I guess I haven't posted anything since the "office" fiasco.

      Yeah, that didn't happen.

I work in shipping now. Which, surprisingly, rocks. So it all worked out. :)

      Ok, that's all. :)

      Hello all!!

In the craft world, the busy season is known as August though November. Of course, that's no excuse for my absense prior to August.

But I am back! For a bit at least. To bring up the dreaded subject that I always bring up this time of year: CHRISTMAS.

I'm trying to get myself organized, and that includes updating my Christmas card address list.

So send me your address, so I can get you on the list, so I know how many cards I need to buy and how many stamps I need to buy. You don't have to send me a card back, you never do. I like to send them, it makes me happy. So send me your address!! :)

Thank you. I shall try to be back more often. I am sorry for the prolonged absesnce.

A girl back in the office at work just found a new job and gave her notice. Hopefully, I'll get around to telling the whole story soon, but the short version is that they have taken 2 people from the warehouse and we will share Jenn's job part-time and do our regular jobs part-time.

Which is a HUGE step in the right direction!!

No, I'm pretty sure I don't get a raise. I already make more than almost anyone who is not related to the owners. :)

I'm at work, and I've almost gotten through this stupid, stupid firewall. I'm using daveproxy.co.uk Basically, every website is blocked from me... except "foreign" websites, like google.ca and the proxy I'm using.

The problem? I still can't sign in to ANY mail site!!!

Can anyone help? I'm wasting more time trying to get around this firewall than I'd waste if I could just check my stupid mail!!!

I need something like this: openbooklz8.jpg

Only.. you know... not copyrighted. Just similar is good, but it needs to have that cliparty feel to it. And either black or brown.

We're seriously looking into opening a used bookstore, and if we do, that image will be part of the logo. Heck, do it in any color you want, I can make it black and white later and if its a pretty color, that might be part of the logo, too. S03.gif

All my mods (at least 30) to the first one with the right image. S03.gif

And DON'T just take out the "clipartguide.com" bit. I can do that myself. S03.gif And I'll know if you do.

      Thanks!!

    • Heart Shaped Box

      Prittykitty1

I just read a book, on Neil Gaiman's recommendation (he's a close friend you know... S07.gif) called Heart-Shaped Box and this book is by Joe Hill... who is Josepth Hillstrom King. He kept his true identity secret for quite a while, publishing a book of short stories (20th Century Ghosts) and selling Heart-Shaped Box before anyone at all found out.

Gaiman mentioned Ghosts in his blog ages ago, saying it was the best short story collection he had read in ages. Gaiman, who personally knows King and his family, did not at the time, know that Joe Hill was, in fact, Joe King. Several months later, Gaiman gushed about his ARC of Heart-Shaped Box. Best new novel out there. Best new writer out there. It was after this post that someone wrote to him and pointed out who Joe Hill was. And even then, it was through a series of coincidences that this person had found out. (a mention on S. King's article in.. is it EW? I'm not sure... which lead to something else and then something else and then to Hill's real name and lineage)

Heart Shaped Box has been out for a month now. For the last 3 weeks, I have not been able to find it in any book store, or at the library. Suddenly a week ago, there it was. Some idiot in the Stephen King forum tried to tell me that while Hill may be a good writer, his sudden popularity is due only to his father. If you know even the smallest background on this man, and his rise to this point, you can't honestly believe that. And I really hate people who will spout nonsense without having the foggiest clue what they're talking about.

For 8 years, his agent didn't even know who his parents were. The editor on HSB didn;t know who he was for 2 years. He won a Bram Stoker award for Ghosts before anyone knew his real name. He had an interview in Locus magazine back in July and THEY didn't know who he was until the magazine had almost gone to print and there is a little blurb at the bottom of the ariticle stating as such. Why? Because NO ONE knew who he was until slightly over 6 months ago. After he had sold the novel (and the movie rights to the novel) after the marketing machine was thrown behind him. After the hype for him had started.

Yahoo only just made it widely known yesterday with a massive headline. Otherwise, no one really knew. I only knew because I'm a Gaiman freak. S03.gif Its getting sales because its a great book. If King and Gaiman did a collaboration, they would get Joe Hill. And that is the reason for his sales.

A couple of years ago, I had this cat, Katie. Most of the time, she was the best cat you could ever ask for. But when she was about 5 yrs old, she started.. well, she started going nuts. She would freak out and visciously attack at random times. For a while, the incidents were far apart, but then they started getting closer and closer together. We got really scared of her. Spent hundreds of dollars on vet bills trying to find an answer... We had to give her up. I called every no-kill shelter I could find and none could take her. The very last one I called said they could...

About a year ago, I found out that the shelter I gave her to was shut down, the animals seized and the owners charged with 187 counts of animal cruelty. The case is still pending in the courts.

Please, sign this petition for me. I may never know what happened to Katie, but I at least need to know that these evil, evil people have seen justice.

      Hello all,

Below is the link for a petition for the Angel Wings/Harvey case. This has languished in the Roane County court system for almost two years. Now we hear that they are working on a plea bargain. This has all come down to money! What about the animals that suffered and died? Do they get no justice?? The address for the ADA on the case is:

      Patty Murphy

      Kingston, TN 37763
      865/376-2145 x114
      PDMURPHY@TNDAGC.ORG

I have written a letter as well as an email to Ms. Murphy. I encourage everyone to do the same. And please take the time to sign this petition. The animals will be remembered!
      Thank you for your time,
      Kara

Yes, I know these online petitions aren't really legally ... forceful. But they do help prove a point and sometimes, that's all that someone really needs.

    • Random Ranting

      Prittykitty1

Each rant will get its own color, so you can easily tell when I'm moving from one to the next...

Today, at work, a woman came in the store. Not normally suprising, but if you read my other blog, you know that only stupid people are shopping today. Anyway, not the point. She was buying baby shower supplies and when she came to check out, told me her story : She's 28 (my age), married to a 45 year old man (age ain't nothin' but a number, baby!) and planning the baby shower for her step-daughter (who is, by the way, having a girl and HATES pink...lol). This will be the daughter's second baby shower, her mom also threw one. Now, here's the good part : This woman called the bio-mom because she just couldn't understand why they can't just work together.

Can we say "Dr. Phil" anyone? How 'bout "Jerry Springer"? I'm guessing this chick (who looked any number over 28, but no where near any number at or under) was a secretary or hygenist or nurse or... I dunno, pick a cliche. Any cliche. "Why don't you like me? I'm 15 years younger than you and only stole your husband, daughter and life!! I just don't understand!". Geez. (This rant was red, for "The Scarlet Letter")

(This one will be black, for Death. Also, because Shakespeare should never be discussed in anything but black ink) I picked a book for eBay the other day at work, and flipped through it real quick before I took it back. It was "Heartwarming Expressions 3". On one of the earlier pages, under the "angels and fairies" heading, I found this quote, "Good night sweet prince and flights of angels sing thee to thy rest." Anyone know why this is such a wrong line to be in one of these books? So wrong to hang this on a cutsie little sign in a child's bedroom? No? Let me tell you...

I'll go lug out my copy of The Complete Shakespeare Library. Its quite heavy, and I occaisonally get irritated that I don't have smaller copies of my favories... Flip to the tragidies (oh, why aren't they chronological? I want chronological!). Ah, lookie here... Hamlet. Let's flip to the end where everyone is dead. Well, except one or two. And we'll read... Act V, Scene 2. Horatio is speaking. Oh, should tell you... Hamlet was a prince, of Denmark.

Hamlet: O, I die Horatio. This potent poison quite o'er-crows my sprit; I cannot live to hear the news from England; but I do prophesy the election lies on Fortinbras : he has my dying voice; So tell him, with the occupants more or less, which I have solicited. The rest is silence

      [dies]

Horatio : Now cracks a noble heart. Good night, sweet prince; and flights of angels sing thee to thy rest!"

Now, are you gonna hang that one your kids wall? I didn't think so....

As promised, though a little later than intended, I introduce you all to... CHUCK NORRIS!!

He's my latest Build-a-Bear obsession friend. A "Beary Limited Edition", he was only to be on sale from Jan 26 to Feb 2, but sold out the first day. Oy, I was heartbroken. But then... a ray of light... eBay! And only twice the regular price! Steve said I could, but I checked the website one last time.. in case they got more in. Miracle! They did! The second round of "in stock" only lasted a day, also. But I got him. And I love him.

You're a smart group, and i shouldn't have to explain the name choice to you, like I did the folks on MySpace... so have at. Figure it out. S03.gif

Zach Braff? You're placing all your eggs in the Zach Braff basket? I mean, don't get me wrong, he's got that dorky charm and that whole quasi-gay thing in his J.D. character on Scrubs (and we all know chicks dig gay guys), but come on; there are plenty of other cards to trump the Brad K. that aren't Zach Braff.

If you’re into older dudes, Bruce Willis is pretty handsome.
If you’re into action guys, that Vin Disel is really hot.
Or what about chick flick guys? Hugh Grant? He’s pretty smoking.
Not to mention chick-flick-turned-respectable-actor Christian Bale. Those eyes...
Hell, even John C. McGinley on Braff’s own show, all muscularly and such.

But no, you’re into brunette, short, appear-gay-at-first-glance-but-aren’t-gay guys.

Guess I can’t compete with any of those handsome men. smiley2.gif

I highly advise being interested in girls with normal names.

because "Tracie" is such an odd one.

Oh, or because "Christie" is such a normal person. (Ohhhhh, buuuuuurn!)

The two prettiest girls at my store are Jennifer and Jessica.

and where are pictures of those two?

    • Frankfurter

Well Tracie looks like three dudes and an eleven month old child. And, well, I'm not into the Dude on Dude-Dude-Dude-UnderageUnidentifiedGender action.

Daneen, on the other hand looks like she might have potential.

Which one was the one we hated, again?

Due in part to laziness, in part to lack of funds for healthier (but more expensive) foods, and lack of time for healthier food preparation (Sticking a healthy choice dinner in the oven for a half hour hardly counts).

But if my mother needed eye surgery of any kind, I think I'd send her to someone who actually trained to learn how to do it, and knew about diabetes, and would know what to do if the surface of her eye sloughed off and wouldn't heal well, and then got infected, because a lot of diabetics have that problem.

      Thanks for the nightmares.

Sorry, I didn't mean to freak you out. If properly looked after, the chances for you to have your epithelium slough off, or get infected, or any of that scary stuff is very low. VERY LOW.

My point is that if someone is taking care of you that doesn't have the experience of dealing with a diabetic who has had that experience, you could get into pretty bad trouble before they would finally admit defeat and send you to an MD.

With your diabetes, I would definitely say for you to see an MD, preferably a retina specialist. WIth all the research and advances being made in the fight against diabetic eye disease, I feel very optimistic about your vision in the many MANY years to come.

I'm sorry if I scared you. I'm going to go get rid of that paragraph. I don't want to scare anyone. I was just ranting and not thinking. This sometimes happens. smiley7.gif

I heard once that if you spend your life waiting for the exact right moment to do this or that, you'll never do it because you will always find a reason for it to be the wrong time.

That's exactly my thinking, and I said as much to her. I don't want to be paralyzed by all of the little decisions and if that means having to bull ahead sometimes, then so be it. I'm willing to live with the consequences, especially when the deck is stacked so strongly in my favor. smile.png

Yep, that's actually the point I was making. That's a little mini window into how times have changed from when the original was made until the remake (and now).

I agree with you about Wal-mart (though I still despise the company). All they're really guilty of is being very very good at capitalism.

have you ever been into Appalachia? Have ya?

I've been in the backwaters of Alabama, climbed rickety wooden stairs up the river bank to be greeted by a scrawney goat, the tie-up's mascot. That night I played chess with a 300+ individual (whose gender I never discerned), chewing a piece of straw grass (I shit you not), and talking about hunting and fishing. This was in the middle of nowhere. The Alabama river was the main mode of transportation.

A handful of months later, my family drove up through Appalachia in the RV we rented from Ft. Lauderdale back to Massachusetts. I can't remember all of the backwater camps we stayed in and met the craziest (albeit very interesting and very friendly) people.

I've been deep in the back country. I learned a lot in those times. I learned that a lot of the things cosmopolitans say about it are false or massively exaggerated. Still, though, I wouldn't want to live there...

I realize that underage marriage isn't a unique concept. It was the age difference. Doc looked to be in his 50s or 60s whereas Holly (Lulu Mae?) was 20s to early 30s. At least your cousin was of a similar age. The old man marrying the 14 year old? That's creepy even for the period or Appalachia.
