smiley9.gif So we've all heard Ke$ha's "Tik Tok" song. With that "brushing teeth with Jack" line. Video documents some people going all Mythbusters on it.

      http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hvVecB3vwxM

Funny vid overall, but it was worth watching simply because of Cathy Nguyen, a local YouTube star. I rather fancy her. Nice to look at, pretty smile, quite a good voice (youtube her vids). And she gargles whiskey in this one. Oh, and that toothbrush...going in and ou--ahem. I'll stop myself there. smiley7.gif

smiley9.gif Second vid is from VIBE 15, a hip-hop dance competition held at UC Irvine every year, with teams from all over California. It was my first time attending, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Favorite performance hands-down was by Anbu Black Ops. This group features members from Kaba Modern and Quest Crew (both of which were on "America's Best Dance Crew").

Anyway, check it out. HILARIOUS. And the fact that it was a ninja-martial-arts-anime theme made it all the better!

      Well, greetings.

As you all can see, I haven't abandoned RvB. Haven't fell off the face of the earth. Haven't been kidnapped by a clan of bi-curious female ninjas. (Hmm...although that last one doesn't sound too bad...)

There are a couple reasons why I've been silent for the past few months. Had some things I needed to focus on. BUT! I'm back, and so now, to update you on what shenanigans and mischief I've been causing.

smiley9.gif So, for this entry, I'll start off with the first and most important piece of news: I've graduated! After four...tumultuous (see? I'm putting my education to good use already!)...years, I leave the University of California, Irvine with a degree in criminology. Pics of the graduation ceremonies below.

First up was Vietnamese Graduation, hosted by UCI's Vietnamese Student Association. It was a small ceremony - took place in a lecture hall, with about 40 graduates and their families.

Kicked off the festivities with a traditional lion dance routine, performed by VSA's "Southern Wind" Lion Dance Team

Each graduate was given a V-Grad medal, a framed certificate, and a yellow-and-red stole (the sash), with Vietnam printed on one of the sides.

Onto the official graduation day -

The fam. I can honestly say it's been a long time since I've seen my dad smile like that. My dad's always been a serious man at heart. More importantly, I think I sometimes came off as a disappointment to him in the past 4 years. But that's all behind us now. I'm just glad he found a reason to smile. A genuine smile.

Two of my very close friends from high school. They graduated from UC Berkeley, and came back home to attend my ceremony.

Greetings RvB friends. Yes, I'm still alive. I had a different journal entry planned, but there's been a disturbing development that has left me...well, fuming.

My dear mother sat me down today and asked:

"William (ok, she called me by my Vietnamese name)...are you gay?"

Now, I would have been slightly amused had this been the first time she posed that question. But that's the thing: it's NOT the first time she's asked about my sexual orientation. Last time, she confronted me after I put up this poster on my wall. Ironic, isn't it? That's about the straightest (or most un-gay, I suppose) thing a guy can put on his wall. But I digress.

You can imagine the answer I gave my mom then: definitively and unequivocally no.

That answer still stands today, and will stand for the rest of my life.

But first let's just get it out there as to why I'm pretty angry. It's NOT because my mom suspects I'm gay. It's something much simpler than that: it's because my mom , didn't believe me, didn't trust me, didn't take my word the first time. My dad was much easier to handle. I simply told him "I'm NOT gay. I like WOMEN. I like boobies." And that was the end of that. My dad replied "Oh. Ok, that's good." and went back to minding his own business.

On the other hand, my own mother effectively demanded that I prove to her I'm not gay. She wanted to know why I haven't brought any girls home, to introduce to the family. Or why I seem to always hang out with guys (err...last time I checked, few girls I know like to kick back, have a couple beers, and fire BB guns at inanimate objects...such as more empty beer bottles....for hours on end.) I calmly explained (again) the three main reasons why I haven't brought any girls home yet:

      1) I have high standards (I do.)

      2) All of the girls I had been interested in are unavailable (you people all remember my Damn-White-Guys-Are-Stealing-My-Asian-Women rants, right?)

      3) As a commuter, I don't get to have much of a college social life. Don't get to meet many people (read: girls) outside of class. Especially not when the parentals insist (vehemently) that I come home immediately after class is done for the day. (I know. Parents still treat me - an almost-college graduate - like I'm still in high school. It sucks.)

My mom bought the first two reasons, but she didn't bite onto the last. Instead she gave me a few words of wisdom: "No no! No need to meet girls at school! Meet girls at church! Catholic girls are good girls!"

      Hah. I know, right?

This was the last straw. Once, fine I can tolerate that. But questioning me twice? Gloves are coming off.

And so, starting today, I will be putting my four-step plan into action:

      1) Meet a nice, single, intelligent, attractive Vietnamese-Catholic (just to completely please the 'rents) girl. (Currently in progress, actually!)

      2) Bring her home and introduce her to the family.

      3) Take said girl upstairs and proceed to have mad sex with her. Everywhere. I'm going to make crazy, passionate love to her on the couch, on the dining room table, in the kitchen, in the bathroom, on the piano, on the washing machine, in my room, in my grandma's room, in my parents' bed...We. Are going to. Fuck. Like. Bunnies.

      4) And then...get caught by my parents. On purpose. I'll be sure to leave used condoms and empty birth-control packages scattered around the house to make it painfully clear.

If that won't prove my sexual preferences, then shit, I don't know what will.

I've been lagging with this journal. Let's have a rundown, shall we?

smiley9.gif Fall Quarter 08 has ended. I did so-so in my classes overall. Next quarter is going to be key to my college GPA...

So my internship with the UC Irvine Police Department ended (these only last a quarter, as they need to make way for new students). Not really, bummed...because I am staying on board. smiley0.gif The administrative supervisor offered me a job at the front desk, as well as a "volunteer intern" for the detectives. Basically, I will be PAID and I get to write more stuff on my resume. W000000t!

smiley9.gif I turned in my JET Programme application a few weeks ago. The Japanese Embassy has already received it, and all i can do now is cross my fingers until January/February.

smiley9.gif Oh, btw, my birthday went very well. My friends were lagging in giving me my presents, but they had good reason.

smiley9.gif Speaking of presents, I sort of bought a Christmas present for myself already. My old CreAtive Zen MicroPhoto 8GB mp3 player finally died...so I was in the market for a newer, better one. I will be honest, I did not even bother looking at iPods. I'm not anti-iPod...but I guess I'm anti-trend. It annoys me when I see people buy iPods because it's the "it" thing to do.

Besides. I decided on an mp3 player that pwns all others:

      360.jpg

That's riiiiight ladies and gents...the Halo 3 Edition Microsoft Zune. (Gee, that wallpaper looks familiar, doesn't it? smiley8.gif ) Next to my new Zune, is my old Zen. The Zune doesn't have the nifty "breathing" LED lighting the Zen had...but hey, now I can watch videos! It's...so new to me. Lol.

I will say one thing though...the Zune software? two thumbs doooooown. Ugh....I nearly went crazy using it last night. Maybe I just need to get the hang of it...but for now, Apple's iTunes is light-years better...and CreAtive's Media Explorer is light-years better than that!

smiley9.gif So much for saving up this holiday season though. smiley3.gif There are a few car parts I want...and then I'm hoping to purchase a gun some time soon (yay for being 21!). It turns out a good number of my friends want (or have been) going to the shooting range. Hell, my iaido teacher is a NRA-certified firearms instructor too. But yeah, that's going to cost me quite a bit....but HEY! That's what the UCIPD job is for, right? Lol.

smiley9.gif On a final note (for now)...so I'm seeing someone. No, not the girl I wrote about in this journal. As mentioned before, we're still very good friends, but that one's a no-fly zone. But anyway...yeah...I met someone at a friend's party. We started hanging out/talking a lot that night - I was pretty much the ONLY guy who didn't try to slide my hand down her pants. So yeah...I'd say we clicked...oh, did I mention she's a "24" fanatic? Been on a couple dates since then. (Won't see her this holiday though - she went home to NorCal.) Heh. Yeaah... smiley1.gif

    • Survival Plan

      PhoDacBiet

smiley9.gif So my 21st b-day was quite enjoyable. I don't exactly remember what I drank, how many I had, or what I ate at the dinner...but I did wake up the next morning with all limbs and vital organs accounted for, as well as zero STDs. All-in-all, a good birthday. smiley8.gif

smiley9.gif And how was everyone's Halloweens? Myself - well, I didn't go trick-or-treating with the little kids, nor did I attend the countless Halloween parties with the big kids. (Looking at my friends' FaceBook photos, apparently I missed out on girls in sexy nurse/sailor/referee/stewardess/cop/ninja/Bat Girl/GoGo Yubari/Pocahontas costumes. smiley3.gif )

By now, you're probably thinking, "Wow, you wasted your Halloween sitting all alone at home."

Nah, I actually went to my Friday iaido class, which coincidentally is on Halloween. And boy, am I glad I did. Basically, after completing the usual warm-up exercises, our instructor faced us and declared solemnly: "Class, tonight we are going to learn Anti-Zombie Iaido Techniques." Epik win? Epik win.

So throughout the whole night, there was a lot of discussion about what techniques to practice and what to throw out the door. (Keep in mind - as my instructor emphasized - that while it's all fun and games, every one of these is real and meant to be used against human opponents. But for that night, my instructor did not refer to them as "opponents" or "foes". He straight-up said zombies and the undead. smiley8.gif ). In the end, almost all stabbing techniques were thrown out - since they're pretty much useless against zombies. We concentrated on purely slicing/cutting techniques - particularly ones that target the head/neck...for obvious zombie reasons. =P

Anyway, for the last hour of class, our instructor divided the class up into groups of four. Our task was to create katas (forms) using the Anti-Zombie techniques. So, ladies and gentlemen, I present to you the "Shuriken Kata", performed by Team Shuriken. (The one giving the commands at the beginning is the assistant instructor. I figured my chances of survival increases dramatically if I teamed up with him =P )

Below is the play-by-play + screen captures.

      ZombieIai1.jpg
smiley9.gif So here's the scenario: the four of us are among some of the last human beings in the world. We're determined to fight to the death to protect our...harem. That's right. Not some bomb shelter. Not some fully-stocked supermarket. A harem. Full of Asian women. (Hah! smiley8.gif ) Anyway, so that's us scuttling in shoulder-to-shoulder formation, down a dark hallway to meet the oncoming horde of undead.

      ZombieIai2.jpg
smiley9.gif Suddenly four zombies leap out at us from the darkness! Since they're far too close for us to draw our swords in time, we lash out with our hilts at the zombies' heads to disorient them for a split second. (In this pic, I'm the left-most guy of the group.)

      ZombieIai3.jpg
smiley9.gif Though we were able to pushed them back, they're still far too close for a normal sword strike. Since they're too close, we have to pull our swords closer to our bodies in order to bring the effective cutting edge (the forward third of a katana) into play. But by bringing the swords closer, we'd lose strength because it's awkward to cut that way. Which is why you see us placing our left hands on the blades themselves - to add power and stability for such a cut. The close-range cut kills one zombie. We follow that one up with a pair of cuts (one horizontal across the neck and one vertical down on the head) of two more zombies (per person).

      ZombieIai4.jpg
      ZombieIai5.jpg
      ZombieIai6.jpg
smiley9.gif Now, zombies are stomping towards us on our respective lefts, reaching out at us with their arms. We swing the swords around to swipe their arms away and spin them around, follow that up with a hilt-strike to the back of their heads, and then decapitate them with cuts to their exposed necks.

      ZombieIai7.jpg
      ZombieIai8.jpg
smiley9.gif However, the previous technique pulled us farther apart from each other and weakened our formation. Four smarter, stealthy zombies took advantage of this, and dropped from the ceiling above, right into the center of our formation. But Ah-HA! We were quicker than them. We raised our swords, and brought them down using our body weight to cleave the zombies right down the middle.

      ZombieIai9.jpg
      ZombieIai10.jpg
smiley9.gif While we faced inward, another wave of zombies made a charge at us. Since we were in a very low stance due to the previous cut, we have to quickly whirl around and deliver a lower cut to the zombies' legs. They should topple over after that, and we deliver the killing blow to their heads with a downward stab.

      ZombieIai11.jpg
      ZombieIai12.jpg
      ZombieIai13.jpg
smiley9.gif Once the coast is clear, we sheath our swords. Swing back into formation. And scuttle off, back to our harem.

Hope you enjoyed it as much as I did performing it!

It's been a hectic, hectic quarter so far - and I'm not even at the halfway point yet.

smiley9.gif Let's see. New year, new quarter...new girls smiley0.gif . Seriously, UCI has a pretty decently attractive population, but DAMN! Where did all of these girls come from? Haha, more on that later. Anyway, as with the beginning of every new school year, UCI holds an event called LateNight @ the ARC. The ARC is the Anteater Recreation Center - our school gym. LateNight is basically a big, big demo of all the activities the ARC as to offer. All of the sports clubs, martial arts classes, dance classes, and such come out and show off to the incoming freshmen.

Oh. And apparently Kobe Bryant was there working out. I said apparently, because I didn't see him myself as I was doing the demo for iaido. But the locker room chatter was that Kobe was in the pool. It's not far-fetched, as Kobe does use the ARC as one of his exercise facilities (he lives in Newport Beach, right next to Irvine).

Anyway, I know college is a whole new experience for incoming students - but seriously? I question how some made it in. No, I'm not being a snob, but then again, certain things should simply be common sense. Take our martial arts demo for example. Several styles/classes use weapons. Space was limited, as the classes had to share one basketball court. Naturally, for the safety of all spectators, we set up those retractable barriers you see at fast food restaurants. Yet, there were still PLENTY of people who either ignored the barriers - or just didn't notice them - and walked onto or across the "stages" WHILE the classes were performing.

Yes. Let's just walk across the floor space of kung-fu while two members are wielding swords and spears. Yes, let's walk near the six iaido people in funny-looking clothing as they are swinging their katanas. And - this one is by far my favorite - let's walk right between of that kyudo archer and his target, right when he has his arrow ready. Oblivious people FTL.

But the demo went well. We had a number of interested people. Some were genuinely interested in iaido. Others were...well, it's inevitable to have one or two Japanophiles / anime geeks every quarter. I can't wait til that "Samurai Girl" series airs on ABC. I can already see the head instructor facepalming. smiley3.gif

      Speaking of which...

smiley9.gif My iaido instructor is one of the people who's writing a recommendation letter for my JET Programme candidacy. Can you say "score"? My instructor teaches a Japanese martial art. That martial art dates back to feudal Japan. That martial art originates in Shizuoka, Japan, where the dojo is located and where the 14th-generation headmaster is living. Shizuoka is my first-choice destination. Oh, did I mention that my instructor is Japanese himself? Lol.

I knew iaido was good for something. smiley8.gif

      Speaking of which...

smiley9.gif I'm not entirely sure what class is held before my iai class, but GODDAMN. There I was, standing near the doorway of the studio room dressed in my gi and hakama, sword bag strapped around my shoulder, just waiting for the previous class to vacate the room. Door opens, and out walks a hot Asian girl in a tank top and gym shorts. And another. And another. And another. Rinse and repeat 20 more times. What class is this, and where do I sign up?

I was ready to hump the ground and shit.

OK. I'd rather hump them. smiley8.gifsmiley7.gif

      Speaking of which...

smiley9.gif Girls. Remember the one that I thought was a great match for me? Yeah, uh no. Ask me why I even had a thing for her, and I can't possibly tell you. I was probably on drugs at the time. I plead temporary insanity. Ugh. I pretty much DTB'ed her (look up "DTB" on urbandictionary.com if you dunno what it means) and never looked back.

But, like I said: new school year, new quarter, new girl. Heh. smiley1.gif

I'm taking the introductory/beginner language course for Vietnamese. I figure I should revisit my roots, learn about my culture, and learn how to speak/read/write Viet.

HAH. Who am I trying to kid? I speak Viet fine. I just signed up for that class because 1) I need the units, 2) I need easy-A classes/GPA-boosters, and most importantly 3) I want to meet Vietnamese girls (I guess that counts as getting in touch with my culture, no? smiley0.gif )

Haha jk jk jk...I can speak conversational Vietnamese, but I don't have much hope at writing/reading. So yeah.

Met a particular girl in class. In a nutshell, she's everything the old one wasn't. Cute, friendly, genuine, and a little on the quiet/reserved side...unlike the old one (you should see her when she's drunk: loud, obnoxious, nasty, turn-off.) Anyway, for the past two weeks we've been helping each other with our Vietnamese (I found her struggling Viet-lish to be kinda cute, actually smiley8.gif ). We've also been talking outside of class - she's a transfer student. Though she's a 4th year like myself, this is her first at UCI, and so she doesn't know many people yet. After talking to her a few times, I realized I'm attracted to the wrong type of women.

      ...

      The unavailable type.

      smiley3.gif

Yah. So she's already seeing someone. I give you three wild guesses.

      .

      ..

      ...

      A white dude.

      smiley3.gif Sigh.

So I guess I've been automatically friend-zoned friends-owned. But whatever. I refuse to homewreck. What goes around, comes around - so she's off-limits in my book. Even so....

GODDAMN WHITE GUYS. STAY AWAY FROM OUR WOMEN, DAMMIT! smiley8.gifsmiley4.gif

Well I give you props for writing those entries. I've got two problems to concur before I do. I don't know if I'm more on the too busy side or too lazy side to write a deep entry. ::
Pssh you better like it! but no really, could you possibly be telling me that you haven't encountered the name "Jessica Nguyen" before? They're all over the place I assume. In my own school district when I was growing up, there was a girl 6 yrs older than I with my name. I'm just glad she && I didn't look similar. ::
Same here. ups && downs...or maybe I've experienced more of a difficult, constant struggle trying to maintain a middle-ish-up. After all, I haven't had any major downs like I have had in the past, but I haven't had any uber good events happen. I'll probably have more to share by late April when I will know all where I've been accepted for college. Then in May I'll have decided!!! Gahh I'm so excited, but as much as I want it to come, I have wayyyy too much to get done beforehand, and I feel that I don't have enough time as it is.
Did any of that make sense? Well if it didn't, I'm tired && hungry (and meat deprived on this Friday :~p) So I'm ready to go eat and pass out.

I truly wish it was better, but I think it's only gotten worse.

      Thanks for the journal comment.

After I quit my job nearly six months ago I was hoping to be able to travel to Japan before starting a new job. I'm still jobless, so I had to once again put my trip to Japan on hold for awhile. From what I have learned there are quite a few opportunities to teach in Japan asides from the JET Programme. In fact, I have a friend who was hired by a different company and is working in Tokyo right now. If you're still interested in teaching in Japan you may want to do a bit of research to learn more about the various opportunities available.

      Take care!

I performed a bit of an after-school special. It was good stuff. Bus pulls up, lights go on, kids start to disembark, and then there's a pile-up at the bottom of the steps.

      "... ... That's. My. DAAAAAAAAAAAADDDDYYY!!!"

Hah, I've been doing the exact opposite smiley4.gif . Senior year is really kicking my butt. Second semester, though, will hopefully be more fun with college crap basically done && all that jazz. smiley6.gif

They pay is pretty good. Starts off reasonable, and then builds year on year as you go through more training programmes. I think it'll be a really great career.

Dog is your average all-American mutt. Much like myself. Some kind of shepherd-husky-chow mix. With a slice of awesome thrown in. Best dog I've ever had. Had to give her to my sis when I went to Korea the first time, and they loved her so much, they kept her. Dog still goes nuts 9 years later whenever I show up.

I never got a free moment to even be able to hang out with you! I'm sorry. I didn't get a chance to see family, either. There was one night (but it was too late to do anything) where I had some free time b/c the other girls had gone out. I attempted to call you to just talk to you, but then realized the hotel phones were off line. and just thought it wouldn't do me much good to just talk to you if we weren't going to be able to hang out anyways. so I didn't try calling again w/ my own phone and studied for my AP tests instead.

Your journal entry killed me. :: Don't feel bad, my parents have asked my brother if he's gay (not really seriously in recent days though...) He's learned to take it lightly since we all know he's not. Soo, I guess you just have to somehow prove to them that you're not.

    • niveK37

Yeah, can't remember it was either Vlasic or Erhoff, but if you get knocked down to the ice and then get smacked directly in the face TWICE with a stick and the puck is starting to go away from that area, there should be SOME call. The hell is he supposed to do when he's down on the ice. What penalty? "Being too tired?"

What I saw from Erhoff was after the game was over. It was building up anyways in like those last two minutes. Refs let it get out of hand. I just saw all of the penalties called at the end of the game as well. Wish I could find better clips from the end of the game that showed all of the last two minutes or so.

By the way, are the whites what they normally wear at home?

    • niveK37

Yeah, there were not fucking calls at the end when I think Erhoff was down on the ice and got smacked in the face with a stick by Perry, I think it was. And then Perry DOVE into the net and PUNCHED Boucher in the face and THEN tried to step on him. That was pretty bullshit. Refs were afraid to call anything at the end because they were scared.

So the no-glasses-allowed-in-the-Air-Force is a myth? Haha.

The Air Force allows glasses; it's a no-glasses-allowed-to-be-a-pilot. You need perfect vision if you want to be able to fly anything.

Thank you thank you! Yeah, I don't really like drinking and I never really drank before. I didn't really drink anything that bad, just these two terrible tasting shots of something that I had to chase with a drink that tasted like something you would get from Jamba Juice. Now THAT was pretty alright.

I was never under hard alcohol or any alcohol in general. Sometimes people were like "it tastes good" DOES it, though? Hell no. Sometimes people would say "You'll just acquire the taste for something" but the thing is I don't WANT to. Alcohol has a nasty taste, not one I'd like to get used to.

And it depends on who is looking at you whether or not a fruity drink looks cool. Hahaha! =p

Yeah I heard the sad news the day it came out. Stupid economy and it's bullsh!t. V10+AWD+New Look+Acura Technology = F1 Race Car. VTEC in a V10!?!? My god, the RPM's would sound like music orchestra!

Sad though yes. As for that snorkel, it is functional. I've seen a White w/ Black Roof Honda NSX for sale in Japan with a snorkel on it + Kitted. So they sell them up there as aftermarket too. But they ONLY sell in Japan and for ALOT! Unless you bought the car.

Ditto on the NSX Snorkel. But it is uber rare and impossible to find unless you find a NSX with it on and buy the car itself. As for the one seen in the photo I didn't know it existed until I bought a copy of MODIFEDmag, December 2007 Issue (Seen on a red one @ a local carshow in the US).
