    • Glib Shark times and D&D&D contests...

      OboeCrazy Freelancer

All of the podcasts I participate in are awesome!

Glib Shark is moving one hour earlier! Same day, Tuesdays, but now we record live at 9pm Eastern/6pm Pacific.  The earlier time is to help father-to-be Jenga in hopes he can show up more often.  Though it's pretty good for me as well.  So come join us, one of the longest running RT related podcast on the internet, and talk about geek things!

Dungeons & Dragons & Drunks is having a contest! If you've listened to our recent Drinks with the DM you know we are running a contest this week for a copy of Curse of Strahd signed by Chris Perkins! All you have to do is leave a review on our iTunes page and then let us know on Twitter you did just that! Simple, easy, and you could win an amazing adventure signed by one of the brilliant minds behind the product...as well as the Godfather of performance DM.

So come chat on Glib Shark about D&D stuff.  <3

    • International Womens Day

      OboeCrazy Freelancer

If you follow me on Twitter then you've seen I often solicit music to record on oboe and post. Because today is International Women Day I'm asking for female composers/songwriters to play music from. If you have a suggestion for someone I should play for you, just leave me a comment or tweet at me! I'll even respond here for a few days after today...since every day it's awesome to play music by amazing women.

You get bonus points if your suggestion is NOT Clara Schumann. She's awesome, for sure, but there is more to female classical music then Clara Schumann.

      <3

EDIT: Here's a few things I've posted so far:

Ethel Smyth: composer & women's suffrage member. I play the opening of her Violin Sonata. http://www.oboecrazy.com/music/TwitterSmythViolinSonata.mp3

My jazz is not dope at all, but TANK! by Yoko Kanno IS amazing and worth attempting on oboe! http://www.oboecrazy.com/music/TwitterTank.mp3

This past Sunday a whole bunch of friends got together and put on a show.  I was lucky enough to be asked to participate in this show.  We put on the show hoping to entertain an audience, and asked as a reward for being entertaining that the audience donate to help a family in need.  The cause was worthwhile, and apparently we were pretty good at being entertaining, because we raised a lot of money.  The money won't fix everything, but it will help make the world a better place for this family.

It took around a dozen people to make the show happen, and everyone who helped out was amazing.  I may have been the Dungeon Master of that D&D game/show, but none of that would have happened without all of the other people who organized/setup/ran equipment/spread the word/played.  Those people are the best, and make the world a better place.

Dozens of people gave out of their hard earned cash to help the last wish of a father and his family, showing that the Rooster Teeth and D&D communities are filled with amazing people who make the world a better place.

Countless more did little things.  Significant others who made space and room and stayed quiet while the performance happened.  Friends, strangers, and random internet people would couldn't afford to donate used their time and resources to spread the word to help find those who could offer money.  Even the small things help make the world a better place.

If you missed any of this, you can still participate. The GoFundMe page that's been linked to a few times is still active.  You can still donate, or spread the word.  Even if you have no idea what I am talking about you can go there and read about the lovely family of a long standing Rooster Teeth member who deserves any help we can give.  I know you'll do what you can, because this community always tries to make the world .... or at least our corner of it....a better place.

    • D&D, Giants, and poop

      OboeCrazy Freelancer

There are a myriad of reasons that Dungeons & Dragons is one of the best games of all time.  But one of the more recent reasons is how engaged the Wizards of the Coast people have been with their audience.  You can tweet directly to most of the creators of the game, ask questions, inquire about rule, and they are happy to respond with everything from jokes to hard core rules info.

Since I'm running Storm King's Thunder for my home game, and giants a big part of

that world, I had a question about...well...let me just show you...

      GiantPoop1.png

Jeremy Crawford is the lead rules developer for D&D, and the person you go to with serious rules questions.  Chris Perkins is a story writer and head DM for D&D, and the person you go to with story or "how to play or DM D&D" questions.  I didn't know if I'd really get an answer from either, but I thought they (and everyone else familiar with all the crazy stuff DMs have to think about) would find the question funny.

Apparently Chris found it also worth replying to:

      GiantPoop2.png

I found it hysterical that I got a "real" answer to my question, but also found it evidence of what I said at the beginning of this post...D&D and it's creators are amazing.  Who else would not only have fun with but also seriously answer a poop question.  When I mentioned that Chris responded again:

      GiantPoop3.png

      Touche, Mr. Perkins.  Touche.

I did reply once more, mostly because I finally took a moment to do the math.

      GiantPoop4.png

So now you know how large the average turd is of a D&D Giant.  Go forth and start a D&D group and use that knowledge TO SAVE THE WORLD!!

    • Performing, even when not performing...

      OboeCrazy Freelancer

Most of my interactions on social media are of the Performance variety.  I don't mean that they are not true, or that I'm faking anything.  Twitter, this journal, most of my time on Glib Shark and Dungeons & Dragons & Drunks, and anything else online for me isn't just a portal for information and an opportunity to keep up with those I am interested in.  I put things out there I think others will enjoy.  As a Performer at heart my goal is to entertain.  Sometimes that is more serious, or deep, or thought provoking...and sometimes it's just fun or funny or random or kooky.

My personal beliefs, especially political, have never been hidden.  But I don't usually push it because it's usually not important.  While my Performance might have a message, I do not preach.

So this journal is obviously not normal for me.  But this weekend the President of the United States banned Muslims from entering the country, so I no longer have a choice in what I Perform.  That choice was made for me long before I was born.  My very blood demands I do not stay quiet...because I am Jewish.

I will protest when and where I can, I have donated to the ACLU what little I can afford, and I will continue to stand up for my fellow humans who have the right to everything I have.  Because other humans stood up for my ancestors rights, I cannot ignore (nor would I want to) the demands of my history.

But my posts and tweets will still talk about playing oboe, or silly internet videos, or playing and watching D&D games, or amazing science stuff.  Because I'm a Performer and depth and layers and meaning are just some of my skills.  I will play beautiful music to ease your soul at the same time I use the money I earn playing that gig to donate to Planned Parenthood.  I'll post wonderful renditions of classical pieces alongside an article about Muslim musicians you should listen to.  I will make my Dungeons & Dragons bad guys be racists because sometimes we need to pretend to fight injustice like an athlete trains to run a marathon.

This rambling post was stuck in my head for a long time, and then a series of tweets from comic artist Lar Desouza not only resonated with me but gave me the inspiration to finally write.  Thus I will end this with those tweets...

"A line from today's mass really resonated with me. 1 Corinthians 27. ""But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong.""
As an artist/cartoonist I've often worried that I'm the 'foolish thing'. What point is there to drawing silly toons? But I've long since worked through that this is what I do.

This is my role. I can't cure cancer or sway politics but I can make my  little silly splashes and hopefully alleviate someone's day.

Fish gotta swim. Birds gotta fly. I gotta scribble. And that's as good as any bird or fish in God's eyes.

So, religious or not, I just wanted to shout out to my fellow artists. Whatever your muse; drawing, music, writing, science, engineering...

We may not ever know who our ripples touch but they are needed. Possibly to 'shame the wise'. Possibly just to lighten a weary soul."

...is that everyone and anyone can play.  Or run a game.

Are you listening to Dungeons & Dragons & Drunks? If not you should, not just because it's great fun with a long history and an amazing cast.  But the most recent episode @Juls takes over duties as DM for a special holiday one shot episode! Despite never having been a DM before, she's awesome and the game is loads of fun!

Go check out the show on iTunes or search for us on any podcasting app of your choice!  And then go leave us a review because you are awesome.  Then follow us on twitter and let us know how awesome you are because we run contests with all kinds of fun prizes and I happen to know another one is coming up soon!

    • Christmas weekend plans & traditions...

      OboeCrazy Freelancer

This weekend is Christmas, which means different things for a lot of different people. I thought it'd be nice to chat a bit about our plans for the weekend for two reasons:

      1. I like hearing what different people do during this holiday!

      2. If you've got some free time and want to try and play some video games let me know, maybe we can party up!

Christmas has always been half a working holiday for me, as almost every year since High School I have been contracted to play a Christmas Eve mass for a Church. It's always a good gig; easy music that sound beautiful, the service is always joyful and about love and peace, and I usually make a decent amount of money. This year is no different, I've got a 10pm Mass at the same Church I've played for quite a few different holidays. That means I'm gone Christmas Eve making money from 7pm until about midnight.

As for Christmas Day I celebrate the way my family often does. Being Jewish we go see a movie and eat Chinese food. This year is no different. Luke and I have tickets to see Rogue One at noon, and we've already confirmed that the Chinese place a walk from our apartment will be open.

Since Chanuakkah starts on Christmas Eve this year, I'll also be lighting the menorah at sundown like normal. And because I have both Friday AND Monday off from my day job I'll get almost four full days (minus gig time) to relax! Luke and I are going to try and finish Kings Quest on Sunday while eating Chinese, and I hope to get a good amount of either Halo or Gears Horde in as well. So if anyone wants to party up let me know!

So tell us your plans for the Holiday, and if you are looking for some game time!

      HAPPY EVERYTHING!!

    • Beethoven in 360

      OboeCrazy Freelancer

A few weeks ago I performed with the Lake Washington Symphony Orchestra a very special concert.  We created a performance specifically for children on the autism spectrum.  The lights were half illuminated, audience members were free to get up and walk around or make noise if they needed or wanted to, and there were designated areas where children could go dance.  Anyone was welcome, but it was geared as a chance for those who would have a difficult time attending a regular performance.  We performed at 10am on a Saturday, and while the audience was sparse they were extremely excited and appreciative, and we felt like this was an awesome thing to do.

There wasn't a lot of time to rehearse, and we had a guest conductor, because we were trying to put a full regular concert together at the same time.  So while it's not our most polished performance it was great fun, because the concert featured a lot of well known classical pieces that we often don't get to play.  One of those was a bucket list item of mine...the 1st movement of Beethoven's 5th Symphony.  Y'all know the piece, and will recognize it in the first  4 notes.  But it holds a very special place in an oboist heart as right smack dab in the middle of one of his most famous works Beethoven wrote a cadenza for the oboe.

That's right, everyone in the orchestra pauses and the oboe PLAYS A CADENZA LIKE IT'S SUDDENLY AN OBOE CONCERTO.

Since I was playing principal for this concert, that was me.

The other fun thing that happened at that concert was that we had a company there trying out recording the concert for VR.  They had a sphere of cameras placed right in front of the conductorthat recorded everything in 360 degrees, both audio and video, and afterwards turned the Beethoven into a VR experience as if you were sitting right in the middle of the orchestra.

They just posted the video on YouTube, so now you can listen to my bucket list concert for children with autism in VR!  Sadly you can't see me as most of the woodwind section are behind a forest of strings.  But you want to watch the conductor anyway, as that's the best view.

If you happen to be in the Seattle area this week or next week you can actually hear me playing live.  Tomorrow I have a concert with the Federal Way Symphony, mostly Christmas music but we are playing the Ravel Piano Concerto so you get to hear me play a MASSIVE English Horn solo in the second movement.  And if you need more Christmas music then I'm playing principal oboe again with the Lake Washington Symphony next weekend.  And if you come please let me know so I can say hello!

Lauren, what orchestral instrument most sounds like a cat meowing? I am trying to figure it out. Are there any like tone poems or such that has cat meowing? I know Peter and the Wolf has a cat in it but clarinet doesn't sound like a cat to me.

      I love maps.

Also oboe auditions are way worse. I could have years of experience and training but if I make one small mistake in my 12 minute audition I am dismissed.

"Hi. I'd like to squeak for like five minutes to get it out of my system so you won't think bad about me."
      "You'd like to do what?"
      "Squeak."
      "Squeak?"
"Yeah, squeak on my oboe. That way I won't squeak during my audition. So you'll hire me."
"Why don't you just not squeak during-"
"Look, I know what you're gonna say, but a girl's gotta squeak. If I don't now, I will later. And no one wants me to squeak when I shouldn't."
"Actually, you don't want to squeak when you shouldn't. I honestly don't care."
"You know what sir, I'm going to squeak in your face right now just because you said that."
"I don't see what that will solv-"
      Squeak
      "I see your point."
      "Okay, now I'm ready."
      "Don't bother, you're hired."
"Yay." So I hear you are in Seattle now. If I read the forty some-odd journals I've missed, will you address that somewhere in there? Also, Seattle is on my map you love. Looks good, dude-wise.
