    • Just about Summer...

      RosaSpinaque

and that means primary con and cosplay season! Today I hunted for fabric and supplies and hemmed about 20 yards of fabric strips for ruffles and cut out skirt pieces...but there is still sooo much to do for everything! I am entering a contest this year, at AX here in LA during the 4th of July weekend. My dear friend Lecta and one of our other friends will be part of a competition together! More on this later though..haha. Are any of you planning on attending AX here in LA? If so are you cosplaying? If not AX what cons are you all planning to attend this summer if any?

I am super excited!!! I was starting to get a bit discouraged with the job hunt just because I didn't even know where to apply. A lot of costume jobs are found through networking. A lot of them just don't post on job sites and stuff. All of the ones I was finding required either tons of experience even though they were entry level jobs, or they expected you to work for free. Some of them not only expected you to work for free, but to foot the bill for the costumes too! I need to pay for life, and don't have the luxury of getting experience through unpaid work. (My rent isn't going to pay itself unfortunalety!) But today I had an interview with the costume department at Universal. The HR lady I spoke with said they were only hiring for a supervisor position but encouraged me to send in my resume etc. anyway. Well, it turns out she didn't really know what she was talking about because the job wasn't for a supervisor, it was more of an office job taking care of stuff for the head of the costume dept. so she could have more time. During the interview (it was with the two woman who are the heads of the costume department) they were both really impressed and excited about everything I was telling them and showing them. They told me they didn't want to hire me for the job I was applying for as it would be a waste of my time and talents and instead offered me a skilled craftsperson job. I won't be doing a lot of designing, but I didn't excpect that I would right off the bat. I will get to do some colloborative designs though. That is ok, as I love what I will be mostly doing anyway, which is construction and crafts etc. I get to build all sorts of costumes etc for all sorts of shows. There are summer shows, Halloween shows, Christmas shows etc. This will be a really great opportunity for me and I am so excited! So far I am the first person from my class to have found regular employment. (One other girl has done a little freelancing so far) On top of that I got home from the interview today and got an email from one of my teachers hiring me to help with a screen printing project! So the next two days are going to be really long work days as I have full days at my current job, then wil be going to do the screen printing after. So I have lots going on and am really excited to start my career!
In other news RvBCA planning is still in the works and we are coming up with a lot of really great ideas! It is going to be AWESOME so I hope a lot of you can make it! smiley12.gifsmiley13.gifsmiley0.gif

Some of us are planning on cosplaying at CC this year. This is the place to tell us all who you will be cosplaying as so RvBers can keep an eye out for you. This is also the place for the planning of meet ups during the con for photo shoots etc. with your fellow RvB cosplayers! We are thinking of having a meet up on the steps outside of one of the entrances. What do you think of that? Also, do you want just one meet up or a meeting each day?

So, for 2010 the proposed meeting place is in San Diego, around Comic Con. This thread is for discussion and planning of this event. When do people want to have the meet up? Before, during, or after Comic Con? Is there a suuuper good reason for RvBCA year one to not be held in San Diego? Once again, comments, questions, concerns, and help are greatly appreciated!

This is now a thread to start the discussion of a RvB organized gathering somewhere here in SoCal. It could be in LA, or it has been suggested that in San Diego around Comic Con would be a good time and place...Thoughts? Comments? Suggestions?

Today, while crossing the street at a cross walk, which 3 cars on the street had stopped at, leaving one lane left without a vehicle stopped, some douchebag almost hit me. They were speeding so fast that had I been one-two seconds quicker on the crosswalk, I would be either severly injured or dead now. They were going so fast and I was so close my pant leg moved, whether from wind or if it brushed my pants I don't know, but it really freaked me out. So anyway, if you are driving, please, please pay attention to cross walks so you don't hit some poor pedestrian! ( I like being alive!!) And enjoy life and don't take stuff for granted, especially your loved ones, as you never know when it will end! This happened right after I got parking ticket for getting to my car four minutes late to move it.. smiley4.gif so it was not the best morning. But almost getting hit made me realize that there are worse things than parking tickets! So my resolve to work hard for what I want in life has been strengthened!

Also, anyone interested in a RvBLA? Miztli and I think it is a good idea, are any of you who are in or close to Los Angeles interested in a gathering? It could even be somewhere else in SoCal than LA... Maybe during Con season here when more RvBers are around??? Thoughts? Comments? Suggestions?

Well, I smiley12.gif you all! XOXO

      should've commented sooner...

but...the shirt thing is coming along weirdly...

i've researched most thing...and realize that i will need guidance...and some help...no problem there...

but the weird thing is...just recently...offers have been coming up...by printers...there's one i'm liking...he's friends with my friends father...and came up to me about the high school sweater design...

i now need to negotiate with him...individual printings...not bulk packaging...its the only way i'd be able to afford it and make immediate profit...i told him if the sweaters come out well...both profit and quality...then we'll talk shirts...

i'm still willing to go handmade...checked out prices around me...not done with that though

also found some models...so to speak...think i went to far with that one...but meh...go big or go home

I wore the costume when we airbrushed it but the stencils just fell apart so the designs didn't work the way I wanted them to. I have thought about different ways of adding the designs but I just wasn't sure how to put stretch fabric on stretch fabric and make it work.

    • Miztli

i actually now VERY little about it...

For almost a year now...i've been going to several places in LA that specialize in printing shirts and designing...mostly urban "hip" companies...

and it never turned out well...either the price range was far to exorbitant for my budget...or they would sponsor my designs but 1) make me fork over all creative rights...or 2) Give me almost bupkiss for pay...none offered residual payment...

      so i was wondering...

could you help me?....obviously not with the physical labor of it...but guide me...maybe answer a few questions here n' there if i get stuck or confused... and send me in the direction of some places that might facilitate this for me and supply the materials...

Ooo I love period costuming. At the moment I'm trying to sort out some 1930s/1950s gangster wear, mainly so I look the part at the burlesque shows. Think of me as the ultimate accessory, and I shift all the heavy stuff on stage so have to look the part. Its great, 2 mins work = free show.

I tell ya, the amount of work the girls put into or spend on costumes is impressive. Look so amazing though.

Seen the finale of True blood yet?

I was a stunty on the second two films, one of the many involved really. Got to wear all that cool prosthetic stuff and do potentially harmful things, ahh good times. About 6 months full on work.

On the busy days the old hands would help out the weta peeps getting the noob extras through walldrope and breakdown. Of course being traditional kiwi blokes we would sometimes chat up the girls from weta when they were rubbing ky jelly and fake gore onto our costumes, i'm sure it was quite confusing while we were wearing our orc masks. So yeah, regular faces by all means.

They do prefer hiring kiwis but you never know... if I end up down those ways I will put in a good word for ya ; ) They are very busy too with all the projects going on.
