    • 8 Reasons Why Vesperia Rocks (1-7)

      PhatPhil

I guess I REALLY need to clarify it for people... I didn't get much of a response for my entry BESIDES Shinigami (thanks though, I hope you enjoy it when you do get it) so you've most likely gotten here because I posted a link in your profile.

There are ten reasons why I think Tales of Vesperia is the one and only RPG to ever provide the MOST satisfying experience any anime/RPG/fantasy fan would be looking for... So let's get started, in no specific order:

      #1: Yuri Lowell

-Good GOD, this character came out of FUCKING NOWHERE. Seriously, are you sick of angtsy teens? Tired of the do gooder with moral dilemnas? The dramatic behavior change of a character? Then Yuri Lowell is your ideal hero. He just is a 'fresh' hero for RPG's, providing jaded gamers with a unique and unpredictable character type. Cynical, sarcastic and snarky, but also well intended and strong in spirit, we see such an array of behavior for him. From anger, to amusement, to intelligence, Yuri Lowell presents everything you should have in a stellar lead character. And most of all, he's also an ideal 'anti-hero' type of character. People praise him for a reason.

#2: The Rest of the Cast

-To be precise, we have very 'human' characters. From a straight forward, no holding back genius to a young boy who's merely trying to find a sense of direction and aspire to his role models, we are provided with truly 'geniune' character behavior. They develop, become friendly and function with one another as expected of a novella writing quality. Estelle provides a very interesting spin on the 'socially naive' princess character, evolving throughout the story and growing to change along with the other, from Karol's growth in self esteem, Rita's softening of her 'cut to the point' attitude and Flynn's struggle with fighting his way into a higher power for the sake of pursuing justice, only to be struck down by manipulative person after person.

#3: Traditional fantasy elements that find a pleasant medium for RPG veterans

-Project Vesperia was a success in the traditional fantasy story it provided, with what has been so far a predictable BUT enjoyable romp through all the normal affair, from magically dependant technology, ferocipus and massive beasts, humans with mythic and legendary powers, a struggle of political powers, division of a monarchistic government and a democratic guild driven union, you can expect both familiar and fresh elements within this game

#4: Top notch, air tight, error free, fast paced and challenging gameplay

-A great draw of the Tales series has been it's battle system, one that is a pleasant mesh between that of a brawler styled fighting game and normal RPG elements of Hit Points, Skills, Magic Casting, Skills, Equipment and the other norm. Combat takes place in a circular field in which characters can either run across a desginated line towards the target or freely run around the combat zone, easily switching targets. Everything from combo chaining to 'finisher' styled moves also exists here, with other new inclusions that provide a nice mix up to be explained later

#5: A visual style of great appeal

-While the typical table toppers focused around D&D or say Warhammer or even WRPG gamers might not find it the easiest to become appealing, any veteran to the genre who's played their fair share of japanese developed role playing games will find the visual impressive and well done. Keeping the cel shaded style of the previous titles, an improved engine provides for an even more painted/drawn style of appearance in the characters, with colored outlines, gorgeous spanning views and a large overworld to explore and dungeon crawl, city visit and traverse, the norm expected from these games.

      #6: The Changes

-With the tales series, it's always been a 'if it ain't broke, don't fix it' policy, which was pushed aside for the god awful gameplay of Legendia, albeit the game presented an enjoyable plot. However, while many feared Vesperia would be too much like the previously hailed 'best in the series' Tales of the Abyss, Vesperia brought back the classic gameplay with enough twists to make anyone concerned it'd be too boring and similar to the last PS2 title lose their worries. In combat, we have the inclusion of a moderate amount of change ups, from the new 'fatal strikes' system, which allows players to perform a powerful and quick attack, dealing massive damage with proper timing, capable of being chained with other PC's and/or players.

Of course, there is also the expansion of the over limit meter, the new 'burste artes' which provide a new lead in to the 'mystic artes' of the previous titles and an improved functionality of the overall control scheme for everything from basic combat, free roaming and a more complex defensive system. Outside of that, we have a fresh change up to the item synthesis system, unique and different styled weapons per characters, not to mention UNIQUE combat styles between characters, rather than just 'fighter, support, caster, healer' types. Anyone can find a party member to their preferred style of play and the AI functions well, without becoming too dramatically reliant on the players actions, provided the right tactics, strategies and formation is arranged beforehand.

There's more to go into but it's better for fans to see it for themselves and find appeal in whatever they choose to.

      #7: Nothing Blatantly Unpleasant

-To keep this one short, there's 'very' little to hate about this game. Maybe a villain or two, maybe the lack of clarification of certain goals, where to head to progress an 'active' event in the game, occasional disoriention on the part of the combat camera, but these are extremely minor and meaningless gripes most look past upon getting further into the game. You'd expected an RPG to have one or two main characters people may hate, but that's just not the case. There's really 'nothing' massive to complain about.

    • 8 Reasons Why Vesperia Rocks (#8)

      PhatPhil

      #8: Value

-With this game, you have a length, replay value, achievements, leaderboards, freedom in customization, secret missions, combat records, downloadable items, side quests and more that gives you bang for you buck, be it a rental or purchase. And with the publishing having ended long ago, the value of the game is stronger than ever, grab a copy if you can.

And there we have it. I could've been a complete fanboy and attempted to lengthen out other material that would've filled in number 9 and 10 but fuck that, I'm not here to bullshit with you people. I'm here to give you the perspective of one part critic, one party hobbyist and present it in as 'little' of a biased format as possible. While the game may not have an expansive audience and easy entry for those unfamiliar with these kinds of titles, those looking for a satisfying gaming experience NEED to have this one be the one of many gamers strive to have.

Tales of Vesperia is the example of GOOD execution and proper handling of a respected series. What was feared to be nothing special turned out to be a great title to stick into any player's library and keep as a fond and nostalgic memory of a classic definition of a 'good' game.

Please, if only so the developers know their effort is appreciated, just give the game a try. If you have a 360 and were disappointed by other RPG offerings (Be it the lackluster Eternal Sonata, over hyped Star Ocean, experimentally limited Fable II or others [All which I'd like to clarify I have played and enjoyed on some degree]) you have no excuse to not give Tales of Vesperia a try. I promise a great time spent by either yourself OR with friends and if you truly hate it and/or disagree with everything I say, then I'm sorry to hear that.

For everyone else, you have a great choice of a future purchase ahead of you, remember it next time you're in a rut of low entertainment funds or fresh/good games.

If you have a 360, you only need ONE JRPG...

      Tales of Vesperia.

Oh my god, I'm 12 hours in and have YET to cringe unlike Star Ocean. Seriously, great characters, great voices, great gameplay, great etc.

    • A Lot Happens...

      When your dad dies.

Seriously, between having to rush to virginia the day after we find out, being introduced to another half of my family, meeting three sisters AND missing 2 days worth of classes (3-4 different subjects each day mind you) I was in a living HELL for the past four days.

*sigh* Ah well, it's all over with and hopefully, that part of my life is dealt with for now.

...Annoyingly enough, I still have my GRANDMOTHER'S death to look forward to. JOY.

Anyways... No sympathy requested, just needed to vent. I literally 'never' knew him so the loss wasn't dramatic on my part.

Suffice to say, it wasn't all bad. We hung out with the families of my mother's college friends from Mary Baldwin College so THAT was enjoyable. Got to do some drinking and got a free 6 pack of Mike Hard Pomegranate Lemonade. :D

More fun will be had next time we go back, which will either be immediately following my grandmother's death (I.E. shortly after the funeral) so I kinda have that to look forward to...

But other than that, not much else is going on.

Star Ocean: The Last Hope is pretty good so far. Fun battle system, easy money making and aside from a rocky start in difficulty, it's all mostly enjoyable. However, anyone getting this game, I warn you ahead of time:

Do all of the Battle Simulator Curriculum's. It will save you the trouble of figuring out how to play the game WELL. If anything, the only thing that should still be challenging to manage afterward is pulling off a Rush Chain Combo, but that's because it's such a specific pressing and timing of the X button and right trigger, it can just be a bit of luck to pull it off.

      Anyways, I'll be around, hopefully.

    • PhD's in Political Science...

      PhatPhil

Sound like they are about as legitimate as degrees in

Seriously, Politics is a SCIENCE? Bullshit. This may be late night ranting but THAT'S MOTHERFUCKING BULLSHIT.

Please, tell me, someone who put as much work into a PhD for Political Science as much as say, my mother did to get her PhD in Organic Chemistry.

Fuck all you political scientists, your studies may be on a level equivalent with the mind required to comprehend certain levels of psychology, but it is NOTHING like the mind required for the equations and much more within chemistry.

Fuck every last one of you. You do NOT deserve the 'title' of having a PhD in what is a science for a fucking social study. Trying to put yourself on a level with people who have the same thing in say, Anthropology or Archeology or... Gah.

It just seems really disgusting that a subject that boils down to differing opinions and not cold hard facts like EVER OTHER SCIENCE OUT THERE, has something of an 'award' to it. You know what the reward for studying politics is MEANT to be? A journalist, a position in power in our government or just being a political analyst.

IT SHOULDN'T PUT THEM ON THE SAME GROUNDS AS A FUCKING DOCTOR.

And the fact that easily, there are millions of other americans who work 10x as hard to do either physical or mental work, ugh...

you know, I'm sure there's depth to political science and a lot of effort and studying required for it but... Ugh. It's just 'really' unpleasant to think that there might be people who would get a PhD in political science because to them, it was the easiest thing to get a PhD for.

*end wordy and overdramatic late night rant*

On how you're handling Haruhi-chan and Noyoron Churuya. Very good call overall.

For those who haven't checked it out yet, the 4-koma series of the exact similar names got ONA adaptations posted on youtube and each episode is accompanied by english subtitled episodes.

And if the intro fails to suck you in, I have no idea how you'll ever get into the show.

For everyone else, go check it out ASAP if you haven't yet. It'll fill the void until season 2 premiers. :P

I know you did, and I agree. I'm an Akamatsu fanatic, always have been, always will be. I am not excited about the new manga for one reason, and one reason only. It's not under his supervision. It's a completely standalone project, and I feel it'll ruin it. You'll say Negima, people will think Negima!? and if it's not done well, people will think of the bad one.

But, about the actual anime, I'm excited. While it will have more fanservice, it does plan on sticking to the story more than the first series, which, to be honest, only hit the main story through luck.

(I am aware that these two seem to contradict each other, but I will explain. it plans to be a LOT more fanservice. I've seen the ova preview, and I swear, 5 minutes of boobs and arses. That's not Negima. While the anime will stick to the story, which is good, it will do it while showing gratuitous T&A, which is bad.)

      Post edited 8/30/06 1:19PM

I can see your point, however, the fact is that the anime do already cross over, in at least small ways. Motoko and Setsuna practice the same school of swordsmanship, a few locations are the same, and there are a few other little things. The basic thing is that he probably wants people to thinlike you are, whereas the hardcore fans are happy for it to be seperate. i wouldn't mind a crossover, I'd love to see what would happen when Kaolla meets the Narutakis, or if Kitsune and Kasumi ever met, but at the same time, it would be a bit of a sellout.

And yes, the second series is going to be a total fanservice anime, which is kinda annoying, because behind the Akamatsu pantsu obsession is a decent story.
