    • I like making people happy

So I made this for my friend Dave:

      tumblr_mjh14yxlVc1qg3n7jo1_400.gif
      (I fixed the picture!)

Whose videos make me laugh lots and you should check them out and it's alright that I'm shamelessly plugging because I'm doing good things for other people

Anyway despite the fact that its not amazing and I'm doubting my choice of font and the "transparency" is doing a variety of mysterious thing he's really happy about it and I feel good about myself for doing something nice for other people as well as proud of this thing of dubious quality which I created.
I might do it more even if I'm not great at these artsy kinds of things.

Good night everyone, I'm off to bed feeling like a good person!

If you've got anything you want me to do something artsy for give me a shout and perhaps I'll oblige ;)

So I suppose you can have this one of my beautiful, wondrous handwriting.

That, my dears, is part of my dissertation outline, which I finally handed in today three days late, after two rejected proposals and a whole heap of panicking over what I was going to do.In the end, it was quite simple - I suppose I just found the right advisor to talk to because our conversation basically went like this:

Me: Hey, I emailed you yesterday, I think I want to do my dissertation on this

Him: Yeah. Sounds good. Let me sign that form for you.

So, success! Honestly, I felt like it'd never get done. With that and my essay handed in I'm feeling a bit more relaxed and hopefully I'll have more time to do some things I enjoy, like games! I've got one more thing due in before Easter, but that shouldn't be too much trouble. I'm also planning to go see the boyfriend in Brighton when I'm done, which is super exciting, Brighton's such a lovely place.

In other news, I've been thinking about my future, because I'm firmly half way, if not further through university and sooner or later I'm going to have to think about all that stuff, or I'll leave completely unprepared. I don't know if you guys have noticed this out yet, but I don't tend to make decisions that make much sense - The reason I had two rejected dissertation ideas before I settled on the one I submitted today was because I decided I was now interested in something I'd never studied before and wanted to spend my next year focusing on that. But apparently that's "impractical" or something, I dunno.
So, half way through university, I've decided to try and get into publishing.
I decided this the morning I woke up and decided to apply for a Children's Editorial Internship at Penguin, which I do not think was successful because I haven't heard from them after two or three weeks, but in my defence, I didn't fancy my chances much anyway. I reckon I put up a good fight, though - I wrote a very convincing piece about why I thought Moshi Monsters was an exciting children's brand of 2012, and I think I should get extra brownie points for knowing what that is without having to research it. These are the perks of having young nieces and nephews, I suppose.
Either way, I've set my mind on this now, so if any of you wonderful amazing people know any kind of thing that might help me, like sites I could try to write for, any events, or anything, your help would be greatly appreciated. I'm already planning on going to a Society of Young Publishers event in the near future, so that's a start.

And I really have nothing else to say, so here's a picture of my cat, because he has a fantastic moustache

    • Absence

      MissFrances

I've been working in retail over Christmas and I haven't had time for forums, games or anything ive ever found remotely enjoyable in life.
Seriously though, despite the fact that all my spare time divided itself into either "sleep" or "work", being absolutely run off my feet and facing some of the dumbest customers I've ever met, I loved it. It was nice to be busy for once, and the people I met were awesome. Plus, I got to talk about games and films! Couldn't really get much better of a holiday job at this stage.
But now I'm done so I've only got boring old essays to do and hopefully I'll be around a bit more often!

    • My super awesome week

      MissFrances

I really don't have the time to be writing a journal entry because I have a whole essay to research and write by Wednesday but well here I am anyway!
Last week I had a pretty awesome week, mainly because it was my birthday!! And I'm a person that gets super excited about birthdays. I've been out for two meals, had a home-made birthday Mexican, (unsuccessfully) attempted to go out on Thursday and Friday, we went to a roller disco.
I am surprisingly alright at rollerskating. Surprisingly, because I am quite possibly the most unbalanced person alive. I frequently fall over standing completely still. And I still fell over on rollerskates, approximately six or seven times. One of these times, I had a drink in my hand, fell flat on my back and spilt it all down me. Still, I was able to move and stay upright the majority of the time, and I got some speed up too!
I got a lot of nail varnish and some flowers from my boyfriend (who has got me some better presents, but he's currently three hours away so I'll get them when we're both home), and I was pretty pleased with this.
The best thing for me, however, is that I also got a christmas job working at HMV! I've been trying to get a job in my area since I was 16, but living in a place where our only real retail is Bluewater and everything else is industry or fruit/veg businesses, it's been nearly impossible. I'm super excited about starting next week, even though I know it's going to be stressful! I've wanted to work in that place (or Game) for years!
As for the rest of this week, last night I wrote two separate essays and I have another due for Wednesday, so it's been stressful so far. At least they're quite interesting (The first was about execution rituals and the one I'm on now is on the development of secret security services) and by Wednesday I'll be free to do whatever I want.
Regular game blogging will return next week when I'm at home and have time to play about on the xbox!

    • Minecraft Adventures - Lighthouse!

A few days ago I was watching the hankgames Nerdcrafteria videos and I thought the idea of building a lighthouse was really cool, so I decided to try it out!
      tumblr_megrzvsbOR1qgmrgvo1_r1_500.jpg
Made out of iron, wool and obsidian, and the light's netherrack (left over from my nephew's house's roof), I tried lava but it wasn't really bright enough. There's also a bed in the base and stairs all the way to the little observation deck! I don't even want to think about the amount of times I knocked this down and started again because it didn't look right or it wasn't big enough - the first one I built was more like a candy-striped square, I had to build it out two squares to make it a circle, and then another because it wasn't centre. so that's 3 rebuilds off the top of my head - but I think it turned out alright in the end :)
I also realised I'd put it fairly close to the boat I built yesterday so I took some "artsy" pictures showing that off too.

I went to MCM Expo this year and I absolutely loved it. I've wanted to go to Comic Con for a few years now but I've never really known when it is or been able to find anyone to come with me, but this year I started a campaign to force someone to come.
It didn't work, mainly because my friends are spread out all over the country. I ended up going with my mum (who came simply because she wanted to see Halo 4) and in honesty I'm just happy I went.
I made her wait with me for like 45 minutes to see the Rooster Teeth guys. Definitely worth it. I don't know if I've mentioned it yet, but I'm a super nervous person, so when I actually came face to face with these guys I actually lost my words completely and ended up buying a tshirt just to have something to say
Gavin's a very nice guy though, I just wish I had something to say to him!
      Anyway, I bought this t-shirt
      tumblr_mcm1f3Bud81qgmrgvo1_1280.jpg
As well as this one from the folks at insertcoin
      tumblr_mcm1xavDCp1qgmrgvo1_500.jpg
And I generally had an amazing day! The cosplays were absolutely fantastic, we got a lot of pictures of the Assassin Creed ones in particular (there was one Connor who looked really amazing), and getting a look at the games was really worth the queues.
Also shout out to the couple in the queue behind me dressed as Ezio (I think? Poor memory) and Edward Scissorhands. You guys were fantastic

    • Minecraft Adventures - Building a boat!

      MissFrances

I'll start this out by stressing one thing - I am not good at Minecraft. This comes from being someone with a) little creativity and b) a pretty short attention span. I generally get as far as making a block house, then I get bored and fed up with how stupid it looks, and then I give up all together.

First I'd like to apologise for the quality of these pictures. I wish I had a better way of getting images but my funds are lacking and my actual skill at playing any games is far too low to warrant forking out any money, so I make do with my camera phone

So a few weeks ago, my (8y/o) niece and I decided to make a village for our family using our excellent building skills, and we ended up with this interesting looking place -
      tumblr_me1sp07khF1qgmrgvo1_1280.jpg
(houses definitely are not our strong point)
And since then I've been slowly adding to it - mainly a set of railroads going to nowhere in particular so the kids could play with it and built it up while I'm at uni, even though they seem to be more interested in domesticating wolves and putting pictures in strange places, but what more can you expect from eight year olds.

Today, I build a boat. And I'm quite proud of myself, because I'm the kind of person that had issues building cars out of lego blocks when I was younger, so I consider this a real achievement

      tumblr_meeqx77UJG1qgmrgvo3_1280.jpg
Also there's a massive floating arrow in the background because I made the shooting gallery from Things to Do In... for my niece and I didn't want her to forget where it was.
