So a few nights ago, my brother, our cousin, and I were coming "home" to this hotel where we (sans said cousin) have been staying. We pull up to the curb behind the building when we notice two guys climbing out of a back window. The two run and go behind this architectural building behind the hotel. Then this other guy jumps from a second story window, onto a bus, then jumps of and proceeds to run and climb a fence.

Curious, we start walking to the front of the hotel where we find several people standing in the parking lot. Apparently there were gunshots, and some guy had gotten away via cab (later we find out that the driver was forced at gun point to do so). Management breaks down the door to find no body or blood, but two cartridges.

Cops are called and subsequently come. Because we had actually seen some guys involved with the even, we had to stick around. As a safety precaution, the cops had to pat us down... I felt so dirty... especially when he pulled my hair...

After that the whole thing ended up being pretty uneventful. A news camera guy came by but since no body was found he left. But that was the first time I've ever felt the cruel forceful hand of the law feeling me up... wonder if it will call.

While I'm sure some readers despise Nabokov for writing stuff like Lolita which could be viewed as pure perversion, to overlook him is to miss out on one of the greatest minds to ever pick up a pen and write. In addition to his literature (almost 20 novels, and several short stories collections), he also contributed hundreds of poems and plays to the fortunate readers of the world. Aside from writing original work, Nabokov translated several works from his native Russian into English (and vice-versa, one of note being Alice's Adventures in Wonderland) and was a notable critic of his time. He also created chess problems and hunted butterflies, but I believe this mini-bio has gone on long enough.

Personally, I fell in love with his work after (or more accurately while) I read Lolita. His writing showcases both a supreme command of language, as well as a love of playing with it that has never been matched. Having finished Lolita, I went on to read The Eye, Ada or Ardor, Transparent Things, Mary and several short stories collections. At one point I had started reading The Gift, but had to put it on hold until I could give it more attention. The problem with this book is the one flaw I have found in Nabokov's work. He tended to ramble on about whatever came to mind. For the most part, this merely enriched the story, giving the characters a more complex human quality. Yet this sort of thing can grow tiresome after reading five pages about chess.

I would like to know other people's thoughts on this writer and look forward to your replies.

Yes I know I've said before that I would be more active, but now I'm actually taking the initiative and doing stuff here. First off, as you've probably already seen, I've completely redone my images. Rather than posting images I find online, I decided to post a selection of my wallpapers from DeviantArt (I actually have more than 60 in my gallery there.)

I'm working on updating my profile as well. While it may seem odd to do this while I'm not actually socializing on the site, I want to get a fresh start before I really get back into the swing of things.

I've missed you all and hope to hear from you again.

I've been getting back into writing lately and since I found it to be a better means of getting my stuff out there, I've started using my deviant art account. So far I've gotten about 25 poems there and I plan to add more. I've also been adding my visual stuff little by little and will post photographs I take once I get a camera. So since I've become almost non-existent here on rvb, if you want to keep in touch and up to date, check me out over there.

      It's happening again,
      Not that they will care.
They, who set it all into motion.
Each desire a reason, each aching heart a consequence.
      Rippling images of her smile
Memories torn asunder in the torrent of newfound reason.
      It's happening again,
      Not that they will care.
      Another love unripened,
      Brittle, within my jaded heart.
Love is just a word right? Yet...
Each time it fades away, part of me fades in suit.

      Pleasure, fulfillment, and unity:
All things I alone am undeserving of.
      It's happening again,
      Not that they will care.

I've been sick these past few days, but went to school today so I didn't miss too many days. It kind of sucked making everything up, but one thing made it all worth while.

I was listening to music on the bus ride home. There was this lady at the front talking to the driver casually, holding her young son on her lap. Out of nowhere, the driver handed the kid a cookie. The kid held it cautiously and looked it over. Then he looked back at me. I stared at him gravely and shook my head, mouthing the word "no". I could see the uncertainty in his eyes turn into a mortal sense of fear. He looked back at the cookie, staring quietly. He remained that way until about ten minutes later when they got off.

That's gonna haunt him forever smiley0.gif

I drew closer to the man on the bench
He was napping to escape reality
Our lives connected for one fateful moment
I lightened my footfalls as not to wake him
He clutched his stiff cotton coat to his chest
Our breaths puffed out in sync
      I noted his appearance
      His corkscrew hair long abandoned
His leather like face browned by the sun
His sandpaper hands screeched softly as they rubbed his coat
He awoke slowly, his eyes clouded by his own failure
Our eyes met as we silently acknowledged our individual grievances
I resumed walking leaving that moment behind, I could not help him nor he me.

It was raining that night… I couldn’t sleep much. It seemed like the only thing that was real was you… but even that I couldn’t call mine. (Mine… such a selfish word… or is it instead the lips that form it that are so selfish?) Such a strange feeling laying in the same bed as you. I never felt so close to you, yet we two were so far apart. All I could do was watch you.
Your eyes were as warm as ever… unfaltering in their brilliance despite being deep in slumber. Your hair hung down tracing your jaw line as if to tease me. A few strands draped across your face. Your neck was in clear view beneath your hair. Your skin glowed faintly in the moonlight. Your lips quivered slightly… you were dreaming.
My eyes moved slowly down your delicate form, taking in the subtle beauty I yearned to have for myself. Your shoulders had a sort of sadness to them, exposed and vulnerable to the evils of the night. Your chest heaved in a not particularly cliché manner. The rest was veiled by your blanket… the rest I left to the imagination… I was dreaming.
Guilt stuck hard in my throat… I looked away… I owed at least that much to you. Upon the second pass, I decided to slip the blanket up over your shoulder, protecting them from the evils… the desperate urges of a 16 year old boy being one of them.
You clutched at the blanket bemusedly… somewhat relieved, somewhat disappointed. I slowly reached out and brushed the few misplaced strands of hair back behind your ear. You vaguely nuzzled my hand, drawn to the warmth by a primal instinct. My hand lingered there for a few last moments, softly stroking your cheek with the side of my thumb.
I slowly pulled away and rolled over onto my back with finality. My hands fell to my sides, clenched at first and finally releasing along with a sigh from both of us.
I closed my eyes and slowly at last drifted to sleep, lulled by the rain pattering outside the window, and your breathing at my side.
I suppose unrequited love isn’t so bad. The memory of that special moment with you will keep me warm through rainy nights and in my dreams… for that’s all my love will bear… bitter-sweet dreams… the price I’ll forever pay for being just a friend.

I hate internet right now... my ISP is still down at home, and the school network is down. I'm lucky my mom has internet...

Anyway my days have been pretty stale lately... I get home from school only to have to sit at my computer for hours(with no internet mind you). This isn't by choice really, my dad and brother have invaded my room during the day. At least I get to sleep in my bed... got that going for me. Oh and I'm in the middle of reading The Great Gatsby right now. Anyone read it?

In the midst of my boredom I've been cyber doodling using the paint program and writing stuff for my creative writing class. I'll put some doodles (don't expect a masterpiece... just abstract crap representing nothing... looks kind of cool though) in my gallery. The pics are small because I'm going for different tiling effects. You'll see what I mean if you set one as a wallpaper. Every now and then I'll try and post a story or poem I've written. Eventually when my internet is finally back at home, I can set up the layout for my journals that I wanted to do.
Just rambling I guess.. just wanted you to know I'm not dead smiley8.gif

I've been feeling kind of weird lately... whenever I fill in the favorite music section of a profile (oddly not on my one here...) on a site, I put in something to the air of "british new wave and anything japanese". The reason I felt weird is that while thanks to my dad I've been getting exposed to lots of new british bands, I really have yet to hear much japanese music. Sure I listen to and still enjoy L`Arc~en~Ciel (and all the members' solo projects), and AKFG, but that's really only scratching the surface of all the music japanese artists have created over the years.
So lately I've been looking up lists of bands and watching their vids on youtube. Although I'm finding that I do in fact enjoy almost all japanese music, I can't seem to get into VK or visual kei bands. I'm finding myself much more drawn to pure and honest bands who just make music for the purpose of making music. And often times I find that vk bands are just going for shock and not much quality (then again it could all be a matter of personal preference.). Anyway I've only started really searching last night, but I have a few bands to share with you. Who knows, people who don't even listen to japanese music might like something.(main links are to wikipedia entries for each band; sublinks are to a video to get a taste for each band)

      Current favorites
+the pillows+(people have been comparing these guys to the beatles and weezer. I myself don't like to compare two bands since it's unfair to both bands.)
      -----Hybrid Rainbow

+Casiopea+(A jazz fusion band formed in the seventies. They've released over 30 albums. It's odd... I used to never give jazz a second thought, but now I find myself liking it more and more.)
      -----FightMan

Like I said, I only started looking last night and those are the two bands that really stood out for me. I did find a few other videos that I like but if you know anything about japanese music, you probably already know about these next two... they're both pop idols. Not to say they don't deserve the fame.

      +Utada Hikaru
-----Sanctuary(You'll probably recognize this song as the theme song to KH2. I just get entranced by it.)

+Ayumi Hamasaki(I love her eyes, though I wish she'd stop trying the "western look" as much as she does. I think she's much more attractive in "japanese mode")
-----Game(I actually saw this video a while ago and liked it for the audio itself. But now that I found it with the subtitles I'm starting to see why Ayu is acclaimed as a lyricist...*watches video again*mmmheart.png)

Actually no, I was trying to use the name of a minor character in rvb. It wasn't until after I signed up that I learned that his name was spelled Max Gain.

Cool, yeah the Gita is a controvesial section, as it has clearly been edited over time, and contradicts itself a lot. It really has nothing to do with the main story, even though it is all happening in a frozen moment of time right before the beggining of the battle.

Yeah, I have seen some translators who are afraid to stray too far from the origional, and they often reuse a lot of descriptors, but eh.

Anyway, I hope you have a chance to read the Ramayana at some point, as it is also a great read

Anyhoo, how well written was it? I have never read that translation

That is an awsome name. Perhaps I should adopt a child, name it that, and then give it up for adoption again... hmmmm

    • fifthofnever

Wow, that's great I'm glad you enjoyed it. The Ramayana is the other big time indian epic but of course there are shorter ones.

Hey, would you mind telling me which translator you read? I have several, but I'm always on the lookout for others.

Yeah, there are times when they seem to go in circles, and apparently the original verse form is much much worse in this regard, that;s the main reason it can be shortened so much.

    • fifthofnever

Isn't just so addicting though?! Yeah, it's usually translated to story form, and the names are hell, but mine had a character list that helped a lot. I'm flattered that you picked it up on my suggestion and I'm glad you're enjoying it. Let me know what you think when you're done.

yeah, very good sign. I tried reading plutarch once, and hated it, thought it was crap, then found a good translation, and it was like night and day. Love the man now.

yeah, Miyamoto Musashi was a bad ass MF! He's so bad ass, the stories have to be true! lol Yeah, also the Ramayana is also a great indian epic. those are the two main ones. Make sure you get good translations though

Hey, we have'nt spoken in quite some time. How've you been? Sorry if I haven't checked up on you in some time now. Myself, well I thought I'd get into something a little productive. And something that'd help me feel more at ease at the same time. So, I'll give you a banner to help explain.

Are we so sure that to simply let nature run its course, not dwell on the past, and live according to our nature as animals makes us "higher"?

Ha-ha I messed this up. What I meant to say was "Are we so sure that to simply let nature run its course, not dwell on the past, and live according to our nature as animals isn't the 'higher' path?"

      lol dumbass

    • daruma

Okay, I'm jumping into the conversation a little late, but:

think about this: Why can humans have so much higher feelings than everything else? We donate body parts to the needy, we love children, and remember the dead, better than any regular animal can. We even have a conscience, RIGHT OR WRONG. Animals kill each other for food. We realize that some things, like stealing, are wrong and most of us choose not to do it. I think that proves the existence of a soul

Such is the arrogance of the human animal. We assume that A) "regular animals" don't feel these things, and B) the fact that we do makes us better, or in DarkPlaya's words, "higher". Are we so sure that to simply let nature run its course, not dwell on the past, and live according to our nature as animals makes us "higher"? Other animals are not right or wrong, good or evil, they simply are. A lion doesn't kill an antelope because it's an evil, malicious lion, he kills it because that's just what lions do. We think we know right from wrong, but this is based on the assumption than the world revolves around us, and that we are even in a position to judge what is right and what is wrong. We are no better or worse than the dogs in the street, the blades of grass on the ground, or the king of the jungle because of the great equalizer: death. Sooner or later, we all end up as food for something.

    • MaxGayne

But isn't the fact that we know right and wrong based on the system of morals that we're tought? Wait... what was that thing about loving children?
