    • New Musiter for no job...

      OboeCrazy Freelancer

Remember how excited I was about a week and a half ago about a new job that was all kinds of awesome? Yeah...some day I will tell the full story of that week, but all you need to know is I'm job hunting AGAIN.

So after I finished crying and screaming I made a Musiter. Because it's been months and I felt bad that I'd let it go so long without an update...and I suddenly had a lot of free time...and oboe is one of those things that always makes me feel better.

    • The Colors of Klayed...

      OboeCrazy Freelancer

My Wednesday night D&D has been rolling along so well that a group of us who have shown up every week are going to split off and start a regular campaign. We've been showing up for Encounters, which has been awesome because it's short and sweet and anyone can just jump in and play or drop out for a week. However a bunch of us have been doing this for months now and are itching to really dig into the 4e rules and go crazy.

With that in mind I finally grew tired of borrowing a mini to represent my dorky human mage Klayed, who I've talked about before. I've been enjoying playing a character so different then the normal D&D brutes that have populated these games...my companions are all muscled Dragonborn or angry Tieflings or almost evil thieves...generally a group more out for the money then to do any actual good. Klayed is essentially a paragon of good wrapped in the body of a klutzy dork. He's a talented healer and almost blindly devoted to helping anyone who needs it, including the bunch of roughnecks he's fallen in with because he just doesn't know how to find a party of actual good guys.

That paints a pretty obvious picture of a less then impressive physique. However all the minis that the store had on hand are your classic characters; strong, fierce, kinda bad ass. Where was Klayed in all of this kick assery?

I finally settled on this dude, who reminded me of Friar Tuck if Tuck wielded a gigantic hammer and smote those who gave Robin Hood the evil eye:

      Klayed1.jpg

I also took one without the flash so you can see more details, though that means the color is all off:

      Klayed2.jpg

I really like the figure. Maybe it's the paunch that keeps him from going overboard into complete bad ass mode. I also like that he's duel wielding a hammer and a book, which is totally Klayed as my character would absolutely smack someone over the head with a thick tome.

So apparently my next step is to paint him. My artistic abilities are sorely lacking when it comes to anything beyond crayons and finger paints, so I may enlist help on the actual act of coloring him in. I know I want to stick with a general cobalt theme, but otherwise I'm pretty stumped. Any suggestions?

I was hired for and began a new job today. Better pay, steady hours, casual environment, nice people, and close to home. Now THAT is the way to start the new year!!

    • Good start to a new year...

      OboeCrazy Freelancer

Today was an auspicious start to 2011. I managed to wake up at a reasonable hour and get the following activities done:

      smiley9.gif Work out
      smiley9.gif Make oboe reeds
      smiley9.gif Clean kitchen
      smiley9.gif Pay bills
      smiley9.gif Do laundry
      smiley9.gif Answer email
smiley9.gif Play Gears 2 with friend in Germany
      smiley9.gif Play Reach
      smiley9.gif Play Minecraft
      smiley9.gif Chat with boyfriend

Now if I can just get myself a great job this week I can count 2011 as the best year ever.

So...what did you do to make sure your new year started off right?

    • Thank Heaven For Friends & Presbyterians

      OboeCrazy Freelancer

I have a friend who recently moved to Germany because of his job in the Air Force. He, being a Wiccan, delighted in telling me, a Jew, about all the cool Christmas stuff he found in Germany and how he'd found me the perfect present for the holidays. Thus when a package arrived in the mail today I opened with glee:

      Schwibbogen.jpg

I had no idea what this was except the cutest rosy cheeked wooden choir ever, but the helpful instruction manual told me it was a Schwibbogen and explained what it was. I'll link you to the Wiki page, and I'll even link you to the webpage that has a nice lady pronouncing Schwibbogen as often as you'd like so you can also figure out how the heck to say that word.

Here's the fun thing...I think either something got lost when being mailed or this is a strange Schwibbogen. Because there's a whole bunch of info about a big wooden arch that I'm missing, and the instructions have the following sentence that when my roommate was reading it out loud to me as I marveled at the thing I would have SWORN she was just making things up:

If the propeller, which serves as the drive of the Pyramid is not pre-assembled, please place the individual blades into the holes drilled around the propeller hub at a 45 degree angle.

You might notice there is no propeller, nor Pyramid. Nor is there a big arch, which is what Schwibbogen stands for. I have a schwibbogen-less Schwibbogen sans propeller and Pyramid. I'd like to think he sent me the starter kit and if I get good at the basic Schwibbogen he'll send me the schwibbogen upgrade!

I also got the 4th in a series of gifts from the lovely Linnea, a set of Kokopelli book holders! Here they are, not holding any books:

      KokopelliLinnea.jpg

They are awesome, as have been her other Kokopelli gifts of a necklace and door hanger, and now I am surrounded by little crazy pipe playing guys with wild hair. They require books to hold.

Also I had my dress rehearsal tonight for the Christmas Eve gig I am playing tomorrow. It's with one of the coolest Presbyterian churches in Tacoma. Why are they cool? Well besides the fact that they are friendly and happy and filled with cute old couples who are too spry for their age...they feed me free food, the conductor gave us Starbucks gift cards, and THEY PAID ME AT THE REHEARSAL!!!

You might not understand how filled with awesome that is. As a classical musician I'm fortunate if I'm paid at the concert, normally having to wait a few weeks after the concert to get a check in the mail that might even be post dated. So to be paid AT THE REHEARSAL makes me love these Presbyterians and their conductor. Despite the fact that most of the regular orchestra members can't play in tune at all. It's a painful gig that I grin all the way through, because I'm spending Christmas Eve playing oboe for people who are just happy and respect me enough to pay me early.

And that's what Christmas is all about: Wiccans with Schwibbogens, fellow Jews sending Kokopelli, and the most awesome group of Presbyterians on the planet.

    • An Awesome Revelation...

      OboeCrazy Freelancer

By now most of you are familiar with the Revelation soundtrack available from the RT store and iTunes. It's an amazing soundtrack from an incredible season, and I highly recommend you go out and get it now from either location!

      product_1288974717f.jpg

The interesting thing for me about the soundtrack, and the reason I waited until now to talk about it, was the fact that I got a chance to play on it.

      Revelation1.jpg

Jeff contacted me a few months ago asking to record a few bits for the soundtrack, and I was more then happy to do it. I'm sure my roommate was less then thrilled as I played stuff over and over for hours into a microphone to get just the right take. smiley8.gif

I don't know if you can see credits in the downloadable versions (either iTunes or Zune marketplace) but if you buy the CD they're right there, and I'm pretty darn proud and humbled to get the chance to do what I love for the show that I love and play music by a brilliant composer. I just got some CDs today so I took the picture of the full credit list so you can see them all....including me. Right there, on English Horn.

My favorite of the pieces I got to play on is #9, Epilogue, because I love nothing more than soaring lines that let me sing. And Jeff did that wonderfully.

Go buy the soundtrack. And tell Jeff thanks for his awesome work. smiley12.gifsmiley0.gif

    • I Love Cracking Nuts...

      OboeCrazy Freelancer

Every year I play the Nutcracker suite for some Christmas performance somewhere. I think it's a law that all professional musicians must play it every year in some form or else the union takes away our reeds. This year I played it with the Federal Way Symphony, and Luke was kind enough not just to come but film my performance. Because I am vain...and the film quality isn't that good...I just clipped out my two English Horn solos to put up on YouTube.

The whole concert was filled with Christmas music, and Christmas related music, and even a few random bits of almost but not quite Christmas music. Then there was the Verdi opera chorus from Nabucco, "Chorus of the Hebrew Slaves" (or as our music said the "Enslaved Jews") which is an awesome piece and a tune that will stick in your head for days. We all figured it was in the program as some sort of nod to the fact that Chanukah was happening. However our conductor went on and on about how it was a metaphor for the Italian patriots trying to unify Italy as one nation. And then said it was nice to not have a Christmas concert that had something other than Christmas music in it, and then we began.

No mention of Chanukah. I don't know if he just didn't know, didn't care, or didn't think we should mention it in the middle of a CHRISTMAS CONCERT. smiley6.gif

So I will do what he did not since it is still Chanukah right now.

      HAPPY CHANUKAH!!!! smiley12.gif

What year did you graduate from IC, again? I saw in your comment on Steve's journal that you're a fan of Whose Line (and why shouldn't you be). Reason I ask is 'cause for a couple of my years at IC I was a cast member on a show called "Quabble" on ICTV. We were, essentially, a complete rip-off of Whose Line. It was awesome. And really really funny.

Also, Colin Mochrie and one of the other guys from the show, (not Stiles, Brady or Carey, sadly) came and did a show on campus. It was incredible!

      That is all. smiley0.gif
