So I'm on facebook, and just for the hell of it I type "bierwagen" into the search box, thinking that the only result will be me.

      WRONG

Apparently, there's a bunch of Bierwagens on the facewebs, and they've/we've started a Bierwagen group.

If I could go back and give my thirteen year old self some advice, the main thing I'd tell him would be to stick his head up and look around. I didn't really grasp it at the time, but the whole world we lived in was as fake as a Twinkie. Not just school, but the entire town. Why do people move to suburbia? To have kids! So no wonder it seemed boring and sterile. The whole place was a giant nursery, an artificial town created explicitly for the purpose of breeding children.

Where I grew up, it felt as if there was nowhere to go, and nothing to do. This was no accident. Suburbs are deliberately designed to exclude the outside world, because it contains things that could endanger children.

And as for the schools, they were just holding pens within this fake world. Officially the purpose of schools is to teach kids. In fact their primary purpose is to keep kids locked up in one place for a big chunk of the day so adults can get things done. And I have no problem with this: in a specialized industrial society, it would be a disaster to have kids running around loose.

What bothers me is not that the kids are kept in prisons, but that (a) they aren't told about it, and (b) the prisons are run mostly by the inmates. Kids are sent off to spend six years memorizing meaningless facts in a world ruled by a caste of giants who run after an oblong brown ball, as if this were the most natural thing in the world. And if they balk at this surreal cocktail, they're called misfits.

Life in this twisted world is stressful for the kids. And not just for the nerds. Like any war, it's damaging even to the winners.

Adults can't avoid seeing that teenage kids are tormented. So why don't they do something about it? Because they blame it on puberty. The reason kids are so unhappy, adults tell themselves, is that monstrous new chemicals, hormones, are now coursing through their bloodstream and messing up everything. There's nothing wrong with the system; it's just inevitable that kids will be miserable at that age.

      http://www.paulgraham.com/nerds.html

That's the thing I've noticed, now that I work for a living. You go to work, you do your job, and there's no bullshit. No tedious system to either manipulate or evade, no social crap to wade through, just what needs to be done and what has been done.

I wouldn't call it fun, exactly, but it's better than school.

The plot of Gyo centers around the "death scent", a revolting smell first encountered in connection with creatures appearing to be bizarre fishes with scuttling, sharp legs. At first they appear merely as smaller fishes, but later also as larger sea creatures such as sharks.

The creatures are eventually revealed to consist of a small metallic, legged structure with the carcass of a dead animal (and later, human) strapped on top. Germs infecting the rotting body produce a gas - responsible for the terrible "death scent" that surrounds the creatures - that makes the metal construct move.

      From Hatebreed's "Destroy Everything".

I must destroy everything that tries to infect!

      Destroy Everything!
      Destroy Everything!
      Destroy Everything!
      Decimate what threatens me!

      Cleanse this world with flame
      End this, cleanse this
      Rebuild and start again
      Obliterate what makes us weak
End this and embrace the destruction

      From "Immortal Enemies".

      Enemies never die
      Conflict is unending
      Chaos never ceases
      Where does the solution lie?

It's like they fucking wrote the album while reading Gyo! Blowing my mind, man!

I'm thinking of writing a book about rebuilding civilization, called Rebuilding Civilization. Here's the introduction:

The end of civilization is often addressed in popular fiction, yet the subsequent reconstruction is almost universally overlooked, or covered in the most generic manner, with several notable exceptions. (See section 15) This work attempts to correct this oversight. Volume 1 concerns technology from prehistory to about 1900, from the Iron Age to the Electrical Age; while volume 2 covers technology from 1940 to about 2015, from the Nuclear Age to the Nanotechnology Age, and is expected to be considerably more complex than the first volume. Successive volumes will be issued as technology further progresses.

      What do you think?

I'm watching these trampoline gymnastics videos on youtube, and it's pretty scary.

In competition-level trampoline stuff they've got six spotters around the perimeter of the trampoline, and they're there for a reason. It's because if they weren't there, screwing up would kill you. Bounce wrong, and you're falling from fifteen, twenty feet. Even so, the spotters just slow you down on your way to the ground. Gracefully catching someone from the height is apparently impossible.

In the past 6 months, US troops have been killed in Iraq at the highest rate since the war began.

For the first time in polling on the Iraq War, a majority of Americans (51%) say that they expect the United States to "lose" in Iraq. Worse, 66 percent say that the war was not worth it! The public is divided about what to do about this white elephant it clearly thinks it bought. A slight majority says that a timetable for withdrawal should be set, while 48% oppose such a step. Only 29% say that Bush is doing a good job in Iraq.

Some 85 persons were killed or found dead in Iraq on Tuesday.

      Sam was right: issue #5629

Interesting that CNN goes into full hysteria-mode when 31 Americans students are killed, but three times that number is just Iraq as usual. Way to go, liberal media!

I'm reading the wikipedia article on breast implants and it is a fucking non-stop horror show.

Compromise of blood supply as a result of surgical procedures may lead to skin loss or breast tissue necrosis (death). Unstable or weakened tissue covering may result in subsequent extrusion of the breast implant through the skin. Implant extrusion and tissue necrosis are rare in breast augmentation patients, but may occurs in up to 1-2% of reconstruction patients using implants.

Surgery needed to correct this can result in unacceptable scarring or breast tissue loss. Procedures which combine simultansous breast augmentation with mastopexy (breast lift) techniques carry higher rates of implant loss or wound breakdown then either procedure alone.

A class-action lawsuit filed in San Francisco in 2001 by six female Wal-Mart employees, alleging that the company has denied promotions and equal pay to women, is proceeding steadily to trial; by some estimates, the suit could cost the company as much as five billion dollars. Wal-Mart has denied that it discriminates against women. Kathleen MacDonald joined the suit after she learned that a male counterpart, who, like her, was stocking shelves, earned more than she did. When she raised the issue, she told me, "my immediate supervisor said, 'Well, God made Adam first, and Eve came from him.' I was, like, what? That's when I decided enough was enough."

Way to go, Wal-Mart. Way to go.
