    • D&D is Awesome...

If you've seen my most recent images, or follow my Twitter (oh gezz I can't believe I actually typed that) you'll know I've been playing old school Dungeons and Dragons recently! Wizard of the Coast is running something called "D&D Encounters" which is pretty much D&D for beginners. You sign up at a local game store, and once a week go in to play a single encounter for an hour or two in an ongoing campaign with the same characters and DM. It's geared towards 4th edition newbies (or just D&D newbies in general) to teach them how to play, or people who want to play and don't have a group to play with. So far I've played two weeks in a row and it's been a lot of fun!

The first week was us all rolling characters and then playing our first encounter. My awesome roommate joined us to play, and my amazing boyfriend tagged along to watch and draw.

      OboeCrazy4cded467c5934.jpg

So let me tell you a little about Klaydie, his spelling, and why I'm playing a dude.

I was one of the few people at the table who had some D&D experience, though it's been a very long time and I'm rusty on the new rules. But in the spirit of helping out the group I said I would take whatever class was needed. Since most of the party wanted to be kick ass fighter type people I chose a cleric and decided to go with healing. No problem, that was one of the classes I wanted to play. However I spent so much time rolling my stats and picking out armor and figuring out how to maximize my healing potential despite a low intelligence that I didn't think of the important stuff...

Name. Age. And why the heck are you here?

So when the DM had us go around the table and give a brief summary of who our characters were the only name that popped into my head was the name I jokingly give all of my plants when I have plants for pets: Clyed.

Some of you may remember a journal where I talked about my pet pepper plant called Clyed. I'd find it and link it too you but every time I go journal surfing in my own history I spend an hour reading old journals and never actually find the one I want. Clyed the hot pepper plant was the last in a long line of Clyeds that included Clyed the African Violet, Clyed the Spider Plant, Clyed the Aloe plant, and Clyed the Air Plant. Clyed is my go to silly name.

Thus when prompted and unready I said Clyed. So she became a he and Luke added stubble. Also since I didn't spell the Cleric's name Clyed became Klaydie, which is a much more fun way of spelling such a silly name.

Last week I did good...revived two party members, killed off the two biggest bad guys, and managed to convince the rogue and the knight not to kill each other. This week ChurchesWife couldn't attend due to work and Luke was back home so I went off to adventure with new players. We had a blast though I failed completely to do anything of renown thanks to awful die rolls.

Our new DM brought minis, so I got to look very cool falling over dead after a halfling kept sticking knives in my back. I revived one party member before going down myself, and managed to hit no one.

      NOTHING.

At one point I FAILED a heal check (I'm a CLERIC for cryin' out loud!!) and on an attack roll managed a natural 1 and had to watch my ego take a critical hit.

I still managed to have a lot of fun, especially as the rest of my party were enjoying themselves and we all got along really well. So I will be back next week for a pre-Turkey Day D&D, and hopefully next time my Lance of Faith will hit SOMETHING!!

It's no secret that I'm a huge Halo fangirl. In fact since Reach came out I've played almost nothing else except Reach every day for weeks on end.

      ALMOST nothing...

This week my wonderful roommate convinced me to get the Kinect at launch. It wasn't hard to do, I really wanted it but had figured to wait a few weeks for my discount to kick in. But the desire to play Dance Central won out and we went in together to get a Kinect with a few games.

      Kinect.jpg

The Kinect has intrigued me and I had fun playing Dance Central at PAX. Despite the fact that I'd clearly be lumped into the "hardcore" category of gamers I have no disdain for so called "casual" games. If it's fun I want to play it. So we set up our black bar and started dancing.

Overall I'm pretty impressed. The vocal interface is almost flawless; the Kinect has yet to hear me wrong, or not hear me at all when I command it to do something. Moving through screens and selecting things can be a bit slow as there is a slight lag on hand movements and the cursor on screen, but wisely the cursor must be held over your selection for a long enough time that accidents are rare. Dance Central remains tons of fun and feels accurate as far as tracking my movements and comparing them to what is supposed to happen. Your Shape had a fairly comprehensive lineup of workouts and does a good job of presenting them in a simple but not condescending fashion. My first workout was decent and I'm looking forward to more.

The only issue I've had has been with depth perception. The Kinect is excellent with slower movements, or right and left, but forward and backwards it sometimes has issues with. One of the exercises in Your Shape would always fail me because it couldn't track me lifting my foot up behind my body very well. I'm unsure if the room needs more light of if it's really the fault of the sensor, so I'll keep playing around with it.

Overall I'm happy with it so far. The game lineup is pretty small, so I'm looking forward to more variety. However I see a ton of potential and already a lot of good things. Was it worth it? Absolutely.

The other game I've been playing for weeks, usually in between games of Halo Reach or in bed before sleep, has been Minecraft. I'm addicted to mining for diamonds and killing zombies. Yesterday I used the new teleport system to bring myself to a brand new area of the map filled with towering cliffs and a forest of trees. And apparently a bunch of suicidal animals.

      MinecraftTreePork.jpg

First I watched one pig fall off the cliff to his death. Then I saw a cow take the plunge. And then a final pig not only committed suicide right before my eyes but landed in the canopy of trees in such a way that the pork it dropped from it's death sat waiting for me in the leaves.

      I love this game.

I'm enjoying using Twitter as a medium for quick thoughts, but most of the time I recognize it as something superficial and easily ignored. However every one in a while something happens that makes me VERY happy I use it. My example? The following conversation I had with some friends of mine, quoted here from my twitter feed:

Plankton_Prime: Kind of upset by the homophobic views of someone I know, had to set him straight, he had not good arguments and none of them made sense.
OboeCrazy: @Plankton_Prime There are no good arguments for homophobic views. Good for you for fighting back!
Sunflower4000: @OboeCrazy None? Does "it goes against the religion I believe in" invalidate someones' feelings? Just curious, you know my stance!

For the record Sunflower is a very tolerant, wonderful person who just likes a good free speech discussion. I would have replied however a mutual friend of ours beat me too it!

tobin00: @Sunflower4000 Funny that Christians forget that Jesus never mentioned homosexuality, but he said "Do not judge, or you too will be judged."

Sunflower, who had previously discussed not liking the McRib sandwich yet never having tried it, replied:

Sunflower4000: @tobin00 Just like my judgment of the McRib. :(
tobin00: @Sunflower4000 Exactly! You dissing the McRib made baby Jesus cry. I hope you're happy now.
OboeCrazy: @tobin00 @Sunflower4000 Thus the McRib proves that homosexuals shouldn't be persecuted. Suddenly this Jew wants to go to McDonnalds.

This weekend I and hundreds of other Halo and breast fanatics will take part in the Fight Like A Girl Tournament, an event sponsored by the Cavegirls to raise money in the fight against breast cancer. I like Halo, and I like healthy breasts, so I participate every year.

      flag-tall-background.jpg

While it's too late to sign up for the event it's never to late to donate to the cause. All the proceeds go to charity, and you get that warm fuzzy feeling from helping fight cancer and save breasts. smiley12.gif

This year I can't participate as much as I would like to due to a rehearsal I have Saturday morning and a lack of funds. The lack of funds has kept me to signing up only once for the Play With Bungie event, and the Saturday morning gig keeps me out of the FFA tournament. But if you see me on with a bunch of H3WM playing Firefight that's us in the Firefight part of the event. Wish us luck and headshots!

For that aforementioned Play With Bungie event Luke and I are signed up to match up with two random Bungie employees. The usual way the event works is you play a custom game against them and have a chance to chat and laugh and kill. However I usually try to convince them to go into matchmaking WITH us so we can beat up on randoms and watch flaming skull heads in action. It's much more fun to be on the same team, and we usually have a lot of fun.

So there you go. If you've ever wondered how I get the chance to play with Bungie people there's the secret. I PAY THEM. smiley0.gif

    • No, it's not OK....

      OboeCrazy Freelancer

No, it's not OK for you to send me a paycheck late and on TOP of that postdate it for a week later. You said you would pay me in 2 weeks and now I will not get the money for 4.

No, it's not OK to use racist, sexist, and homophobic language because "the other team is doing it" or because "it will make them angry and make them quit and then we win" or any other reason. It's wrong and I don't want to play with you when you do it.

The part I can’t figure out yet is the party/group thing.
Like if I meet a guy in a bar and we go back to my place and next thing I know I’m doing things I wouldn’t normally do and wake up the next day feeling very ashamed...
      .
      .
      .
I mean if I meet a guy during a match and we make a good team, we should stay teammates. That’s what I meant, how do I do that? Stay teammates against new rocket wielding opponents.

Seriously, I can’t count the number of times I’ve given a -1 Lame when all I wanted to do was look further down the page.

Now on to the original post:

Ok, there is a journal coming out of this.

Gives love to Lauren for sparking inspiration about orange people.

Ok how about this, I tackle the main plot elements and you write the music and singing portions. Then we edit each other’s work. I’ll fly up to New York every second and third Saturday of the month and you fly down to Louisiana each Friday that I’m not coming to New York.

I’m thinking something about a kid who sells bread on the corner but through a strange chain of coincidences is mistaken for a hero who saves people from fire…but fire may be hard to do on stage.

If you're little song is any indication, it'll be great!

It isn’t. When we had to write poetry, I always had the hardest time coming up with words that rhymed. I prefer to convey my emotion through free verse or the occasional only semi-rhyming lyric rampage (actually in that scenario I would be the one saying “I’m on a rampage†because that’s all I could do on demand).

So when everyone is using a Marvin avatar do you win something?

I wish. smiley1.gif I think, at this point, I'm just waiting for one of two things to happen. I'm either waiting to see how long before people start changing back to normal and leave the whole thing behind, or waiting to see if Marvin can invade a mod's avatar. That's when I'd finally call this a success.

No, we had a nice wet (cold!) Fountain Day. They scheduled it in with a bunch of on-campus activities in order to discourage people going down and partying on Coddington. The locals got real uptight about it and started petitioning the mayor for police to hang around on that day to prevent any large parties.

Oh, and Slope Day over at Cornell has, apparently, been totally transformed as well, apparently. Now the school organizes it. They bring in bands and drinking is still allowed, but there's a strict age-policy and people get booted really easily. smiley4.gif

We still got our T-shirts, though. So I went away happy. smiley0.gif

The thing I bet you didn’t know about Yanni is after he has put everyone to sleep during his concerts, he gets people he’s hired to plant little bugs in your ear and crawl down your ear canal and buzz. The vibration, when so close to the concert-goer’s ear sounds like someone is whispering “Yanni sucks†which in turn makes the concert-goer think that Yanni sucks. Why he does this when everyone already thinks that is anyone’s guess. But, come on, he’s Yanni, have you seen his hair?

      Similar to the

      “You’re a thing babies suck on.â€Â
      “No dude, that’s a pedophile.â€Â

      joke sans the actual definition.
