The kids and I were having a small scale Nerf war ... more like an extended skirmish really ... around the trailer and environs yesterday, when Caleb (9) disappeared for a minute. Stalking him carefully, i discovered one of the windows open that wasn't last time i went past, and this waiting there for me:

I don't know where he learned it, but it was a good plan.

Okay, i just need to check something people:
Did i just imagine that new RvB video?
I logged in and saw a new clip called, "I am the Best," apparently a music video featuring Church and 'the Elites'
I had to log off and let my wife use the computer for something "practical" and now when i come back, the video doesn't exist.

Driving along the highway under the endless Wyoming sky listening to James Taylor.
      Does it get much better?

So we were visiting a decommissioned ICBM silo today, and the guide was explaining that with the Minuteman II missle, there was no facility to aim them from the control bunker (usually about a mile away). Instead, they were aimed at their target at the time they were installed in the silo. Now that is a scary thought in itself - no discretionary choosing of targets; you were screwed the moment they put the thing in the ground and pointed it at you. Nevertheless, he then showed us how they aimed it. There were mirrors on the wall and the missle, and a long curved track marked with degrees, and a slanted hole in the roof - which he tells us points to the North Star. Yes, a multi-million dollar rocket carrying a 1.2 megaton warhead (250K times the Hiroshima bomb) was aimed with a sextant. Just like a sailing ship in the 15th Century.

I'm really glad the Cold War is over, and the microchip turned up.

Well, we're back on the road again.
It's actually really nice to be seeing the country some more, just the five of us, living the dream. It's not going to last much longer, as money is pretty much gone, but we have had a blast and intend to wring every last drop of joy from it.

We made it to Minnesota yesterday and i had the privilege of dropping in on John, aka Scapino. He and his lovely family treated us to dinner and our kids had a blast hanging out with his little guy. We camped out in their church's carpark and then hit the Mall of America today (wow - that thing is huge) John is a very cool guy and it was awesome to meet him IRL at last. I'm sorry to all those other RT folks that i didn't get to call on as we came by (Mama, Vacant, Rhin0 - I'm looking at you) but i'm pretty sure i'm poorer for it. We have met nothing but great people on this trip and i would come back here in a heartbeat if the opportunity arose.

So the sirens sound to warn that there is an imminent tornado threat, and at the urging of our hosts we move all the kids into the storm safe room and get them settled into makeshift beds there. With my nerves a little on edge, i ask Jim (our host) what we do next.

He hands me a beer and says, "Let's play some Halo."

For the record, the tornado never eventuated, and i suck at Halo.
He told one of his friends on XBL that there was no 'guest' playing with him, he was just using his feet on the other controller. Their response? "It looked like it."

So i know i'm a late bloomer in this, but i flicked on the TV the other night and caught an episode of Firefly. I loved the film [Serenity] and knew the show held cult status, and now i know why. It was awesome. I have started watching the whole season on Netflix and i can't get over how well written it is and how cleverly they have set it in the genre junction. That Joss Whedon guy is pretty smart (well, duh) and now i get to experience the whole 'I can't believe they cancelled it!' angst first-hand.
