A brief summary of what has happened since my tubes broke.

      Life has been awesome
Life has sucked more balls than Elton John.

      Thats all.

      Ranting will resume shortly.

    • To visit America or not to visit America

      Sawendro

Well, I just checked flights for next August, and BA will send me to LA, and then back from New York a month later for £627.40

      Thatsmore than two months wages.

And not including other travelling costs, like trains, buses, and whatever passes for a B&B over there.

SO, do I try and plan this trip, or do I forget it, and put the money towards Uni instead?

The Big Shatter explains the low entropy of our universe, and expalins why we may be expanding. Dark energy drives the expansion on until we shatter, and so on.

One of Many - The theory runs that this is one of the few universes that can support life. This is so because the conditions are exactly right for life to evolve here. However, detractors say that conditions are simply right for life analogous to us and that life can exist under other conditions. Detractors are supported by Topos theory (message me if you want to know more)

Big Bang - The standard model

Bubble - Our universe is simmply a relatively low entropy "bubble" in a sea of high entropy (posited that these are supermassive black holes) and that our bubble is being torn apart by the high entropy.

    • The Origins

      Sawendro

      Warning! I plan to ramble!

There is quite a voluminous amount of postulation of theories that explain the universe. Here, I will expound a few, for those of you that care.

Branes - Our Universe (of approximately 11 dimensions) sits on a brane, which is trans-dimensional. This brane governs all the natural and physical laws of our universe. When two branes collide, they change one another, and may create new universes. This can explain the increasing entropy (chaos) inherent in the observable Universe, as it may be "leaking in" from another brane

Expationalism - Shortly after the Big Bang (which this theory holds to) ,at approximately 10 to the power -34 seconds, the universe expanded rapidly. This created a largely homogenous universe, into which entropy occurs as chaos "catches up" with the universe. Supports the age of the universe.

"The Big Shatter" - When a universe ends, it has so much entropy that it shatters, creating multiple low entropy universes, which gain entropy, shatter and so on and so forth.

I'm tired now, so I think I might finish this later.

    • The Nature Of A God

      Sawendro

Before anyone can claim to believe (or not) in a deity, one must first define a deity. Without definition, there can be no deity. Although your definition should be personal, I will put forth mine.

I do not believe in a numinous form of god, or gods, that is watching and observing everything we do. Instead I think of a god as a socio-economic anomaly. Cynically, I do believe that gods were initially created to control the masses, through fear of the supernatural. Substantially, this has not changed. Modern religions instead try to impose moral and ethical standards on their followers to influence their behaviour and affect their judgement. But I think that it is these precepts and observances that define a religion, and, therefore, a god. By defining what the religion is, one can know the "god". It is these beliefs and values that give religions worth, not any supernatural authority figure.

Even so, absence of proof is not proof of absence; just because you can't see the bird doesn't mean it doesn't exist.. Its not my place to say there is or isn't a god, but I do think that expressing my thoughts may help someone else come to a new standing on religion, whether or not they choose to believe.

Furthermore, understanding does not deny belief. Belief is, ostensibly, based on faith and wonder. Just because I know that a rapidly fusing ball of hydrogen 8 light minutes away is raining solar energy on the atmosphere, causing air to expand, become less dense, rise draw more air in, thus causing wind doesn't mean I appreciate the breeze any less. I know how the effect is caused, yet that in itself can cause wonder. As I said, because I know, doesn't mean I can't believe.

    • Time

      Sawendro

Ticking away the moments that make up a dull day
You fritter and waste the hours in an off hand way
Kicking around on a piece of ground in your home town
Waiting for someone or something to show you the way

Tired of lying in the sunshine staying home to watch the rain
You are young and life is long and there is time to kill today
And then one day you find ten years have got behind you
No one told you when to run, you missed the starting gun

And you run and you run to catch up with the sun, but its sinking
And racing around to come up behind you again
The sun is the same in the relative way, but youre older
Shorter of breath and one day closer to death

Every year is getting shorter, never seem to find the time
Plans that either come to naught or half a page of scribbled lines
Hanging on in quiet desperation is the english way
The time is gone, the song is over, thought Id something more to say

      Home, home again
I like to be here when I can
And when I come home cold and tired
Its good to warm my bones beside the fire
      Far away across the field
The tolling of the iron bell
Calls the faithful to their knees
To hear the softly spoken magic spells.

Whats a messed up journal without some Pink Floyd lyrics?

Also, for us Brits, a brief excerpt from "The Now Show"

"Most Americans have guns; many with assault weapons with armour piercing bullets which they claim they need *effects poor Texan accent* "For huntin'" Let me ask you, how big do American deer get?"
"I am robo-deer, I am 50-ft of armour plated steel. I wish to nibble your roses. You have 5 seconds to comply."

      9. The actual reward is the sense of freedom and having a social life/lives back.
      10. No matter how hard you try, that extra 2% signal strength you need to connect to the internet is never going to arrive.

    • Existential Crisis

      Sawendro

How do we define real, or justify our existence? Is it defined by sensory perception, by rational thought or the ability to express abstract concepts? Is this really real? Are we just sitting somewhere daydreaming all of this?
My answer is that it doesn't matter really. This world is as real as we want it to be, the senses and the mind can be fooled, but what should make a "fake" sensory memory any less "real" than another? It is only how we define real that makes things real, if i cant touch it, see it hear it, it is real. Or is it? What if its an illusion, like 3D cinema? The concept may space you out a little, that we may not be "real" but when push comes to shove, it doesn't matter, reality is just what we want it to be.

Justifying existence tags on to that, and I believe that the Greeks got it (Plato, I think)
"I think, therefore I am" or roughly "Cogito ergo sum"
The ability to actually think, reason, believe, defines our existence although to others we never met, we don't exist, we know that we exist because we believe we do, I think, therefore I am.

I'm all done for now, but I'll probably edit this, make it clearer what I'm trying to say etc.

Hey there! This is a general comment going out to all the vets of the ATS thread.

I will be posting the new thread Monday (today) around noon EST. I'll announce in the current ATS thread when I'll be making the new one (to give everyone a chance to get ready), and then I'll link to it. We want to give everyone, all the vets, a chance to get one post on the first page. So I'm going to ask that everyone put together their one comment and let's not resume "normal" chat in the new thread until everyone's had a chance to have their say on the first page. So just post one comment and let everyone else get their comment in before we resume normal conversation. If crunchies come in, or if questions arise on the first page, we'll all sit on our hands and wait until at least the second page to address them.

You can put whatever you want in your comment -- favorite Simmons quotes, moments, theories, pairings, fanfictions, arts, etc. I'm going to suggest you put your comment together ahed of time in a notepad or something.

Let's also keep the talk about Simmons for as long as we can? smiley1.gif

      Thanks. smiley12.gif

I had already established that I wasn't going to prom early on this school year, saying "It's not that I can't get a date or I can't dance or whatever. It's because the people there have their final chance to make an ass out of me, and they will do whatever it takes to do it." Cause they're assholes like that. Always have been.
