    • So much stuff, so little money...

      OboeCrazy Freelancer

Between my lack of gigs or job, and the ramp up to RTX and D&D stuff, I am somehow managing to feel crazy busy, poor, panicked, and really excited all at the same time.

      - We are ONE WEEK AWAY from the Sidequest Charity Gala at RTX, where Dungeons & Dragons & Drunks will be auctioning off an excellent D&D themed prize pack. When you buy your Sidequest tickets don't forget to use the code SQENABLERS to get 20% off the ticket price!

      - We are ONE WEEK AND A DAY away from the D&D&D live panel at RTX! Friday July 7th from 4-6pm Central in the Hilton Governor's Ballroom! Come see us play D&D live for your entertainment, give away TONS of prizes, raise money for charity, and just have a fantastic time! I know there is a lot of other amazing events and panels at the same time, but we're proud to be a community run community driven event filled with community members! Please come support us?

      - Jalapeno popcorn. RIGHT?!

      - There's still time to get the RT special if you want to order a Musical Cryptogram and get any text turned into custom music! Just today I took some time to turn my lovely husband's name into music. Then went insane and composed a tiny fugue around that melody. Because, as I said, I don't have any gigs right now so I need to keep myself busy. Hire me please?

Tell me your favorite BBQ place in Austin. I love Ironworks but we'd love to go other places. <3

    • Opening Up Commissions!

      OboeCrazy Freelancer

You usually hear about visual artists opening up commissions, but sometimes you can commission a musician as well! Most of what I'm contracted to play are larger events, like orchestra gigs.  Every so often I'm hired to record things, like music for popular web series or solo parts for a new concerto.  I've had to get a bit creative to be able to offer something anyone might want and could easily afford. But the summer is a dead time for gigs, and I am poor.  So I've taken an idea that I've used to make presents for friends and family and opened it up to everyone!

      Custom Musical Cryptograms!

Would you like to have an original musical composition based on your name or a phrase performed by a professional classical oboist? I can turn any text into custom music, play and record it on oboe or English horn, and send you a high quality mp3 or wav that you can enjoy. Use it as a unique ringtone, theme music for your YouTube channel, or a special gift for the person who has everything!

Say you're playing in a D&D game and your Dungeon Master calls. You want to know it's her, so you commission me to turn the title "Dungeon Master" into music and use it as your ringtone.

I use the same method JS Bach used to turn his name into music, and can make alterations depending on if you'd like something that sounds more happy or sad. I can even vary the tempo to be as fast or slow as you want!

My current rate is $10 for around 10 seconds of music, with discounts for multiple orders. You can choose a high quality mp3 or wave file, and if you want I'll even send you a scan of the sheet music I created so you can see the actual notes! I'm even running an RTX special...order before the end of June and I guarantee your order within 24 hours of receiving payment!

You can PM me here, or send me an email at INFO AT OBOECRAZY DOT COM to get more information and get yourself something unique!

    • D&D&D at RTX: Past & Future

      OboeCrazy Freelancer

Oh what a long strange trip its been.

In 2013 I had an idea: I wanted to play a game of Dungeons & Dragons with my friends at RTX.  In those days the convention was still light on evening activities besides pub crawls. This was a chance to hang out, play a fun one shot, be entertainment for those that just wanted to watch, and share a hobby that had become a big part of my life with some of my favorite people.  When enough people showed interest in the evening we put together a little prize package for the Sidequest charity auction to sweeten the deal...the winner of the auction would come "be the bad guy" and help me in the final boss fight.  So one night a couple dozen of us took over an upstairs corner of the Radisson hotel and over the next few hours played a hysterical game of D&D! People arrived to watch for a while, bringing us food and drinks, and our charity winner rolled a Natural 20 on his very first ever d20 roll! It was casual and fun, and we all agreed we should do it again next year!

In 2014 with a bit more planning and interest we reserved a back room at Fado, a fantastic Irish pub nearby.  A slightly larger audience enjoyed a comfortable space and good food while I lead our party on an RvB themed adventure that to this day has one of the best surprise endings I never would have predicted. We managed to record it on video for fun, the charity winners got outstanding prizes and had a blast, and this D&D at RTX thing was cemented as a yearly event.

In 2015 we were accepted as an official panel at the convention! This meant a dedicated space with audio and video, and a comfortable place for the audience to watch.  It was a small room with only an hour of time, but the RT fans packed the room to overflowing with an amazing audience who filled that small space with so much love and enthusiasm that it was hard to do anything but grin from ear to ear the whole game!  As an official panel we received a lot more attention so our Sidequest Charity auction raised a LOT more money then ever before. It was a great success! Once the game was over everyone who'd participated were constantly approached the rest of the con asking if we were going to continue playing D&D and put it out for people to watch.

I liked the idea. The players liked the idea. Thus Dungeons & Dragons & Drunks was officially born.

Last year, 2016, D&D&D opened in a bigger room, with a huge wonderful passionate audience, a full 2 hours to play, and managed to record the audio to release on the podcast. We raised more money then ever for charity, gave away tons of free swag, played an amazing game, and had a fantastic time!  Once again RT fans proved to be the best audience, laughing and cheering and shouting out jokes and filled with quiet tension when dice were rolled...I could not have been more blessed, or proud, or grateful, at how much joy that game brought everyone.  Not only does that event remain one of my favorite D&D moments, and one of my favorite RTX moments, it is still one of my favorite memories ever. Of all time.

So here we are, 2017 RTX is weeks away, and we're back with another live D&D game for charity! Our panel is official (Friday July 7th from 4-6pm in the Hilton Governor's Ballroom), the prize pack for the Sidequest Charity Auction is ready to go, and the game is a few tweeks away from being ready.  Everyone who has participated in our games the last few years is in some way responsible for it's continued success...all of our players, the amazing audience who cheered us on, Sidequest and the winners of the charity drives, the Guardians who dealt with our strange "panel"...

...and yet I can't help but be more nervous about this game then any of the others.  A big reason is that we'll be down one player; the wonderful Jack "Jengaship" "Travancore" cannot come to RTX this year for very wonderful happy reasons.  And there is the pressure to make this all work, to create something entertaining, something bigger and better then the last year, something that everyone can walk away from with a smile and say that they had a fantastic time!

Who knows exactly know what will happen?  D&D is improv collaborative storytelling.  I will come with a one shot adventure that I hope my players will enjoy playing, that I hope the audience will find entertaining, and when my players and the audience change the story in weird and wonderful ways I can only hope I can keep up and keep it fun and funny.

We've all done this before, I know the players are hysterically funny and quick on their feet, and our audience is brilliant and passionate and knows how to have fun.  I just need to get you all in the same room, and joy will happen.

      ...will you be there?  <3

The STREAM OF ANNIHILATION IS OVER!

      Wow was that fun!

Wait, fun is not a strong enough word. Amazing. Incredible. Insanely outstanding. Awesome, in the truest sense of the word.

Getting a chance to just hang out all day with other DMs who do games that get posted on the internet, to chat about our triumphs and struggles, to just be huge geeks about this passion we love, and to always have someone from Wizards of the Coast just hanging out with us was joyful.  Like the best convention, except all the panels are D&D.  I got to tell TONS of people all about running live games for charity at RTX, and the community here, and the podcast, and hear about their own games and charity and community.  Many of these people and groups I was very familiar with, some I was not, all of them were fantastic people who were just a pleasure to hang out with!

Thank you to everyone who came out live to watch, and especially those who shouted about me in the chat! Dungeons & Dragons & Drunks has a smaller following then a lot of the big names on that stage, and getting some love made me super happy.  And if you are NOT familiar with D&D&D our latest podcast just went up today....Episode 72: Math And Miles! Give it a download on your preferred podcast device!

But back to the SoA. Not only did I get to have a blast, but I nabbed a TON of swag that the D&D&D crew will be giving away on our podcast as well as at RTX as part of the Charity Auction.  And I got to play in two fantastic games!  If you go to the D&D Twitch stream not only can you watch both days in total, but you can see all the individual segments.  The two games I was lucky enough to participate in are:

SoA One Grung Above: Chris Lindsay, D&D Product Manager, Adventurers League Guru and architect of the Dungeon Masters Guild, runs an adventure for group of other Dungeon Masters!  Playing with nothing but other long time DMs is a unique experience....also crazy fun! Add to that the fact that all the characters are Grung (frog people) and it's probably one of my favorite D&D experiences EVER.

SoA Maze Arcana w/ Special Guests: Maze Arcana is an established D&D streaming team who put on two games over the weekend, and I was one of the guests invited to play in the Saturday game! Two words: zombie T-Rex.

Those are my two games, but honestly ANY of the content from that weekend is excellent.  It's hours of D&D games, some of them the first part of a multi-part series that will continue on the Wizard D&D twitch stream! So go enjoy, let me know what you think and if you enjoyed it, and if you're at RTX come say hi.  Maybe I'll have some D&D swag to give away.

    • The Stream Of Annihilation is NIGH!

      OboeCrazy Freelancer

Tomorrow, the Stream of Annihilation begins! Two days of Wizards of the Coast livestreaming D&D games, talking about new storylines and products, and generally having a ton of fun.  As I've mentioned I'm fortunate enough to have been invited to join, thanks in no small measure to the community here supporting my DMing on Dungeons & Dragons & Drunks!

Wizards just posted the schedule, and I highly encourage everyone to watch as much as possible!  It's 10am-10pm Pacific time Friday and Saturday the 2nd and 3rd, and I am sure you will find all of the groups playing entertaining and all the announcements exciting!  It's all on twitch.tv/DnD and the streams will be archived for later viewing.

I'm going to be on two different games, and I would be filled with gratitude and joy if you could join the Twitch stream and watch live while I'm roleplaying my little heart out.  Friday June 2nd I'm playing at 4:30pm Pacific, and Saturday June 3rd I'm playing at 6:30pm Pacific (with the chance that times are subject to change, of course!).  Both games should be about an hour and a half, and I will be joining some really talented, funny, inspiring D&D people.  Watch some fun and join in the chat. My parents should be watching so you can say hi! ;)

I'll be Tweeting a bunch about the whole event this weekend, and if you have any questions or want to see something shoot me a message there as that's the quickest and best way to contact me.  I'm @OboeCrazy on Twitter....because BRANDING!

Thanks again for all of your support! I'm gonna go make the RT community proud!

Next week a whole bunch of talented Dungeons & Dragons DMs, players, and streamers will converge on Wizards of the Coast for 2 days of livestreaming D&D games and talking about the new storylines. I'm super excited to announce that I'm going to be joining them! Wizards are paying for me to be there, participate in all of the exciting new announcements, and just in general have a huge amount of fun.

If you get a chance please tune into the livestream June 2&3 at twitch.tv/DnD to see all the wonderful games, hear the announcements, and see me play with some absolutely astounding D&D fans!

This is in large part due to Dungeons & Dragons & Drunks.  So thank you to @Road_Block @Jengaship @john and @Juls for playing with me, thank you to Rooster Teeth for providing an amazing community to support the game, thank you to Sidequest for a helping us raise money year after year for charity, and thanks to @lukemckay for dealing with a crazy oboe DM.

Sometime in the early 2000s I was heavy into tape trading for Mystery Science Theatre 3000 episodes.  Yes, I was one of those people who "kept circulating the tapes".  The internet was still pretty young, and online video wasn't easy or normal.  But you COULD use the internet to put up lists of episodes you had on video, and find others who had episodes you were missing, and email each other about trading copies of those tapes.

While browsing websites for information on MST3K and tapes to share, I found a bunch of people raving about some fan made episodes that were outstanding.  Mystery Fandom Theatre 3000 (and holy cow that website still works!) was a hard core group of fans who decided to take their love of the show to the logical ultimate conclusion: make their own episodes! And by all account they had done a fantastic job.

This wasn't exactly tape trading, but I was intrigued, and I think they were just asking $20 for tapes and the shipping to cover the costs.  So I mailed them a check (because that's what you did back then before PayPal) and a few weeks later three VHS tapes showed up at my apartment.  To my delight the reviews were spot on...these were fantastic! The writing was very good, the production was remarkably high quality, and the riffs were hysterical.

Of the three episodes I received the third one stood out as the best.  Partially because I think the whole production came together after a few episodes of experience, and partially because the movie was Starcrash: a 1978 scifi Star Wars ripoff with David Hasselhoff, Christopher Plummer, and some of the most hilariously bad...everything.  Absolutely everything.  It's just a ridiculous movie, and the riffs made it even better.  I showed that tape to anyone I could get to sit down and watch it, especially if they were a MST3K fan.  Years after I finally ditched my tape collection I found the creators had uploaded the episode to YouTube, and continued to force people to watch this amazing fan made piece of joy.

Fast forward to this weekend.  Luke and I finally have some time to relax and watch TV, and we watch the first episode of the new MST3K season on Netflix.  It's a little rocky but full of obvious love and joy, and the riffs had me laughing out loud, so once done I checked out the episode list to see what other movies they were going to make fun of this season.

      And there it was...STARCRASH.

I had a geek out.  Told Luke the whole story as written above and then pulled up the YouTube and made him watch the MFT3K version.

We haven't yet watched the "official" Starcrash MST3K episode. I have no doubt it will be funny.  But no matter what I encourage you to go watch the fan made version.   If only because you get to hear two different versions of riffs to Christopher Plummer saying a line that is still one of my favorite bad movie lines of all time.  I won't spoil it, but trust me when you hear it you'll know what I mean.

Probably not yet since they don't have "artist" pages or whatever. Plus, the technology is up to date. It's a well known fact that Trocadero waits at least 3 years before adopting new technology, preferably if said technology is on its way out.
