It's been a while since I ranted, but this bothers me. When I was married back in March there was another couple that came. Their wedding was to be held about a month after ours. They didn't get us a gift, citing not having money. Fast forward to their wedding. My wife gets them a gift because it's the right thing to do. We went to their wedding with the gift. They left for their honeymoon- a vacation at Disney Land. Today, they upgraded their PC so it can run Wolfenstein: The New Order.

Wait, what? They didn't have the money for a damn gift card but they can go to Disney Land and upgrade their computer? Last time I checked, a honeymoon and PC upgrade costs a bit more than a $20 gift card to Target or Bed, Bath, & Beyond. Oh, and both of them work. She's a full-time employee that I would wager clears $3,000 a month at least. I don't know what he makes. I haven't drawn a paycheck since last August due to having to do an internship and my wife makes enough to pay her bills. We didn't have a honeymoon. We helped cleanup the reception site, packed, came home, and enjoyed a drink with some good friends that flew in.

      Such BS.

    • The medical model and "mental illness."

      SDMF

This is more to help organize my own thoughts and beliefs. The predominant belief in the interrelated fields of psychiatry, psychology, counseling, and social work is that when someone is depressed, anxious, psychotic, et cetera they live with a "mental illness." The American Psychiatric Association subscribes to the medical model, which asserts that mental illnesses are organic in nature. As these so-called illnesses are organic in nature, they are frequently treated with medication. Of course there are some problems with that.

First off, while medical technology is always advancing, it is nowhere near advanced enough to provide conclusive proof that disorders are due to the long-held belief of "chemical imbalances." Yes, there are theories, such as the "dopamine hypothesis of schizophrenia," but it's just that- a theory. To quote philosopher Emerson Hugh, "If the human brain were so simple that we could understand it, we would be so simple that we couldn't.' Simple and brilliant. We don't have anything near a full understanding of the human brain. I would love to see that reality, but I don't know that it will happen anytime soon. So who are these psychiatrists to say that Major Depressive Disorder or PTSD are organic in nature without hard empirical evidence providing support? Is that not completely counter-intuitive to the scientific method?

Second, medications. I've read and reviewed some of the literature in the field of psychopharmacology. In literally every case, the research was funded by a pharmaceutical manufacturer. Also in every case, the research found that the medication was not only effective, was but was also superior to any medications it was compared against in the research piece. The research is also not able to provide strong empirical evidence of how these medications work. Again, there are theories, but no proof. I've handled my fair share of these medications over the past few years. I've seen them work. I know they can work. I also know there is no scientific proof of how they work. I also have concerns of dependency. Research done on other countries has shown that people who are treated with psychopharmaceuticals short-term are less prone to relapse. Ongoing research in the field of neuroplasticity could strike a small blow to the psychopharmaceutical industry. I say small because PhRMA has lobbyists and advertising revenue that will ensure their products continue to be taken like candy in the immediate future.

So why are so many people on psychopharmaceuticals? Why are prescription rates for Xanax, Prozac, and so many others so high? Are we as a country fooled by the so-called experts in the field of psychiatry? Do we prefer to just take a pill and care about our problems a little less for a little while? I have to reject the medical model. The field of psychiatry is based on little more that pseudo-science and poor research. People, especially psychiatrists and other self-professed "scientists" need to take responsibility for their behaviors instead of providing weak justification and trying to displace any sense of responsibility.

Semester left in my Ed.S., that is. Damn. 54 graduate hours later, I'm almost done. Just two classes remain- Research Design and Program Evaluation and Internship II. One research project, comps (Counselor Preparation Comprehensive Examination), and the licensing exam, the NCE (National Counselor Examination). This semester ended with two As (Internship I and Independent Study in Counselor Development and Supervision) and a B (Behavior Assessment and Intervention), keeping my GPA locked at 3.667. My GPA will end at 3.6, 3.65, or 3.7. Not too shabby and far better than my GPA as an undergraduate (2.934). First I have to endure my fiancee's graduation tomorrow, better known as three hours of obnoxious inbreds while continuously silently screaming at them to shut the hell up.

Is right around the proverbial corner. Both consoles look to be offering a solid launch line-up and require day one internet updates not to be expensive paperweights. They should also offer some stellar titles. Some I'm looking forward to, even if they don't officially exist yet in some cases-

      Crimson Dragon
      Halo 5 (and 6)
      The Evil Within
      Wolfenstein:The New Order
Doom 4 (although this could well come out NEXT next-gen)
      Mortal Kombat II
      DmC: Devil May Cry 2
      Batman: Arkham whatever-it-will-be-called
Duke Nukem (a proper one developed from the ground up)
      Borderlands 3
      Left 4 Dead 3

That's all I've got for now. Now Nathan needs to eat the damn ghost chili chips already.

      SDMF

Say hi to the outside world for me on Thursdays for the next few months. I'll be starting my day at the university counseling center. When 4:00 rolls around I'll have group supervision as part of my internship for 90 minutes. I then get an hour break until my other class, which will run from 6:30-9:20. Yeah, I may be putting in a 14 hour day at least once a week. As for Wednesdays, those are TBD but could also be bad. I'm doing an independent study in counselor development and supervision, which will likely see me giving supervision and feedback to this semester's Prepracticum class. The class meets in two sections, both Wednesday, from 3:00-5:50 and 6:30-9:20. Then there's still likely to be proper instruction time and supervision on my feedback. Great.

Check mine every now and then over the next few months. I'm about to dive into what will likely be the most trying semester to date. I'll be taking nine hours, which is full-time by graduate standards. One class is Internship I, which requires class time, supervision, and (minimum) 300 unpaid hours. I'm fortunate enough to be doing my internship at the university Counseling Center, so I don't have to deal with a client base with a DSM diagnosis, medications, or being a slave to third-party payers (Medicaid and Medicare, primarily). Behavior Assessment and Intervention is another course and another three hours of class time, not counting reading and papers. The final course is Counselor Development and Supervision, an independent study course, which will require class time, giving supervision to Preprac and Prac students, and receiving supervision on the supervision I'll be providing. And for the hell of it, I applied for a GA spot. I'm hoping the head of the program was one of the faculty that was approved for a GA because I would almost certainly get the spot.

So every American's holiday is but a week away, so I thought I would take a few minutes to talk about some of the things that make our country so great.

Congressional Republicans always insist on tax breaks for the wealthy because they're the "job creators" but don't want to keep student loan interest rates at 3.4% versus 6.8% because "it would cost too much." They propose interest rates be linked to the market. Yeah, because giving the market free reign over massive amounts of money has worked out so well recently.

The Supreme Court strikes down a part of the Voting Rights Act because, apparently, racial discrimination is not an issue in the south. They also voted that states cannot sue the manufacturers of generic medications for known side effects. Nothing says "non-partisan" like protecting big business.

Texas governor Rick Perry calls Democrat Wendy Davis a terrorist because she did a 13 hour filibuster to prevent a 20 week ban on abortions. Because a man knows what's best for a pregnant woman and her baby. While Perry claims to be pro-life, the state is slated to have it's 500th execution- a black woman. Go figure.

In 2005 Congressional Republicans and then-president W. passed the Medicare Modernization Act. This act effectively locked the government out of price-negotiating prescriptions and manufacturing them. Sorry your prescriptions are so expensive, seniors and disabled citizens. Thank the Republicans that claim to be all about cutting government.

The Tea Party, a "grass roots movement" is under-written by Freedom Works, which is run by the uber-wealthy Koch Brothers. Sadly, I would bet almost no Joe Schmoe supporters know this.

We started a "war on terror" over ten years ago. Untold numbers of people were killed over oil, defending ourselves from terrorism, and the idiotic concept of "American exceptionalism."

The previous presidential cycle saw people of incredible ignorance almost get nominated for our highest office (Santorum, Bachmann, Perry, Gingrich).

Shootings continue to plague our schools and colleges, yet no changes have been made because the NRA has deep pockets and a solution to gun violence- more guns.

The American Psychiatric Association released the DSM 5, which lowered the thresholds for a host of previously existing diagnoses while introducing new diagnoses that can be described as "pathologizing normal human experiences."

Despite rather obvious signs of global warming, politicians continue to insist the science is fake.

Florida governor Scott Walker signed a law that allows big business not to provide paid sick leave. Spoiler alert- stay away from Red Lobster and Olive Garden.

We are one of two countries in the world that allow direct-to-consumer advertising of pharmaceuticals. The other- New Zealand. How did this happen? Republican hero Ronald Reagan. Noticing a theme yet?

Radio consists of no-talent schmucks such as Bieber, Minaj, Swift, Ke$ha, and Nickelback. To be fair, Canada takes some blame there (blame Canada, blame Canada).

      Twilight

In all, that even though we call ourselves a "democracy," we more clearly resemble fascism. Corporations run Congress. Period.

    • Rethinking Diagnosis

      SDMF

So the American Psychiatric Association released the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders Volume 5 (DSM 5) recently. This manual is called the "bible of psychiatry." It provides diagnostic categories for a plethora of so-called mental disorders ranging from anxiety to depression to schizophrenia. It provides the diagnostic codes required by insurance companies for mental health facilities/service providers to receive reimbursement for. It also sucks fat balls. My course in Psychopathology remains one of my favorites. I enjoyed the challenge of taking limited information and making an accurate diagnosis using the DSM-IV-TR. The DSM 5 is basically scientific fraud. And I use the word "scientific" loosely in this case. There is nothing scientific about the manual. The pre-existing theories that mental disorders are the result of a so-called "chemical imbalance" continue to have no scientific merit. Same goes for psychopharmaceuticals. Due to the complexity of the brain, there is no conclusive proof exactly HOW these medications work. Granted, I work with people that take them and can see that they can be effective.

The big problem lies within the diagnostic changes found within. For example, an already shady diagnosis, Generalized Anxiety Disorder, had the diagnostic threshold lowered from six months to three. So you can get disability for being too anxious to work for three months instead of six. In previous editions, grieving served as an exemption from Major Depressive Disorder. Now, if grieving lasts longer than two weeks, it can be diagnosed as depression. A problematic new diagnosis for children was also penned- Disruptive Mood Dysregulation Disorder. TL;DR version- it's a disorder for a child to throw temper tantrums. Can you say "pathologizing normal human behaviors and experiences"? As a professional, I have to say that while I used to find diagnosis interesting, this is plain abuse. I cannot ethically allow myself to use this manual and have to abandon diagnosis at this time. It's for the best for my future as a professional and the people I will provide services to.

After doing business with you for over a decade, I must terminate our relationship. Yesterday, people could buy Injustice: Gods Among Us new for $9.99 from the time of 12-1 EST. Due to high traffic, the servers crashed within seconds of the sale. A handful of people were able to make a purchase or purchases. That's right, they allowed for multiple purchases of a limited-stock item per customer. However, a visit to the GameStop Facebook page indicates that thousands did not. Some sat through loading screens for as long as 45 minutes. Many had the game in their cart, only to be greeted with a message that it had been removed. Others, such as myself, we never able to put the game into their cart. The customer service number was flooded with pissed-off customers (such as yours truly). All my agent did was say, in a nutshell, "Sorry, but the game sold out and the screen freezing was it's way of telling you. You can still purchase other editions for $60 or $100."

Yes, you read that right. I couldn't buy the game for $10, so this bonehead offered to sell higher-priced versions. Later that night, an apology was posted on the Facebook page. That's it. No offers to correct the situation. No restitution for the people that had the game in their cart and were screwed. Just a "Sorry we goofed, but check out our other deals!" No. You don't put a critically-acclaimed game on a deep discount, limit copies, allow for multiple purchases, watch the servers crash, and expect a simple apology to suffice. You don't treat customers that way. I hope the copies that sold made them happy and is worth the backlash. Myself and who knows how many others will be taking our business elsewhere.

Hoping for a Fatality (or at least an X-Ray move) on GameStop,

Same franchises would say "not really." Bear in mind these are games that are not direct sequels. Games that would be considered a third in a franchise but are not direct sequels (ex. Bioshock Infinite) are omitted Some of the worst 3s (in my opinion)-

Dead Space- the first was a nerve-testing masterpiece of tension and quick-shooting while Dead Space 3 had nothing to offer other than a robust weapon-crafting mechanic.

F.E.A.R.- the first stylishly combined an FPS with Japanese horror while F.3.A.R. (ugh) only offered generic military shooting and a cop-out ending.

Assassin's Creed III- the second had a fantastic protagonist and intriguing story while the third offered a complete bullshit ending.

Ninja Gaiden 3- the first two are masterpieces by Tomonobu Itagaki while NG3 resulted in me calling the current Team Ninja director Yosuke Hayashi Yosuke Hasnoballs.

Army of Two: The Devil's Cartel- the first was a Michael Bay version of Gears of War while Devil's Cartel offers little more than protagonists named Alpha and Bravo (seriously).

Fortunately not all thirds are bad (Super Mario Bros 3, Sonic the Hedgehog 3, Silent Hill 3, Final Fantasy III, Metal Gear Solid 3, God of War III, Gears of War 3).

      Just a random musing,

I'm starting to think you should post comments somewhere where people don't know that you're an asshole.

Just to clarify, so you know that I did no say what I did just to be a dick:

It's pretty obvious from looking at your profile that there is not exactly a large number of people that routinely read your journals. Some of us that do have had lengthy conversations with you regarding these things long before you posted these public rants on the games industry.

If you REALLY want to make people stop and think about where things are going right now--and I agree with you that a lot of what is going on with current and emerging sales models is complete bullshit--you need to repost these rants somewhere that will get far more exposure. Ideally, in an area where the less-aware are likely to actually read them.
