I found one. Met some of the kiwi RvB fans here for the BBq. Nice to meet real people with real names. Photo to come.

I need to whine a little and this is my only appropriate avenue at the moment. Please feel free to ignore/tell me to harden up/play imaginary violins with looks of sarcastic derision.

So the Armageddon Expo (think a NZ comic con) opens today. It's less than 5 km from work, and being a Friday, entry is only $10. And the RT guys are here for it.
And we're struggling to survive as a family of 5 on my (below average) salary with some significant medical bills on the horizon.
So I can't justify the expense, no matter how badly I want to.
      It kind of sucks.

I'm not looking for help or outpourings of sympathy really. I appreciate how much I can be thankful for and how much worse so many millions of others have it. I work for a mission agency and just yesterday was talking to folk in Thailand who work with people who have lost half their livelihood in the flooding there. My complaints are trivial and selfish in the light of day.
But sometimes I just need to complain.
      /whining

...suck. This one came on with no warning and isn't welcome. I would like to revisit its tenancy agreement, and revoke that sucker.

But seriously, i hate being sick.

Just so you know, I still exist. We've found a place to live on a farm a little way out of the city and work is busy but good. My wife needs a job now though, so we can afford to get our Internet hooked up and I can buy a motorbike for commuting. It will be fractionally cheaper than riding the bus (as I am right now) and a whole lot quicker. An hour each way is great for contemplation time, but I have other things could be doing with it.

I've been a bit slack updating my online life because everything IRL is in such flux. BUT I can report some things:

      I have a job!

Yes, someone fell for it decided i was employable I had the right stuff, so since Monday I have been the Media and Communications Specialist for the New Zealand Baptist Mission Society. As i have said several times already, it's kind of a dream job combining my love of writing and creating with my theological training and convictions.

The pay isn't huge, but it is for a non-profit organisation so it's not unexpected. However, I get to interface with people out in the field and in NZ, and have heaps of input into the big promo campaigns etc. I'll have speaking gigs at various conferences once i'm up to speed and will be visiting a few of them around the country (heading down to my old stomping ground in Hawkes Bay in two weeks for the first one, where i'm apparently sitting on a discussion panel and possibly playing in the band that night!)

And one of the coolest parts is that every 18 months - 2 years we need to do a 'media gathering' trip - collecting the video clips, photos, interviews, etc that i will incorporate into the projects for the following couple of years. Which means 4 weeks travelling through South East and Central Asia meeting people, visiting projects and getting a feel for life on the ground in some pretty awesome contexts. The next one comes up in early 2012 and my wife is soooo jealous.

So we still need to find somewhere to live, a second car and a decent school (the family is house-sitting back in our old town while i billet with family in the big smoke and go home weekends) but we're on our way.

Characters don't show up in the reflections. You are imagining that. Maybe you saw the base?

      Milestones -
      Online or broken?
      Automatic or manually given?
      Periodic updates or instant-ish?

      uh, what?

Milestones are automatically awarded to you once you achieve a particular something on the site, like a hundred journals or something. New ones are added from time to time as the site evolves. And I guess you can only get them online, and they're not broken.

Thanks for responding to my thread. I agree it's often more trouble then it's worth talking to people in these threads, but it is a good way to see what people are saying and to practice responding in a way that honors Christ. Please let me know if you need anything. Here are a few good threads I'm already participating in...

      Religion in Schools

      Evolution

All KNowing, All Powerful, All Good?

And there are many more here and here. Thanks again, and God bless!
