So how are you all doing?
I realised that though i lurk in here fairly frequently (i have come to enjoy the animated adventures, though can't find the time to sit through a podcast in entirety) i haven't contributed much.

That could be because i have nothing to say. I'm not sure whether i'm becoming apathetic in my old age or just haven't been grabbed by anything enough to tap out a response. Meh, i can't even muster the enthusiasm to figure out which.

It's a wonder i can dress myself in the mornings really!

I think the early mornings may be part of the problem. I'm a morning person but getting out the door just after 6:30 on these late autumn days is not much fun. An hour and a quarter of commuting takes the shine off whatever joi de vivre (i can't speak French but im sure you know what i mean) i had left.

      I'm just a ray of freaking sunshine, ain't i?

I'm going to stop whining now. Here's a joke that really amused the kids the other day. Caleb didn't even need me to explain why it was funny.

A chicken walks into a bar. The barman looks down and says, "I think you're in the wrong joke."

Thank you and goodnight. I'm here all week - don't forget to tip your waitress.

Ok, so i'm making good on my threat brilliant idea and sharing some photos of my time in Asia.

Bear in mind i was there as part of a media team shooting video for the non-profit i work for. This wasn't a holiday, so we left the beaten track a looooong way off!

We hit Thailand, India, Bangladesh, Macau and China. There aren't many photos from the last two destinations as our videographer broke his foot and i was flying solo for those legs, meaning i didn't have many opportunities to be a tourist. Plus they were really just cities. Been in one multi-million person island-city, been in them all...

      img0463nd.jpg
Deep Fried Crickets. A delicacy in North East Thailand. ANd not as bad as you would imagine!

      img0488ca.jpg
Sign on the Metro in Bangkok. Not one you'd see at home.

      img0553wh.jpg
Butcher's shop in downtown Kolkota. Don't tell the goats...

      img0577e.jpg
Life on the tracks. Slums down by the Hoogli (Sp?) River in Kolkota.

      img0593hk.jpg
Magic with bamboo and paper! These constructs emerged in just days, everything from idols like this to Angry Birds! These craftsmen live in slums but can do this with the most basic tools...

      img0659hz.jpg
Well there's your problem... These brick kilns surround Dhaka, which could explain why the air is just so polluted, respiratory illness is a given if you spend any decent spell there.

      img0661s.jpg
Old buses don't die - they go to Bangladesh. Yes, these are on the road, waiting at lights, and they weren't the worst i saw!

      img0723nx.jpg
Step lightly ... this was the access bridge to one of the villages in rural Bangladesh we visited!

      img0780yv.jpg
Life below the breadline - these kids walking alongside the moving trains were hawking water and fruit and whatever else they could. Dangerous work for a pittance, but what other choices do they have?

There were so many more sights and sounds (and smells!) but this will do. Apologies to Facebookewrs who have seen these already.

      a really bad netizen.

I never posted the photos from my Asia extravaganza, i hardly touched a forum or group thread and i just now discovered screeds of other people's journal awesomeness that i have been missing out on.

My sincere apologies to all concerned.

So life has just been ticking over here, and don't have much to report. Work is going well, if busy, the kids are growing too fast and i'm not getting any younger. If i think of anyg monumental to report i . If i am extra diligent i'll upload some 'best-of' pics from the trip... sometime...

... How I said Indian drivers were nuts? The Bengalis make them look good. Bengladesh is a fascinating place, but Dhaka is not a great advertisement for it. Too dirty, bustling, noisy and crowded.
Also, being a six foot white guy (bedeshi) tends to get you noticed at rural railway stations. Wow, can these people stare.

Noisy, crowded, noisy, polluted, dusty, did I mention noisy? And I think drivers in Kolkata are the bravest, most insane motorists ever. Of all time.

    • Hello, I'm going away. Again

      Rev_Pleb

Hey guys. How's it been? I've been pretty slack about keeping this world synced with my real world.
Part of it could be Christmas and New Years.
Part of it could be the three weeks i just spent camping near the beach in Northland.
      - For those of you not familiar with the region, imagine golden sand beaches not unlike the Atlantic coast of Florida, with gentle rolling surf just made for boogieboarding kids, and only a handful of people there on a busy day. You relax under the pohutakawa trees then build massive sandcastles before taking a refreshing dip to wash off the sand, then do it all over again. I got way too much sun but loved it regardless.

Part of it could just be that I'm slack.

Anyway, I'm here now and psyching myself up for restarting at work next week.
But only for about 12 days. That's the going away part.

From the end of January i will be tripping around South East Asia with a videographer and the National Director, visiting field teams and shooting interviews and footage for the next 2 years' appeals and programmes (you may or may not recall i work for a mission organisation now). We'll be in Thailand, India, Bangladesh, Macau and China for the whole of February and the first week of March.

It is going to be a lifechanging experience, i know. I have spent some time in Asia (6 months in the Philippines about 12 years ago) but this will be both a whirlwind experience and a very feet-on-the-ground perspective, as we will be spending time with people who live and work amongst the locals. We'll be visiting relief and development projects and a business which helps women escape the sex trade. We'll see the bright lights and glamour of massive cities and the squalor of some of the worst slums. It will be ... intense.

It also means my wife has to be a solo mum to three kids for over a month and we have to be apart. That is going to be the hardest part. I will miss my family, but i will be pretty preoccupied. They will just have to do the day to day stuff without me, and that's not easy. It is a subject we don't talk about much - a pretty big elephant in the room. If you are the praying kind, i would appreciate your support for my family over Feb. I'm sure i will be fine by comparison; i have had so many shots and am taking so much medication i may actually be immortal for several weeks i think. (although my travelling partners assure me it is a when not if i get sick!)

Anyway, that's me up to date. I'll try to get on here from abroad, just for the entertainment, if i can find a hotspot for my phone.

So how are you all doing?

A little while ago the RvB blog mentioned a miniseries that was featuring on another site that slotted into the RvB canon but wasn't part of any of the existing series. I watched the first four (of an apparent six) episodes, but do you think I can find them to watch the rest now? If anyone has any ideas, or better yet a link, I'd be greatly appreciative.

      -EDIT-

I am a moron. No, seriously. I am part of this massive online community that loves all things RvB and yet i didn't think to look around the place first. Duh. There's a whole thread dedicated to the RvB MIA maxi-series over on Halo Waypoint that has links and gossip and everything.
So thank you and as you were, interwebs people. Just me being stupid.
      Business as usual.

A local church has had their children's ministry group make a nativity film (a project they have done twice now) and it has garnered some local press attention. It is such a beautiful retelling of the Advent story that i have to share it. These are the 2009 and 2011 videos. If you folk from across the seas can get past the (gorgeous) kiwi accents on these kids, these videos are just awesome.

      Hey interwebs people
So i realise i have been neglecting my whanau (family) here and finally motivated myself to do something about it. So here i am.
It's been pretty crazy so although i have dropped in from time to time, i haven't invested any energy in contributing, and i feel a touch guilty about that because you folks are really pretty good people to hang out with. Work is keeping me really busy, but i'm loving it. We're struggling a little because the salary is below average, but i love the work so i'm looking for a second job and my wife is looking for work to keep above the breadline.
Besides that, not much has changed. I loved catching up with some of the RvB guys and hope to manage it again, but weekends at the moment are for hanging out with the kids and my wife and pottering with stuff.
The next plan is to get some more work/income, and buy a motorbike to resolve some of the commuting issues.
      That's right, a suicide machine.
      Pray for me y'all.

That book title doesn't sound familiar to me. They may have done that in the early days of the tours. I think I came in after a year. I know they've done Wayne Batson books in the past, but I don't think I've ever reviewed one.
