    • Time Flies When You Forget Your Password

So I was watching Season 1 on Netflix the other day and thought to myself, "Self, we haven't logged into RvB in awhile." So I went home, sat down, and realized that it's been so long, in fact, that this login hasn't caught up to my current password convention.

Anyway, I don't imagine many people are looking at this little corner of the internet anymore, but I figured I'd fill in some blanks anyway. First and foremost, I'm going to be going on an extended active duty stint here in about a week and a half. Between my Senior Enlisted Advisor's... encouragement and a fair bit of alcohol, I wound up volunteering for mobilization. I've got a week for paperwork, three weeks to learn how to not blow my own head off with an M4, and then it's 8 months in the Gulf. I should have regular internet, so it'll be a good time to catch up on things.

Speaking of getting behind, I like to blame towing for that one. I spent 9 months out of the last 13 working for a rather small towing operation. And by "small," I mean "two drivers." Net effect: I got every other weekend off (with Friday/Monday off around the work weekends), but the only way to avoid getting called in on my days off was to be actively drunk. Because I wasn't willing to give my entire soul to the business, the owner wanted me gone, and as soon as I found a better job, I left.

Other than that, not much else to tell. Ex is getting better about leaving me alone; I've been taking less of her shit, and I think she's realizing that I'm not going to play her games. May still need to have a paternity test performed when I get back to the States, but the more I see of this kid, the less she looks like me.

So I decided to log on and see what was going on, and I noticed that today marks 8 years that I've been here. It's kind of mind-boggling to think about how many milestones I've passed during that time, and how much has changed (both on the site and out here in meatspace).
Time for a celebratory beer, methinks. It's 5 o'clock somewhere in Europe, right?

If you're in the head/latrine/restroom in a facility on an Army base, don't snicker at the guy making a ton of racket in the end stall. It might be the full-bird colonel in charge of the place.

IIRC, the idle mixture screws are supposed to be about 3 1/4 - 3 1/2 turns out from seated; the computer (is supposed to) makes the needed adjustments from there

    • Scimitar7

Fun fun, did you make sure to count how many turns the lean stop screw was set at before removing it? I didn't do that on my Monte, thinking it held the mixture control solenoid in place and nothing else....that was a mistake! I hope it goes well for you.

Be sure to swap the master cylinder when you do the conversion. Having a drum/drum MC will cause uneven braking front-to-rear.
Also, IMO, the cross-drilled brake rotors aren't worth the extra cost because thy have a tendency to crack easier. Just saying.

Oh yeah, I got the master cylinder covered; that came in with the calipers yesterday. Normally I'd agree with you about the cross-drilled rotors, but I've seen a couple hold up over the years (usually on vehicles that aren't driven very much), which is why I was considering them in the first place. I went ahead and ordered the $55 ones from work, I can always upgrade later if the need arises.

Yeah, well in a 2811 pound car a VR6 engine (sort of like a German improved v6 that's more powerful. It's like being halfway between a v8 and a straight six)

      oh, only 3 rwd 8-cylinders, that's all :P
Well, we have 1, and a front wheel drive 6-cylinder (Which is a GTI, and it kind of kicks ass because it's a tiny little car)

Wow, 8? We're lucky to have 2 nice cars. But my dad is considering taking up a side job restoring classic cars, which would be sweet. How did you come to own so many cool cars?

I really don't know, my grandpa sent it to me in an e-mail earlier today.
Funny thing was what he added in the e-mail: "There's a reason the SpeedPass limit is 15 MPH..."

    • pt606

Good death or not, I'm still glad it didn't happen. I've got a lot of living (and mountain biking) to do.

About the internal stitches, I got a six-inch long, 3-inch wide gash across the back of my calf, and it all got pulled down, sort of like a sock that won't stay up. Imagine grabbing your bedsheets at the very top and pulling down a few feet. That's how it looked. There was some subcutaneous fat showing, and the skin was sort of just a flap there.

The internal stitches were put so that there wouldn't be just a loose flap of skin tied shut, you know? It holds the rest of the skin to the muscle.

They're waiving all sorts of shit these days. Personnel shortages.

    • pt606

I think it's got more to do with having trouble finding qualified personnel. I'm sure the nature of the injury has something to do with it, too. I mean, falling arches = no ruck marches, and that's part and parcel of being a Marine or Soldier.

Cool you're into stargate (they used actual assyrian cuneiform in some episodes)! Speaking of that I've got an ancient language translator (english to 5000 year old cuneiform script) you might want to checkout in my journal. Effing sweet I think...and took forever to put together :)

To tell you the truth - I don't remember. I think you understand. smiley8.gif

Actually, the way it works is that the guy driving like an asshole gets pulled over more than the guy who doesn't drive like an asshole, regardless of age.

General rule of thumb when it comes to speed: Keep it within 5 mph of the limit on surface streets, and you'll be alright. Keep it within 10 mph on the highways, and you'll be alright.

Understand that if you get scratched for those kinds of violations, you'll most likely get them thrown out in court if you dispute them. But, also keep in mind that any violation of the speed limit is a citable offense, and that's the bottom line.

Finally, your attitude when the officer gets to your window will most likely decide whether or not you get the ticket, unless the violation is especially egregious, like driving 15 mph and upwards over the speed limit.

And if you cause a wreck, expect to get cited. Period.

I've had the Guiness before. We were no a school trip, and you have to be 18 to get alcohol. They card check religiously too. I think it's because they've had so many drinking problems in the past. Anyway, it's ok. As soon as I got home, my dad bought a six pack of Guiness for the two of us anyway. smiley0.gif
