So I'm officially skint...but er I got my presents early yay!

Well let's talk about the games I received huh.

      mario_galaxy_logo.png

Brilliant game in general. Best graphics EVAR for the Wii, or at least on such hardware (actually looks a lot better than Sunshine's pre rendered cut scenes), without going overboard on the "bloom" effects. However I do have a couple of complaints with it. First of all that bloody camera, sure it's fine most of the time, but what irritates me is when you do want to move it, most of the time you can't, even though the manual says you could. This makes it annoying when you can't see up ahead. Or when the camera does decide to look at something completely different. But I guess it's handier than having to move it all the time in previous 3D Mario games. Controls are very Mario 64, although I do wish for the slide attack to return, it was fun spamming "B" all the time in Sunshine, that said there should have been more uses for "crouch" instead. Sound is phenomenal but the lack of voice acting certainly sucks, considering how everyone spoke during cutscenes in Sunshine, it was weird hearing Bowser say "rawr rawr rawr". These also should have been a better co-op mode (i.e. split screen hint hint). Managed to finish the story so far. Hopefully I'll ace this soon enough.

Got this as part of the Orange Box for the PC, had the option to not install Half Life 2 or Episode One though, so that's a plus. The game is as brilliant as ever, although what they did "claim" as wide open areas was still pretty linear...guess it's all the atmospheric scattering. Also who the **** is Magnusson? Sure I burnt someone's casserole back in Half Life, but he didn't look even remotely like Magnusson. And everyone acts as if they know him when he was hardly...actually not mentioned at all in previous Half Lives. Also I have some complaints on the way Valve handled technical parts of the game...why oh why did you build this specifically for dual cores? Half Life 2 and Lost Coast ran fine on high when it was tailored for 3Ghz Pentium 4s...so why was it so focused on dual cores that I had to run Episode 2 on such low settings??? Wish there was an option to tell the game you only had one processor and to lay off all the fancy crap for the second...that or I cooould get a new PC.
On a side note I found a little glitch...in the part where you had to shut off the forcefields for the Combine roadblock, you can actually blow the "Comboing energy ball" out of the generator, stick a barrel drum in, have the ball fizzle out, and still have the generator up and running without a ball...and be royally screwed.

      birthday-cake-773619.jpg

Yay cake! I do love cake! Oooooh, I love a bit of cake! I'm just one of these people. I come home and I need a piece of cake. Cake cake cake!
Fun game. Although a tad short (hooray for challenge chambers and the ability to add and download more maps!). But yeah, I'm glad it ended where it did, otherwise it would have dragged on quite a bit (you know towards the end I thought it would be over soon, turns out Aperture Science is quite a big and scary place). Similar technical issues for my hardware, mainly to do with the specular lighting, but it didn't hinder gameplay too much.

Huh, Virgin still hasn't delivered my copy of Mass Effect...been backordered for ages, but that's what you get when you order the collector's edition when it's £38.

1000 GS in COD4! (Yeah this was around a month ago, but it does seem pointless to dedicate a whole journal for bragging about it).

Shame, so many games and not enough time to play 'em all *rants about stupid exams in January*.

And er yeah Merry Christmas everyone! (Or Happy Holidays if you're politically correct.) So what did everyone else get?

      call-of-duty-4.jpg

Oh look Virgin, you're late in delivering it again! Ah well.

The game's good fun, and is pretty nicely paced, but it does also have the bad points of the COD series as well - it's too linear, and there's the problem of countless enemies spawning, unless you make your way into an objective...which sucks, but at least it wasn't as bad as before. But at least it plays differently from BF2 (although the Middle Eastern parts look very much like parts of it). But there's too much special ops style action, it's excusable for the SAS, but this is Call of Duty not Rainbow Six for US Marines! But the graphics are pretty and the gameplay still works well. Haven't tried multiplayer yet, but if it's just like what I played in the beta then I'm sold. And people who're complaining for larger battles, go play BF2 special forces...you get the SAS vs Spetsnatz. COD4 Tactical playlist with 6 - 8 players ftw.

It's win playing as the SAS, but I think that they're too...um...stereotyped? Well fair enough it's made in the US, with a US point of view of the British, but who else goes "I like to keep this for CQB." "Too right!". I friggin lol'd. And why would they dress up as if they're going fishing...to fit in?...They've got guns! Regardless, the SAS still pwns all (though they are a bit ruthless shooting guys in their sleep).

Also how the hell does Captain Price live...isn't he like...er... 100 now?

I've also got the DS version of the game! Great fun for when I can't be at my 360! It plays like COD 4 for the most part, except you're with an alternate squad rather than the main one in the console version, so it's basically a slightly different story. However somehow you take way more damage than necessary (before the screen turns red) and the only way you can kill enemies effectively is with a headshot (otherwise they just eat up half a clip). But the sound is fantastic for the DS, and it's almost like the console version in which the AI shouts out enemy positions etc. The spectre gunship mission, which is operated with the touch screen (surprise! 0_o) is simply cool. However there's no online play which sucks, but it's still worth the extra £20.

100% (including scans) on all 3 Metroid Prime games (4 if you include Hunters), bitches! Ha!

Silly Virgin, they're late by 4 days, it's first class post for crying out loud. Well, I did want to save 5 quid instead of ordering from Game. But yeah, I've finally got it (stupid Nintendo taking ages to bring it to Europe).

Anyway it's quite fun so far, however the progress I'm making is a bit slow since I'm a scan whore (and as a result I was in scan mode most of the time). I'm glad I could change some of the settings such as switching around "fire" from A to B (stupid M$ and their point + click monopoly), and using the highest sensitivity setting. I'm also playing on Veteran since I heard Normal was pish easy. Graphics are pretty sweet too, but why oh why are developers insisting on giving games moar bloom lightingz?

Oh yeah and you can't exchange friend tokens between different regions (stupid PAL and NTSC, I mean wtf nintendo?). Well enough of ranting on.

And yay 1000 GS in Halo 3! W00t! I might play Rainbow Six Vegas some more now, so anyone up for co-op on realistic?

Yay Game posted Halo 3 today on release. (although the case is a bit dented grr...but otherwise working fine).

I'm first blasting through it on normal, then I'm gonna play on co-op on legendary, and completing it first allows unlocking of the meta gamez. Well if anyone wants to play, my gamertag is "mx54". I have to say the first few missions are a little short, although maybe on heroic and legendary there'll be "reinforcements", but the 6th mission is great fun reminds me a lot of assault on the control room.

I also created Master Chief in Drawn to Life, how awesome is that?

I now need to create a real flow chart with the story, and side missions. Some side missions WILL have to affect the main story to make it more interesting, or people will just fast-play it with out coming back to areas. I also don't want the player to carry around a whole slew of weapons on him, making him a tank. So the weight incumbrance will be have to be in effect. Depending on the armor type, there will be different maximum weights. But there will be places where you can store weapons (vehicles), and stashes. But just like in the real world: if someone sees you put it there- they might steal it.

    • Stepan

I know like in Fallout, right? But won't this create a sense of limitness? Besides, I want to have a couple flying missions, and vehicles. Maybe a combination of both can work: like Gothic 1 and 2 they had different "worlds", one was the main world, and a couple of underground places. But won't this take it long to load if you have levels?

    • phoenixman

I had that problem too, it kept asking me to install the latest flash player, which i did and then it wouldn't let me in. When I closed all other windows and then installed flash player it worked.

    • Stepan

Another problem that is bound to happen is levels. I really don't want it to have levels, make it have one unified world. Of course I would have to introduce a fast-travel system. Is there a way to create a map that is "glued" together with other maps and it loads according to your proximity to it, and not using most of the processor, allowing you to keep playing?

    • Stepan

not really. I think it can be done with a few biconditional variables.
for example: if player wears allied armor, then do not attack. If Faction size: >X, do not attack. Player seen by NPC -> NPC state [neutral=true], [NPCGuard=false]-[attack=false][talk=true]. I don't really know any programming codes, but i think VisualBasic is set up something like this. Again, this is not really refined, plus i can't do it in written format, i can better draw a diagram.

yes. But with so many people on Earth, he gets thrown in jail for the littlest reason. The whole "democracy" world has turned into more of a police state, with propaganda saying that it's against terrorism, and communists who want to end democracy. It didn't yet turn to police state, but civil liberties have been severely been limited. That's why people are thrown into jail for minor crimes (underage drinking included. :( Not that it refers to the story). We don't really know what the hero did to get arrested. This adds a little mystery, and we will keep the whole story like that, revealing little bits. We won't reveal all though, because of the possibility of a sequel IF it is successful (if it ever gets done).

I finished the third generation of power armor ;P

Yeah, but more defined, like in an RPG. If people see you hang out with one faction too much, they'll get accustomed. Oh and wearing a suit from a different faction will either a)reinforce their beleif that you're in another faction or b)throw them off to gain access or "diversant" operations.(if it's a large faction with many people. smaller factions will be harder to trick)

Well, i told you the backstory of the game already. Now the actual game. The game starts out with a hl2 sort of interactive cutscene, where the credits role as you walk onto the spaceship style cargo container (Earth, where the warp thing is) Starts out in sunlight, and creates a feeling of that you're going into someplace dark (tunnel). There are around 20 prisoners with you. Around 3 or 4 guards with charger prods. 1 pilot. The ship accelerates on rail tracks and then the space weapon is fired, and then there's a warp effect, and the ship, and everything inside it distorts into a point, and then vanishes. It reappears in space next to the planet that i drew (and where the action happens). The player sees a large formation of greenish clouds in "subtropical" latitude, and then sees that the space ship is actually going in there. [spaceship/cargo container crashes] Player is faced with choice with staying on the ship, or leaving (the spaceship landed in wrong spot than was planned). If he stays, a military convoy picks him up and he gets taken to a researcher facility. There he is given a couple quests, mostly very minor, because he "has to work for freedom", because this is an ultracapitalistic american facility. If he goes, then he finds a small outpost of nomadic hunters (which hunt exotic creatures, to be taken to researchers). Either way, he gets to the researchers, which permit him to use car to get to the nearest location. There will be a couple of different minor locations, and the final goal of the "chapter 1" is to get to the main base (the one i showed in my other picture). There he "registers" himself, otherwise he would be shot for "resisting the law". He finds that there are different factions, including underground communist movement, organized crime, regular police+army, the Sect (religious fanatics), hunter groups, mercs, and Independents (who want to sever ties with Earth). Eventually he has to join one of these (however this doesn't prevent him from doing some jobs for other groups). Just when the player gets used to this atmosphere of work hard- get new stuff and put himself out of financial poverty, something BIG happens. More on that later...g2g.

    • Stepan

Yeah, of course it is, and if you indeed "break the story" as you put it, the game should either force the player to leave, or "cut" the preceding part of the plot. You want to hear the next part of plot?

    • Stepan

given the right conditions, yes (such as you randomly find the best suit in the game the moment you start it. Which of course won't happen). Yes, the player will be free to visit different areas, instead of necessarily going to one. Like, you can go to one settlement, bypassing the other. Some won't be accessible though, just for the story's sake, otherwise it will be like Gothic 3 where you can visit any place and they will give you a quest not really depending on what you have done before. Don't get me wrong, Gothic 3 was a good game, but very beta-ish.

    • Stepan

Some populated areas will be blocked off, but only with like a military post. If you manage to sneak in, then kudos to the player. That is a very good "reward system", if the player (himself, not the character) learns to break into areas, then he will have early access to weapons and stuff. If he gets caught, there will be consequences. I actually thought of including a jail, but thinking that the game will be time limited in very few places I thought not. Some areas will naturally be closed off due to the environement (i.e. high amounts of radiation, heat etc), only accessible with proper gear. Some gear will be avaliable (but at a really high price), making the player do many side missions to get them, other gear will be given during missions (or found).

    • Stepan

i added the black texture as a cloth over which the suit will be worn over.

    • phoenixman

Ja, you still have infinite lives.

    • Stepan

Yes, most areas will be free roam (although there will be little to do there), and some areas (such as settlements) will have to be free roam- others only accessible by missions. Technically, i want the whole world accessible to the player, that is why there should be a couple generic maps that will have randomly scattered trees and stuff, creating an illusion that the player is free.

    • BlueYoshi15

That can be fixed easily. While your on the forum, you should see a filter bar near the top of the screen. Change the filter setting to off.

    • Stepan

Yes. On that note I'm pretty much clear. There will be developing quantum computers, but they won't be able to do much with "regular" geometry and calculations, that's why normal digital computers will be a lot more popular, and more avaliable. The whole idea of the game is to change from a functioning society, to a small period of mayhem and then into a totally different view of the same place. The game will start out more RPG than shooter, as access to weapons will be limited- thus making the player dependent on his fists and "cold" weapons. The system will NOT have elements such as leveling-up or magic type stuff. However, certain elements of mix and match armor, custom weapons etc. So the player's armament will develop from:
      1. fists and cold weapons (blunt objects, knives, thrown non-explosive objects)
      2. regular firearms (including those with electronic assistance)
      3. small vehicles, weaponless
      4. small vehicles, with weapons
      5. throwback to regular firearms, vehicles become rare.
      6. as player meets factions, access to new levels of weapons, heavy vehicles.
      7. Player will be mildly forced to leave vehicles behind

Well, let's say the atmosphere is kind of like that after WWI. Everybody's tired from the war, but not much has been destroyed. On earth there was a small localized nuclear war between India and Pakistan. China invades Japan. Then India and China destroy a couple of each others major cities with vacuum bombs (killing off about 80% of population on each side). This severely slows western economy, allowing the eastern bloc, which still has factories and a working class to get rich, thus shifting the world economy out of the U.S. and into Europe. Communism has been officially banned because they thought that China started the war, and many left wing groups were forced to go underground. Russia, experiencing an economical boom, starts rearming it's weakened army, and creates a new space based weapon. The "i haven't come up with a name yet" is gravitational field disrupter that requires massive amounts of energy (has a small fusion reactor on board). When it was tested in the Caucus Mountains, to many people the show was disappointing because the weapon did not work. So the generals gave a direct order to increase the output power. All of a sudden you see chunks of earth flying out of the ground hovering, then exploding into dirt that flies in different directions, and slowly the process speeds forward, and uncovers an ancient cave. The cave was seen to have ancient indo-european scripture, and that place was inhabited by a local ruler. Deeper inside, they found a large chamber, but within it, they find a peculiar site: a perfectly round hole that was still smoldering and the crater that was perfectly spherical. Later it was found out that the shape of the cave caused disruptions in the fabric of time and space, and when alligned with the gravitational disrupter, it created a warp effect to another place in space. It was found that it led to an asteroid that was floating nearby the planet that i drew. It had the mass of Earth, but was smaller, and there was a huge gash on the surface (i didn't draw it yet). 5 years later. They built a small base on the planet, 10 years, they built 3 (but no one knew exactly how many, but it's 3) large bases that were very self sufficient. They channeled all sorts of prisoners to the planet to help out with the terraforming and research. Eventually they installed a large scale antenna that was able to create the warp effect with the help of gamma waves, and this allowed communication between the two planets. <That's basically the whole intro right there.

the one on the left is supposed to be primitive exo skeleton- used for loading weights and stuff, while the one on the right is an early combat version, and the chestpiece at the bottom was unused for an idea of "advanced" exoarmor, which i still have yet to think of.

    • Stepan

Well, I haven't figured out about the engine yet. I guess it will have to be inhouse, because licensing is pretty expensive. I mean, the stage is very pre production. I've got the main idea down. A few concept art images, and now i need to develop it further into a clear storyline. I'm still kind of wary that someone will try to steal it so i don't really know who i can trust and the process with copyrights is a really long time. Of course making it GNU will solve that problem, but it will not bring in any profit. And sadly, we all need money. Oh yeah, i was going to add this, but then i forgot: the game is going to have only two or three cinematic endings- in which you win, the rest will be like a visual with a voice over telling about how you failed and stuff. Of course if you have any ideas on how to deal with the problem of people stealing ideas w/out copyright, ill be glad to know. What I really need right now is a small group of people who know what they're doing and perhaps with actual technical skills on the computer. I'll probably post an image online, that i actually drew in photoshop, but most of them are hand drawn sketches.

Yea, a lot of people don't know about Eurogames. There's at least a thousand board games you've never heard of, and they're all a lot more strategical and take a lot more thinking and such.
