot weapon.

LB: Cycle grenade type (you have at least three types of grenade now, so they must be cycled rather than switched).

RB: Pick up weapon/activate stuff/reload/use turrets and so on.

Note: If you hold LB while standing over a dual wieldable weapon, you’ll pick it up in your left hand â€" a huge improvement over the “Y†button in Halo 2. This doesn’t affect grenade cycling, because you can still tap LB to cycle grenades, but you can’t toss ‘em while dual wielding anyway. So it’s moot. After about ten minutes of play, it feels incredibly natural, with the lone downside that you have trouble adjusting when you go back to Halo 2. But more vitally, LB reloads the weapon in your left hand, individually when you’re dual-wielding.

BACK: Calls up the Multiplayer “player menu†â€" where you can mute jerks, see gamer data and so on. The back button is useful, but tough to press in really hectic action, since it’s so close to the Guide button.

START: Pause menu (which is translucent so you can adjust controls without losing track of what’s on screen) and one or two other significant goodies we haven’t revealed yet. From here you can also end or quit a game, naturally.

D-PAD: Used for sweet circular fighting game moves. No wait, my bad - it is currently used to activate team chat, but that’s very provisional. This is being given a lot of care and attention and is tied to other matters, such as your default settings and how team chat and proximity voice work. You’d be amazed how much testing and thought goes into this stuff.

The update has also revealed new concept art the Microsoft Game Studios marketing team has created for the game:
