I played BlazBlue: Calamity Trigger for the first time a few days ago. It is fucking awesome, I love it, etc. It's basically just Guilty Gear with new characters and stuff but that works for me. I also greatly appreciated them naming a character after me, hurr hurr. My only complaint right now is that V-13 is cheap as hell. That said, as soon as I get half-way decent with her I likely won't be complaining much (as was the case with Eddie in #Reload -- the characters aren't too similar stylistically, just similarly unbalanced). I might write more about the game when I get to play it again. I only just skimmed the surface of it; tried out about 1/3rd of the characters in versus and gunned through arcade mode with Ragna and Noel.

My brother got himself one of those X-bricks so he could play a butt-load of Tales of Vesperia while his school's out. When I get myself a new job, I think I might pick up that Ninja Gaiden game which I've been wanting to try for a while.

I'd write more here but there really isn't much else going on, so I'm just gonna go listen to Hanging in the Balance again.

As of recently, my senior project is a solo project. I really should have done this in the first place. :M

Anyway, just pointing out that I am in fact still back. I just had way too much trouble getting work done in my group and that ended up causing me problems.
Oh, and my car died. I'm probably just going to donate it to avoid much hassle, but I really should get the stereo equipment out. I'll probably leave the front speakers in because I'll basically have to dismantle the entire front end of the vehicle to get them, but the actual stereo and the back speakers shouldn't be much trouble. I just have to get the time to do it. That, and I have to actually find a new car. Eh.

      Recently ordered this stuff:
      www.nwnprod.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=24&products_id=4180
      www.nwnprod.com/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=3642
      www.nwnprod.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=28&products_id=4209
      www.nwnprod.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=24&products_id=4019

Most of these I'm going into blind; I've never heard Horrid or Ares Kingdom, Ribspreader is good but I've never heard this one, etc. but I have listened to Dead Congregation and they are FUCKING AWESOME. If you like Diabolical Conquest, you will probably like Graves of the Archangels too and you should get it because it's only like five bucks there!

I also finally ordered a copy of Guilty Gear X2 for the PC. eBay manages to pay off once again. 30 bucks is a bit more than I like to spend on PC ports of arcade games but I've heard good things about the seller from a friend of mine and it has been a pain seeing this thing out of stock everywhere.

I guess I'm back. I'd been taking time off the internet for the past few months trying to get more work done. However, that hasn't worked too well since I have to use the internet for schoolwork. Still, I did manage to get more work done, so there's that. Only a couple months left of school and I am done. Then I get to pay off all of my loans, hooray!

Otherwise, I am feeling fine and relaxed. I just got over being kinda sick and managed to finish some stupid fucking dental work. I hate stupid fucking dental work. The only reason I'm feeling fine and relaxed (also nostalgic) is because of this: www.wushuplaya.com/boundtogether/

I like Earthbound a lot and this is making me want to play through the game again. I probably won't though 'cos it takes forever. Anyway, I'd wholeheartedly recommend this thing, but I'm only up to the ninth track (DRUG STORE) and to be honest I just don't like to make wholehearted recommendations that much.

I stole a performance of Bela Bartok's "The Miraculous Mandarin" a few days ago and now there's a problem. I can't listen to the files because I made the names longer than the character limit and I can't figure out how to rename them back so that they'll work.

      Some screenshots to help illustrate:

Files with names that are too long
      img371.imageshack.us/img371/1007/ss2jh4.png
Files with names that are NOT too long
      img185.imageshack.us/my.php?image=ss1vs4.png

Also, I don't think it helps much, but when I mouse over the files with the extra-long names, they don't show the whole file-name so it's also missing the extension.

Anyone have any ideas on how to fix this? I'm running XP, by the way.

Edit: Figured it out. I just had to rename the folder it was in and things started working just peachy.

I've been a bit busy for the past couple days with work and the like. My computer stopped serving internet and I figured out today that my firewall (Zone Alarm) had been causing the trouble, so I'm back in the market for a firewall. I'm gonna try this one out, I'll tell you what I think. Any other suggestions would be welcome.

I saw a movie recently as well. Wall-E. Perhaps you have heard of it. In case you might be wondering, I enjoyed it. I really liked how there wasn't much chatter, which let the images and sounds to create an overall subtle, "wholesome" atmosphere; it's relaxing and it really sets the mind at ease nicely. It's also the sort of thing that can get interrupted easily when everyone's yapping away and it was nice to see the film maker's way of getting around it. In fact, I so thoroughly enjoyed the movie that I downloaded a demo of the game that they made for it. I really should have known better.

Since I'm in sort of a movie mood right now, I might go see that Hellboy 2 movie sometime this week. I thought the first one was cool if a bit inconsistent and the trailer had a very "interesting" looking character in it to boot -- you probably know which one I'm talking about, but either way I think he's supposed to be the Angel of Death (have to do it in proper case, SLAYER \m/).

In other journal-filler-space, I finished my mid-term project before the break a few weeks back. I don't have the actual game at my finger tips (I think the team wanted to do more with it, but our communication hasn't been that great lately) though I do have this:
      www.sendspace.com/file/529ypn
Music that I collaborated with my brother on for the game. We were really creative with the name, you see (the game's called "Almost There!"). Anyway, tell me what you think of it. It was sort of influenced by some Popol Vuh that I was listening to at the time, so it might sound a bit familiar.

Lastly, I'm really excited about "this thing". For those of you with reservations about clicking links that I might post, the gist of the article is that CD Projekt (the guys who made The Witcher) have announced "this thing" called Good Old Games, which will make a bunch of old PC games available through online distribution - no DRM and pretty cheap (they're saying six to ten dollars!) Also, they're making sure that they'll run on XP and Vista through modifications to the source code and brand new installers. You know, as opposed to what the folks at GameTap do. Anyways, I've been meaning to try out Jagged Alliance 2 and some of the Lucas Arts games I missed, so "this (thing)" seems like a good opportunity to play catch up.

You just might find the Good Old Games official internet site here: www.gog.com/en/intro

Just in case you guys were interested, I did in fact get my wisdom teeth out recently. Not on Monday (as planned) but on Wednesday and I have a follow-up this coming Wednesday. Better late-than-never, I guess. No complications either; that was nice. The only real inconvenience was the "nothing but soup for three days" thing. It was kind of nice to be able to take a break from things, even though I didn't, but the point is that the opportunity was available.

I think I'll go back to metal before I start rambling again. I'm still on painkillers, so I'm a bit funny in the head.

I just got back from vacation on Saturday. It was fun; the whole family and I (it somehow turned into some sort of big reunion) took a few days to rent some condos somewhere a bit south of Daytona Beach. Neat place, I have the sunburns to prove it (though they've subsided a bit now)! After that, we just spent two days at my dad's sister's house getting killed by our cousins in Smash Bros. Melee and starting a run-through of Tales of Symphonia (I'll never quite understand how that game is so much fun with those fellers...). I also got a chance to try out Metroid Prime 3 and that game might become the sole reason for me to get a Nintendo Wii -- fuck, that game starts out awesome! Overall, it was a pretty killer trip which also gave me the chance to read more Robert E. Howard stuff.

Another nice event that occurred recently was this whole nonsense with my wisdom teeth. I probably should have gotten them out about two years ago, but they weren't bothering me at the time so I didn't see the necessity of it. To be honest, they still don't bother me but now they're completely impacted (woohoo!) and messing up all that orthodontic work I had going three or four years ago. The best part of all this was that I was supposed to get the removal done yesterday - uh uh, not the case. The insurance company decided that they couldn't read the x-rays -- completely ridiculous, I looked at them myself -- and wouldn't pay the $1400 that they're supposed to cover. Now it's all a matter of trying to "convince them" to "stop being a bunch of jew-fags".

School also kind of sucks to be honest. I get less interested in making games every day - the medium just seems to get less and less appealing. I've thought about ways around that as in making simulations for police or the military as well as educational software. I've also been thinking about picking something else up, but I'd much prefer to finish my degree at DeVry first (those credits DO NOT transfer; if you're really considering going to that school, make sure you're 100% on what you want to do).

Yes, my life is always so exciting. That is probably why I have SLAYER.

So I think the board is actually working for me now since I can actually access more than one thread before my browser times out. Neat.

I'm thinking that it might have just been a problem with the router and now it's magically fixed. Mind you, it's not that I have anything tangible like "evidence" for this; it's more along the lines of me blaming everything I can on this damn thing.

Otherwise, I'm just swell. I'm listening to a song about someone being murdered in a forest (awesome!) and I'm also trying to forget that I really should be sleeping right now since it's half-past-four in the morning.

Edit: Threw in a youtube link to said song since I know you're all so interested! It's a live version and sounds kinda shitty, but you can kind of get an idea of what's going on.

I'm re-listening to the Voivod records I downloaded ages ago. I didn't like these albums at first, but I really enjoy them now, especially Dimension Hatross. There's almost a level of narrative direction to their music that can also be found in classic Destruction, Celtic Frost, Slayer and Anacrusis; it's something you don't get very often in thrash metal and it's refreshing even though it's not exactly something new (Anacrusis' Suffering Hour actually came out after Hatross!)

School's going too slowly and too fast at the same time; I wish I could explain it, but admittedly I don't really feel like doing that anyway. I've been thinking about branching out into something that isn't game programming, but I just started writing the design document for a solo project so that will probably be a while.

However, I won't be doing any of that right now because I did that all of last week and I feel more akin to setting some cultists on fire. I swear, that flare gun never gets old.

I generally don't do this sort of thing, but I thought some of you might like to know that the death metal legends Asphyx have reformed. I am a bit suspicious about the validity of this news item as all I'm going off of is a Myspace page that apparently has a new song but I can never get that thing to play so I guess I'll just have to wait for a proper mp3 or something. Or they could send me their next CD; that would be cool too.

Anyway here's a link to that Myspace: www.myspace.com/officialasphyx

Oh, and Martin van Drunen is back in the band too, so that's also good.

My computer already has some SecuROM plaguing it from Crysis/Crysis Warhead, Red Alert 3 and Dead Space, but really it hasn't affected me at all.

Also, it's pretty annoying to see so many votes tallied up to Fallout 3, which is pretty much, imo, Oblivion With Guns.

      Much longer than the original.
Each race has territory, and the idea is to attack enemy territory and conquer it.
There are 31 territories to conquer, so you do the maths.
Plus you've got defening and reconquering territories, and special missions for attacking an enemy stronghold and capturing warp gates between the various planets and moons.

So, yeah, it'll last you a while.

It's a really enjoyable game, I like it quite a bit. The dialog is very clever too, as are a majority of the characters. I really should get a proper version of it; the only games I could get to run properly on Gamefap were Ghosts 'n Goblins and Metal Slug.

It's totally worth the $15 you'll spend getting it on PS2, PC or X-Box, if not just a little bit more. It's a short game, unfortunately, but it's way fun. Tim Schafer is also going to do Brutal Legend, which I'm pretty excited for as well.

OMG = you're online and not dead..

    • acdcfanbill

yea, as long as you change the .ape extension to .wav in the .cue file, theres a few progs that will automatically split it up for you, EAC for sure.

    • acdcfanbill

so you installed the monkey's audio program right, just start it up, and drop in the .ape files you want to decompress, then on the top left button, hit the down arrow and select decompress, then hit the button, and it should spit out .wav files in whatever directory the .ape files are stored in.

What do I use for conversions? well, that really depends. Generally, if I'm ripping a CD to mp3 files, i'll use EAC with LAME mp3 encoder. sometimes I use CDex too, which basically does the same thing, but is simpler for most people, it just lacks some of the precision, but that generally isn't necessary. Any other time I've messed with audio, it's generally been AC-3 or something, and I'll just use some fancy program like Soundforge or Premier. Converting between lossy formats is generally a big no no and invariably nets you poor results, so the only conversion i do is lossless to lossy, and i always use VBR mp3 with an average bitrate of at least 192 to archive my albums. Hopefully that helps answer your question some.

The drummer wasn´t present when the song was written and that´s the reason there are no drums. Most of my demo songs, don´t have drums and it´s only because i find it too troublesome to write the drum line with a drum machine just to have the drummer change it later.

Your opinion was great, thanks by the way.

The best way is to download Speedfan and check the temperatures of the CPU. Power supplies are trickier to prove they are the cause, though, and i don't know of a way to check them. When you get Speedfan, get a screenshot of it running and let me know. Would also be helpful if you downloaded CPU-Z, ran it with Speedfan and SS'd them next to each other.
