Thanks to everyone that sent me birthday wishes! You are all lovely. I missed them all because my boyfriend took me off to Paris for the weekend. It's a lovely city but remarkably smelly for how clean the whole place was.

We went to the Louvre today and I realised that I am not an art person. Or, at least, not a painting person. We went straight to have a look at the Mona Lisa because that's what tourists do and apparently if you don't do it at the start of the day, you don't get near it at all. I glanced at it from the door and my rough reaction was " well, that's that. Let's go see something else."

We spent the next hour admiring rugs from Islamic empires.

    • Marathon-ing for charity (on skates!)

Tomorrow, my roller derby league are going down to the South Coast Roll at Goodwood motor racing track to skate a marathon to raise money for Catching Lives, a charity providing facilities for the homeless in our county. We've already raised almost £2,500 as a team, which I think is awesome.

I'm unfortunately not taking part due to knee problems, so I figured the least I could do is try and spread the word a bit more. I don't know most of you, and for a lot of you I know this won't even help people in your country, let alone your area. But Canterbury in particular has a really awful homelessness problem which is heartbreaking to see, and the charity we're raising money for provides so many services, like food and a place to shower, to help people get their lives back on track. So if you're feeling generous, have a look at our Just Giving page and donate even just a pound to any of our skaters.

In any case, it's looking to be a really nice and fun day, I'm super excited! It's even meant to be sunny in England for once ;)

    • THREE MORE DAYS

      MissFrances

I can't wait to be done with university. I'll be regretting this in about a week when I have nothing to do and have to get myself a job, but right now there's nothing I want more

Had my first exam yesterday, I was terrified. Who knows what happened in Maoist china? I don't think even people who lived through it understood it. Nothing really made any sense, the explanation for almost everything that happened was "Mao wanted it to happen, so it did". It wasn't actually that bad. Either way, I worked out I only needed 12% to pass that module, and while I want to do more than just pass, 12% is basically just turning up, so anything else was a bonus.

Next and last one is on Thursday and then I'm DONE FOREVER

In reality there's free food and wifi and I'm getting paid for it

      MissFrances

-After legitimately nine months of stress induced break downs, I wrote 11,000 words in approximately half a week and managed to submit my dissertation
-Only to be faced with two more essays because university sucks and is designed to completely destroy your soul
-I got an internship writing advice articles to help people on low incomes, benefits and pensions, which is awesome and also paid, which makes it even more awesome
-I'm going to a conference for said internship. It's on housing so it's probably not going to be thrilling, but there's refreshment breaks every hour and a half and I'm being paid for it so that's great
-I'm still roller derbying. Progress is being made. Passed most of my skills, still stuck on 20.5 laps. Mostly because my attempts are always thwarted - last time I collided mid-apex with one of the other girls, pushed her into a wall and stopped to check that she was alright. I reckon that means I can add at least two more laps on to what I got ;)
-My lungs are giving up on me.

After three weeks of doing nothing but eating and working, i managed to improve my laps in 5 minutes by almost two :)

Last time I got 19/5, this time 20.75/25. And I took a huge fall that made me roll half way across the hall

Saw you were posting about skates on the thread but I think I missed the conversation so I'm leaving it here.

You can use any skates on any hard surface. Obviously it's the wheels that can be critical to making it doable. Generally most generic out of the box skates can be used anywhere though you will find certain ones work better indoors or outdoors. You can get a good sense of this just by feeling the wheel. The softer/stickier it is the more suited to indoor use. It's not that it cannot be used outdoors but that rougher surfaces like concrete and asphalt wear them out very quickly. Harder wheels last longer outdoors but can be much more slippery on hard wood.

Essentially you could have any skate you wanted and then match any wheel you wanted to it :)

      • TacoPowerPhD

Skateboard wheels? I presume that would be because you have some spare? I don't think so. Unless the diameter of the axel holes match up along with the width. It would be worth checking though I guess.

Thank you! :D I might be going out to get a pair today, super excited :)

Yeah I'm excited and yes I'm landlocked. xD I think it's okay despite not having a beach close by. I try to go to a lake often but it's not quite the same as the ocean you know? I'd love to go back to the UK. Do you know or like Hetalia?

      • MissFrances Fences

Aww are you landlocked then? It sounds like a silly question but do you get to go to the seaside much? I don't know why that was my first question :p and oh sick! That's awesome, I'm super jealous. I'm going to London comic-con/MCM Expo for the second time this year but I'd love to go to RTX if flights and everything wouldn't cost half of everything I own smiley7.gif Bet you're excited for that!

Utah is awesome, well for me, it's what I'd like to call the half eaten waffle state. That sounds odd xD Utah is like the cornerstone for a couple of states. We're sandwiched. Idaho, Nevada, Arizona, Colorado and Montana border us. I'm thankful I'm so glad to Texas too because I'm going to RTX :) Sorry if I'm babbling or made no sense.

Aww that sounds lovely! Where was your favourite place? I've actually never been on a double decker either so I'd be super excited too :) I'd ask you about Utah(?) but I don't know anything about it! :)

I was there with a group exploring London and a few other countries. I saw the Parliament Building and went on the Eye of London. Being from a small town it was a lot to take in. It's childish but I was very thrilled when I got to ride on the double decked bus. Haha,

      • MissFrances Fences

Hey, how are you? What kind of games do you normally play?

      • dimeben

Sims games, aka "100 ways to kill off virtual people" haha! Yeah I love all the GTAs and LA Noire was really good! Can't wait to just finish all these olds games and get a large number of feels from the endings and loads of achievements haha!

      • MissFrances Fences

My laptop isn't faring much better, I get immense lag and I think it's because of all the Sims things I have on it :') also I'm so clumsy so the thing is battered on the outside too, all the corners of my screen frame are chipped off and everything. Poor laptop.

Super sad, it's horrific! I won't spoil it for you. But yesss I'm quite keen on Rockstar too. LA Noire was a top notch game.

      • dimeben

Unfortunately my laptop is almost due to visit the retirement home so I can't even play Minecraft on it! I know what you mean with Dishonored! I find that I'll just get more and more impatient and then fail even more :(

Oh no, is the ending sad? I love that game so much, literally any Rockstar game and I'm sorted.

      • MissFrances Fences

Ahh yeah, always t,e for minecraft! I've been doing more on laptop though than on the Xbox, I think only because there's more materials. I'm stuck on Dishonored because I keep getting caught, but its my own stubbornness because I don't want to attempt doing it a different way :')

I absolutely love RDR, that damn game made me sob like a baby.

      • dimeben

I'm good thanks as well! Nice :) I started Dishonored but never finished it. I have sooooo many games that I need to finish, Red Dead, Fallout: New Vegas, Dead Space 3 and loads more. And of course there's always time for Minecraft, it's basically doodling on your xbox

      • MissFrances Fences

Hey I'm good thanks! You? :) oh a bit of everything, I'm working my way through Dishonored, Hitman and Trials right now. As well as Halo. Got a lot on my list ;) what about you?

No snow in the last few weeks. Last time we had snow, I was walking home from the pub. The beer jacket felt like it was working, but my body seemed to disagree the following morning. I went to uni up north at Warwick (anywhere more than 5 minutes away from the English channel is northern by my standards. Except Cornwall, we do not speak of that place) so my facebook feed is full of reports of snow ruining everyone's lives, but I can't see any from here! It is still cold as dicks though. This time last year I was out in a kayak wearing a very loose pirate costume, now I think I'd freeze before I even get to the beach :(

      • MissFrances Fences

Gosh you're much further south than me, is it worse down there? Absolutely wonderful, but then at least we haven't had (much) snow so at least we have it better than a lot of northerners ;)
