    • The Short Update: A Documentary

      Max_Jackson

I log into this site all the time, but I never update because I don't have the time to punch out a long, well thought out journal like I used to do. I just checked my messages and saw I never got an alert for a message sent 5 months ago! Way to fail at alerts RT technology. Also checked in on all my friends here and noticed there are some that are worse off than I am. One of my friends hasn't updated a journal since 2006. Two of my friends don't even have accounts here anymore! Guess they forgot to let me know when that happened.

That being said, I need to find a way to link my FB status updates and my Twitter updates to my journal.

My life's way more manageable at a 140 character maximum.

      Max_Jackson

Today is the last day of school in our county before break. If that wasn't enough cause for mental breakdown among the kids, they've now announced on the news that its possible it could start snowing around noon today.

To make a long story short, if I can make it through today, I'll be able to relax... finally... tomorrow!

    • Our Backwards Health Care System

      Max_Jackson

This is, by no means, a political journal. I just want to point out how stupid this health care system is currently.

This morning I woke up with an odd pain in my left foot. Its almost like a stabbing pain in the joint connecting my big toe to the foot itself. That being said, it hurts to put pressure on it, it hurts to touch it, it hurts to move it much at all. My walking consists mainly of hobbling around or an over-exaggerated step, to put as little pressure on the toe as possible. It didn't work as well as I thought it would.

I've done my morning routine by now and I'm trying to get dressed for work, which is a very slow process. It becomes even slower when I try to put my shoes and socks on. I thought to myself that since I would be working at both jobs today I would have to wear sneakers for the comfort but also the supportability. Yes, I had already thought this far ahead.

After 5 minutes of stopping and starting I had my shoes on and as soon as I stepped onto the foot, pain shot through my entire left leg. It took everything I had left in my to stand up again, but I realized the way my shoes were curved, it was going to make walking today a pain all over. So, I took my shoes and socks off and called my father.

      He didn't answer.

I called the Podiatrist's Office (which is literally a stone's throw from my apartment complex) and asked if I could come in and have someone look at my foot because I wasn't sure what was wrong with it, but it hurt really badly.

The woman on the other end asked me if I had been there before.

I replied that I had come in many years ago for some ingrown toenail surgery (yes, don't ask), but hadn't been in in many years.

To which she informed me that she had nothing available for today, but she could schedule me an appointment for Friday morning.

I told her that because my foot was hurting now I really couldn't wait until 2 days from now and she thanked me for my time and then we hung up. Great! The foot doctor who only looks at feet will be busy looking at feet until Friday morning. Just, not my foot!

      - - -

Luckily there was a secondary podiatrist office just up the street who I could call for an appointment.

The nice lady on the phone asked me the same question. "Have you been in to see us before?"

      "I have not," I replied.

"Then we do not have any appointments for this morning," she bemused.

      Fantastic!

      - - -

Finally I was able to get in touch with my father, who recommended that I call my primary care physician and the orthopedics office just up the street as well (we're surrounded by doctor's offices BTW) to see if I could get in to see either of them as soon as possible. He stated that what I was describing sounded like Gout, although I was far too young to be experiencing anything like that, so to have them take a look at my foot and get an x-ray. Thank goodness we have a physician in the family. Too bad he's on the other side of the state.

      - - -

I called both offices and tried to schedule an appointment with both. I first dialed my primary medical doctor and left all of my information with them so they could call me back and schedule an appointment. Then I called up the Orthopedics office and was put right through to an actual person who set me up with their foot specialist @ 1:30 PM this afternoon. Not the quickest appointment, but definitely a lot more manageable than Friday morning!

      - - -

After ending that phone call I was feeling pretty good. I had my appointment for that afternoon, all I had to do was wait.

I got a return phone call from my primary doctor's nurse saying that they had an appointment for me at 11:30 AM.

I thought that that would be perfect, so I scheduled that one as well, knowing that if I could take the earlier one and they could tell me what's up, then I could just call and cancel the other one before it got to be time for that appointment.

I had just written both appointments down, when the phone rang again.

It was the nurse from my doctor's office again.

"Michael," she said, "this is the Nurse from Dr. K's office again."

      "Yes?" I replied.

"I just pulled up your chart and it tells me that we haven't seen you in 5 years," she questioned.

      "Okay," I asked.

"At this office, when they don't see you for 3 years, they don't consider you a patient anymore," she said. "That means you have to start all over again and I don't have an appointment for you today."

      "Huh," I replied.

      "Goodbye," she responded.

      - - -

      WTF?

Good thing in the mess I didn't call and cancel that second appointment. Then I would have been screwed each way.

Guess I'll just hang out until 1:30 PM.

    • My Sudden Surprise

      Max_Jackson

I rushed home from work tonight to jump into some L4D with Heather and Rachel because its not everyday that you get to play videogames with some fabulous Kiwis. Unfortunately, my XBOX wouldn't connect to their game nor to their party, so I had to shut it off and try again. This time, we were able to connect, but once the game began, my box froze on me and I had to restart yet again. With the game still going, I was forced to spectate until I could jump in once there was a break.

Only, once there was a break, my XBOX froze again and I once again turned it off.

But then I turned it back on again and was struck with three flashing red lights, "the red ring of death."

This is the second time to happen in less than a year! I don't know if you recall, but I got the red ring back in January, and they were supposed to fix my problem. Unfortunately, they just reset it and delayed it happening again. Which it waited until today to do, when I had made plans to play L4D already.

Great timing Micro$oft. Way to go on your planning on that one! You definitely showed me!

The worst part of the entire ordeal is the fact that there's less than 10 days until ODST comes out. There's no way I'll get my box back in time and the worst worst part is, this is the only game I've ever pre-ordered. I never pre-order games because I just go in the day of and pick them up. Doesn't make sense to pre-order to me. But I did, and now I can't play it. Karma.

      Oh well.

This evening, very late, Heather and I will be killing many mucho zombies in L4D! I'm thinking it will probably be somewhere around 11:30 PM EST (my time), so if you're available for a couple of hours to jump on it, I say you join us on the XBL.

Much fun will be had by all. Headshots galore!

    • My Wedding Day

      Max_Jackson

In a little less than 16 hours I will be (for better or for worse) saying my vows to the woman I love. Its been an interesting road getting to this point and I can honestly say that I've loved every minute of it. She is my better half, my true love and my soul mate. You can call me whatever names you want, but I believe that 100% and will believe that until the day I die. So if you have any negative comments about that or marriage as a whole, take them somewhere else, I'm not fucking listening!

We finished the rehearsal and rehearsal dinner a few hours ago and I can tell you right now that tomorrow is going to be a hard day to get through with a dry eye. If you've never been in a place where your friends and loved ones fawn all over you; and tell you how their world is a much better place because you're in it; and they're so happy that you're happy, then I can't express to you what tonight was like.

I did find out that my natural reaction to seeing someone else cry is to hang my head and think about happy thoughts to keep myself from crying. I think its partly the fact that I don't like to see other people cry and partly the fact that I'm just a great big fucking softie! I also realized that once I get choked up, in order to still feel like a macho man, I let out an ungodly Viking yell to cover my emotions. It doesn't always work though!

The most important realization I made tonight was the fact that even though I have a degree in Communication and know just about everything there is to know about public speaking... when I become emotional, my default conversation turns to making fun of other people. It really makes a thank you speech hard to give when every other sentence backpedals what you just said the sentence before.

That being said, I'm off to try and get some rest this evening. Tomorrow's going to be even crazier and longer. Plus, tomorrow evening I get to have sex with my wife finally! Fuck yes!

I have a surprise for you folks too, but I have to wait until later to show you. Stay tuned for that as well!

    • My Destructive Satisfaction

      Max_Jackson

If you've followed my story for very long, then you know I used to work for a hellish company called UHaul. If you haven't followed me for very long, you now know that I previously worked for a hellish company called UHaul.

On my way to work this evening at B&N, I happened to drive by the UHaul lot that I used to work at in Durham and was taken back by the fact that there was nothing there. Apparently, recently they decided to bulldoze the lot of all the facilities left behind when they changed locations. I remembered them saying that at some point they would move locations and tear that one down, but there was just something about seeing the leftover rubble of a UHaul location that put a big smile on my face.

Now, I know they've just moved the evil corporation to some other place, but it made me smile that its nowhere near me now. Its moved far, far away. And all that's left is a pile of broken concrete and some shitty memories.
