A tale is told of two computer scientists back in the 1970s, discussing the new microprocessors. "They're going to be cheap! A dollar each!" One of them explained. "But who needs computers that cheap? What are they going to do, use them as doorknobs?" Asked his friend. Ten years later, the computer scientist was checking into a hotel room and suddenly looked at the card-key in his hand and realized, yes, there was a computer in every doorknob.

If I could be a real dick and ask for a quick read and comment on the journal of this week's chapter in particular...this one is one of my favourites, an attempt to get back the old light-fun-slash-deadly-tension of the oldest days, and I want to know how well it worked.

Credit me with a comment when yer done. In the journal. I like re-reading them weeks later.

I meant the fact that you're not there sucks. I don't know when you might find it agreeable to come back. Mangetsu's still there. DoNothing's never gonna change, although he's my pal and we get along well enough. A couple of guys keep coming back to troll the place several times a week at the moment, I don't even know why any more. I know what you mean, how it's not as much fun, but...I dunno. Your call, dude.

I just thought it was overwhelmingly meh. There were things that I really liked, but too much of it just wasn't that great. I couldn't care about anyone in the movie, and I was also left confused regarding the climax. Too much that simply wasn't explained or even hinted at.

Yes, I apparently neglected to use my camera at all in Florida and New York. Meanwhile, there's a bunch of footage of giant eyeballs, animatronic dinosaurs, and other things from Chicago that are of no interest to anyone. My video taping priorities apparently leave something to be desired.

      Briana- Leader.
      Nevada- Tech.
      January- Bruiser.
      Jimmie- Spy/Recon.

I don't know, we aren't allowed to give out condoms any more.

See, Dragonskin is a camp where there is often sex. A few years back the O18s would hand out U18s condoms in the interest of, if they're gonna do it, make sure they do it safe. Some parents took offense to this and claimed we were encouraging them to have sex. As a result, now all we can do is hope to hell they bring their own. The first year we weren't allowed to hand them out there was a mysteriously larger number of unplanned pregancies in the months following.

It's not a bad chapter. I didn't like it all that well, it's scattershot, but the dialogue is fun. I like it when Raheem kills weird people.

    • Foolsfolly

      And there's:

“Even a turnip knows it’s a turnip. You have no idea that you never existed.” The Shambles Man tilted his head to his right. His bloodshot right eye rolled around and focused on Raheem. He was unafraid.

“Let’s see if this bullet’s real,” Raheem said.
“Yeah,” Raheem coughed, “come over here. I’ll pull your fucking teeth out and make a necklace.”
“Who the hell are you?” Raheem asked.

      “Karl Garan.”

“Good,” Raheem nodded. “Then I’ll get paid to kill your ass.”
“I remember this now!” Sergio laughed. “Garan had killed an officer, took his gun, and had a hostage! You shot the---”

Raheem stared at Sergio. “I’m sorry, I won’t interrupt you again.”
Raheem turned to face the officer. “I’m Raheem Savage, bounty hunter! And he,” Raheem reached for a grenade and chunked it at Garan. Garan instinctively caught the grenade just as he had with the pistol. Before he could realize what he’d caught the grenade went off.

      “Was Karl Garan.”
Sergio closed his mouth and nodded. “You win.”

      “Always do.”

Seriously, it's a good chapter for quotes.

I'm rereading the chapter and I've changed my mind it's:

“Why don’t I ever meet normal people!” Raheem shouted at the man.

“Nothing is real,” the Shambles Man said with subtle intimacy. “Everything you’ve ever known is a lie and you blindly accept that lie.”

“Yeah?” Raheem pulled out his pistol and pointed it at the Shamble Man’s head. “Well, I already heard that one.”

      That's just fun.

Foundingsday has my new favorite line. Can you guess?

      Hmm....lemme open it up.

      I'm going to say:

“My greatness is wasted on those with such narrow minds. Speak to my receptionist and fade serenely out of memory, thank you.”

      That's my favorite.

Spent a lot of time working on this post and damnit, someone who gets the reference should read it.

Fuck it, I'll also post it here. It's from a thread called "your epilogue (Dragon Age II)" so here:

Well, Hawke ran back to the mansion and found it nearly empty, Bohdan and Sandal had left. He stood there for moment in solemn quietness until the urge to run overtook him.

He grabbed the last of his things and turned to leave when Orana walked up to him. She told him that there was a letter waiting for him. Hawke hastily stuffed the letter into his backpack and gave Orana twenty sovereigns.

"No one will be looking for you," he said. "Go live your life."

And then Hawke ran, the Templars close on his heels.

When he finally made camp hours later somewhere high on Mount Sundermont he remembered the letter. He reached into the pack and pulled it out, it smelled of something oddly familiar.

The letter was yellow and cracked and the ink had faded. He looked at the return address and felt the weight of the past crush on him. It was from Ostagar.

      Dear Hawke,

First let me assure you, I did not die as you had seen. The darkspawn Hurlock's axe hit my head with a pure lyrium-inflused axehead. The impact caused a massive rip in the Veil and sent me back to 1.50 Divine.

I set myself up as a blacksmith as a front while I attempted to find my way back home. Unfortuantly, this proved impossible since the nearest piece of pure lyrium is down in the Deep Roads surrounded by the hoardes of darkspawn and will not be clear until the next Blight. However, I've become quiet adept at shoeing horses and fixing wagons.

Do not, I repeat, do not attempt to come back here to get me. I am perfectly happy living in the fresh air and wide-open spaces, and I fear unnecessary rips into the Veil will have unforseen consquences for all of Thedas. This is my wish, please respect it.

And so Hawke, I now say farewell and wish you Makerspeed. You've been a good, kind, and loyal friend to me. You've made a real difference in my life. I will always treasure our relationship and think on you with fond memories, warm feelings, and a special place in my heart.

      Your friend in time,

      Duncan.

Hawke stood and jumped around excitedly. "Duncan's alive! He's stuck in the Divine Age but he's alive!"

Come on, I thought it was hilarious.

Oh yeah. BioWare ALWAYS starts the game with at least one character on your team that dies.

      Always.

      KoToR- Trask Ugo.
      Jade Empire- Zu.
      Mass Effect- Jenkins.
Dragon Age- About a dozen or more depending on which of the origins you pick.
Mass Effect 2- That Cerberus guy...can't remember his name.
Dragon Age 2-....well, the tradition continues but since the game just came out today it'll be in bad tastes to tell.
