My Fellow Americans, and the rest of you.

I'm announcing my candidacy for President of the United States of America in 2020. Who is with me?

    • howdy there, fellow kids!!!

So I got tapped to do a really cool thing next week. I am getting to fly with our Senior Vice President to University of Michigan and talk about how awesome our company is to work for. I am BY FAR the least senior person on this trip, so its a little daunting, but they wanted someone 'young' and 'vibrant' and someone who can relate with college age human beings.

If you would have asked me this five years ago, I would have said that I was all of these things, but now...I'm starting to feel a little older now. It is a morose feeling, to realize the chapters of your life are passing by and are becoming distant memories. I was in college when the Twin Towers came down.  I watched the OJ Simpson chase live. I used to have to make sure no one picked up the phone because I was getting ready to get onto the world wide web.

Hanging out with all of you on this forum does help me, though. I get to have great interactions with people who are most decidedly a 'younger' generation. I feel like, though I have a few more miles on me than most of you, that I can share my life with you as peers, and hopefully my experience is helpful to you.

So, next week, when I'm wearing hipster wear (we call that Smart Casual in the biz) and I'm trying to relate to the best and brightest of tomorrow...I just hope I don't look like I'm trying.

So I want to share something with all of you that happened this week. Often times conservative Christians are labeled as being bigoted, intolerant, backward monsters incapable of any sort of co-existence with anyone that disagrees with them. My dad, a Baptist preacher and staunch conservative is proof that this is not the case.

My best friend growing up has a child who is transgender. We have known him since he was a baby girl in diapers. Our lives have been intertwined forever. A few years ago, she began transition and is now currently on hormone replacement therapy when she transitioned to male. He has a boyfriend who is also transgender. From the moral perspective my dad inhabits, this is immoral on many levels and he disagrees with the lifestyle. And yet, this weekend These two transgendered men came to their house and helped them move. My father treated them as he would any other man, calling them "gentlemen" and "boys" and not shying away from asking them to pick up heavy items or jump up in the truck to help move things around. The entire time...he treated them in the manner that they wished to be treated.

I think that this is the example that needs to be elevated as the RIGHT way of doing things. My dad does not agree with them and has issues with their choices, but he treated them with the respect that they deserved and acknowledged their own agency. If they would have asked him his thoughts in the matter, he would have told them that he didn't agree with their choices, but that he still absolutely loved them and that they were still family.

In this climate of forced affirmation (You WILL agree with me, or I will call you out as a homophobe, sexist, bigot, etc...) we don't often hear about things like this. Dad was not grudgingly accommodating; he was earnestly treating them with respect from his heart. For some, this is not enough. For some, they not only want to be treated the way that they want to be treated, but they want to control how others think, feel, and believe. I think that this is very unfortunate and takes us backward. People should have every right to disagree with the choices of others, and should only be judged on HOW they act towards others.  It is possible to not agree...and still love.

So I'm listening to a playlist and a song came on the had a memory attached to it that I totally forgot.

So my family is musically talented. My brother and I both have music degrees and our mom has perfect pitch. Literally, she'd correct my playing from the kitchen "Jared, that's A-flat in the alto, not A natural."

      anywhoooo,

Because of this, we were often booked to do various concerts. I made a lot of side money singing at weddings and funerals and valentines day things. So one time my mom and I got booked for a wedding. It was good money, nearly $500 for 2 songs. $250 for a couple hours of work sounded good to me, so I agreed. there was only one problem:

I didn't think about how awkward it was singing romantic music with your mother.  We were asked to sing "Just a Kiss" by Lady Antebellum. It's a good song, but I'd much rather have sang it with someone I didn't know. Still, we were professional and killed it. I had forgotten about it until JUST THIS VERY MOMENT when the song came on and the memory came flooding back.

yep...it's still embarrassing, but I got paid so there's that.

Ooh, that's another thought. I feel like I should get back into the gig again; there is good money to be made, and I have an excellent range and breadth.

And on that note I have a question.

So I see a lot of commentary about dick pics on Reddit and other places on the internet.  Since I am old, I have many questions, but there is one that I'm gonna ask the ladies here (I'm iffy about putting this on the Ask the Ladies thread because its a little more vulgar than I am comfortable being:)

So here's a question: Do women actually LIKE getting them? From what I see online the answer is a big no; however how would the phenomenon be as popular if it didn't work out occasionally? My only frame of reference as a guy is to ask myself the question if I would enjoy women sending me...what...tit pics? the hypothetical answer (assuming that I didn't have a moral or ethical objection to it) would be, yeah, awesome. The dude in my head that drives my libido has no problem whatsoever with an absolute flood of those things; however he doesn't get to come out and play as his pals reason, ethics, temperance, and modesty keep a tight leash on him.  Now..If I'm thinking about getting a bunch of sausages, I nope out of that...but that's just because I'm not ATTRACTED to sausages.

But to the question: do women like to have random dudes shoot a dm of their junk?

    • What is Justice?

      Priest NonSequitur OCC Consular

What are your thoughts on the moral impetus of justice?  I think this is the crux of why we fight so much between ourselves. So lets play a game.

You have to pick one. If you believe both to be true, pick the one that you think is the most true and tell me why.

      1. Economic disparity between people is immoral. economic redistribution between people is immoral

      2. Treating people different because of race, sex, ethnicity, religion (etc) is immoral. Not addressing historical systematic oppression by failing to implement some form of affirmative action is immoral.

      3. Choosing the good of individual over general welfare is immoral. Choosing general welfare over the good of the individual is immoral

      4. Ignoring the needs of the outsider when it conflicts with the needs of the insider is immoral. Accepting the outsider at the expense of the insider is immoral.

      5. Seeking justice at the expense of the innocent is immoral.  Not seeking justice is immoral.

      6. Impeding individual liberty is immoral. Ignoring the collective good is immoral

    • What is the greatest of virtues?

      Priest NonSequitur OCC Consular

Lets get down to the root of the matter, shall we? If we read Aquinas, we can't throw a stone without talking about virtue. In fact, he believed that there are four cardinal virtues: Prudence, Temperance, Justice, and Fortitude. In addition, there are three theological virtues: Faith, Hope, and Charity. These seven virtues would take books to unpack (look up the Summa sometime) and I'm not going to do that. I'd  also have to end up finishing up my greek education...and I don't have the time. So here is a hugely watered down version of these virtues: (BTW @Desayjin, you went to a Jesuit school didn't you? You probably know a lot more about Aquinas than I, Ignatius had a soft spot for him, so feel free to correct me if I drive off the path.)

The Cardinal virtues are virtues that all men have access to, the theological virtues are virtues that are specific to Christ, and are possible through the indwelling of the Holy Spirit. This means that to a non-Christ follower, they can display and act through Cardinal Virtues, but only through a Christian, reflecting the very nature of God, can theological virtues be displayed. If you read the Bible, 1 Corinthians 13, Paul states "So faith, hope, and love remain, these three; but the greatest of these is love..." When Aquinas is talking about "Charity," This is what he means...sort of. Our English translations don't do the words agape or caritas justice. Love in the English language is a catch-all for many concepts: it could have romantic, sexual, familial, friendship, or even preferential undertones. Love means most often in our language: passion and feeling. This is not what Aquinas is talking about, nor is it what the Bible is referring to.

Caritas or "Charity" Is the concept of the infusion of the "Loving-kindness of God" in action coming from the very depth of the soul. Think about it as man being a mirror, shining a reflection of God...only much more powerful as that reflection has action to it. It is much more than a simple feeling. It is a Doing. It is Man AS God's hands.  When Christians allow charity to motivate their actions, they display joy, peace, and mercy. It is my personal opinion that this is where people who share my Faith fail often. We are imperfect beings, shaped to perfection but bent by our own weight and as such do not reflect the perfect love of a creator who loved us so much that he sacrificed himself for us.

I started this post in a completely different vain. I wanted to talk about truth and how one cannot be tolerant and truthful without compromise. It's funny, but as I wrote it I realized that the question that I was asking was wrong. I think God spoke to me in that moment and made me as another question.  I was asking "What is the purest truth?" and instead I needed to ask "What is the greatest virtue?" I still completely agree with the premise I was working on that truth exists and that it is a contradiction to hold two opposing worldviews with the same weight; but what can I do with that? Sure, I could beat a person over the head with the idea that their worldview is wrong, but my voice becomes a clashing cymbal.

I see so many Christians earning theology points, or trying to win philosophical or political arguments but the foundation of their motive is broken. We can have the greatest, most perfect argument, and yet fall under the weight of our own pretense because we aren't grounded properly in the the life-full, moving Grace of God. We could have written the most perfect, Word inspired treatise that is founded on sound doctrine...but still fall completely flat because it doesn't come from a place expressing the loving-kindness of God. We can have the perfect belief and go through the motions of our spiritual life but be dead because our hearts aren't being moved by the need to express the Word of God in his power. We can stand up for justice and the poor, and do all the programs at Church and go on the mission field...but if it comes from any other place than the inspired, willful, push of the Holy Spirit to work His will in the world...it is a empty gesture.

In the end, it doesn't matter if I know what the purest truth is...if I don't have 'God's so loved the world' at the center of my being...it doesn't matter.

My issue is not with the discussion.  My issue is how people act when they perceive that they have the moral high ground.  It's easy to justify dismissing the concerns of another person when you think that they are morally deficient.

It is going to be difficult; though you have the Christian tradition to hold you together. One of my favorite musicians is Catholic- Matt Marr. Catholics can co-exist with Evangelicals or Protestants, so long as the foundation is the same. I would definitely get on the same page before children, You don't want confused kids on your hands.

As with all good things in life, it can't come without some struggle. Coming from different religions gives us a unique positive, in that we know we have to work through differences. In the end, it makes it all worth it and better than just kicking the can down the road.

You literally removed all of your personal information. Did someone stalk you or something?

Sounds about right. All fair reasons, at that.

The moral of the story: people are more interested in what YOU are doing than actually paying attention to what THEY are doing.

I got heat at work, not from this page, but because I was 'posting on FB during work hours' and someone at my job complained to my manager (who couldn't care less because I get everything done and work my ass off.) My manager just told me to be careful, so I locked FB down to Friends only, put all my co-workers outside that box and now they only can see on FB what I choose for them to be able to see. But a simple google search can find my RT profile; so I removed any demo. info.

        Fair enough. Why so secretive?

No; I just can't lock the personal information down to just friends. If there was a way for me to filter who can see what...I'd do it.

You renewed too fast for me to heckle your non-sponsorship adequately.

Actually, not an Atheist, believe in God very much, but I trust the Church as much as I can throw them. And they include but are not limited to an entire country.

      Nice!

Jambalaya (homemade) garlic bread, cake. Now that I'm an adult, I'd like a nice, tall, glass of scotch.

Male Lion. I would love to lay against Simba while losing on the Xbone

The Earth is Flat. I just want to see what that would look like.

Dengar, you can't tell but he's pretty good at telling a joke.

Hmm. Well, if I were to pick a car that would aesthetically look like a spaceship but not actually be a space ship, I would have to pick the Eagle 5 from Spaceballs
