      Microbe

Hi Everyone, due to a fellow Rooster Teeth community member not willing to partake in their challenge, it has inspired me to move forward with a goal to raise $500 for ALS Canada. I will be running in this years Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon and have created a fundraising page to help keep track of this goal. To start, I have donated $25 to my campaign. If we manage to reach $500, I will donate an extra $100. Please click on this link to help me reach this goal. Thanks!

I've been expending all my time working, resting and training for the Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon. I had to put some things on hold. About a year and a half ago while being unemployed, I spent some time working on some visual projects. I haven't touched any of them since. Looking back at a journal with a timeline of projects. My marathon training is in the timeline and I've stuck with the program so far. I'm glad I gave a realistic timeline for Division Six planning (2013-2015), because leaving a full-time job I hated to go back and work dead end jobs was both depressing and draining. I'm doing well so far and I'm enjoying my line of work. This hiatus needs to end sometime if I am to stay true to the timeline. After my marathon run, I'm going to dedicate time to the project and that's a promise.

Finished in 2:30:45. It's not the most impressive finish, but I finished. After crossing the finish line I realized that I'm going to have to do that distance a second time for the full marathon in October. A lot of work is ahead of me that's for sure.

      Microbe

Since my last update journal in May I lost about 21lbs (~9kg) 235 lbs - 214 lbs since I started training for the marathon in March. I've since brought my weight down to 205lbs which is an additional 9lbs (~4kg). This Sunday I have a 20K charity run, so that will let me know if I'm doing something right.

Btw, I'm still looking for sponsors for my run this Sunday. Click here to donate.

I'm heading to Brisbane, Australia September 3rd - 23rd with @tuckapenguin. I'm kinda excited and nervous at the same time. I mean, it is the land down under. The seasons are way backwards, so it'll be moving in to Australian spring when I head over there.

Also I think it will freak me out seeing the moon like this:
      moon-from-Australia.png

Do you see it? Not really? Let me compare with this picture of the Moon in Canada. How about now?
      moon-from-Northern-Hemisphe.png

To a Northern Hemisphere dweller, the moon is upside down! How neat is that? I'm also going to see a different sky with constellations and stars. I've always wondered about these things and I will eventually get to see it with my own eyes. It's the little things I get excited about. :)

Okay, I'm not nervous now. I'm looking forward to it.

    • Strengthening, Not Losing #STWM

      Microbe

I've notice for years, because of my on-and-off fitness regimen, people who notice a change in appearance acknowledge it as "losing weight". I've done the whole "lose weight" to look good far too many times in my life. More often than not I often feel underwhelmed and regrettably move into the regressive cycle where I undo what I tried to achieve in six months to a year. Sure, looking great to wear a pair of fitted jeans and a nice smaller than what you would normally wear t-shirt is always great, but to what end? Why focus on the superficial when human bodies have such hidden potential for functionality?

In 2011, I was presented with a challenge and I accepted it: Train for 3 months to run the Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Half-Marathon. I've never been a runner. Actually that's a lie, I joined the cross-country team in two consecutive years in elementary school that presented me with two (that's right two) participant ribbons. I also was a pee-wee soccer player and participated in Shotokan Karate classes. So it's safe to say that I've been on my feet the most of my early life. However, if you asked me if I was a runner prior to 2011, I would have laughed at the thought.

I ran almost every other day from July - October. I travelled a lot because of work, but that never stopped me from training. If there was no stretch of road to run where I lodged, I would try and do as many laps around the hotel. From the first week to the second, I noticed a change in my distances and how my body reacted to running for longer periods. There was improvement all around, but I knew I needed to see what others, more experienced than I had to say about running. This one book helped me a lot with correcting my running gait and showed me how to achieve more distance by reducing bodily exertion with certain movement methods. I never thought endurance running had any kind of method, but boy is it more than just putting one foot in front of the other. As October came, so did race day. All my training went out the window in the first half of the race. I was stupid, reckless... I ran as if I was going for the gold. It's one thing to train, but when you're actually running with a crowd of people it psyches you out and you forget that the race is more of a "personal race" than a "who comes in 1st race".

After finishing my first half-marathon, I wanted more! I had plans to run in the Ottawa Marathon in May of 2012, the Boston Half-Marathon and Chicago. But the stress of balancing work and personal life became to great that led me again into the great regression cycle I was too familiar with. Looking back at this, I realized that my priorities and goals were all wrong. My first priority was too lose weight for superficial results and second was to gain enough strength to endure the run. Instead what I ended up with at the end of three months was more strength in my legs with minimal superficial changes to my body (other than shapely calves and quadriceps). I initially assumed that if I ran, my whole body will compensate. NOPE! Just the lower half!

So here I am in 2014, giving myself seven months to train for my first Marathon. I have more resources to train with than I did before. If there are any superficial changes they are only minimal. I actually had a co-worker ask me if I was losing weight. I said yes, instead of being an ass an letting them know I'm strengthening and not losing.
      -----
This coming July I will be running 20K in the Jazz Run which will help raise money for East York General Hospital. I have much attachment to this hospital, because not only is it the hospital where both my nieces (Marlena and Lunalyse) were born, but the staff helped bring my second niece (Lunalyse) back to life after being born with no vital signs present. My goal is to raise $200 by July 27th on the day for the run and so far I've raised $50. I would appreciate it if any of you would sponsor my run. Any amount will help. To sponsor me please click on this link: my.e2rm.com/PersonalPage.aspx?registratio...

Since my assessment (April 12) I was 235 lbs (~106 kg). Did a weigh in at 214lbs (~97 kg) yesterday which is a loss of 21lbs (~9kg). I'm at the muscle building portion of my training which will help with further fat burning... If I do it right. Not looking to bulk just enough to sustain. I've tested my stamina about a week ago and it stinks! I can't seem to go 20 minutes without major fatigue. Guess I'll have to change my mental tricks, because the old one isn't working any more.

About 2 years ago I bought Autodesk's iPad app Sketchbook Pro. It was okay at the time using a generic stylus pen. About a month ago I picked up a Wacom Intuos Bamboo Stylus and started sketching using it's pressure sensitive tip to ink. I'm actually enjoying it more than my Intuos tablet I bought for my desktop, because working on the iPad feels like working on paper (well sort of). I mean the instant feedback of what I'm putting my "pencil" on creates a line is a huge advantage than looking at a cursor on a giant screen.

Anyway, Sketchbook Pro added a timelapse feature and I managed to record a drawing I made during my break. I would have done more to it, but I wanted to keep every layer (rough to finish). Apparently the app only allows a maximum of three layers. Bummer!

Here's the video clip (35 sec)

Heya Microbe! Yup, I'm on the run from the Aussie law after putting one too many sheep in my tuckerbag! I'm actually on a three-month leave until work back home resigns my contract. I'm on the outskirts of Toronto in Markham which is pretty peaceful but my hosts live in a basement so the lack of natural light and no yard seem bizarre to me.

Honestly, if there's even the remote possibility that you could go to PAX, I would STRONGLY suggest getting 3 single day passes now, and then seeing if you can swing the trip. If for some reason you could go, it's a certainty that you'd be able to sell the passes for at least what you paid for them.

Richmond itself is pretty small with nothing really to do. Now there are some places you may want to go (that I won't be able to :-( not 21 until July 22) that I'm going to go ahead and suggest:

The Paddy Wagon (Pub) Jerzees (club). (I can't get in) We have a few other bars but they're pretty seedy.

We have a mall that was built within the past year (w00t!) that has a few restaurants and stores and a new movie theater.

We have a Sports Grill, Madison Gardens that's alright... they have specials on drinks all the time... If I think of anything else I'll let you know! I'll contact Spam!
