      Things will be different...

      gta4logo4yq4.jpg

      Things will be different. Yeah...
The thing is it doesn't FEEL different! The engine itself, despite whatever Rockstar says it is, simply looks like an upgraded version of Renderware. Don't believe me? If you're a veteran GTA player you'll notice that the draw distance hasn't really changed, and that buildings in the background still look like a sprite, despite Rockstar adding more blur. The character models don't look too much different from San Andrea's cutscenes...just a few more polygons dotted around the place (like the hands and mouth), I swear my out of date PC can run it! But all it does is look as if GTA 3 had a bumped up San Andreas engine, with character models that resemble the ones from Max Payne (with physics that look as if it came from Max Payne too despite Rockstar talking about the euphoria engine and whatnot) - you can see that some of the objects look as if they were ripped from older GTAs, just with a higher res. The rate at which more detailed models and textures "pop in" is horrible. The loading times are lengthy. Combined with the fact that most storefronts have a photographed "interior" as a texture for the window, I was kinda hoping for more. Did you know that EA also owns Renderware? It's as if EA wanted Rockstar to develop the next Source engine from it. Coincidence? I think not!

      *takes a deep breath*

Okay...maybe I let myself get a bit toooo carried away there. Still, glad to get that little rant out of the way. For all GTA 4's shortcomings (which is just about, as I have emphasised above, technical; although I do hate the occasional street chase), it's understandable. Also it's not Rockstar's fault for the "popins" (due to M$'s insistence on supporting HD-less 360s, even barring those that have them from a few enhancements). Rockstar was trying to build a massive game world, and if you want a "next gen" GTA game, I guess it's worth it.
Anyway this game is great...although the controls do take a bit getting used to (from playing other games such as Mass Effect and Halo where mappings for reload, and a moveable camera that "chases" the player instead of being fixed to its new position), and taking cover is not as intuitive as Gears of War or Rainbow SIx Vegas; it is as great as ever, if not almost perfecting the GTA formula. Every vehicle has a purpose, and WILL be used (I'm looking at you Crackdown!), and there's a load of exploration to be done. Unfortunately moving to other parts of the game world when you're not "supposed" to will result in a six star wanted level (wtf, San Andreas only had 4. What the hell do the police want with you anyway, and why are gangsters always insisting on downing bridges, so that hitmen like the GTA 3 guy can get away???), which is a shame.
And the game world itself...it just feels so alive - in fact you should be able to class this game as a city simulation (for the range the draw distance can allow). There are times when you would just want to walk along the streets like everyone else, instead of running, so you can "fit in"; if not running into the middle of a group of people having a conversation, and shoving them all apart for the lulz. And some of the changes, believe it or not, are good too. The tidier HUD, although takes some getting used to, is a lot cleaner; doubling the time of a day's length makes things a lot less stressful; the GPS is great, beats having to check the map every few seconds for your waypoint in San Andreas; more realism in actually nicking a locked car; and the tension of escaping a police search zone is awesome too, since you can use the environment to your advantage - police cars cannot enter the park after all. Unfortunately you're not allowed to "surf" cars anymore, as Niko would just suddenly fall into a ragdoll (ala Crackdown style) before tumbling to the ground and losing a fair chunk of health.
The missions themselves are a lot less forced than previous GTAs, with a lot more impact on free roaming - i.e. at one point Niko had to turn around and help his cousin Roman whilst on an arranged date with a girl, with the girl later asking what happened. However you do get a ridiculous amount of ammo for your firearm the first time you get it. The mobile phone is also a great addition since the game almost completely revolves around creative uses for it.

It's a fantastic game that I'm just getting started on. Unfortunately my exams are near, and I won't be playing as much as I want to. But still, Mario Kart will have to wait. smiley8.gif

    • It's a Wii Wheel! Wa ha at's the point?

      Samx

      No seriously.

      nabehuta.jpg

What is the point? Sure it has weight, but it feels flimsy and imprecise...simply to put it, it's so f****** awful. The guy at GAME offered me another Wii Wheel for half price...f*** no! I'd rather have the game without the wheel (if it comes cheaper), even steering with the Wii remote is clumsy. Analogue stick ftw plz. My sister thought it was cool, and tried it out. Went back to a controller in minutes. Then again it's Nintendo trying to entice casual gamers to play.

So what's this for again? Oh yeah...

      e3-mrc_image01_logo_ad.png

First thing's first, everything's been bloody nerfed. Especially the new tracks, the old tracks are all right for drifting, but the new ones have more tighter turns making it almost impossible to get a more powerful drift. Speaking of drifting, that's nerfed too, for the casual crowd, and to prevent snaking, sure it works, well in theory, but I find that I keep bumping towards the sides, or going off road even if I try to drift like the game wants me too. Several of the items are weak too, especially the "POW" one, at least make it so that it's possible to avoid some items. Also the blue shell is as worse as ever.

The "tricks" are also cheap as hell too, for the CPU that is; it's hard to do it on a controller, since it's mapped to the direction pad rather than, say "x" or "y". It's as if they want Mario Kart veterans to fail at this game. In addition to that, the developers were a bit lazy too - they reused some of the models from Mario Kart Double Dash - not the tracks, the models for Mario and Luigi, for example, are exactly the same. You can't actually harm your teammates now in team matches, however there are a lot less customisation options for vs. mode, and you can't have 2 players racing through the Grand Prix anymore. Lame.

And the game looks awful on my HDTV - it's all washed out and blurry, I really need to invest in a component cable.

Everyone has it on their iPod/MP3 player. I'm shocked.

Oh yeah, and BST. More like B******t. Do we really need it, it's already light at six for f***s sake. Changing all the clocks in your house is a waste of time. Well at least I don't own a clock museum. That must suck.

But on the plus side, I'll know that the RT server will come offline at 11 AM again.

...get an elite console for free and £20 ($40) back.

    • Darn technology, always seems to fail.

Apparently my 360 keeps crashing, it's not even a year old yet smiley2.gif , and so close to GTA 4 too. There's no red ring of death, it just crashes about several minutes into gameplay (mostly when enemies appear). I'm not sure what seems to be causing the problem, I keep my 360 well ventilated, and it's definitely not the disc drive (crashes on demos on the hard drive too). I'm just wondering what's the best solution.

It crashed on R6V2, ME, H3, COD4, DMC4 (demo). Interestingly enough, it seems to crash almost always whenever there's a huge number of enemies, and the screen freezes, or turns blue for Mass Effect, or green for Halo. (Seems as if it's trying to say something).

So what's the best choice, any remedy I can do now (I heard someone dangled the brick it on a piece of string, I moved my power brick to somewhere cooler, no luck there); get M$ to fix it (I need to know what the pitfalls are, and whether or not you need a RROD in order to get it fixed); or should I take it straight back to Curries (where I bought it)?

Update: Disconnected the hard drive, put in COD4, froze a few minutes into training. Took the disc back out, red quadrants, yup 3 of 'em. Ah frick.

    • This. Is. Vegas!

      Samx

      rainbow-six-vegas-2-logo-49.jpg

Yeah I got Rainbow SIx Vegas 2. Bought it from GAME today. But there's 2 main things about this game:

      * It hasn't really changed (whatever happened to expansion packs? At least Half Life has the balls to admit it's being released in episodes.).
      * It wants to be COD4.

The campaign's fun, but like I said it's not a whole lot different, except you hold down a lot more buttons if you want to change stuff like selective fire, or silencers etc. However my main complaint with this lack of change, is that everything, from the elite identity thingy, to the character models, to the animations (Bishop's is exactly a mirror of Logan, in fact I bet there's a way to make him look like Logan too/duh character creation thing), to the voices (cue terrorist repeated yells of "Oh shi-" and "I'm outta ammo, reloading", or even "Okay I'll cover your ass"; and Jung's "Get behind cover!").
The voices especially get on my nerves now, since R6V1 lacked any real variation between terrorist voices (I swear it's the same guy for all the terrorists in Vegas), and Ubisoft can't be arsed to add a couple of new voices. However Michael now sounds as if he's got lung cancer, he sounded cockney in R6V, but now he sounds like some old aristocratic pipe smoking geezer. And then there's Bishop...his voice is too raspy and void of any emotion. To be honest I prefer Logan, even if you could choose what Bishop looked like. Maybe I'm being a bit too nostalgic though - certainly shows due to the fact I'm dressing my team in pale blue clothing, black armour; speaking of which, it's a nice touch for the squad to match your threads. At least the gun stats have been rebalanced, making the FAMAS more useful (due to its high penetration), however I'm still finding I'm using the SCAR and Scout Tactical, which was with me for most of Vegas 1. Too bad the SA80 L85A2 and AWP L96 are locked from the start, I was really looking forward to using those rifles.

And yeah, like I said, the game desperately wants to be COD4. More than COD4 wanted US marines to use SWAT tactics. Sprinting, points for killing people, the "ACES" system, some UAV scanner thingy, shooting through walls penetration smiley6.gif . Except it takes ages just to level up.

And the voice commands don't seem to work any better, well, at least for me.

Yay it's been 2 years since I signed up onto this site! How time flies by!

    • Ranting time.

      Samx

It's Friday, and it's the day when I usually head down to the shops and buy a new game or two with my hard earned cash...until teh intersnetz came along with horrible horrible Virgin Zavvi and their cheap cheap prices. Well not anymore. I went down to my local game today for possibly the first time in a whole year to purchase two new games (yay!).

      Mainpage-logo.jpg

First off is Mass Effect. Yep, I ordered the limited edition ages ago on December the Tenth for Christmas. And then it got delayed. So I had been waiting patiently for a whole month for it to be dispatched. And then it got cancelled. The URL now links to a 404 on Zavvi's website. B*******. Last time I'm ordering from them for a while.

Anyway so far the game is fun, played through the first mission. Shame about the graphical hitches and horrible loading times, wish Bioware had a little longer with the game. I also hate the linearity of how the mission parts are shaping out. It should have been more open. But yeah that would have been confusing. Speaking of confusing, I actually mistook the compass north of the radar for where the next mission objective was. So I ended up going in completely the opposite direction from where the research camp was supposed to be before realising my error. I actually thought the film grain effect was a malfunction of my TV before finding it in the video settings...lawl.
Conversations are fun anyhow, but it does sound a lot of it was taken from Oblivion - Shepard always says, "Tell me about <insert subject here>." Could have had at least a more varied query.
And I called my Shepard "Adrian"...hahaha.

      aw1sj9.jpg

Hooray for not coming out of the loo for a whole month now! It's addiction time again. I picked up Advance Wars Days of Ruin Dark Conflict (wtf is up with that, someone else stole Days of Ruin???) today. It's definitely Advance Wars, just with more balance (thank goodness). And the gritty new art style. But it still has the irritating parts of the old Advance Wars, namely little pre-pubescent girls who think that whole armies are their little toys...sigh when will they ever learn. The battleship is a total joke. Also the Admiral of the New Rubinelle army is such a son of a b****, don't move your "APCs Mobile Workshops", don't move your "Landers", don't move your "Flares", I mean STFU and let me do my job, and stop standing in the way of my ports - just, just charge suicidally at the enemy, or something, and be done for you fat obese d***weed. smiley7.gif
      But still a good game.

Yeah I would brag here. Unfortunately Super Mario Galaxy has got to wait before I fully complete it. Stupid Sims exams taking up my precious time.

I don't really know how they're incorporated in modern games. Have you ever played Deus Ex? They have an upgrade system "in a box" type, and it's one time use. I want the insides like that, but to have detachable secondary fire weapons and stuff. I think it would clog the system memory if it were to be included in the form of variables, I don't really know how else it would work though.

    • Stepan

yeah like a drag and drop interface. Here's a list of upgrades for a generic assault rifle:
      A> SECONDARY
      1. grenade launcher under barrel
      a.smoke grenade
      b.shrapnel grenade
      c.cumulative (AP)
      d. thermobaric*
      e. plasma/napalm
      2. shotgun (like MAUL for m4)
      a. regular shells
      b. the one with one giant bullet
      c. acidic capsules (like liquid pills, when they hit, they "dissolve")
      B>SCOPE
      1.Optical
      2.Digital
C>INSIDES (upgrades in a box kit)
      1. light parts
      2. rate of fire
      3.accuracy
      D>SILENCER
      E>BARREL
      1.regular
      2. conditioned (allows better accuracy for automatic fire)
      F>Buttstock
      1. absent
      2. normal
      3. with recoil reducers (springs)
G>Ammo container (forgot what it's called in english)
      1. regular.
      2. elongated.

    • Stepan

maybe. I need some help on the weapons. I got a generic assault rifle with various upgrade systems that resembles an akm. I think that weapons should be very customizable, since there can't be an entire arsenal of weapons in the game.

I don't plan on making it super fancy like crysis: first of all it takes a lot of people to make complex systems, secondly not everyone can afford that much money on a game machine every year. I would say 2005-06 graphics by today's standards. If later, than it might move to 2007-08. Where am I going to get so much money to sponsor it? unless it's a volunteer type thing.

    • Stepan

Why? I mean, it would be a really good feeling to catch the thief red handed. And if the place was populated you can attack him (not kill him though), without getting attacked. And the theif would have to be there at the location to steal it. Depending on his range of visibility, and direction. Say around 2 radians, and 20 meters. Of course having the random chance that someone will find and take it is realistic, though it will be probably very annoying to players. So if that were to be included, it would have to be non-quest items only.

    • phoenixman

      Its not dedication trust me.

    • Stepan

Yes, but i think it would still need no complex equations for that matter. If it is a critter: he can't take it. If it is hostile NPC, he takes it. Neutral: he doesn't take it/takes it (depending on difficulty level), friendly: doesn't.
