    • Buff Buddies - WEEK ZERO & more than getting fit

SailorTweek FIRST Member Star(s) Indication of membership status - One star is a FIRST member, two stars is Double Gold RTX Head Guardian

      Before we start:

*I know what is right for me based on listening to my body, being aware of my limits, and past experiences with professionals. You should consult a professional before you start on the heavy duty stuff. For instance: Calorie counting might sound great, but might not be the path for you. We could go on and on about this, but the bottom line is that you should not go into physical fitness or nutrition blindly. Do your research so that you are safe, healthy, and happy.

*There is NO instant gratification to getting fit, losing weight, or building endurance. It takes time. Be patient.

What a strange and awesome coincidence that Buff Buddies is happening around the time I have scheduled to revisit my nutritionist.

Chris and I were doing really well with our nutritionist. We learned new things, established new habits, and we had a sense of accountability and support when having someone to report our progress to.

Our nutritionist's goal was to give us the tools and set us on our way after a certain period of time. Once we were left to our own devices, we tried pushed back that need for weekly praise and did an "alright" job of it. There were slip ups here and there, but nothing that would damage our progress.

Until last Christmas. After my father-in-law passed away (and then his mother soon after), our families were in a state of emotional tornado category F3. The new nutritional habits were put on hold...or so we intended.

As 2015 began to unfold, things got worse: More deaths in the family and community, a huge change in local convention responsibilities, and tons of other emotional bullshit. Eating comfort food and losing ourselves in video games (instead of getting physical exercise) were our ways of coping. We did some amazing things this year, so it wasn't all horrible! However, even those amazing things (New York City, Alaskan cruise, PAX South, RTX, Weird Al concert) brought around our bad habits. Who wants to "eat responsibly" when you're in a new place where FOOD is AMAZING? Our hotel in NYC was in Hell's Kitchen for cryin' out loud! And Texas food is like...ok. I'm getting ridiculously hungry just thinking about it.

Anyhoo. Our eating habits went back to "hand-to-mouth" and "emotional crutch-style" dining. The weight and progress we made under the caring eyes of the nutritionist went completely tits up. Now that our convention season is over and we've moved into the new house, it's time to continue our change. New environment calls for new habits (I have granite counter tops which means a whole different way of cleaning and care; new neighborhood means new routes and so on) so let's back into the nutrition habit. We have a practically empty fridge and a pantry that we have not filled with shit yet...

We're not the kind of people who say "Oh, I'll wait till the New Year!" or "I'll wait to the beginning of the week/month/cycle/moon phase" If you keep waiting for the beginning of something else, YOU will never begin. Too many people in my life tell me "Yeah. I have to change my *insert lifestyle choices* soon. I'm going to start next *insert date/time/season/planetary alignment here*" ...and they all have yet to start. Now is the PERFECT time. We don't have to struggle through our environment and the holidays are really easy to handle.

WHY: It's a little bit of everything:

      • Clothing shopping is a horrifying experience.
      • Diabetes, obesity, and high cholesterol run in my family
      • My favorite old cosplays don't fit anymore
      • I get winded going up my own stairs. We live in a townhouse. I'm doomed.
      • My convention endurance is suffering
      • My emotional needs to improve

BUFF BUDDIES: There's more of that accountability and support! And right in here in the most important community in my chubby, lil' world! <3

Buff Buddies video - Week Zero

      Josh's Buff Buddies post

I don't have any designs at this time to see a personal physical trainer (I used to see one, so I still have that knowledge and experiences to work from). Our mortgage is over here in the middle of the room screaming '"PAY ATTENTION TO MEEEEEEE" and so our budget is a little preoccupied. I do, however, have a few exercise ideas to play with that I know are safe and will get my ass moving into better habits, better shape, and a better outlook.

No schedule yet, but I will be utilizing Yoga With Andriene videos to get me back into stretching and flexibility. I have Zombies, RUN loaded back onto my phone. I don't run, but I love walking!

I found this interesting concept on my Facebook feed:

      12107905_882748185106614_364594442810689

My name has so many options: MARY * MARY LOUISE *MARY MCDOWELL *MARY FRANK *MARY LOUISE MCDOWELL *MARY LOUISE FRANK

And then you can use your online names: SAILOR TWEEK *JAXSEN VENTURE

I am personally replacing wall sits with push ups & bicycle crunches and cutting burpees in half for now.

FOOD JOURNAL: I have been tasked to make a food journal for my nutritionist.

I will do this from today (Friday) to next Tuesday. The nutritionist will be speaking to us on Wednesday. Now, this begs the question: Do I try to change everything now and make my journal look awesome OR do I eat what and how I have been the last 12 months so she can gauge my needs better?

With Extra Life happening tomorrow, I will have the weirdest food journal. I usually eat very well and very healthy for gaming marathons because I want to be alert, entertaining and last as long as possible without pushing too hard. But, I know that I am about to start my period which means my body and carvings will be as indecisive as a colicky toddler. Hooray.

My nutritionist not only wants to know the what food we eat and how much, but she's fascinated by how it exits the body. She's super chill when asking "How's your poop this week? Describe it to me"...and I have no trouble telling her. WHICH IS WEIRD BECAUSE I DON'T TALK ABOUT MY POOP! EVER.

      Hehehehehe. Poop.

MOOD: My self esteem has taken a beating this last year. it's not like people have come to me with insults. It's pretty much self-inflicted. My body image ranges from "Chubby is cute and my husband loves me and our sex life is pretty fantastic" to "why bother plucking my chin hairs or even going outside? I'm disgusting and would rather hide than go clothes shopping" Pajama pants and hoodies are in style, right?

My job prospects do not exist and most of the jobs I have interviewed for see my volunteer work as "invalid" because I was not formally paid...as if being paid is the ultimate verification on whether your experience means anything to anyone other than yourself. I could write a god damn paper about my feelings on this...

Rather than sit here and light my resume on fire in effigy, I have embarked in educating myself in topics that I hold near to my heart: Tech, Community Management, convention work (doesn't really have a title since "Event Coordinator" in professional non-convention circles means "Wedding Planner"), and brushing up on acting education. Going back to school would be AWESOME, but I need to take this at a responsible pace. As much as I would love to jump into every new habit puddle, I should take it slow to avoid falling (and drowning) in a sea of responsibility that I can not tread.

The other thing that has affected my mood is being a housewife. Not the title or responsibilities, but the loneliness. All of my local friends are at work and my online friends are far away. There's no "hey, let's catch lunch" possibility in my current situation. However, this could be turned into a positive with the fitness & education goals in hand. I can focus on these goals with ease. Also, Buff Buddies will be part of my social life! Also (even though it i not the most physically fit activity) I will be aiming for more streaming soon.

PROGRESS SO FAR: On board with the nutritionist - food journal day 1 is today - grocery shopping Sunday with a list of foods we know (from our first time around) of what to buy - recording water - have devoured first 2 chapters in my CompTIA A+ text book - outlook is hopeful and determined

      Starting weight: 225 lbs.

Goal weight: Let's shoot for 170 lbs and see what we can accomplish.

Overall goal: To feel better and look healthier. To not make promises that I cannot keep. To start/stay at a manageable pace.

Hey peeps! I'm one of the thousands of people participating in Extra Life this year.

      Mary's Extra Life page

When: Saturday November 7th Noon PST till I pass out. Will make up time November 8th and 9th if needed. I may also do another 24 hour day before Christmas. Extra Life donations are open until December!

Where: My Twitch channel! (I was hoping to be at Rooster Teeth this weekend, but my mortgage insisted I stay home) I will not be streaming the entire time because I do love watching the Rooster Teeth stream while I game...an I cannot be entertaining for long stretches of time. That's no dig on me. It's more along the lines of I will fall deep into the game and ignore the chat.

Who: I'm on the Rooster Teeth team for the 3rd year in a row and I will be gaming for Seattle Children's Hospital.

What: I'm thinking Bioshock franchise all day with short snippets of World of Warcraft garrison missions and dailies. What's my goal? A HUGE $2,000 I hope I can make it there...but I cannot do it alone!

I will have a few prizes to give away such as:

What is it about being a new place that makes you want to change?

Not change into something that you are not or have a quarter-life crisis, but wanting to change habits and adopt new ones. Sometimes, it's a sense of "Let's pretend that I belong here. Where would I hang and feel most at home at? How would I hold myself in this space? How would I approach things?"

I experience this every time I go to a convention in a city I'm visiting. New York city had this profound effect on me. I want to give credit to the fact that many of my favorite movies and television shows take place there. Being a type of cornerstone of US civilization also had a hand in that. When I wandered Times Square by myself, I felt a sense of calm and ease. It was crowded as fuck and the visual of Times Square was overwhelming to say the least, but my posture was perfect and my stride was confident because I just method acted my ass through the maze of tourists.

When I come back home after these trips, I still feel that sense of "Wow. I was in a whole new world experiencing new things and I wasn't my neurotic self! I want to continue this high...let's do new things here at home!!"

These "new things" range anywhere from rearranging furniture to buying a new outfit to establishing 1 new habit (Dear God, face masks once a week is an incredible thing...why did no one tell me this! I've been using a face mask, like, once a month!!!) to deleting an old habit (Fuck shaving my legs every 3 days. It's winter and I'm 36 and no one cares)

Or, a "new thing" can be moving into a new house.

And not just new to you. I'm talking so new that the walls were still wet with paint when you moved the first box in. This house feels like the gateway to more new things.

Now, this is not the first new house I've owned (not a brag; just a fact) and I had this feeling once before...but at a much quieter level. The first house @sirNARVY and I bought together (the one we just moved out of) was a terrific experience and we had that sense of "Look at all the new things we can do/feel/establish!!" but at a much calmer level than I feel right now. 5 years ago, we hadn't traveled as much as we have now. RTX 2011 hadn't happened. We'd never thought of traveling out of state for a convention or to visit "internet friends". As of now, we've done all of that AND MORE.

So, combine the new surroundings with the new experiences and you have yourself a strong brew that inspires.

And that brew has taken effect already. I've mapped out some new and important habits (mostly centered around organization and taking real good care of these granite counter tops), explored the new neighborhood, delighted in my lack of transit options (hey, it keeps me from buying stupid shit at the mall and eating out for lunch), and have enjoyed the silence of this particular part of town (with the exception of the house construction, this area is so wonderfully quiet with it not being on top of I-5)

The computers are set up in an area of the house that we prefer. We have tons of room that may never be filled (filling our house full of stuff is not a goal). The cats adjusted super quick. Even with the familiarity of our belongings, everything feels new. A fresh restart.

I'm looking forward to riding this wave for as long as possible.

      Guys.

      GUYS.

New York City was AMAZING. It was everything the movies portray it to be (sans Stay Puft Marshmallow Man). The food was heavenly, the sights and sounds were of another world, and the smell wasn't even that bad. We walked the shit out Central Park, Times Square, and the Intrepid. We scratched the surface of what NYC had to offer...I am so looking forward to going back for more sightseeing, the museums, and maybe even a Broadway show. And Rockefeller Center...really want to be at the top of the Rock.

Many of my NYC photos can be found on my instagram account. I will be adding more photos a little later.

ReedPop put us up at the Yotel. I like the Japanese capsule-like hotel set up. All I need is a bed, a shower, and a place to store my crap. Yotel was all that AND located in Hell's Kitchen and a short walk to Times Square.

New York Comic Con was...different. I knew that is was going to be huge, but policies & strategies & expectations were very different from any other ReedPop show I've ever been to/worked on/worked at. Granted, I had nothing to do with the show this year other than being there and working a purchased booth, but I was still close to that crew and took note of the way the show existed. There was much drinking and rejoicing at the end of the show...more in victory than in "Holy fucknuts, we survived!!!" I certainly learned a thing of 5 from my friends who wore the black shirts that weekend. <3

Oh, that booth I was talking about...the booth with one of the longest lines on the expo floor?

      Rooster Teeth Productions, baby.

I had the honor to work the RT booth again. I have never been more in my element than selling shirts and bantering with fans. Working alongside Chelsea was an absolute blast! I would like to thank her publicly for putting up with my rambling. ;) I met new friends, old friends for the first time, and that @SuburbanFire guy still gives the best hugs after not seeing him for a hundred years. Seeing you all and meeting you all ... I love you all so damn much <3

The amount of support and love for RWBY was INTENSE at this show. A woman from Japan, who insisted in holding my hands in friendship <3, explained to me how popular and well received RWBY is in Japan. The appeal of RWBY has spanned from children to full grown adults with disposable incomes...of all different colors and shapes and cultures...it was tremendously touching to see RWBY touch so many people.

One of these days, I'll have to tell you all about the guy who came by the booth before the hall opened who tried to convince me that our "little company we got going here" could "make some real money" if we hired his marketing firm or whatever the hell it was. He shrunk about 2 feet when he found out the McFarlane Toys make the RWBY figures...and then shrunk more when I explained what Rooster Teeth actually was...it was kinda fun to bust out my saccharine airline stewardess voice.

I was able to step away room from the booth to see some of the Thrilling Adventure Hour cast. Paul F. Tompkins is a DELIGHT and a national treasure, you guys. Hal Lublin remembered me from Twitter and our mutual ties with Shannon McCormmick and my childhood buddy Lindsay Evans. Mark Gagliardi wrote "ONUS" on my Thrilling Adventure Hour concert DVD cover. John DiMaggio remembered me from when I was his PA at Rose City Comic Con AND wants me to PA for him again if he comes back to Rose or Emerald in the future. I have to hand it to Paul F and John Hodgeman for smiling sweetly through my socially inept fangirling. True gentlemen. I am sad that I missed meeting Marc Even Jackson and Paget Brewster, but I am heart-bustingly grateful to have met the above persoanlities <3

The Thrilling Adventure Hour - on iTunes and Podbay

      We Got This podcast

Whew...I'm exhausted. We're moving into the new house next week! Chris and I did the Home Owners Tour yesterday and everything looked pretty damn perfect. For now, I'm still at my parents' house recouping from a long week and getting ready for the next adventure.

I updated my Extra Life page with the lofty goal of $2,000 Not sure if I will be streaming from our new house or if I will be crashing the Rooster Teeth stream in Austin...we shall see <3

Wrapping this up. Time for a hot shower on this cool Fall day.

      Love you peeps.

By law, most conventions requires that anyone underage be accompanied by an adult. If you are under 18, then you need someone 18 or older to be your chaperon. The best person to ask is whoever is in charge of handling RTX. Last year, that was Gus and Griffon.

lol, I had made the whole connection between you and Malcolm McDowell a while ago but that whole rant just came together last night when I came across your TF2 image and looked at your surname once more.To which my mind immediately went to
"McDowell = Fallout 3 AI, hence Caboose's line 'Gay Robot',"
From there I just immediately tried to expand on a crackpot-style train of thought to see how far I could take Malcolm's career and compare it to Caboose's line. smiley4.gif

Tweek, I have unravelled the conspiracy! You thought you could hide the truth, but I've figured it out! What conspiracy you ask? Well, just read on:

Sailortweek's real name is Mary McDowell, coincidentally she shares her surname with an actor named Malcolm McDowell who played an evil AI in Fallout 3... He also played Caligula in the film of the same name, a man who was known for having homosexual relations... Hence... Sailortweek is a gay robot.

I don't like it being in the avatar, and I didn't see a problem with the old system. It's just something that was clearly stolen from Facebook so that new people can see who's online easier. That's bullshit. We are bending over backwards for the Facebook crowd instead of for the loyal fans who have been here.

Should I post it anywhere in particular or just on my page?

It was nice to finally meet you, I've been a Tweek fan girl for some time, I'm just very shy. I hope you make it to the next one! smiley13.gif

      Why thank you!

As for the reminder of the poster, I think there's a chance that you'll have to remind me. I'm processing a lot of information in my head nowadays, what with this game design internship and all.

Plane tickets. I has 'em. I can confirm that I will be at PAX. ^_^

Now, about that poster... I'll have to extract it from my aggregate poster tube for delivery to you (courier or otherwise). Do you know if airlines will allow standard sized poster tubes in carry-on?

Mary I wondering if you could do me a little favor. You might not be aware but a game was released last month called Earth Defense Force: Insect Armageddon. Not a very good game, but I got some enjoyment out of it. Well Geoff and Jack failed to mention it on AHWU. I sent them both messages pointing out their lapse but neither have taken notice I guess. I know you have a bit of pull. Think you could let one of them know? I'm sure they'd listen to you over me.

Not a big deal, just wanted the guys to know. smiley0.gif
