Black officer at scholar's home supports arrest

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. (AP) â€' A multiracial group of police officers on Friday stood with the white officer who arrested a prominent black Harvard scholar and asked President Barack Obama and Gov. Deval Patrick to apologize for comments the union leaders called insulting.

Obama said Wednesday that Cambridge police "acted stupidly" during the disorderly conduct arrest of his friend, Henry Louis Gates Jr., in his own home near Harvard University. Gov. Deval Patrick said Gates' arrest was "every black man's nightmare."

Dennis O'Connor, president of the Cambridge Police Superior Officers Association, said Obama's remarks were "misdirected" and the Cambridge police "deeply resent the implication" that race was a factor in the arrest.

"President Obama said the actions of the CPD were stupid and linked the event to the history of racial profiling in America," O'Connor said. "The facts of the case suggested that the president used the right adjective but directed it to the wrong party."

Officers responded to Gates' home on July 16 after a woman called 911 and said she saw two black men with backpacks trying to force open the front door. The woman, Lucia Whalen, has not responded to repeated attempts for comment.

Gates has said he returned from an overseas trip, found the door jammed, and that he and his driver attempted to force it open. Gates went through the back door and was inside the house on the phone with the property's management company when police arrived.

Police said he flew into a verbal rage after Sgt. James Crowley, who is white, asked him to show identification to prove he should be in the home. Police say Gates accused Crowley of racial bias, refused to calm down and was arrested. The charge was dropped Tuesday, but Gates has demanded an apology, calling his arrest a case of racial profiling.

Gates, 58, maintains he turned over identification when asked to do so by the police. He said Crowley arrested him after the professor followed him to the porch, repeatedly demanding the sergeant's name and badge number because he was unhappy over his treatment.

Crowley has refused to apologize, saying he followed protocol.

A black police officer who was at Henry Louis Gates Jr.'s home when the black Harvard scholar was arrested says he fully supports how his white fellow officer handled the situation.

Sgt. Leon Lashley says Gates was probably tired and surprised when Sgt. James Crowley demanded identification from him as officers investigated a report of a burglary. Lashley says Gates' reaction to Crowley was "a little bit stranger than it should have been."

Asked if Gates should have been arrested, Lashley said supported Crowley "100 percent."

Gates has said he was the victim of racial profiling.

President Barack Obama says the officers "acted stupidly." Lashley called Obama's remark "unfortunate" and said he should be allowed to take it back.

I agree with Officer Lashley, the president should come out and apologize for commenting on something he said he knew nothing about. Seems Obama commented out of racial prejudice and total lack of facts. Lets see if he acts as an mature adult and apologizes for his actions and comments.

It is people like Mr. Gates and comments like those of president Obama that keep racial tension stirred up in this society, not the actions of the police who are trying to insure the property and safety of home owners in their jurisdiction.

    • Mass. policeman won't Apologize

      RBuffordTJ
NATICK, Mass. â€" A suburban Boston police sergeant accused of racism after he arrested renowned black scholar Henry Louis Gates Jr. at his home insists he won't apologize over his treatment of the Harvard professor.

Gates has demanded an apology from Sgt. James Crowley, who had responded to the home near Harvard University to investigate a report of a burglary and demanded the scholar show him identification.

Police say the 58-year-old Gates at first refused and then accused the officer of racism.

The Cambridge Police Department recieved a report, by the NEIGHBOR, of two black males, on the porch of a house where they knew the owner to be out of town, one of which WAS USING HIS SHOULDER TO SLAM INTO THE DOOR TO OPEN IT.

The Cambridge Police Department Respond and the UNKNOWN BLACK MALE INSIDE THE HOME, the one using his shoulder to knock the door open, first REFUSES to come out, then REFUSES to show legal Identification, instead presenting his Harvard employee identification card while calling the Officer a racist.

Finally he does produce a valid state issued Driver's License identifying himself as a resident of the home, still literally yelling at the officer about how he was a racist.

He proceeds to scream and yell, outside his home, at the officers, surprise....calling them racists because in his small, narrow minded, warped reality all white police must be racists and hate all blacks. After being told to stop, repeatedly, he continued and was arrested NOT for breaking and entering but for disorderly conduct.

He should be on his knees, apologizing to the Police who responded quickly, identified the unknown man in the unknown residence and then attempted to disengage. He should be apologizing for ever playing the race card when they responded attempting to save HIS home from being possibly broken into and burglarized!

Mr. Gates, you are a hate filled racist and should be fired from Harvard because it is clear you only have one view of the world. You are no better than Mr. Sharpton and Mr. Jackson, both of whom are also hate filled racists who do nothing positive but only stir up hate and discontent in their supporters while claiming to be men of God. Both are liars.

I have been in this officer's shoes, called a racist for daring to ask a minority to comply with basic requests. I have been spit on, attacked and assaulted by complete morons like Mr. Gates who think they are above the law. I have had white men, and women, do the same accusing me of being anything but a human being, accused of being corrupt because I was simply doing my job and enforcing the law.

I have seen your kind Mr. Gates, and it is a nasty, festering boil on a society that truly wants to put all this crap behind them. Good, honest, hard working people who just want to work, get paid and do the best they can with what they are left with when the government rips them off.

Then, as I sit sipping some water, President Obama is asked about this situation and responds with,

      "The Cambridge Police acted stupidly".

You sir, just joined the ranks of Mr. Gates. angry.png

My cousin Steve and I hit the Lake Conway chain here in Orlando yesterday afternoon for some relaxing, testing out a new outboard engine and to harass the fish a little. The result?

New outboard motor would not start, not getting gas to the carb, so we will fix that soon.

Relaxing worked great! Man even with a little rain it was a wonderful day on the lake.

      Harassing the fish? Hmmm....

    • Some news of today....

      RBuffordTJ

First off to catch my eye was....

Obama Administration Redesigns Stimulus Site -- for $18 Million.
Web Site Meant to Show Where Economic Stimulus Money Going

The idea was transparency. If the Obama administration was spending $797 billion as stimulus money to jump-start the economy, end the recession and bring down the unemployment rate, U.S. taxpayers had a right to know where the money was going.

And so the White House started Recovery.gov, a Web site to let people do just that.

But it's a work in progress. The government's General Services Administration quietly put out a release Wednesday night saying the site would be redesigned, pledging $9.5 million now and up to $18 million in the next five years.

Um......does anyone need me to say how stupid this is? Washington as usual. Spend $9 Million dollars on a project they could LITERALLY have farmed out to a high school computer design class, or at the very least a college lab project. Think of how great it would have been for the school, just give the lab $500,000.00 for its hard work and new equipment. It is not rocket science, nor is it military level security. But this new, "Hope & Change" group is showing itself to be dumb as a box of rocks. Where is that new "Sheriff" in the White House. Oh Sheriff Biden...why are you allowing TAX PAYER MONEY to be pissed away like this? Oh thats right, you couldn't remember the web site address anyway! roll.png

      Moving on.....

Sotomayor's Pledges 'Fidelity to the Law'

After weeks of public silence, Judge Sonia Sotomayor used the opening statement of her Supreme Court confirmation hearing today to tell members of the Senate Judiciary committee and some skeptical Republicans that she will not let her personal beliefs get in the way of her impartiality.

"In the past month," she said, "senators have asked me about my judicial philosophy. Simple: fidelity to the law. The task of a judge is not to make the law -- it is to apply the law." She has explained in the past how her life experience as a Hispanic female makes her better (suited) than any white man to do this job, not mentioning that her judgments are routinely overruled by higher courts due to her poor decision making abilities and prejudicial backing of minorities in all situations regardless of the law.

In a closely related situation, Satan, the prince of darkness and being who brought sin to mankind in an attempt to overthrow God's government by saying he was much better suited to govern it, pledged to never lie again. He went on to offer the White House Press Corp fresh picked fruit which they ate immediately and reported was the best ever and should be handed to every child in the world at US tax payer expense.

I'm going to go see if there is something that will stop this blood from quirting from my eyes now.

Yeah, that is understandable, but is there the possibility you could find a place cheap enough for the family to come to for that time too, home school the kids, be with them at night and weekends.

I doubt it... You work 12 hours a day, 6 days a week... So I would never see them anyway. Best to leave the family home, and just go get'r done.

I don't even know if the company will have a spot for me yet anyway? I'm calling on a logging job tomorrow... I might go work in the woods instead?

I am currently sitting in Alabama waiting to hook up with armeav8r and fnb**** in a little while. If you come to the East coast bring the kids and wife with ya. What is the job possibility?

Maybe God is trying to get you out this way for a little while.

The job would be expanding land fills in NH, Vermont, etc... $1,000 a week Per Diem, they pay for motel, and a decent wage... You work 5-6 months straight, and make around $40,000... Then you get max unemployment for the rest of the year... about $1,600 a month.

The heart breaker is being away for half a year. smiley2.gif
