It's no surprise to anyone that I'm a huge D&D nerd. When I moved out to Seattle 5 years ago I was lucky enough to find a group of wonderful people to play D&D with every week, and for these last 5 years those friends have stuck through store closures, players moving, and a change in edition. We meet every Thursday (with occasional breaks for holidays and sick time) and play for 2-3 hours. It's a constant source of joy in my life, and something I always look forward to.

In the last few months I've become addicted to Critical Role, a show on Geek and Sundry featuring a bunch of voice actors playing D&D. They'd apparently been playing as a group for years before the producers of the show came along and asked to film the game sessions, so the show is just a high quality nuts and bolts D&D game with amazing actors. It's hilarious, fascinating, and hugely entertaining as these are all professional actors so the roll playing is super high quality. They all obviously enjoy playing, enjoy each others company, and Matt Mercer (the DM) runs a fantastic game. It's become my favorite show, and at 3-4 hours an episode every week it is a good chunk of viewing time.

The only drawback is that they recording live on Twitch...on Thursday nights. Yes, apparently Thursday is D&D night in the cosmos.

Geek and Sundry posts the recording of the episode on their website the Monday after the show, but that means not only do I have to wait several days but attempt to avoid spoilers the whole time. Which, thanks to an active fan community and what with me following those actors on Twitter, IS SUPER HARD.

I've been a Sponsor on Rooster Teeth for years now, so I've always been a fan of supporting online content I enjoy. So last night I finally subscribed to the Geek and Sundry Twitch channel. Not only am I supporting creators who I enjoy, specifically those who make this show I've fallen in love with, but now I have access to the Twitch stream immediately after the show. No more waiting 4 days for an episode, I can just binge on D&D as soon as I get home from playing D&D!

So go check out the show. Go follow them on Twitch. Fall in love with all of those characters, the people behind them, and the DM who makes it all come together. And then tell me what Twitch channels YOU are subscribed to!

(also go check out Dungeons & Dragons & Drunks, on the Glib Shark iTunes feed, and listen to us play as well!)

It's been 7 months of visa wrangling and living apart, and 6 years of living in different countries while dating, and all of the difficulties you can and can't imagine when it comes to that kind of long distance relationship. But @lukemckay and I are finally living together. There's something joyous about coming HOME TO MY FIANCEE.

We're dirt poor but happy. <3

My gigs don't start up till the end of the month so if you follow me on Twitter I've been doing #TwitterOboe on random days I'm home. Basically I take requests live on Twitter to play anything and everything on the oboe, recording on the spot renditions of The Pacific Rim Theme or Sneakers or even some Quiet Riot. It's always a challenge to see what people throw my way. If you happen to be on Twitter when I open submissions send me something!

Also I've been playing a lot of Halo (trying to get some more achievements done before Halo 5), Evolve (which is FREE on Xbox One this weekend, join me!) and even started playing a bit of Neverwinter (I got a code for a flaming bird companion at PAX and decided if the game was free and the bird was free I should at LEAST try it!).

And there's been tons of D&D watching and playing, watching Luke draw commissions (which I think he's still taking BECAUSE WE ARE POOR HELP US OH PLEASE), snuggling, decorating the apartment, and more D&D and snuggling.

We have a lot of snuggle time to catch up on.

    • Thank you for RTX

      OboeCrazy Freelancer

I want to thank everyone who helped make RTX an amazing event. That would be impossible, so here's a few choice thanks...

Thanks to all of the Guardians who made this event possible. Especially as someone on a few panels it was an absolute joy to know everything was handled with professionalism and a smile. Special thanks to @sirNARVY & @SailorTweek for helming that crazy ship.

Thanks to all the staff who wandered the halls making everyone happy.

Thank you to @karlibean and @john because without them my time at RTX would have been much more difficult. Thank you for letting me stay in your homes, hang out in your rooms, use your laundry, your showers, your toilets, and soak up your air conditioning.

Thank you to @RoadBlock and @Jengaship for once again proving that I have some of the most amazing friends, and am lucky enough to spend time with them every week on a podcast.

Thanks to @Juls and @john for being in our live D&D game, @lukemckay for the artwork, Jason Ramm for the custom Glib Shark dice rolling box, @Kyoshi for winning the Charity Auction and raising a huge amount of money for charity, and a HUGE thank you to everyone who came out to see us! Our room was filled to overflowing, and your cheers and enthusiasm made that not just one of the best D&D experiences I've ever had...but one of the best moments of my life.

      Thank you to @Count3D, @Kempob, @ragingterror, @Fireball, @DrJones, @Shadowsflame, @DarkBowler, @JDunlap, @KyleKahklen, @izzi, @Nester and probably a ton of other lovely people I am forgetting for drinks, laughs, and love. <3

...and for anyone with pictures of me with you this weekend, ESPECIALLY ANYTHING FROM THE D&D PANEL, I want thank you in advance for sharing them in the comments. Really. Help?

    • A Different RTX Experience

      OboeCrazy Freelancer

This will be my first RTX without @lukemckay

I'm not one of those people who think that couples have to do everything together. In fact I believe it is an excellent sign of a healthy relationship that a couple can go off and do other things independent of each other...then have a ton of fun telling stories about the experience to each other later on. But RTX has always been a trip Luke and I take together, and I have always worked his booth at the convention. Plus this year it was going to double as a engagement party/bachelor/bachelorette/wedding/honeymoon for us. However the government foiled that plan, and I suddenly find myself going alone.

On the one hand...that sucks. A lot.

On the other this will be my first RTX to enjoy without having to work a booth. I can hang out with my friends, go see panels (other then the ones I'm actually ON), and generally just enjoy a vacation. It's a bitter sweet kind of convention.

So if you see me, come on over so I can hug you? And then lets hang out. <3

Then come to the panels I will be on:

GlibShark Panel! Friday 3:30PM in Marriott Room 301! See @RoadBlock @Jengaship and I do what we do every week on our podcast...ENTERTAIN YOU! There will be surprises, prizes, and chances to participate in the OTHER big panel of the weekend...

GlibShark Presents Dungeons & Dragons & Drunks! Saturday 7pm in Hilton Room 406! Our third annual D&D game for charity is in a bigger, official venue but will include all the hilarity and tabletop joy of previous games! Come see @RoadBlock @Jengaship @john and @Juls play live improv D&D, with me as your humble dungeon master! With audience participation, loads of excitement, tons of laughs, and one charity winner being the BOSS MONSTER you'll want to be there to cheer on the adventure LIVE!

If you are not going to RTX remember to tune in to the livestream and watch both panels! And if you are going to RTX remember the DM can be bribed with food and drink.

      And hugs.

      I CAN say this...be yourself.

To quote whoever said it: “don’t be yourself because yourself sucks!†I, of course, have an awesome self to be (mostly because I systematically got rid of the parts of me that sucked. Now I’m totally awesome. Like way more awesome than everyone else. The awesomest person you know...I’m also humble)

I am not your typical woman.

Usually when a woman says to me she isn’t a typical woman, I regard her as a typical woman because a typical woman says she isn’t a typical woman, however, I know you aren’t a typical woman, though the typical untypical woman would think maybe she was a typical woman; so you’re not an untypical woman, though you are not a typical woman. If you actually followed that, I’ll be amazed. I barely could and I am the one who typed it.

I imagine the typical woman is also cool to hang out with. I’m all about expanding my word view so I’ll employ typical and untypical women equally.

I do brag about my boobs. Not that I had much to do with them.

So they’re natural? Sorry, I couldn’t resist. It was just right there saying “talk about my boobs, Frank!†How could I not? I was going for pervy, did I get it?

I saw the picture of you flipping off the Two Worlds 2 poster. It first made me laugh, then made me go on youtube to re-watch your review of the original...which also made me laugh a little.

I live in a world where there are more men then women. And by world I mean my life. That life as a professional musician...that life as a video game fan...that life as a geek...that life that is mine is one chosen by my own desires and just happens to correspond to those of mostly men. Thus for me to have more men than women in my life is just a matter of statistics.

But I'm damn proud to have FRIENDS...gender aside. smiley8.gif

The last line makes it sound like you’re surprised you have friends.

Nah, I’ve seen you heard you in action enough to know what you brag about. I can’t say I’ve “seen you†since we’ve never met in person. Maybe I’ll fix that one day.
You brag about video game accomplishments that apparently require skill because I can’t do them. You don’t brag enough about your music skill, which is surprising since you have enough to brag about and you obviously aren’t humble smiley0.gifsmiley1.gifsmiley8.gifsmiley7.gif . (Which of the smileys have we decided is the “I’m kidding†smiley?)

What surprises me is the life I’ve chosen: the life of a journalist, the life of a nurse, the life of a social butterfly; are lives supposedly full of the womenfolk, yet my male capacity is ever increasing. Not to say I’m going without, just going slightly less than I thought I’d be. That sort of sounds like a Flowmax commercial.

Maybe there’s a key way to search that I haven’t found yet. Any tips? You know, because you're a girl (I know this because you brag about your boobs a lot)

When St. Helens blew the ash all went east--they got buried. Seattle, which is north, didn't get so much as a dusting. I still have a small bottle of ash that a friend collected at Mt Rainier, but that's all the ash I saw.

      In reply to OboeCrazy, #2:

Meh. Given the 5000-year history of the Jews being chased down, kicked out or murdered by about every civilization on Earth, it would end up being a comic hour-long alphabetical listing of every country and race on Earth. Better to just confine the hatin' to the Pharaoh, I'm thinking. ... or better yet, George Lucas.

      Let's see... ahem...

      We the Jewish peoples are
Members of the tribes are we
      Proud to be Pedestrians
of that wacky big Red Sea
We are tough and really cool
      Never filled with mucus
      We will triumph over evil
      Evil like George Lucas.

OK. So the Eigenharp from Eigenlabs is a new electronic musical instrument that can and has been demonstrated to put an entire music package into the hands of a single musician. It resembles the shape, I guess, that of an oboe only shorter. On it's face, it has a large set of buttons that are sensitive in a variety of ways: Velocity, side-to-side filter effect sensitivity, and up and down pitch sensitivity, as well as a breath pipe for further effects. As well as a percussion button section near the bottom. I could really go on a long time on how awesome this is, but I'll let the people who built it explain it.
