    • Game Reviews, the pros vs the gamers?

      Marinealver

So looking at some of the commentary for a game that has been recently published called Total War: Rome 2. It was brought to my attention by a youtube channel the Angry Joe Show who by the most part criticized it heavily based around the numerous bugs and technical errors. So started to look at the game reviews done by professional journalists and noticed a trend. The professional journalists site Gamespot gave it a good review while the users or should I just say other people who played the game and commented on the website gave it horrible reviews. This was a common trend where you look at metacritic which conglomerates all the journalist sites and their grading scale and compare it with others and the trend was the same. The pros gave it a thumbs up while the Ams commentators on the site gave it a thumbs down. The positive reviews focused on the features and gameplay concepts while the negative ones focused on technical performance and bugs within the gameplay. Now the ones done by professional journalist do acknowledge that there are numerous bugs, but they don't let it effect their opinion that much. While the user commentary are outraged at the game and even more so at the journalists who gave it a positive review.

So as a disclaimer I have not played the game yet so this is all an outside hypothesis but here is what I think the cause of such a contrast between reviews form professional journalist and the amateur reviews written from site commentators who said they played the game. Just like consoles as they are moving up to the next gen so are PC moving up into a next tier where now you have hexacore (that's right 6 cores instead of 4) computers. Now professional journalists especially those whose occupation revolves around reviewing games have way more resources than your average casual gamer who has some spare time to post on a website. First of all they can easily upgrade their rig dropping say $300=$1,000 a year and write it off as a business expense. While your casual gamer has to balance their budget with respects to rent/mortgage, utilities, groceries, commuting and other expenses. Furthermore journalists are often given a "reviewers" copy of the game during the production stage as the game is getting published by the companies PR on the publishers expense merely giving the journalist a non-disclosure date (usually expiring on the release date of the game). Where as the casual gamer will have to purchase the game at a local retailer. Another expense that will slow down the upgrading of the personal computer from minimum specifications range to above recommended specifications. So while journalists might only notice a few minor bugs and graphical errors, the casual gamer will experience game crashes and freezing frame rates with graphical tears making it a much different experience.

Now many of these bugs and performance issues will be patched and fixed in the following months as always but this brings up another trend in the industry. That is the willingness to release a product before all the bugs were removed. Now this has been noted in many games including those AAA titles such as "Call of Duty" (I know easy target everyone aims at). However the number of bugs in newly released titles has became increasingly apparent compared back in a few years ago where a game that would crash on the PC even once or twice would be considered unplayable even by professional journalists. Why would publishers and developers released games with known technical issues and journalists are more forgiving than a few year back would probably be contributed to more and more people with gaming computers being online instead of offline. With that more games are requiring online connections so problems such as bugs can be fixed after the release. Many games even bought at the retailers are not the game but a download service program (such as steam) with a product code (one you may have to type in) and a small manual. You have to get the game you just bough at the store from an online service. Take a look at consoles even, the whole online DRM requirement which gave Microsoft a public opinion backlash shows that industry trend (while highlighting the digital divide). The industry knows when you got online games you can fixed them easily by a post release patch, where as a few years ago there was a good probability that the customer did not have a continuous online connection. If the game could not be updated regularly it cannot be patched and fixed. Also the consumer base will find more bugs and technical errors than a cadre of hired or selected "beta testers" just on the sheer virtue of volume. A search done by a couple thousand people will always be more efficient than one done by a few hundred even if those few are more experienced. So with that being the case the industry more likely transfers budget and resource from testing the game and quality assurance to more features and advertisement through public relations.

So in a not so ordered nutshell that is the difference between the critiques of professional game review journalists and armature commentary from gamming community contributors. The professional reviewers have access to way more resources and better gaming PCs, and the industry as a whole to include the consumer base is more willing to have technical bugs fixed post release through online patches.

    • MLG puts me to sleep

So I woke up at 0700 (in my time zone) to see the HAL0 4 tournament. So there was a 8 free for all to eliminate half the competitors and then 1 on 1 to the finalist. All I can say is yawn. I fell asleep again not seeing who won nor do I care. All the match was BR headshots, when someone pick up a needler it was a highlight?!?! No teams, no vehicles, just BR headshot on a mildly interesting 8 battle royal then boring 1 on 1 matches. Hey want to know why LoL and DOTA or even gawd awful CoD is better for MLG? Because of variety, need different weapons, team play would be great because then those weapons specialist will be a help instead of a handicapped.

MLG just makes FPS games boring.

    • Halo 4 Review.

      Marinealver

Well I am sure no one needs to read my review, because of my location, schedual, life and prety much everything by now you have already played the game and gone through everything by now. so this is just more of my impressions of Halo 4 (and yeas I am not spelling it HAL0 like I used to).

First and formost, I will admit I started out as one of the most cynical oponions about the fact that microsoft was making another Master Chief halo story after Bungie had already dropped it and moved on. Not suprised since it made the xbox so much money I'd figured a safer road would be to expand on the side stories or more of the other spartians, not continue the Master Chief saga. And if I did I would assume it would suck.

Well 343 Microsofts halo development company actually did the Halo triology some justice, to my suprised the game wasn't a disaster. It was actually kind of good. Story started out straight foward, MC running around a ship (or what is left of it) being boarded by covies and crash landing on a forerunner instilation. I had a strange feeling of Deja Vu. No flood and sentinals battles but instead those two have been replaced by the promethians. I was actually suprised not to see the flood because they have been on every forerunner structure but I guess for some it was a welcomed relief even though short lived thanks to the promethins acting as sort of a mix with the agressivness of the flood and the mechanical shootieness of the sentinals. Speaking of short, the campaign is one of the shortest campaigns of a halo series I have ever played. With ODST that overworld street level potentially offered endless campaign play as you can literally search the entire city for those audio logs while continueing to bump into covie patrols and reinforcements. yet I think with this they wanted to extend the short campaign with the Spartian Ops an episodic co-op mini campaign that comes out with 5 levels each week. Now while most metacritics don't care too much I actually liked it. It was something difrent and to be honest since it wasn't master chief you didn't really care if it follow the story that much. It seem like a UNSC patrol conducting missions elsewhere while the chief is busy doing what he dose best save humanity. However I will admit most of the levels on spartian ops are like a small firefight chunk of a campaign map or even on a multiplayer map, and they get repetitive. Go take out an objective, or turn on a switch, kill all bad aliens, repeat till game is won.

Now for some of the things I didn't quite like besides the short campaign even though the story was still epic MC saves planet earth and the humans still putting up a hell of a fight. They in the background actually help chief rather then just sit back and hope that he wins. (well atleast twords the end). Okay the bad, well multiplayer gameplay is more like HAL0 3. There is no dual wielding so it is not exactly but with 3 weapon polls human covenant and forerunner and 3 diffrent grenades. The forerunner weapons while the pistol and the rocket launcher acted difrently from any other weapons. They were all clip loaded so they felt more like the brute weapons all hyped up with fancy forerunner laser tech and what not. Covienant weapons were still crap but since all weapons do more shield damage it didn't matter. Did I mention they did away with the health bar again? As for the UNSC I see they had a tough decision on which rifle to bring back, the Battle Rifle or the DMR. So they brought them both back, now add with the covenant carbine and the new promethian light rifle, you had 4 scoped rifles along with the pistol, all focusing on those ever so important headshots that MLGrs scream if the weapon can't get a bonus headshot then it don't belong in the game. Add the sniper rifle, the covenant beam rifle from H2/3, and the new Promethian binary rifle which is just a 2 shot sniper with more body damage it just seemed that the whole new selection of weapons tend to merge together to the point where they loose their distinctivness. Speaking of weapons the covie weapons also get a nerf bat like always. Still baffles me to this day why all covenant weapons (who were on the verge of making us extinct) are always weaker than their UNSC counterparts? THe plasma pistol now drains so fast on an overcharge shot you can only get a max of 3. The plasma rifle has been replaced by a storm rifle which is nothing more than a plasma rifle that looks like a carbine. IMHO if they brought the DMR back they should have brought the plasma repeater with the reload to manual vent. They did bring the concussion rifle back but they left out the needle rifle. the oldie but a goodie needler is the only weapon that did get a buff and probibly good for it then. Also lets talk about my favorite subject of multiplayer gameplay the vehicles. Well the UNSC forgot how to fly. No Hornet of Falcon, now in their defense you finally get to fly the Pelican in Campaign and a UNSC Space bomber much like the saber from Reach but in Multiplayer you got the Banshee as the only flying vehicle. All the oldies but goodies the ghost, warthog, scorpain tank along with other vets like the mongoose, wraith, and the guass and rocket hog are also back. However what is missing is obviously the middleweight covenant, the spectre from H2 and the Revenant from Reach. The forerunners have no need for vehicles as most of them fly or teleport.

    • Planetside 2 Premature Launch

      Marinealver

Well SOE announced the Planetside 2 Launch Date to be the end of November, jut in time for the holiday madness.
      planetside-2-19-618x384.jpeg
Just to say after experiencing the beta I am the least bit impress with SOE and all the more disapointed in Planetside 2. It is just that Planetside had so much more than Planetside 2. Planetside had more land and contenants, had more area to fight over, heck you could even leave the outside of the contenant for a bit before getting killed by out of bounds. Now you cant even leave the squar contenant. Also Planetside had rivers and water and bridges, even amphibious vehicles to cross those if you want to try and bypass or outflank a bridge battle. Planetside 2 has none of that.
      PSScreenShot0216.jpg
Glitchy MAXs, Tanks, lots of Bugs and Crashes, Bad Base design, they had to revamp their resource ecenomic system because it encourage people to farm by being AFK thus locking out the server. It just sucked. Once again Sony Online entertainment has taken all the potential and given a big pile of failure.
      mqdefault.jpg
Well it is a new MMOFPS and mabey the Battlefield fans will like it allot. After all so much was taken from those games to be put into that game, but as a former Planetside Player I would say it is a less of a game. The contenant is so little and the area is being released with fewer vehicles and fewer contenants it is not meeting anywhere near its potential and what the last game even reached. Well launch is in november. We will see what happens then. Untill then.

    • Planetside 2 Beta

      Marinealver

Well as a long time Planetside player I have gone to enjoy MMO FPS (I whish they would have made one out of HAL0, mabey a Spartian vs Elite and mabey add the Brutes as a 3rd playable faction but they will seriously have to nerf the UNSC faction considerabliiy because everyone will play it)

Well the NDA has been lifted and now people can post videos on you tube and tell about there experience.

      www.youtube.com/watch?v=gcihA-PpRqA&featu...

Planetsidde 2 gameplay forums video listing

Well my impressions. Being a first Planetside which was more of an MMO engine adapted the an FPS the developers wanted to make it an FPS first and then an MMO. So they added more features such as ADS switch the block window inventory with a customizable class system, and redid the certification with resources, and the lattice (which was a set of line conecting the bases forcing empires to take over adjacent bases instead of avoiding fights to "backhack") has been reset to a hexagon/influence system which meens capturing adjacent teritories will be quicker than ones far away from teritories you control.

Now in the attempt to emulate a "modern" FPS game and capture the FPScrowd they made it allot like well prettymuch every recient run-of-the-mill FPS game. It feels more like a Battlefield Online instead of a sequal to Planetside. They also replaced the stealthy groud mobile AMS ot more of the powerful air mobile galaxy as the mobile deployed spawn point.

IMHO it is too much like Battlefield with the whole conquest capture mechanics (all though on some bases they added a "rush" mode) They also need to work allot on ballancing in the class system. There is too many MAXs and no one wants to play Heavy Assault when they could MAX instead. Also they foucsed too much on Instant Deploy into the fight with more focus on drop pods and instant action which make the game so fragmented as there is no "frontline" on the battlefield. Tanks are too weak and Air is too powered. Base design is just awful as is but they should have some fixs to it soon.

Well chack out the videos and if you can sign up for the beta. I would like to see you there.

    • Planetside Day (corection)

      Marinealver

Well my favorite MMO is finally going off line. After 9 years of following the zerg (aka mass of noobs) crashing bases in my Magrider, speeding around in a Mossie, Sneaking on by with a thresher, hacking bases, jacking tanks and blowing up generators it is finally time to retire.
      http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JCPvmkcF49o

Comming up this weekend the 1st of the month of July is the last day for Planetside. I'll be there as the Vanu Soverginty Player Marinealver

      http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Ldt8vYlst8&feature=player_embedded

Not is all Sad as that means the end of Planetside 1 means the begening of Planetside 2 The Beta will be comming up shortly and right after that is the real game.

      Hope to see you there.

Well the last day was a rumor. It was just a day where they opend all the accounts to a free year and gave everyone in attendence the beta. Well be on and off can't say too much because of the NDA, but it is in beta. Needs allot of work. to be honest there really isn't much there.

      FOR THE SOVERGINTY!!!!!

    • Brief thoughts on HAL0 4

      Marinealver

Well as it is the first HAL0 game not developed by Bungie, I am for one skeptical (which isn't surprisingly considering my pessimistic nature). But not without cause, the last Bungie franchises that they made with publishers always go down once Bungie left. Myth was the first game that they did with Rockstar as well as Oni. Both Myth 1 and 2 and Oni were great games. Both stayed with Rockstar when Bungie left. Myth 3 sucked and there was no sequel to Oni.

So with 343 Industries made solely for keeping the HAL0 franchise with Microsoft here is the test to see if they will break what history has proclaimed. After all Bungie did intend for HAL0 to end with 3. Otherwise they would have given it a HAL0 2 ending.

Don't get me wrong they have some good ideas such as the co op episode campaign release. One might guess they are trying to make it an MMO (sort of what Blizzard did with Warcraft 3 hero experment). I was sad to see they dropped the elite. I love the whole Covie vs UNSC if they didn't make the covenant weapons suck so bad. (Weren't those the guys who was supposed to be kicking our asses in the war?) Anyway off in a tangent.

To be honest I haven't played much HAL0 recently. I still have my droppod map that is on hiatus for an undetermined period of time due to all the physic bugs I cant work out. Also there was a time for a few months I haven't played video games at all. Well I might rent it just like I did with MW3. Still looking forward to Planetside 2. High hopes as I did with Planetside which were crushed but still play the game. I'll see you all later.

Well, I wouldn't really say they are cool considering Chrysler is having to merge I believe and GM's CEO is being asked to step down due to the company hasn't done well at all during the time he's been CEO. Although what I really have a problem with myself is the ridiculous spending bill Obama passed that was supposed to stimulate the economy yet has 8,500 earmarks and isn't supposed to do anything for years to come. Some of the programs in the bill are ridiculous. I myself don't see how a "pig smell management program" is supposed to stimulate the economy. -_-

But about the weight? Yeah... it was totally the Navy. I hit 30 while I was in Great Lakes in the middle of what's called 'spring' that far north, so I was doing a lot of sitting around and studying for the school I was in... didn't do a lot of PT on my own. And we all know that there is NO PT in the fleet. Even the higher-ups around here freely admit that the navy has no PT uniform. That was a funny email.
