    • The Human Ascendancy Question P2

President James Wingate, was on his way to the memorial service for Senator Cartwright that was being held on his plantation estate in southern Georgia. Sitting in Air Force One's version of the Oval Office, he finished an interview with one of the few vetted members of the press that had made takeoff and shook his hand. The reporter stood and as the door opened the President spoke to his secret service member.

"Kevin, that'll be all for now. In fact I am not to be disturbed for anything less than a terrorist attack on one of the nation's assets. Thank you, son."

The door closed behind the press hound and the President waited until he heard the reassuring click of the door closing. He pulled out a special laptop and waited as it booted up. The wallpaper was of an all seeing eye. It was the President's link to the rest of the Illuminati. He waited for his transmission to be encrypted and then to connect.

      "Status?"

"Cartwright is dead, confirm, dead. We managed to save his bodyguard though with the help of Sybadyne."

"Cartwright will continue to serve in our anti-cloning interests as a martyr. The guard... he is willing to cooperate with our plans?"

"Well, unless he offs himself first in self disgust, the boy was a Puritan. However if we can convince him like the rest of the public that cloning is the greater threat and that it would be his duty to continue the Senator's campaign... I think he'll work for us just fine."

"Good... In the twentieth century one of America's biggest fears was that some nut case in a third world nation would get a hold of nuclear weapons, and they forgot all about the fear of some cook building a nuke in his garage and the next thing they knew San Diego was just so much glass.
People aren't afraid that some cook in his basement would be able to grow his own army so to get the control of this technology that we need, we'll make them individually frightened. Until the world is ready for full scale, mass production cloning, the Illuminati will be the only organization with such a resource."

"Which would be useful if the cyborgs get out of hand."

"It is unfortunate we could not for see the widespread growth, proliferation, and ease of the cybernetics equation... the genie is out of the proverbial bottle. However they are even more divided and fractured than normal humans. Clones along with the genetic marker that is a byproduct of the cloning procedure are somehow all united in there need and want to futher rights for clones. We do not see the cyborgs becoming a threat in the foreseeable future... at least in anytime before we have a countermeasure in place to check them."

"We've been running things for so long... it's quite odd to hear that a technology has gotten beyond our control."

"Yes... give the normal human a facade of freedom, and they're all the more easier to lead. We will speak to you again soon... Mr. President."

The connection cut off and James Wingate smiled.

The eigth glass of the rehab session exploded in Roy Callahan's grip. He slammed his good hand down against the table. He railed at the nurse.

      "I CAN'T DO IT!"

"Yes, you can try one more time."

"Get the fuck out of here you patronizing bitch."

      "Fine."

His rehab specialist, another cyborg named Lola stood ad gathered up the rest of the glasses. She walked towards the door and then whirled throwing another glass at his head. With a ptink of metal on glass he snatched it in the air. It didn't break.

"That's the amount of force you need to hold a glass without breaking it. Remember that."

Lola left as he stared at his hand dumbfounded. Roy shouted after her before the door closed.

"WHY DIDN'T YOU JUST DO THAT IN THE BEGINNING!"

Roy Callahan re-entered the world the exact opposite way he left it, bathed in life. He didn't open his eyes yet the whitish flare behind his eyelids told him as much. He could hear the steady pulse of machines, the rythmic beeping of vital sign monitoring equipment. And he knew he was at the center of it. in several places along the left side of his body he could feel cold lumps, and his left eye was bandaged. He let his right eye flutter open slowly and tried to turn his head to get a better look at the room. He heard speech and the word "awake" but the rest was lost on him.

Then his eye finally managed to focus on something, it was set right across from him in the wall. It looked like the standard staff of Hermes that was the symbol of the field of medicine. but it wasn't two snakes curled around the winged staff but the double helix of DNA, and one half of the helix looked like it was metal parts. He recognized it from a folder the Senator had when he was researching treatment options for his lungs. It was the emblem of Sybadyne System's Medical Division.

Roy Callahan reached up to remove the bandage from his eye when a clear voice rang out and stopped him.

"I wouldn't mess with that, they managed to save the eye but they had to reconstruct your cheek bone. How are you feeling, son?"

There was only one man other than his father Roy would allow to call him son, without any prior meeting. Roy finally managed to speak as the man sat down by his bedside.

      "Mr. President."

      "Speaking."

      "How bad-"

"Three new ribs, new lung, your left elbow down is completely replaced. The cheekbone of course. And a kidney transplant, it was the only augmentic that wouldn't take."

"I meant how bad is the Senator."

"He's dead son, took a bullet in his forehead... at least he went quick."

"I didn't know this was covered in my benefits packet."

"It's part of a new program where, federal agents injured in the line of duty are repaired with cybernetics. It hasn't yet been approved but... we need you."

      "Sir?"

"With the Senator killed by clones, we've lost a figurehead son. We want you to be the new figurehead..."

"The Senator is now a martyr, negative opinion of clones has shot up in the wake of the assassination... and now the man who was going to die for the Senator has been saved by an alternative to cloning. We want you to be the rallying point for the new campaign against cloning. It's eventual ban was the Senator's goal, we want you to help realize that."

"Sir... I dunno if I can even live with myself right now."

"Survivor's guilt is completely natural, son."

"NO! I'm a puritan... you've turned me into... an abomination. A mockery of God's Will, to further some fucking cause! You prick."

"Wake up, boy! A storm is coming... and the other side is going to be real cavalier about people's lives when they've got an endless supply. You can help us stop this from happening, it's your god damn duty. So, you're staying here until they release you, and then your going to have two weeks of paid vactation time. While you're gone your going to do whatever the fuck you need to do to get right with God, and your self, you're going to pull your self the FUCK together and your going to do your god damn job like a soldier. I know it's been a while since you were one but considered yourself reactivated. There's a war to be fought, and your going to be leading the charge."

The Preisdent loosened his grip on the neck of Roy's hospital gown. He smoothed out the cheap fabric and then stood. He pointed at the waiting nurse and then back at the supine bodyguard.

"Make sure he doesn't do anything stupid to himself... he's got a destiny. We have big things in store for you, Roy Callahan. You won't let us, or the Senator down, I know you wont." The President walked out of Roy Callahan's line of sight but he could still hear him talking about the attending the Senator's wake the next day. Roy choked back bile as it rose in his throat. They had made him a poster boy for a cause he supported but had destroyed a different half of his beliefs to do it. How could he live under the eyes of God with these machines inside him.

Roy Callahan wept. And mourned the passing of a great man as he did.

"Hello, New York, I'm Margaret Gannon, filling in for Jessica May today, the 26th of March 2015. Say hello to Maddy, now say hello to Maddy again. Maddy was barely a year old when she was taken from her family by SIDS. Now Maddy's clone is two years old and healthy as any little girl her age. The scientific and religious communities are in an uproar because the GenTech labs where she was cloned have been silent about this project, many considering this new Maddy is an abomination, however her parents have revealed that this second chance at a life with their daughter has changed their originally anti-cloning minds. We'll bring you more on this story after the break."

"Hello, Miami, this is Douclas Carr for you midday news. Good afternoon, today is the 7th of August, 2023. Big news in the medical sector, finally an alternative to the long waits for vat grown, cloned or donated organs. Sybadyne systems have revealed they have finally overcome the bodie's tendancy to reject foreign materials within the body. and have developed various mechanical replacement for most internal organs and limbs. However the failing point of all these medical alternatives remains the spine. There is as of yet no viable means of replacing or repairing the spinal cord or brain But Sybadyne systems says they're hopeful they will overcome this hurdle by the end of the decade."

"Hello San Diego, I'm Don Mahognay. This is your news for Feubary 16th, 2024. Very soon we will bring you live coverage of Senator and Presidential nominee Jeffery Cartwright as he speaks out today on one of the most contested hot button issues of our century, Cloning. The Senator has been noncomittal on the subject describing is as "A process whose merits, and consequences are yet to be determine" but is projected to be sympathetic, after an accident last year left his throat and lungs chemical burned, cloning may be an alternative to the pain he experinces. The Senator is expected to take the podium momentarily."

      **************************************************************************************************

"Well Senator, I don't see any pro-cloning, pro-cybernetics, or pro-puritan colors out there... just pro-Cartwright signs. I think you'll speech will go over well but I and my men are here for you anyway."

The Senator's voice came out as a rasp. He was capable of imitating his old voice for his public appearances but it was painful to him and in private shy bother.

"How many more times do I have to tell you... call me Jeff, Roy."

      "One more time, Senator."

"Arrogant ass, see if I make you my head of secrity if I'm elected."

"When you're elected, Senator, I really don't think the public has a better choice than you."

"Yes well the public isn't always smart enough to see that. Thank you for the vote of confidence well... let's get this done."

The Senator, Roy Callahan, and three other bodyguards for the Presidential hopeful walked out of the green room that he had been afforded and made the short walk to the stage where he was greeted with a capcony of applause. No one noticed the three not clapping, and their three identical faces. The Senator waved to the crowd and took a sip of water as camera flashes lit the room sporadically. The Senator used his old voice.

"Ladies and Gentleman, I regret to inform you I will be making this speech breif, my physicians have informed that prolonged use of my vocal chords may further the damage to my throat and lungs. And with that bit of information I hope you will take my next words seriously, I am against cloning. I know that cloning has the ability to help save hundreds of thousands every year.

I think the risks are too great... Identity theft is still a problem after three decades... but they steal your name, your number, your money all of which can be restored or replaced. Yes, it takes time and hard work but... it can be done. What a clone of you can do... is steal your face, and that to me is the greater threat,"

The Senator began pointing at random individuals in the crowd to emphasize his points,

"Because I don't want your face to become the face of a serial killer, or your face to be the face of a rapist, or yours the face of a terrorist. I want your face to remain completely and fully yours! Maybe some day we will be able to find a way where we can regulate and enforce restricitions or emplace other measures on clones where there isn't that chance they can steal your face, but until that day I will fight the production of full clones. Tonight I will go home and for the next few days I will spit and cough blood as a result of my lung injuries, and cloned organs present an end to that pain but it is not worth MY FACE!"

The Senator's vocied cracked at it's high point and he withdrew a hankercheif and coughed violently into it. He took a sip of water as he held up the open fabric, freshly stained red. The three identical faces each reached into their pockets.

"This is burden... yes it pains me... but it gives me strength as well. And I will bring that strength with me to the PRESIDENCY!"

Roy looking across the auditorium saw the three identical faces and put it all together. He began running forward.

      "JEFF GET DOWN!"

There was a clatter of gunfire. Roy could feel the heat as multiple rounds ripped into his side and he fell to his side into the senator. Alas his heroics were in vain as one of the bullets found their mark in the center of the senator's forehead. Roy Callahan fell into silent oblivion none the wiser, as police, security moved in and arrested the three clones who made no attempt to resist. One of the bodyguards felt no pulse in the senator's frame and shook his head at the emt on station. Roy's second was already on the phone.

"Yes sir, the senator is dead, and Agent Callahan is gravely injured."

      There was a brief interruption.

"Son, this is the President... there's a chopper en route, make sure your boy gets on it."

    • Cybernetics in writing

      PsykerKaregg

for some reason i've been itching to put cybernetics in writing recently. Maybe it's all of the Command and Conquer time playing as the Brotherhood of Nod, maybe I just like the idea of humans unmodified, and modified, and those that willingly sacrifice their flesh for the perfection of the machine, and those that see their cogs and bolts as a neccesary evil, all in contention with one another. So if you read this journal... give me some ideas for a story

Slayer is what you might call a concept character. He hasn't been assigned an actual part to play yet.
Wraith 1 has one line so far; I don't know if he'll have others. Same's true of the other two Wraith, I suppose, I don't know if they're gonna speak again. Though Spooky probably will have another speaking line, now that I think about it.

Pick any male unassigneds from the list and do their lines... as many as you like. Even go to the novel version and do some random lines from that. I'm still 5-6 scenes from Karegg's appearance, that'll be episode 4 or 5.
