As one of those comfort zone challenges (this one proposed by Molly offline), I was tasked with baking something from scratch. Other than the recipe, I wasn't able to use outside assistance. As many of you know, my cooking ability begins and ends at being able to stir things in boiling water, so, naturally, Gunnar opted to record the trainwreck (which actually didn't turn out too horribly). Here it be:

      Part 1

      Part 2

    • Suggest things

      Quovak

Due to a substantial amount of absurdness that you don't care about, I'm going to be engaged in a challenge to do potentially absurd things outside of my comfort zone. You're probably skeptical of anything happening as a result of this given the state of the last 348.3 projects I've announced, but this might actually happen since I have a real live person who will hopefully yell at me about it in person. She could also throw things at me and maybe even stop giving me boosts to high shelves as a bargaining chip. Anyway, I figure most of the people who passive-agressively dislike me in mildly entertaining ways exist on here, so suggest random stuff I could do that vaguely fits with that bill. I might actually do it and write about it.

    • Does my life exist? Likely no.

What was the last thing I talked about here? Right, Morgan. He's awesome. I also recorded a bunch of footage of him, correctly-spelled Dylan, Moz (real name Elizabeth, and a crazy friend of Dylan's), and me playing Rock Band, but I decided not to actually edit it into a video because of horribly audio quality. The other day, however, it struck me that Morgan mumbling along to Paranoid needs to be heard by everyone and that the existence of the mall adventure video proves I have no standards in the audio department. Thus, you'll probably see that video on Youtube sometime this weekend. There are also pictures of the five of us (those mentioned above plus Grilldog) swimming in Dylan's quite large pool, but I doubt people want to see those.

So, after that I finished school (standardly high grades, 5 on AP Gov test, 2280 SAT score still, love and admiration of all my peers, cold fusion engine still coming along, etc) and continued a long-standing trend of not fulfilling my summer goals (I still don't have my driver's license... Shut up.) Le dog d'grills has an absurd schedule this summer that involves her spending roughly no time in Ashland ever, but I'm still traveling back and forth for reasons. One is that I'm doing summer tutoring for people and making money from that.

I went up to do college touring a few weeks ago and life was fun. Lewis and Clark College is absolutely ridiculous with how far it takes the "Your child is a special wonderful flower that all the mean schools dehumanize by giving grades and standardized tests to" approach. Keep in mind that I'm from Ashland. It takes a lot to set off my cynicism for overly liberal attitudes attitudes. L & C did that somehow. It was impressive.

University of Puget Sound, however, is absolutely fantastic. You don't know much about it, but graduate schools and companies in Washington do. Their fastest growing major is a recently created discipline called International Political Economy, which is basically macroeconomics with a focus on how political trends and current events influence global trade. That basically sounds like the most fascinating thing in the world to study for me, and I know you disagree but chance are you're probably wrong. I'm deleting the rest of this journal because I realize you probably don't care.

I got a 2280 on my SAT. Out of 2400. And I got a perfect 800 on the writing section where a large part of it was my essay that ended up quoting Kierkegaard and Spinoza.

My bi-monthy existential crisis was approaching, and then that happened. I'm pretty satisfied.

On Saturday I took the SAT. Yesterday I took the AP Gov exam. Today I stayed home from school because yesterday I got a crazy and persistent headache that made (and, for that matter, makes) me quite displeased. There's also pain. We looked it up and it's a kind of headache caused by excessive stress and a few other things that fit my actions during the last few days to a T. These last anywhere from 30 minutes to "several days". I hate everything.

On brighter topics, I've started doing some tutoring (my summer job, essentially), there's a moderate (though far from high) chance that I may actually finish a halfway decent piece of writing ever, and I'm now certified to perform first aid. A shame I don't know anything about headaches. I also did pretty well on my SAT (I got to mention Kierkegaard in my essay. Hooray Philosophy classes) and I'm almost positive I got a five on that AP exam. I love being good at tests. I expect statues made in honor of my greatness by next Thursday.

That SAT was at Grants Pass High School, which unfortunately is a really nice high school. It shouldn't be a nice high school. Grants Pass doesn't deserve one that nice. Chad doesn't deserve one that nice. Bitterness ensues.

While I'm being bitter, Grîllschdögg made me go to prom on Saturday (that is, the day I took the SATs. Do you see where stress has come from?). Prom night was actually fairly nice, and we were given free dessert at the Ashland hippy local organic pasta place we had dinner at (the owner's rationale was that we were "so cute" that we deserved it. I'm not complaining). Prom itself, however, was horrible, and I intend on going to dances like that roughly never again. Going back to my house after the fact and dancing to Decemberists songs and Que Sera Sera (the Katamari Damacy "I want to roll you up into my life" one) worked well, though.

Chad, get a worse school. I hate you for life. I also hate Joseph Conrad because The Secret Sharer is a poorly written novella. But mostly Chad.

    • So, I love this. It's fun. I hate it.

I love how I haven't done anything on this site in over a month. Every now and then I actually do come on and study other people's lives, but this sentence trails off here due to a lack of something witty to conclude on.

      Blitzlebenbericht:

Finals were a while ago and went quite well. School has been fairly easy. I'm now in Philosophy and Lit, and it's amazing. Glaucon is useless and should grow a spine. The tournament at PSU was horribly managed, but it's great to have a tournament in the middle of downtown so that actual food can be attained. I've gotten my friends to play awesome video games. I've decided (again) that none of you are my friends. Yay antisocialism. First period outs are amazing; sleep is very nice. I'm not doing this as a bulleted list like I usually do. Today at lunch a surprisingly good rock group called The Veer Union played for about twenty minutes at my school as part of a "Galvanize Random Young People While Being Awesome" tour. They stuck around to talk to everybody, and I now have a signed poster of them next to, bizarrely enough, a Skeletal Lamping print. In two days I leave for a tournament at Stanford, and for the third year in a row it gets to be my slightly melancholic soul-searching tournament. Quoth Grilldog, "I think you're an emotional masochist." Sadly, I can't disagree.

I should probably be doing homework and brooding more around now. I just figure that every now and then when Dillon remembers me I should remind you all of what a horrible detached embodiment of evil I am. Incidentally, the organs of young children are great; you should try them some time.

I'm a follower, not a trendsetter. Until my sextuple-monocle catches on, I'll just do whatever Dillon's doing. Incidentally, I plan on visiting California sometime soon.

Step 1: Put your music player on shuffle.
Step 2: Post the first line from the first 50 songs that play, no matter how embarrassing.
Step 3: Mark the songs when someone guesses both artist and track correctly.
Step 4: Looking them up on Google or any other search engine is CHEATING!
Step 5: If you like the game post your own

I tend to hate Thanksgiving. It's basically a lot of people getting together telling stories I've heard dozens of times before about how cute I was fifteen years ago while pretending to remember a time we gave smallpox to a bunch of people and starting a colony where we now force-feed antibiotics to genetically modified birds and revel in gluttony.

On a completely unrelated note, I'm in the process of writing an ADS about cynicism for debate this year.

Anyway, I actually enjoyed this Thanksgiving to a moderate extent. We went over to the house of some friends of ours in lieu of going up to Portland like we tend to, so we basically just played games (of the non-video type) and told stories I've heard dozens of times about how cute I was fifteen years ago. I also wasn't a vegetarian this Thanksgiving, but they had apparently decided that turkey takes way too long to make, is force-fed too many antibiotics, and denies too many Armenian genocides, so they just made a pork roast instead.

Meanwhile, Dillon misses me, so I guess I'll stick around for a little bit. I'm not really planning on doing anything this weekend besides watching Desert Bus anyway.

My dad's work truck is a Chevrolet some kind of thing and it is by far the smoothest ride of any vehicle ever.

Sadly, this is a small town and if any of his coworkers see him driving his truck when it's not work, it's not good. If I were to drive it, it would be hell on earth.
