It's been a little over a month since I've started training for the Toronto Waterfront Marathon (Oct 19). I've gone back to my training discipline when did the half-marathon. I cut red meat out of my diet entirely and no alcohol for as long as I'm training. Do I miss it? No, not really. I find it's easy for me to quit things cold turkey when I have a goal set.

Since joining a gym, I've been taking advantage of it since day one. I've been going at least four days a week. There are times where I would add just that one extra day to fill in the void of a day off from work. It's really paying off, because I have access to things I never did the first time around I was training for the half-marathon. Back then, I was training purely on my own body weight. At least now, I can now work to gain strength in the three major areas (legs, core and arms). Running a marathon isn't just about putting one leg in front of the other, although those are the fundamentals of the whole thing, but there really is a technique and discipline around the whole experience. I'll share this information some other time.

      ---

Haven't touched on anything creative as of yet. This delay is really tough, but such is life. Balancing things in life is something I yet have to master.

use elliptical or row machines for 30 mins each when you feel a slight deep tissue pain in the foot or ankle. It will render you bed ridden for two days or more.

I ended up ICEing (Ice, compress and elevate) my foot when I got back from work Sunday and spent my time on the couch all day yesterday. I had to hop on one foot around the house which isn't fun if you have cats whose first instinct is to rub against your legs when you're out and about. All these precautions seemed to have paid off. I can walk on it, but with a weird tense gait.

What I'm trying to say is that I hate treadmills. They make me run weird.

Doing it again in seven months, but this time I'm gunning for the full marathon. Joined a gym and going back to old eating habits I had with I was training for the half-marathon in 2011.

      Let's do this!

Director left early with a stomach flu, so I directed my first hour and a half of a show today while technical directing. I felt like an octopus with not enough arms at my station. If it wasn't for the support of control room team I dunno what I would have done without them. After the first hour, I got the rhythm and managed to direct on the fly. It was fun.

The studio made me responsible to make sure the 24 hour loop goes up tonight over Christmas. I'm alone in the control room with a catering table of sweets. I'll post pics when I have the chance.

My parents' power went out during our freak ice storm and so they're staying at my parents place. Christmas has been moved to my sisters place on the 25th instead of the 24th at my parents. Toronto Hydro doesn't believe they will get power until next week.

Oh and update! My mechanic managed to find another engine for my car. Hopefully, I'll get my car back as early as this weekend. Woo!

    • RIP CAR

We had a good three years. I wish there could be more, but you burned a hole in my wallet in maintenance. Die! Die! Die!

Well, it turns out my car is dead entirely. The mechanics tried to bring it back to life by installing a new timing belt and replacing the water pump, but the problems were just too severe that it was meant to die yesterday. This is the second American brand car where the engine became irreparable.

As for my next car, I wish I could take my time to make and educated decision, but because I work 51KM (31miles) from work, I can't just not have a mode of transportation that can get me to work in just under 40 minutes. I always thought my next car after the Pontiac Wave (before I drove it into the ground in to the future) would be an electric car or at least a hybrid, but alas good luck is not one of those things on my side.

So far, I'm renting cars to make sure I make my shifts. It's not a huge hit in the wallet, but if it I keep on this route, it will be. I'm keeping it positive until then.

      Merry Christmas, indeed.

So it's been almost 5 months without a car journal in this space.

My Pontiac POS decided to crap out on me. Katie heard a noise asking what it was, I told her it`ll go away... Yeah it did and took the engine with it. When the engine died it made, and I shit you not, a noise similar to when a cartoon car breaks down. Ca-clunk, ca-clunk, pffftttt.

I`m physically tired, because Katie and I had to push our car off the road on an pretty steep incline and into a parking plaza to wait for the tow truck. Probably the most exercise I`ve done all month. The mechanic said it might be the serpentine timing belt, which is going to be a major pain in my wallet (we`re looking at around 600-700 minimum here). He also said he may have to check the waterpump, but I told him I haven`t had any troubles with overheating... yet. Oh, please don`t make me replace that too. Please don`t make me replace that too!

I just can`t sleep at the moment, because I gotta be fucking prepared for the weekend and Christmas week. Working double overtime. So I got my car rental set-up just in case, sometimes I just feel the need to be to be over prepared to feel a little better.

For once I would LOOOVE to have a year or two where I don`t complain about my car, believe me. Nothing pains me more than to see my hard earned money flushed away something that may not even survive by the time I pay off the damn thing in 2015. The only gold digging bitch I have in my life is my goddamn car.

Honestly, I hate this time of the year. Don't get me wrong, it's a great festive time of year with the joy and presents, but I find it's just an excuse to nibble at a cart-of-face-stuffn's for weeks on end. Working in a television retail network doesn't help trying to avoid the cart-of-face-stuffn's. The last couple of days have been, for a lack of a better word, gluttonous. OMG ALL THE FOOD! While the world of commercial television food has a bad rap about looks rather than taste, live-television food is actually edible and I can assure you very tasty.

A famous New York chef with his signature catch phrase that rhymes with "WHAM!" made a lot of signature Christmas dinner items over the weekend. One item that was unique and I've never had personally was his signature gumbo. I took two helpings home and extra cooked Christmas dinner items. In fact, I don't think I need to make dinner at home for the next couple of days as my fridge is bursting with live-tv take away.

      4b8713bf-04ae-4af0-b3c6-8b4a279cef14_zps
I'm not sure who duck is, but it's my gumbo now

Sweet confections are hard to miss, especially when television guests like to leave their work on our crew catering table
      IMG_00000500_edit_zps028da681.jpg
Seasalt chocolate covered pretzels, white chocolate covered pretzels with crushed candy cane bits, assorted chocolate truffles, and popcorn caramel squares

There's a lot more to mention and the temptations are high to just gorge oneself into a blubbery, squishy ball. But, I save you the trouble, because come January, marketing will convince viewers that while eating a lot during the season is a great excuse, keeping the habit in the new year is just shameful. And you must work, work, work it all off. Come on YOU CAN DO IT!

Other than that, how's your year been?

Me? Friggen awesome. It's great to be back.
