This year has started with myself and Cappy having full-time employment we like, and which is paid a few dollars above minimum wage (we formerly both had minimum-wage, part-time jobs with no security in hours). This has done wonders for helping us to slowly get above the poverty line.

We're also agreed that after my mother passes on (I'm determined to stay and care for her until then), it's off to Japan to live and work and try a culture so very different to the ones we've tried so far. I'm confident I can get a teaching contract for Japan whilst in Canada so that they pay our flights and moving expenses, and set us up in Japan, with a fixed minimum required term of three years of teaching, since I have already seen such offers, but could not accept them at the time.

My resolution mid-2013 was to be happy wherever I was and doing whatever I was doing and believe that good things would come my way. It worked. The old adage "we create our own reality" is definitely true.

So my New Year's resolution is to believe that things will only get better. Oh, and to start Hapkido with my daughter (who's pumped to try the sword fighting, as am I), and maybe Cappy, if he can drag himself out of his apathy long enough.

      Happy New Years everyone!!

I have been complaining for ages that, since the last RT "improvement", pages load like molasses in January. Well, last night my hubby installed a new CPU on our comp. 8-core. Suddenly RT pages load in less than a second.

      Wheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!

You and Cappy might be interested to know that Jaxom is doing the 2nd/3rd (depending on what you count) round of his alternate-reality gothic horror Mafia game, signups currently running here.

If you want to get a feel for the alternate universe, you can check out round 1 here and round 2 here. I guarantee an interesting read...

Hey, you're an English teacher. How do you write a book? I've been trying to write "The Great American Novel" for like 1.5 years and after two chapters it always sounds terrible. My latest attempt is this paragraph and I already don't like where it's going...

I once read somewhere that drinking heavily in your teen years makes you more likely to have social anxiety issues. Fuckin' a, right? Just a thought, maybe I'd be different if I didn't. Laying in my bedroom, the ash of my lit cigarette falling onto my shirt, my record skipping and keeping me from drifting off because sleeping with a lit cigarette in your mouth is dangerous, or so I'm told I have a bed though, a record player, clearly I'm not in the worst position in the world, just in one in which I cannot be bothered to fix or change. A rut, if you will. It's 11 in the morning, should probably be at some sort of job or at the very least in the shower getting ready to find one. I know what I'm going to do though. I'm going to finish this coffee, pour another cup and go back in my room to jerk off a bit. Around two or three I'll shower and head to my friends house, probably pack a bowl and grab a few 211's. Good old Steele Reserve, the 40 of champions.

It's a recent novel, in fact it's the authors first published book.
Anyway, got a chapter in and decided I didn't like my book so I ended up recording a song.

Oh yeah, you might find interest in the books I'm using for inspiration.

The Sun Also Rises by Ernest Hemingway
The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald (being from long island it's mandatory for me to have read that book)
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas by Hunter S. Thompson
Kapitoil by Teddy Wayne (my favorite book ever)

      • LostNirvana

You actually mentioned one of the writers I'm seeking inspiration from. I've got four books on my desk, I'm kind of reading thru them as I progress so I can see how quickly they develop characters and ease other ones into the story. They're from different authors so I don't copy one too much.

The idea is a 20 year old stoner/alcoholic who cleans up and finds work in order to move down south and support a 24 year old woman and her son. In the end I'm thinking of having her cheat on him and then he just leaves. I don't want there to be closure, I want a sinking feeling in the readers chest like they just watched a someone die in front of them.

There are many different approaches to writing successfully. Stephen King, Jack Kerouac and Ernest Hemingway probably approach(ed) writing in very different ways. One key is to have a clear point to it all, so that the story you tell goes somewhere, even if it is to a post-modernist disintegration, leaving the reader disturbed and unfulfilled (that being the point...). Get clear on what message you want to get across then plan out how you want to achieve that.

Writing also doesn't have to happen linearly, that is from page one to the end. You can write scenes, events, etc. and then piece them together later on. Just be sure to use a consistent voice or perspective, until you consciously want to change it (if at all), and a consistent verb tense (past, present, etc.) until you want to change that (if at all).

You are taking the reader by the hand on a journey. Make sure you keep them wanting more and make sure you don't confuse them so much that they give up trying to understand what's going on.

        Hope this helps.

It's important to follow politics though, find ones who arn't going to vote in laws like the American SOPA and PIPA. I know Canada has laws like that too. Recently I took interest in the American candidate Ron Paul and I'm trying to get people to take interest in him because Obama ended up being corrupt just like the others. I feel like R.P. is too batshit crazy to take bribes though. I'm also thinking about going to community college and getting into the game myself. Senator Poppy has a good ring to it, no?

Besides that my life has been pretty boring. Last summer I was getting black-out drunk and making-out with midgets in my friends pool. Now I'm sober and looking for work because my winter job at Salvation Army ended.

Nostalgia sake, miss the old days of Asylum. No one's on skype anymore either so I can't exactly call badger. Plus I miss you specifically wink.png

Anyway, how are things? Been paying attention to the politics lately? If Ron Paul isn't our next president I'm checking out Canadian and Danish legislation and moving the fuck out when I get the scratch.

It's probably the most flexible creativity game on the market right now. You can - and are encouraged to - build practically anything.

There's this one guy who built a working computer on Minecraft... and another guy who (with mod assistance) had a screen in Minecraft mirroring another session of Minecraft. =P

    • TheRecreator

Just occurred to me to get back to you, re: Minecraft. It takes a surprisingly high amount of graphical horsepower to run it at max settings, despite the pixellated art style. Loads of dynamic lights, with all the user-placed torches - most modern games only ever have one affecting the user at any given time. Add all the shadows and the dynamic skylight, and you have a helluvalot of computations to do every frame.

I mean, sure, it's no artistic wunderkind, but Minecraft's no graphical slouch, either.
