    • Hello?

      Navillus

Even after all these years, I still show my support to RD by continuing to be a sponsor. I'mean rarely here, but still enjoy their content. So, when it comes time to update my payment info, it'seems probably a good time to come around and see what I'mean actually paying for :)

It's 2015. That means my son has turned 9, and I'must about to turn 39. This are both scary numbers. Just this Summer, my family got a whole lot bigger - but not in the way you'd think. After being adopted as an infant, I just met my biological mother and my two half-sisters. Craziness. Very overwhelming, but very awesome.

Not much else to talk about, tho. Life is good. Hope yours is, too!

    • I've been here how long?

Here's a good way to see how long I've been on this site... In my Images, there's a picture of my son that I posted here when he was born.

He'll be turning 7 in two months.

      Holy Crap. smiley7.gif

    • Here's to 2013!

      Navillus

Wow. It's been ages since I posted anything here... I've been lurking, but it's been so busy lately, that I never seem to get back here as often as I'd like.

The last couple months of 2012 were hectic to say the least. My position was officially eliminated on Dec 31, and I started my new job on Jan 3rd. Despite all the crap that went on, I was still lucky enough to find a job, and even stay within my Unit. Others weren't so lucky. One colleague retired, another two were forced to leave the branch all together, and another lost her job completely and is still looking for work. Some days, working for the Government is great, other days it really sucks.

Anyway, the new position's going pretty well. It's actually the same type of work that I'd been doing for the last 10 years, but just a different subject matter. So, there's been a lot of learning in the last couple of months, but my experience has made it a lot easier to get a hang of than it would be if I were totally new. That helps a lot. In fact, there are people here coming to me for help with stuff, and they've been doing this for years.

And as if work wasn't stressing me out enough, my mother was diagnosed with breast cancer. Luckily, at age 73, they actually found it really early. It was a pretty small tumour, and after a couple of quick surgeries, and a few weeks of radiation, she seems to be showing no ill effects. Fingers are crossed that she's out of the woods.

So, 2012 sucked so bad, I needed to do something fun in 2013... something where I could just let loose and have fun. Oh, and I figured I'd have to include my family, too. So, what could be better than going to the Happiest Place on Earth? It was a quick trip (just 5 nights), and was even delayed by two days thanks to the freaking blizzard that buried the East Coast in early February, but we still had an amazing time at Walt Disney World. I'd been there a couple of times as a kid, but my wife and son had never been. So, it was just what the doctor ordered. We had an amazing time, and can't wait to get back.!! (While I've already bored folks on Facebook with a bunch of pictures (combined, I think we took around 1000), I'll still post some here, too!)

With a decent start to 2013, I've got high hopes for this year. Maybe I should buy some lottery tickets? :)

    • Balanced Budgets Suck pt. 2

      Ugh, I hate those jerks.

Headquarters wanted to put a rush on this whole Centralization thing, so the process started must quicker than any of us expected. They're centralizing one Region of the country at a time, and started in September. We're slated to go November 1st. Boo.

Thankfully, there's a pretty decent back-log of work (remember, I DO work for the Government, after all!), and we've been given a couple of extra months to finish up what work is still remaining in the office. Not bad. Could have been worse. Could have been better, though. Ottawa's doing a terrible job at handling this transition so far. They're pretty focused on setting up their new office, but not giving us any real information on how we're supposed to handle things on our end, let alone what our future might hold. I'm one of the lucky ones, and have been told by management that they're going to find a job for me. I'll believe that when I sign the job offer. Still, there are colleagues of mine across the country who have no idea what's going to come for them. Needless to say, the tension level is pretty high.

So, while it looks like I'll continue to be employed, it doesn't change the fact that my job - the job I've had for over 10 years and absolutely love - is being terminated on December 31st. This will also be the first time in 15 years that I haven't been working in the Dental field in some capacity. That's going to be really strange.

On the other hand, maybe my family will stop bugging me for free Dental advice? smiley0.gif

Prime Minister Harper can kiss my ass.

Thanks to big cuts in the last Federal Budget, all departments in the Canadian Government were instructed to slash expenditures by cutting programs, and streamlining administration... And by streamlining, I mean cutting 19,200 public service positions. Being a public servant, that made me very nervous. Last week, we had a video conference with the Deputy Minister in charge of our department... They said that we were looking at about an 8.9% reduction in full-time positions. However, they also said that front-line services, the ones dealing directly with the public, would not be affected, and there will be no impact on our clients.

Turns out, that's very clever word play right there...

No, the clients shouldn't be impacted in any way... but cutting my position and taking everything we do Regionally and centralizing it in Ottawa does have a little of an effect on the ones providing the services. Namely, Me.

I'm told that it will take at least a year to get everything transferred over to Headquarters, and until then I still have a job. I am an Indeterminate (permanent) employee, and they will have to try to find me suitable work within the public service... but there are still no guarantees.

Ironically, Sunday will be my 10th Anniversary at Health Canada, in this exact position... A job I've put a lot into over those 10 years... A job that, despite the stress, I really do love.

      Wish me luck, Kids!

Oh, and if anyone happens to come across Stephen Harper on the street, give him a good kick in the balls for me, will ya?

My wife managed to snag a pre-paid gas card from the back of a cereal box... Yeah, I thought that was weird, too. Anyway, the card was only worth $5, and we had until the end of March to use it. So, last night we stopped at the gas station on the way home.

I ran up $5 on the pump and got... 3.5L. Wait, what? Three and a half Litres. For FIVE DOLLARS. Wow. To be honest, I haven't been driving our car much, as I've been riding the bus to work, and my wife takes the car every day. Gas just went up to $1.43/L last week. For you non-Canucks out there, that's about $5.40/Gal.

      Holy...

Apparently, $1.50/L prices are expected by this Summer. Looks like Summer Vacation will be close to home this year! VERY close! smiley4.gif

It was oddly emotional to finally wrap things up. We managed to see a 2d show as well. It would have been too distracting in 3D... I didn't care about 3D for Transformers, since I wasn't there for the plot. I was there for the Boom

Well, it's been 10 years emphasized by seeing the actors/actresses age over the years as well.

I'm still boycotting 3D as long as I can... That being said, I'm probably going to shell out to see Kung-Fu Panda and Cars in 3D, for my son

We caught Thor (2D!) on the weekend, and liked it. Afterwards, I went though the Coming Soon list and found that there's a movie coming out that I want to see pretty much every week for the next 3 months. Here's hoping we have lots of babysitters!!

ya know what? I had no idea you had to pay extra for 3D. Since I've got one here, the only 3D movies I've seen since the latest fad started were at the IMAX - where I expect to pay more anyway. Hrm... I dunno if I'd be willing to cough up $13 for a little screen when I can pay $15.50 and see it on a screen 6 stories high. We get out so rarely these days, we prefer to go in style.

BTW: Tron Legacy on IMAX 3D was amazing.

As I recall, the IMAX glasses also fit better over my regular glasses.

I looked for those girls you see in the post cards and advertisements and they didn't seem to be there.

But, I also didn't take random pictures of girls I didn't know.
Some of them were accompanied by big boy friends.

What ending did you get? I heard that there was at least 2 different ones....

I got the one where Sophia Lamb drowns or whatever, and me and Eleanor and all the Little Sisters go up to the surface, and Eleanor gives this speech, then I die, and she drains my blood, or takes my ADAM...and, yeah, lol

The Audio Logs are a pain. I'm looking around for a good walk through to help me get through that.

Interestingly enough, she actually had a craft business for a few years; she sold custom towels for kids, with hoods and patterns. (So one might be a duck, and the terrycloth materials were sewn together to look like a duck from the back; the hood had eyes, at least.) She had a dozen or so styles, and she couldn't make 'em fast enough.

The company was called 'Katie's Grandma'. smiley0.gif (This was when she had one grandchild; she moved on from there pretty soon after she had more than one, and is now busy with other stuff. She has 8 grandchildren at this stage.)

Ubuntu is one of the most straight-forward, user-friendly Linux variations I've come across. It runs fairly efficiently. It works well on a lot of hardware without any tweaking. It comes with Firefox and decent versions of various media players so you can do just about all of your interwebs stuff. Installing software is pretty easy in most cases. You can download an ISO of the installer disc, burn it, and boot off it and just sample it a bit before trying to install it. I'd recommend at least taking a look.
