RTO starts today! Unfortunately, and it's hard to say that I will not be attending the first event as another event I work with is this weekend. (Insert super sad face)

      sad-face.png
Oh wow, there is such a thing.

For the last six months I've been helping out a local free annual Toronto Event (Muhtadi Drumming Festival) with website and social media duties. I will be working at the social media booth, listening to some rhythm and beats whilst drinking in the beer garden, and feasting on cultural delicacies.

I hope everyone attending RTO has fun and drink one for me. smiley12.gif

    • Experience to Exeprience

      Microbe

It's been a while since I've written anything substantial on my journal. The best I can come up with an excuse is that I was busy trying to get out of a spiral maze that I created and trying to figure out how to get out of it.
      retail8_zps769c67ce.jpg
For the last six months, I've had two part time jobs working in retail. One job was selling cable and wireless services for a major carrier here and the other job was at a big box store. I'm not getting more specific than that.

With my new found unemployment, I wanted to experiment and experience the other side of retail.

Throughout my high school and university career as a student, I've always been in the position of support.
      retail11_zpsd4bbf9c1.jpg
One summer before working in a customer service position, I got duped into selling knives to total strangers. You can imagine how that went...
      retail10_zps3d1cca77.jpg

Because I like talking to myself I said, "You know, Joey. Selling in a retail store should be no problem! It's not like you're selling knives to total strangers anymore. Customers are now coming to your house (store) instead!"

I wish that was the end and we could all live happily ever after, but it isn't.

At the big box store, I had to deal with hot air balloons.

      retail10_zps2183017e.jpg

I kid you not, it felt like as soon as you mention the word "warranty service' you could see their attitude change
      retail1_zps1f9f9aa0.jpg

And the very mention of how much the service is
      retail2_zps44330db6.jpg

      would make them pop
      retail3_zps7c9d3dcc.jpg

then customers try to ask you for a discount or bargain one out of you
      retail4_zps38450de4.jpg

I don't know you and you don't know me. If the first words that come out of your mouth is "discount" the line of me respecting you is crossed. What ever happened to building customer/sales relationships? Why can't we ease into this instead of blowing the load at the start on the off chance that I'll go "YUP! buying a microwave is a tough decision and you look like you need a discount!".

Believe it or not, big box retailers don't make their money selling the physical product. They make their money selling you warranty services and other non-tangible services that the average consumer doesn't need, but is convinced otherwise.

Within a month, I moved into the Technical Pro Shop (that's not the official name) fixing computers. I couldn't take it anymore with the hot air balloon customers. Plus, I was a shit sales person anyway. Working in the Pro Shop I could definitely flex my customer service skills. Or so I thought...

      To be continued...

Holy fuck! If there is anything I learned it's that in this condition you can never really trust a fart. yeah, I went there

      Enjoy your weekend everyone!

    • Battle: Flu

      Microbe

      flu.jpg
Came back from an eight hour shift yesterday and on my walk home I literally felt like a zombie. My muscles were aching to the point I was hunched over and moaning for the pain to stop! By the time I got home, Katie had made me dinner, but I wasn't hungry (brraaaaiiinns). My body did what it could only do, strip all of my clothes off leaving a trail to the warm comfort of our bed without eating dinner.

I succumbed to flu like symptoms: fever, headache, aching muscles, weakness, dehydration and lack of appetite, which is so unlike me, because I'm always hungry. I used a mix of generic ibuprofen and Buckley's cold, cough and flu to arm my immune system with their war against what was trying to harm me and their environment. The one thing my body wasn't doing was sweating.

I have to tell you when I was burning up and there's no sweating as a result, it scared me a bit. The body needs to sweat to cool down, basic body science, and I was burning up. I resorted to artificial methods through cool showers and cold water soaked towels. Nothing. I asked Katie if she could make me some soup. I would do it myself, but I was in no working state to be near a stove. My appetite was still non-existent, but I knew I needed to get some food in me somehow even if it was a liquid substitute that I don't consider food. I mean seriously, who eats soup as a meal? After eating the delicious chicken and bologna soup the sweating started as soon as I put my head down on the pillow. Success!

It's been 24 hours since the whole ordeal and I feel amazing! I just came back from a walk to induce more sweating, but not to worry I bundled up enough to make sure I was safe from the harsh cold Canadian weather this time of year. It's one thing to get really sick, but to beat it within 24 hours is another. Is there a life achievement I can collect?

I've been writing my next month's commentary on my site Technolog I.C.H. which will focus on the chronology of my experience with technology and some observations that I've realized were early training on my basic skill sets. I have a small section that briefly talks about the early PC games I used to play.

"Word Rescue, Math Rescue, Commander Keen, Hugo's House of Horrors, Wolfenstien 3D, Doom, Duke Nukem and Chess Master 3000"

Hugo's House of Horrors was the shit! I remember being frustrated with the game mechanics, but it was always satisfying when you would find the right combination of tasks. This game helped me prepare for games like The Secret of Monkey Island, Day of the Tentacle and SAM & MAX.

Are there any text / graphic adventures games you played as a child?

    • Bully

I just found the bully at my new job and worst of all he's in my department.

A fellow employee and I decided to check out our department and say "Hi" to the fellow team members. Two were busy with clients, one came back from lunch and one just stood in the aisle.

I just made a simple gesture to shake his hand and said, "Hey how's it going? I guess we're going to be working closely together next week."

Shakes my hand, "Oh... What do you want?"

"Just wanted to say HI and maybe say hi to the others in the department, but I see they're busy, so no worries"

      "okay, bye."

My training friend laughs and says "Haha! He's just pretending to be a hard ass customer"

I swear, the dude's brow furled when he heard that and looked as if he was going to shoot laser beams out of his eyes.

I looked at my friend, then looked at the department bully and said, "Well, we'll be on our way. Good meeting you."

Silence. Not a word from the guy.

We walked down the aisle and headed to the cheap merchandise section ($100 - $200 items) to do more scouting on the floor. My friend turns to me, "What's his deal?"

I said, "Don't worry, I've seen this before. In his eyes, we're competition that will take potential commissions away from his payroll. He's trying to psych us out with the attitude."

The bully comes around the corner and walks to the back room saying "You see this section? This will be your section all season."

My friend and I laughed and I said, "Yeah you wish. See you next week."

THIS is going to be FUN smiley0.gif

It's listed on the Via Rail site? Interesting... I always just checked the AmTrak's site... that's where I found out about. Just out of curiousity when are you planning on heading down? I am grabbing a 8 something train Thursday morning and basically spending the whole day traveling/finding the hotel when I get into town.

As far as a room we should have one from Thursday to Tuesday. I am heading back on Monday and Squall is heading back Sunday, but the other person we have so far is staying till Tuesday.

My plan right now is to Train down and fly back. I can't change the way back because I have already purchased the non-refundable ticket back. The am currently not 100% dedicated to taking the train down, but it will only cost me $100.

If you do decide to go to NYC in October let me know I have found a nice hotel that is within the NYC public transit system, but is a a bit away from everything (near the JFK airport). However, if I can find 4 people to fit in it we can do it for about $35 plus tax a night. It is an econo-lodge part of the same chain as Quality Inn, Comfort Inn, etc., so it may not be the Hilton but it would be clean.

see thats the cool thing about putting yourself out there by just asking. You dont need a seway. You dont have to ask a girl out in a cool smooth way. Sometimes doing that, you just come off pompous and big on yourself. And Im not saying that you would. You are the last person I would ever think would be pompous. Women realize that it takes alot for some people to put their self out there and ask for the first date. Just dont stutter, unless she thinks thats cute... then only do it if its real... dont wanna start a relationship on a lie now do you?:

honestly I would strongly advise against that. Even if you were used to biking short distances I would still say take it easy. Just like any form of exercise you can't rush into it right away and not expect to get hurt. You run the risk of hurting your leg muscles if you push too soon. I would say shoot for 3 out of 5 days. Use the days to let your body recover and make sure you are paying attention to warning signs. You don't want to wreck it by pulling a muscle.

I think it's awesome that you are doing it, it's saving you a ton of money and it's awesome exercise, but you need to treat it like any other new exercise routine. With moderation until your body gets stronger and more accustom and is able to handle more and more.
