      Roselle Easily Excitable

I went for my first job interview today! It was for a junior accounting position at a small firm in town - and it was the first place that ever called me back and gave me a chance, so I was pretty excited to get there and prove myself worthy of employment.

Now, I was 70% excited - and about 30% nervous. Wait. More like 51% nervous, 49% excited. I was really, really nervous. I started getting ready at 2:30 and hopped on a taxi an hour later to arrive at the place about 15 minutes before my appointment time because I so desperately did not want to make a bad first impression by being late. Even the taxi driver wished me well. I stood outside, stared at the signs that were plastered elegantly on the glass, and, hoping that the receptionist couldn't see me through the blinds, half-hyperventilated.

I got in and the office floor manager was on the phone, so I decided to sit myself on one of the three chairs that lined the wall in front of her. The place was fancy - and so very beautiful. The red carpet was clean, the cream walls were pristine, and my eyes immediately travelled to the stained glass design on the door to one of the offices. Immediately, the intimidation factor grows and the nervous-percentage increased some more to overpower the excited-percentage. My stomach was doing flips, my throat was going dry, and my leg were starting to bounce.

I've never been good at talking to strangers (but I am working on it).

When her conversation on the phone ended, she smiled at me and I informed her that I was there for my interview. "At 4?"

"Roselle?" she read, and I nodded. Yeah. That's me. I wasn't nervous enough to forget my own name - that happens at 90% nervous level. "Yeah, I'll just let the owner know you're here." She gave me what seemed like a reassuring smile and motioned for me to sit back down.

She returned with the owner, the man I had sent my resume to, and he welcomed me with a handshake. I shook his hand, suddenly remembering all the notes that I had heard people tell me - "be firm", "dry hands", "make eye contact", "smile", "don't give a weak handshake".

Was my handshake weak? I don't know, I didn't have time to analyse when he lead me towards the office to my right and offered me a seat. He had my resume printed out, the three sheets of paper I'd been sending out to several places never to hear from them again, spread on the table.

The interview went for a lot shorter than I thought. It went quickly - and the most disappointing thing was how woefully unprepared I was. Now, I'm not foolish. I looked up everything there is to know about interviews - I asked around as to what questions commonly get asked. I had my responses ready for "what is your greatest strength?" (my enthusiasm and willingness to give as much as I can, never hesitating to go above and beyond) and "what are your weaknesses?" (I get flustered when under pressure but I found that preparing everything beforehand severely helps). I had an answer for "what are your goals?" (to get a job and begin to gain experience and hopefully continue expanding on my studies in the future).

But he had asked things like "what did you do at high school?" (I didn't know what to say. "Maths? Science? I did accounting but other than that just standard stuff") and "what have you been doing since you graduated?" ("Looking around for a job, and I started on a tax course"). I kind of... froze. And started just blabbering.

The interview ended before my friend even finished showering (she didn't read my message about getting there til after she went), and with a final handshake and a "thank you for coming", I was out the door. They said I should wait for a call, but I know my lack of experience really hurt me some. And my waffley responses probably didn't help either. In the back of my mind I knew I probably shouldn't expect anything. I got out into the windy afternoon (at 4, funnily enough) and started to walk towards my favourite ice cream place.

I think a couple of people noticed how dejected I looked because they greeted me with hellos and how are yous. I was still nervous, so I couldn't do anything beyond a smile and a nod. Which is odd, considering my interview was already done, but the nervousness lingered - 'Oh god, what had I done wrong?' and 'maybe I shouldn't have said that' ran through my head. I walked four blocks, feeling overdressed among the parents running errands and picking their children up, and ended up sitting at my favourite ice cream place with a single scoop of cherry ice cream in a cup and my phone in my hands talking to a friend who told me there's nothing left to do but wait.

So the wait begins again. I've gotten many rejections - surely another one is nothing I can't brush off?

While I wait, does anyone have any interview tips they can share?

TL;DR: Went for my first interview today! I don't think I did too well. Does anyone have any tips for future interviews? Thanks smiley13.gif

It's been a while since my last "life update" journal and I thought this event was significant enough to put in!

I graduated over the weekend! smiley0.gif

Yup - after three years of hard study and late night cramming and endless assessments, I have finished tertiary schooling and received my parchment on Saturday, the 7th of March. It was a glorious day. I walked on stage too early, made an awkward back track, shook the chancellor's hand with sweaty palms, and smiled widely at a random person. But I now have the (expensive) piece of paper that says I've finished my business degree!

University was very challenging and frustrating, but as much as I'd hate to admit it, I'll miss it. I was invited to come back and do my honours, but I declined, yearning for a break. I hope I made the right choice - I didn't want to move out of town, away from my sources of support, for a year. I'm limited in the sense that I cannot drive and so very lacking in self-confidence I didn't think I could go through with it.

I'm 19, I've never not been at school around this time of year so I'm at a loss for exactly what to do, but I'm currently looking for a job (it's difficult with little experience) and taking it slow.

Retrospectively, I thought of all the people that helped me out during the three year slog. Amongst the common suspects (my family, my friends, my supportive boyfriend), I realised I have RT/AH to thank too! Achievement Hunter let's plays kept me company during late nights of writing; the RT Podcast helped me keep track of what day it was; and RWBY and RvB kept me from going dry from numbers by injecting some art and story and colour in my life.

      Thanks! smiley12.gif

Sai is really nice because you can customize the brushes and get awesome effects, but Fire Alpaca is pretty smooth and I thought it was good for general doodles!
