      Untitled Story Part II

      ____________________________________________________________

Alex became aware of the noises behind him as he emerged from his thoughts. He realized he was quickly approaching the end of the field right to a sharp drop off. It was the end of the plateau. His mind was racing trying to consider his options. He knew that the things pursuing him would not spare him. Not after what he saw as he escaped the fate of the rest of his townspeople. Encouraged by adrenaline and fear he began the treacherous descent. As Alex was trying to find foot holes he felt he might have made a huge mistake. He was having great difficulty making his way down the sheer wall. Every time he tried to put weight on his feet the rocks of the cliff would break away. Alex was starting to sob as he hung less than three feet down the two hundred foot drop. He looked down but could not see anything except the reflection of the moon’s light off of the water below. Alex continued to struggle and traverse his way down the rock wall when he could hear humming and clicking sounds coming from above him. The sounds were followed by a pause and a high-pitched tone along with some chirping noises. He hoped he had made his way down far enough not to be noticed. It was very dark out so Alex attempted to flatten his body against the cliff as much as he could. He kept his head down giving whatever it was up there less features to see. As he held on with all of his strength trying to keep as quiet as he could he began to squeeze his eyes shut as tight as possible. All he could see was the gore he left behind in his town.

Alex was laying face down on his bed after he was berated by his mother and sent to his room. He heard this deafening boom from outside. The house started to vibrate violently after the loud boom. He jumped out of his bed and ran for his bedroom door. Alex tried to open the door but found that it was stuck. He was pounding on the door as the screaming from outside started. Alex stopped banging on the door and went to his window. He was astonished as he peered out. There were people running all about in a panic. It was then that the sky started to darken and Alex looked up and could not believe his eyes. He watched as directly above the center of the small town a dark spot was pushing its way through the atmosphere. There were clouds forming around the object that seemed to be rolling along the spherical shape. There were also electrical discharges visible in the clouds. Slowly this object ……. this thing pushed slowly downward towards the center of the town. Alex ran back to his bedroom door and tried to open it with a new sense of urgency. The house started vibrating more ferociously and his bedroom window exploded.

Alex started pounding on the door harder. He was yelling for his mother and father. “MOMMY …….. DAD ….. Please let me out!” He was becoming frantic. “Please mommy help me.”

As he put his ear on the door he could not hear anything coming from the other side. Suddenly the walls began to convulse. Alex turned around and ran for the window. He was trying to avoid being pelted by all of the things he had on his walls and hanging from his ceiling. Before he made it to the window he was struck and knocked down by a model jet fighter that was suspended in flight from his ceiling. Alex quickly bounded to his feet and dashed for the window. He climbed out of the void in the wall that was once his window and turned his eyes upward.

This is my second day of @MissZahrah 's writing project. I am going to begin a story and try to keep it going as she is. I do not have a title for it yet.

      _________________________________________________________________________________

He was running through the field as fast as he could. At ten years old he was afraid it would not be fast enough. Alex did not know what was going on but he knew he could not stay there.

Just this morning Alex was in his town playing with his friends. He went home to find his father in a drunken rage. His mother was sitting on the edge of the coffee table crying while holding her face in her hand. Alex made it across the threshold before he froze in fear.

"Come here you little bastard." Duncan yelled at his son.

Alex began to walk over to his father slowly. He knew better than to question his father. Alex also learned a harsh lesson about talking back. He approached his father with his head bowed in supplication.

"Why the hell are you out there fucking around with your worthless friends?" His father vociferated. "There is stuff you need to get done you lazy shit." He exclaimed drunkenly.

Alex stood there quietly waiting for the inevitable with tears in his eyes.

"Look at you standing there like a trembling little fag. You ain't worth the clothes I put on your back."

"Your father was never like this before you Alex!" His mother cried out. "You have ruined everything."

Alex began to sob uncontrollably as his mother degraded him. "But mom I......" Duncan backhanded Alex as he tried to speak up. Alex went sprawling on the living room floor.

"I've told you before about your back talk. You see Linda you let this little shit get away with too much."

Alex was trying to regain his footing when his father lifted him up by his belt and pushed him over to his mother.

As Alex landed at his mother's feet, she looked down at him and scoffed. "Alex, why don't you make yourself useful and go clean your room."

Alex went into his room and closed the door behind him. The yelling from the living room continued as the door closed behind him.

Well, I was "offline" for about 5 months or so. I have tried to make some changes since I have been gone. The most important is my health. I am changing my lifestyle and eating habits. There are a lot of things I am going to miss eating but I want to live for a while so it is time to get right with myself. I began on April 1st, cruel joke to my body I am going to give you cake ... APRIL FOOLS, anyhow I began to monitor my caloric intake as well as changing the food choices I was making. I have lost 60 pounds since April 1st and I am still going. I would like to lose another 70 pounds. I have moments of weakness and even stumble but this is the longest I have ever gone with out giving up. I am proud of myself and cannot wait to see my goal.

I was reading a journal entry by MissZahrah in which she has challenged herself to write daily. I really enjoy writing and do not do it often enough. Well, she invited others to join her and I think I should do that. I do not believe I can meet the lofty goal of 1000 words per day she set for herself but I am going to post something creative daily (or do my damnedest to). With that being said, today I was thinking about how lucky I am to have some of the people in my life that I do so I wrote a poem about it. Here it is.

      _______________________________________________________

There are friends in your life that always come through

When times are good or bad they're always there for you

If you are truly fortunate one stands above the rest

A special person in your life that you can call the best

I know that I have found in you a person I can call a friend

A confidante I can trust completely from now until the end

I will do my best to treat you right and always make you smile

Try my hardest to be there for you and go the extra mile

Please believe I am grateful and appreciate all you do

I only hope that I can be as good a friend to you.

      _______________________________________________________

Well, that is all for now. Hope everyone has a great day.

    • Sometimes it is good to be a clown

I just wanted to share a conversation I just had with the owner of the company I work for.

      Boss: very funny
      Alan: YES!
      Alan: FTW
      Boss: trust me
Boss: your comedic genius is not lost
      Boss: very much appreciated
      Alan: lol
Alan: I am the company clown
Alan: I just need to learn to do balloon animals
      Boss: not clown
      Boss: jester, maybe
      Alan: Main Entry:
      jester '‚[jes-ter] Show IPA
      Part of Speech: noun
Definition: person who jokes, plays jokes
Synonyms: actor, antic, banterer, buffoon, card*, clown, comedian, comic, cutup, droll, fool, harlequin, humorist, japer, joker, jokester, larker, life of the party, madcap, pantaloon, practical joker, prankster, quipster, standup comic, trickster, wag, wisecracker, wit
      Boss: yes
Alan: notice the word clown in Synonyms
      Boss: not the same
Alan: according to Webster it is
Boss: your new nickname will be Pocket
      Alan: Pocket?
      Boss: oh yes
      Alan: why would that be
      Boss: you be Pocket
Boss: and I will be Drool
      Alan: lol

For those unfamiliar with the Pocket and Drool reference, they are characters from a Christopher Moore novel titled "Fool". Pocket is the King's jester and Drool is his dimwitted apprentice. I thought it was funny and wanted to share it with you.

Well, I have been gone for quite some time. I know I have missed a lot and I have to deal with that. I have had so much going on since the last time I was able to post on RT. Hopefully I will be able to catch up with everyone as quickly as I can. I am going to try and get back in to the swing of things.

Well, in this case, the novel is 'written'... but it's going to require massive revisions and a fair chunk of addition. Well, that, and I'm trying to write another book as well, so between the two, I really need to find a better way to tap my creative juice before it's squeezed out.

Believe me I understand. People used to say all the time how imaginative I was. I have become such a problem solver that it has drained most of my creativity on unworthy things.

I'll respond with pretty much what I told her. Even after 30 years of being a shameless sci-fi glutton, I see new paths being tread all the time in sci-fi - mostly in literature. And what I saw in tonight's episode was a straight lift to the point that I considered it an amusing sendup, not simply a coincidental 'thing that's been done before'.

I also don't consider RvB sci-fi. I consider it a pop-culture sendup. It just happens to be based extremely loosely on a sci-fi video game, and quite nearly the entire story has been a sendup of other works. I think it's pretty deliberate. I don't fault them for this. It was just worth pointing out when I saw such an obvious reference tonight. smiley1.gif
