    • Look Ma, I'm journalin'!

      Ram7824

I thought a recap of this week would make a good journal to get back into the habit of posting here. I'm really taking this whole return to the RT community seriously; I swear.

I have some lofty ambitions to write professionally. It's not something I've ever really considered to be real possibility if I'm honest. I really love the written word, and how it can communicate an entire of gamut of emotion, or an encyclopaedia of information. But there's a big difference between loving something and actually creating something. I've just never thought my writing was that good.

Last month a professor mentioned in passing that she is responsible for sourcing book reviews for an academic journal. She said that anyone willing to write a piece demonstrating their writing skill could submit a piece to her, but that since it's a professional journal we shouldn't be disheartened if it's not up to scratch. I wrote a book review, handed it to her, and the next day she emailed letting me know I'd been accepted to write reviews for a serious academic journal.

I still can't believe it. She says she's never had an undergraduate write well enough for this job before, which makes me feel silly for having so little confidence in myself. I am pretty damn stoked. I was smiling all day. My cheeks are still sore; it was horrible.

Not only that but my third year project was accepted, and my supervisor thinks I could get it published if I really work on it.

It's like this entire week has come together to say "Hey, you're not bad. Keep working on it.".

      I'm pretty happy.

Usually I'm not one to big up my own achievements at all, I'd rather just keep my head down and do my own thing. But this has really meant a lot to me, and it has given me something to write a journal entry about. I promise I'll be back to grumpily complaining about the weather next time. (It's supposed to start snowing this weekend, which means the UK will ground to a halt.)

I hope you've all had a great week too.

      R.

I've realised how great this community is recently, what with the fantastic Extra Life result and all. I've also realised how greatly I've neglected this account.

The majority of friends I made here years ago when I was last active have seemingly also disappeared, which is a weird experience for someone whose never moved away from a community of people before and has never drifted away from an entire group of people all at once.

I'm going to tidy up this account, remove the lingerings of a younger (and kind of dick-ish and juvenile) self, and try and get more active with this fantastic community.

Hello again, Rooster Teeth, I'm Rory and I'm hopefully back for good.

    • Raining in Albion

      Ram7824

I like the rain, I want to make this very clear from the beginning of this post. I LIKE THE RAIN.
What I don't like is its ability to both figuratively and literally rain on my parade. Or garden party, or group meet up at the park.

I live in North West England, so I'm pretty used to rain. It happens. The evolutionary perogative of our species not being soluble, means we can carry on in a bit of rain. And this English Summer has been a prime example of this. We have maybe a week of nice weather before it rains for a fortnight.

What has made me so annoyed by this particular fortnight of rain is its ability to be completely unpredictable. It may look like the fortnight - here on referred to as the Melancholy 14 - is over. I can wake up to beaming sunshine, and an almost cloudless sky punctured by listless airplanes drifting lazily through the sea of blue. I may decide to do something with friends, maybe go on some form of an outside adventure. We may even arrive at the destination for said adventure, then who should arrive but the Melancholy 14.

In short, since NASA is giving up on the exploration of space, maybe they should look into the ability of rain clouds to move with such haste that they break all laws of physics and etiquette.

I know I'm moaning, and that I should be positive. So I shall forget that today the Melancholy 14 has hit again, and try and look on the bright side. I can stay in all day and browse the Web. Maybe play some Xbox.

Like I said, I like the rain.

    • A mystical adventure....

      Ram7824

...to my friends dining room table. Or, my first game of Dungeons and Dragons. As I may well have previously mentioned, I recently bought the presentation set of rulebooks and a set of dice in order to start a DnD game with a couple of friends.

It also turns out that Her Majesty's Royal Postal Service are more judgmental than I had originally believed. The postman gave me the most judging look I've ever recieved as I was signing for the delivery. The way he was looking at me, you would have thought the box said "The tongues of one thousand tortured puppies", not "Dungeons and Dragons". But its ok, he doesn't have the legs for shorts. He looks like a Chickotaur - the suprisingly recognisable offspring of a human and a chicken. In fact, he looks like a scrawny Chickotaur that will inevitably be "sent to live on a farm" any day now by the parents of the Chickotaurs young master.

Where was I, oh Dungeons and Dragons. I'm having a great time so far. I'm playing a level 4 war wizard named The Great and Powerful Gregg - thusly named after his stage persona - who is pretty great. There is something suprisingly therapeutic about setting a group of kobolds a-flaming sunder.

I'm also guessing the others are having fun too. We spent all night playing, choosing to seep deeper into the campaign rather than sleep. The others play as a elven cleric and elven ranger. It's really interesting learning all the nuances of gameplay as well as figuring out the narrative and the creative little sparks our DM throws in. (I spent 2 hours trying to open an old - deeply magical - amulet that I recovered from a slain enemy. I tried to crack it open with shear force, melt the rust with a Blacksmith's solvent, and finally resulted to just leaving it be and wearing it after the Blacksmith broke his chisel trying to pry it open.)

I'm also enjoying that it's making me think differently too, especially when my brain could be stagnating during the Summer Break. Hopefully it'll make me think a little more creatively. For example, if I ever DM, the Chickotaur will most definitely make an appearance.

    • Theres no FUN in EXAMINATION.

      Ram7824

Unless you have difficulty spelling. Or are just a literary rebel.

So the final week of college (UK) exams are well and truly upon me. I have bravely, if I do say so myself, faced off against the terrors of Maths X 3, and Biology X 1. This leaves 2 Psychology exams and one final Maths exam and then I'm off to University.

Which is not at ALL daunting. But it should also be exciting. The fact that I could be either studying at a University literally 5 miles away, or studying in another city (depending on exam results) also throws the entire process up in the air.

But who needs to worry, when you're ordering D&D book right? They should arrive in a week-ish. I reckon that I am yet to reach my Nerdom threshold, and should therefore adventure into the realm of roleplaying. My first reason for playing is to just have fun with friends. My secret second reason is that it'll force me to be considerably more creative - something that has taken a backburner to my studies in the last year and a half. As it turns out, there isn't much to be creative about when you're studying Biology, Chemistry, Maths and Psychology. Usually the most adventure I get in a day is deciding what kind of testtube to use. Riveting.

So thats Rorys life this week. I am looking forward to the end of exams, a long summer (with hopefully a lot of sunshine!) and the new season of RVB. It should be fun, although I fear my Sponsorship won't last much longer. I'll endevour to place this onto my to do list.
      Thanks Internet!
      Rory :)

PS Did you know that Xan is short for Alexander? It had never dawned on me. I never realised that I had such a cool middle name. Well, sort of.

    • The minutia of life is interesting...

      Ram7824

What is not interesting is the fact I've fallen down the stairs twice this month already. I have a black-ish eye, and it's my 18th birthday on Sunday. I may be forced to punch the other eye and just dress up as a panda. "Oh, you didn't hear about the fancy dress. Yeah, it's a 'near extinction' theme.".

I've also just realised that I just used the word 'minutia' in the title of this blog. I'm confident that I've never used this word in a blog before. Not that I want a medal or anything. I'm just saying, it's interesting.

Much like the fact that I can't seem to walk downstairs without cracking my face on a bannister.

And now I'm back to the original point of the blog, I'm accident prone. See, it's all circular.

An almost 18 year old, Rory smiley0.gifsmiley9.gif

And I think Jeff Williams just musically blew his load in my ears. Wow. Track 8, suitably entitled Red Vs Blue, is absolutely amazing!

If the endorsement of a random teenaged stranger on the internet is worth anything, I would highly suggest buying it!

Contrary to what you might have assumed from looking at this blog.

Also, go visit my friends website. I'm even writing for it. Albeit, not as frequently as I'd like. Maybe I shouldn't leave the majority of my college work for the the weekend before I go back.

Hey, did you hear already about tonights Monday night lunar eclipse, it is supposed to be a full eclipse of the moon, I am not totally sure when it is supposed to be visible for all of us here in the central time zone, but I think it is supposed to begin around 11pm "approx" first the moon will turn sort of orange and then go black, and it will be a long time before it comes back out again, it will be cool.

info about the eclipse can eb read here...http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/December_2010_lunar_eclipse

Nah, that part wasn't so bad actually, now when my skin started growing into the bandage because I refused to take it off, THAT was a little on the painful side. But, I had to rip it off otherwise I wouldn't get my ninja turtle sandals. :(

    • MHTLuca

Yeah, I've had a few situations where I was unfortunate enough to smell burning flesh, the most memorable being when I leaned on the exhaust of a semi truck when I was little while it was running. Apparently it killed the skin so fast my nerves didn't have time to scream in pain, they just plain died, and my arm was fused to the muffler. ahahaha

    • MHTLuca

True, but the smell of burning flesh is pretty unpleasant.

I might sell it on eBay for £50 or something, someone will want to buy it, because some ultra nerds know how to fix the RROD themselves.
