    • Hey all, no real earthquake problems

No earthquake related injuries in my family if any of you were concerned. It was quite a jolt though, I don't remember feeling a tremor that strong that close to me in awhile. I noticed that it was starting up and started darting from room to room spotting things that would fall. My dad luckily had the foresight to grab his new HDTV before it crashed to the floor, illustrating my earlier statements about getting a wall bracket or something to attach it to the console at least. My mom, who had a surgery on her right leg recently and is currently wheelchair bound because of her cast, was sitting on the couch with her cast on the wheelchair as footstool. If the earthquake had been much stronger a lot of collectible keepsakes would have fallen off the shelf directly on to her head before she could move.

The only things that broke were in the kitchen. My dad had a ~24" x 18" certificate from his retirement framed behind glass, on a small shelf. The frame however was not in anyway attached to the wall or anything, it was only held up by a bluebird figurine my sister had given my mom recently for mothers day. So that bird is pretty much irreparably damaged, the glass in the frame can be replaced. The funny thing is my dad had 3 packages of a product called QuakeHold on a table in the living room, all un-opened.

My brother was urinating at home, and became kind of disoriented while doing so. He then realized 15 seconds in to the quake, that he actually hadn't drank any alcohol that day at all. My sister and her husband were bicycling on a trail, they didn't notice the tremor at all. Luckily none of them showed up like 15 minutes early for Easter late lunch because they would have been on the freeway at the time. I didn't check the traffic reports but I imagine at least a few fender benders.

I haven't been around here a lot obviously, I've been trying to clean up my act a bit and find a respectable job. One fell in to my lap while working at Sony, and I'm now a fledgling stereoscopic conversion artist at Legend Films in Del Mar, CA. We take movies that were shot in 2d and restructure them so they appear to be 3d. A lot of people don't like the process, and I've seen errors on the big screen myself, but it's a job I'm not going to pass up regardless of how people feel about. Pretty decent money, with a great amount of overtime potentially on the table.

I just finished my training on Saturday and will start up on 2:30p-11p shifts for 6 a days a week until we move to the new office. Morning shift was like 7a-2:00, but I couldn't handle waking up and fighting traffic if I know I can avoid it and get shit done during the day. When we do get to the new building I'll probably be able to get at least 60 hour weeks once I prove myself. Some of my trainers said they were working 84 hour weeks since they got there. Hopefully all goes well and I just don't succumb to the fear.

Also been trying to not look like a ratty teenager piece of shit in crappy clothes. Finally started replacing my old threads now that I have a stable income. I've been trading out my old shoes as well, and I refitted one pair I had bought recently with some really wide laces and then used them to straight lace them. Bought another pair that's basically a jet black high-top and i bought extra long white round laces for that, then proceeded to something called spider web lacing. It's apparently something that they do on military parade boots, looks pretty sick. I'll have to snap some pics of em. I really think the lacing makes the shoe something completely different than what it was.

I've been picking up a lot of random shit too though.
      I bought a BioShock 2 metal hypodermic syringe that works as a pen;

    • Attending Conference in LA - June 27-28

No new pictures of my sculpture for right now ---

I got my tax return back and I am very happy to say that when I asked Lixie if I could use OUR money, to go to a conference in LA she agreed. I love her very much, best girlfriend ever.

Anyway, so if anyone of you that read this are in the Hollywood area watch out for trouble on the 27th & 28th of June, as I will be attending the Gnomon Workshop LIVE conference. It's a 2 day event were they provide lunch both days and give live demonstrations on the 3d arts during the other times.

Here is a listing of the schedule if you might be interested in attending yourself. Some one's I'm looking forward to are; Clay Concept Sculpting for Film. Creating Characters with Zbrush, Character Animation, and Designing Robots for the Big Screen. All of the classes sound really cool though. I'm going to see if I can't find at least one person I know to go with me, but the tickets cost $275 normal, $175 (before June 1st), and $150 for students. So we'll see who I can rope into it.

"The artists in our line-up for this event have worked on such projects as Avatar, Cloverfield, Iron Man, Transformers, Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland, Tron, Monsters vs. Aliens, Kung Fu Panda, World of Warcraft, Starcraft, Quake 4, Warhammer Online, Warhammers 4000, Bioschock, Hellgate, and Darksiders to name a few."

Regardless though I think it will be a great way to hobknob as there will be representatives from; Nickelodeon, Blizzard, Naughty Dog, NBC Universal, ESPN, Top Cow, Insomniac, Activision, Digital Domain, Gentle Giant and Rhythm and Hues at recruiting booths during the 2 days. So that will be awesome if I can get my gargoyle sculpture finished by then, and have started on my digital version. I think this will finally make my portfolio START looking semi-professional.

I'm really looking forward to it immensely.

    • Sculpting we shall go

      [long journal]

I've been struggling with what I feel is just complete creative shutdown. I can see concepts and shapes in my head very easily, and I can judge what they should look like in regards to their spatial depth in 3d. However, I am terrible at 2d renderings of 3d dimensional forms. So I had decided to kick myself in the rear as far as my goals that I would take a sculpture class at the local community college.

I fucking love it, don't get me wrong the class is pretty retarded but I'm self teaching myself on the side using a DVD series from The Gnomon Workshop. I've been putting a lot of time into it, probably too much as my other class is suffering adversely, but I feel it's a very positive direction none the less.

So anyway the class had us do our faces in a water-based clay, which I didn't spend enough time on to get everything right, but I made a kick ass nose. I decided for my final project to sculpt a gargoyle. I didn't just want to do some boring standard gargoyle though, you know the kind just hunched over and stony. So I've placed the armature in what I consider to be a very alerted pose, as if something has just caught his attention and he's about to lunge in.

I have envisioned him as a member of a small group of gargoyles (yes, like the cartoon. haha) protecting a church somewhere in a Gothic church in old Europe. This guy is a light/fast first-strike attack, he's wings are only capable of gliding short distances and/or catching drafts, not flight. He's also going to have a really heavily swollen chest and upper body in proportion to his legs.

After I'm done with this in both the metal version I'm showing you know and the clay version later, I will move on to trying to resculpt and refine the gargoyle I make in Zbrush a 3d digital sculpting program. This will also be my first attempt, so we'll see how it goes. If it goes well some of the other gargoyles that I had t thought up would be a berzerker unit with overgrown musculature and wings that barely carry him like 3 feet from where he jumped. Also another one I had conceptualized was a much smaller bat-like one that could fly for prolonged periods of time.

Likely if I can compose a scene it will be a Gothic style church in like France or somewhere and some medieval commotion would ensue, then I want to shoot it in Stereoscopic 3d so that I can make it fly off the screen at the viewer. All in all each step will be another great piece for my portfolio, and hopefully I'll get enough work that I never have a chance to finish this.

Anyway, without further ado I present my fledgling attempt at sculpture with my gargoyle statue.

This is just the armature for the sculpture, think of it as the skeleton for the flesh.
Note: His claws will not end up being quite that long, and I've already started sculpting with clay and the tail is now sweeping in the opposite direction as I thought it looked more natural.

      DSC00540_cropped.jpg

His skeleton is primarily made out of aluminum armature wire, as well as some picture framing wire holding some parts together like the wrists. The picture framing wire is also threaded through the wire mesh that makes up the span of his wings at areas I determined as knuckles for the bone.
      DSC00558.jpg

His torso is being gripped and supported by plumbing pipes mounted to a board, the armature has been cemented in with steel-reinforced epoxy.

      DSC00595.jpg

The steel epoxy can also be found at each of the shiny brass parts you see, it is holding the wires into these square fittings so I can disassemble him in various pieces in order to work on specific body parts on their own and/or gain access to areas not normally reachable.

      DSC00513.jpg

My lighting setup; an orange hanging work-light that is positioned to the rear of the turntable, a living room light with 3 bulbs, a steel dish light with a 45 watt halogen bulb (used for warming the clay), a coupled of unknown strength halogen spotlights I borrowed from my neighbor and draped with white paper napkins to dim the light so as the metal wouldn't shine too much. I'm so fucking ghetto-cheap pro, this my 2nd lighting setup for a "photo shoot". Lixie said I was being silly and that I had lit it up like a model, haha.

      DSC00598.jpg

I shot a 360-degree turntable video (spinning it in a circle to see all sides), but I can't get the video off the camera for some reason. Just the photos.

Just FYI: I already started laying clay on it, and took pictures of that too. I'll post those in a later journal, hopefully along with some 360's.

This is not for histrionics or to make a show.

I'm writing this journal because I wanted you all to know how amazing Lixie is and how much I take her for granted. I have kind of lost touch on these boards, and I drop by even less than I used to. As such, I have also been neglecting reading Lixie's journals in a timely fashion.

Earlier this morning we got into an argument over it, she had asked me to read her journal a few times over the course of the week. As it turns out I had not dropped by the site in around 2 weeks. Having skipped coming by during that span of time, I missed seeing a poem she had written for me. So at a loss for me not to have the time away from my video games, she deleted the journal with the poem.

With no other copies, with no other traces of it. The poem is gone, because I neglected it. Intellectual beauty snuffed out due to my indifference to Lixie's thoughts. Having never even seen it before, I was greatly angered without any kind of right. I knew that I had no right and I went off on Lixie anyway.

I don't know how she puts up with me, but I maybe I can find ways of keeping her at my side for quite some time to come. Anyway, I just wanted to let you know how spectacular Lixie really is, and how fortunate I am that she puts up with me.

      I love you Jane.

Some Team Fortress 2 clan pissed me off the other day, they kicked me at one point for talking back to an admin. When I returned 4 more times I kept being more and more offensive until they banned me from their server. Then I went to their forums after creating a artistic masterpiece in photoshop. I posted in every one of their subforums, for a total of 17 posts. They finally banned that user profile, and I returned with another later on... posted it all over again, and again, and again. They banned 5 different accounts of mine until finally they were smart enough to ban my ip. LOL

Gomer, I read every single post you make as if you've just been kicked in the balls by a great rival, and ducked over in pain for a second. Only then you look straight up at the guy that kicked you, utter your post with a clenched jaw in the most terrifying way possible, and dive tackle him as you begin wailing on his face with your fists.

      Its great.
