Well, in the last two months, I've gotten a brand new job that I like, and suffered the loss of the best mother a son could ever wish for. Maybe I'll finally get around to being creative again...

    • Has it been a year?

Hi folks! Nope, still not dead, much to everyone's annoyance. Been busy with finishing up my long-overdue degree, which is going well. It's been pretty easy, but also a refresher in some things, too, so it's all good. Anyone even remember SvF anymore? Not really sure I still do, it's been soooo long. Check in and say hi if you're still not dead, too!

      Love,

      Hi guys,

Sorry to have been remiss in my journaling for the past weeks, just had a lot of stuff to sort out. Yes, Amanda and I are completely over and done with at this point. She's moved out to Spokane now and out of my life. We still speak occasionally, but the divorce is in the works, and that's all there is to it.

I'm doing all right, met up with some old buddies, made some new ones...thinking about what to do with my life going forward. I want to stay here in Middle Georgia, I just don't know how viable that choice will be job-wise.

Love you all, you've been a real comfort to me throughout the ordeal!
      Sev

    • Champions Online

      Sevenar

Back in the pen&paper days of RPGs, my all-time favorite was Champions. It was the only point-based system I've ever played where everything was truly balanced. Attacks, defenses, and characteristics were scaled very well on point value, so there were very few loopholes to exploit to create an imbalanced character. As long as everyone stayed within the campaign's point limits, it worked far better than any other RPG.

When I heard they were coming out with an MMORPG of Champions, I was thrilled. Then I found out that only the setting had been licensed, not the balanced game mechanics I had appreciated so much. Still, the open beta for CO is now underway, and I can honestly say this is the only other game besides WoW that I would consider buying a Lifetime Subscription to.

The devs were the same guys behind City of Heroes, and while I played that one to death because it was the only superhero MMO in town, it suffered from numerous problems. Repitition, no end-game, boring grinds, rigid power frameworks, etc. Refreshingly, the devs actually learned from their mistakes and made CO one of the more player-friendly games I've played yet. For example, when it comes time to level-up and add new powers/talents/points to your character, in most games you are stuck with what you pick, unless you pay gold or some sort of limited re-spec token to undo your mistakes. Not so with CO. When it comes time to levelup, you go to the Powerhouse, pick your particular upgrade, and then you can try it out on their practice dummy rooms first. If you don't like it, head back to the desk and undo it. You aren't locked in to your choices until you exit the Powerhouse. You can also tweak your powers to change the color of your energy blasts and on some powers, change what part of you they shoot out of. (within reason, and in good taste only)

The open beta runs until go-live (Sept. 1) and you can still get in on it. GameStop and Best Buy sell a $5 preorder kit that has a beta key inside, and you get little perks for buying these keys. It's worth five bucks to just take a spin in this one, and if you don't like it, well, you aren't out 50, at least.

Excuse me, I have to go deliver a mighty smiting to Dr. Destroyer....

Well, that didn't take long. Got laid off again after less than a month at the new job. This was after I'd signed a new lease, shelled out big for utilities and a move, only to be told "uh, sorry, we want to go a different direction." Two weeks severance, and out the door.

      Anyone hiring?

...but it looks like the supertanker of fail that has been my life recently might just be nudging closer to Port Win. My relationship with Amanda is much improved, and I found out today that I'm the preferred candidate for a sweet new job! Barring any unforeseen rocks in the water, I should get a formal offer some time next week.

The lesson for today is: Never give up hope--just don't spend the phat paychecks before you have the job in hand, either!

So now I've joined Facebook and MySpace, met up with some very old school chums, and played a bunch of pointless games. I kind of fail to see what the big deal is. I mean, Rooster Teeth has 90% of their functionality, so why bother with the other crap, really?

As far as relationships go, I'm despairing of finding another. I know precisely ZERO single women within a thousand-mile radius of me (literally), and if they're within even ten years of my age, they are probably far happier with their vibrators than they would be with putting up with a man's crap, so really, how the hell am I supposed to start over? Please phrase all answers in the form of a question. Show all work. If you complete the exam before time is up, sit quietly until dismissed. Make sure you include photo of your sense of humor.

    • Well, That Didn't Last Long...

Amanda and I are no longer a couple. Still have to go through the paperwork, but it's past the point of reconciliation now. She's found a new guy, and I really can't fault either of them for falling for the other. Still hurts like a bitch, though. She and I remain friends, and I hope she finds the happiness she wants this time. I do thank her for the four happy years we spent together. (well, except for the last 3 months, obviously...) Onward and upward, hopefully, for the both of us.

Which means that I suppose I'm back on the market. I'd like to advertise for a new wife, please. Preferably one that loves me devotedly, shares my interests, won't run out on me when I'm down, has a fantastic sense of humor, and is great in bed. Most other bits negotiable, although I'd prefer to keep the age difference reasonable this time. Heck, if you need a reference, you can always ask Amanda. She generally had quite nice things to say about me.

Goths, vampires, and nymphomaniacs need not apply.

(Aah, who am I kidding? Go ahead and apply--you're bound to be fun at parties.)

Hello, I saw your name when I was looking through some old forum threads. I remembered SvF and all the people who used to be involved with doing things like it. No body from that era really comes on here anymore or I don't see them posting much.

Just dropped by to say hello!

      In reply to Sevenar, #3:

Ooh. At least you didn't have to try to explain the renin-angiotensin enzyme fight. (Not that I truly understand it myself, but I am naturally curious about anything I'm prescribed, like my own particular antihypertensive, Diovan, which I believe is an ACE inhibitor, or something like that.)

Actually, renin/angiotensin is tomorrow. Lord help me.

One thing that puzzles me about your example, though. If sodium is so amazingly hydrophilic, (or rather, water is natrophilic), how exactly could one ever die from hyponatremia? Seems like the sodium doesn't really get a chance to stay in the urine, since it gets pushed back into the blood at several steps, bringing the water with it?

Yes, well, you see, this is an ULTRA simplified view. I was horrified to discover on Thursday that these students didn't know the term "osmolarity" or the concept of an osmotic gradient. I started to go through that and then said that they would get that later.... there is just no time for this in this class. So I told them I was REALLY simplifying it and I had to say that sodium, (and mannitol) both soak up water like a sponge.

Because of the magical elves. ...with the sponges that live on sodium ions....

      Hey, if it works...

      Sigh.

Now that you mention it, that ER episode did have a black patient, and it was a cough, not a sneeze, that prolapsed the eyeball. Although the special FX department had nearly the entire ball protruding from the socket, which, as you've proven, is anatomically impossible.

Actually, what I said was that it is impossible for the eye to dangle from a string... When the lens slips back, the eye does look as though it is popped out of the orbit... it looks like the way the eyes look on the Simpsons... it looks really REALLY awful.

Now I am dying to see how they did it on ER....
