      Nothing to say! Grasping...at...straws...

Okay, maybe I'll just link to this thing I'm watching.
It's called Mario Marathon. Three guys have resolved to sit through the weekend and play Mario games non-stop in an effort to raise money for a charity called Child's Play. Now that I think about it, maybe I should have mentioned this on friday when they started (stupid hindsight).

Nevermind, it's over now. AND I MISSED THE END! WAH!

On another note, Matt got The Conduit today. I haven't played it yet but the first impression I got was that single player looked pretty fun but multiplayer seemed to lag like all hell. However, they were having connection problems over there today (we even tested with they usually flawless MarioKart Wii) so that may have been the cause.
I have played it now and yes it is quite fun. His connection works fine now and multiplayer runs smoothly, save for a few technical glitches. But even so I may not purchase it myself, I kind of want to get my hands on the Metroid Prime Trilogy.

That's it I guess, see you guys later.

    • Punch Out!! Review (4 realz!)

      Shade180

Sorry for the delay, I've been preoccupied playing Pokemon Platinum and Final Fantasy IV: The Afteryears. So without further delay...

Punch Out!! is a re-imagining of a classic NES boxing game. You're put into the shoes (or gloves if you want a pun) of the ultimate underdog, Little Mac. Your goal is to fight your way through three challenging circuits in order to become the world champ.

Visually, this is a very stylish game. It has cell-shaded graphics that fit the cartoony personalities portrayed in the game. It really is a good looking game. There isn't really much else to say about that. I will say that rather than having fully animated character intros, they use still drawn images to give the player an idea of what each fighter does during there downtime.

The audio in this game is quite excellent. Each character has their own remix of the main theme to fit their country of origin. Speaking of which, said characters are fully voiced and speak in their native tongue giving the game a feeling of authenticity. The lack of subtitles for these characters, however, might leave some people a little confused but their absense adds to the experience. If I have one complaint though, it's that Doc Louis' voice-overs don't really seem as good as other characters.

Obviously, the most important part of this game is gameplay. Contrary to what you may think this game isn't actually considered a boxing game, rather it is seen more as a puzzle game. The object is to study your opponent's tactics, find the proper way to respond to each move, and locate and exploit any holes or weaknesses in their strategy; punching randomly will get you nowhere. Punching at key moments with specific punches may earn you stars which you can use to pull off special "star punches" that inflict much more damage.
The game re-introduces you to ten Punch Out!! characters, two Super Punch Out!! characters, and, disappointingly, only one original character, Disco Kid. (However, meeting certain requirements in the game unlocks one additional fighter to take on; a certain banana-lovin' ape actually). Each character is an over-the-top stereotype of their respective countries, but in no way should anyone be offended by that, they're so greatly exaggerated you can't help but laugh (Bear Hugger is actually one of my favorite characters for that specific reason).
If the game has any short-comings it's just that: It's short. The main story can be beaten in less than an hour if you know what you're doing. But to make up for this, a new game mode was added: Title Defense. After claiming your victory over the world champ, you need to defend your title. You are challenged by each fighter again, but now their strategies are a little different and, in some cases, they've compensated for their weaknesses. This mode is MUCH harder and will really test your skill and reflexes.
I should probably mention that the game has two primary control types: Wii Remote only, and Wii Remote + Nunchuk combo. For the latter, you swing the remote for a right punch and the nunchuk for a left punch. But honestly, in a game like this the milliseconds you save with a button press compared to a punching motion makes all the difference and just feels more like the original. The game is also compatible with the Wii Balance Board which you can use to dodge by leaning left or right. Needless to say this is pretty pointless and is less reliable.

So to summarize: Stylish, cell-shaded grapics, an internationally diverse soundtrack and lots of different languages, and very accessible, old-school controls makes for a must have game on the Wii and a true retro experience. And, hey, you might have a laugh or two on your rise to glory.

      9.5/10

And if you're wondering if I'll do a review for Final Fantasy IV: The Afteryears, the answer is no. I have never played Final Fantasy IV so I really have no idea who these characters are or what their backstories are. It's still fun though. Hard, but fun.

    • Punch Out!! Review...

      Shade180

...coming soon to a journal near you!

Yes, I have the game; no, I'm not ready to review it. I haven't quite beaten the game yet and if it's anywhere near as difficult as the previous Punch Out!! games I will never beat it. I'll just see how far I can get. It's fun I'll say that.
Also, Bear Hugger is awesome. Over-the-top Canadian stereotypes for the win.

I also had a chance yesterday and today to test drive some new games that Matt bought as well, those being:
      Pictobits (DSiWare)
New Play Control Donkey Kong Jungle Beat (Wii)
      MadWorld (Wii)

Pictobits is a fun, fast-paced, and addictive puzzle game. Combined with retro 8-bit graphics and music, and innovative gameplay it's a must have for DSi owners. If you liked Tetris DS, you'll love Pictobits.

I never played the original Jungle Beat but I would assume Wii Remote and Nunchuk controls probably sound more appealing than wailing on bongos. The controls work well but the way DK moves is a little frustrating; he usually won't jump as high or as far as you want him to. But I suppose if you want an innovative side-scrolling platformer on Wii, then Jungle Beat is the way to go. Plus, it's cheaper than most games, just be prepared to flail your arms wildly, you can get exhausted fairly quickly playing this game.

MadWorld is an over-the-top, ultra violent, hilarious, and stylish game. The graphics are in the style of a black and white graphic novel and it works well. It's incredibly violent and bloody, but the kills are so over-the-top and ridiculous that you can't help but laugh, and this is complemented by the funny and vulgar commentary of the two announcers voiced by Greg Proops and John Di Maggio. For those out there who complain about there not being enough hardcore games on Wii, pick up MadWorld, you won't be disappointed.

Three reviews in a nutshell. That should tide you over until my Punch Out!! review. If not, buy one of the games and keep yourself entertained.

First off, I'd like to apoligize for my extended absense, it's just that since I moved back home I've had to share one computer with my family since they didn't have wireless internet. I gave up trying to get on the computer when someone else was home because even if I sat down someone was going to hover over me until I got up and that makes me a tad uncomfortable.

BUT! Now we have wireless internet. That means I'll be getting online more often and making more posts (hopefully). And to make up for my absense, I posted another Robot Master pic in my images, check it out.

I plan on buying Punch Out!! on Wii when it comes out so hopefully I'll have one of my tl;dr reviews for you guys. Look forward to that.

Anyways, to those of you who are still watching me, later.

Hey, guys, long time no see. Been preoccupied with life stuff lately so don't expect to hear much from me. Just thought I'd let you know I'm still around.

In other news, I'm writing this journal in the DSi web browser. It's not mine but it's still neat.

    • Cue Robot Master Intro Theme

      Shade180

Well guys, college is over, my work term is completed and I'm headed home for an undetermined amount of time. This is where the job search begins and I make the next big step in my life. What does this mean for you? Basically you won't see me as much since I won't be online as often. But I'll try and drop a line whenever I can.

Now for the reason behind the title up there. If any of you had a look at my profile over the past few weeks, you may have noticed that it said I was currently doing some drawings. In my recent state of Megaman obsessiveness I got inspired by these videos (this one, and this one) to design and draw my own Megaman Robot Masters. This may be the best original project I've ever done. Over the next week or so I'll be posting them in my images for all to enjoy as well as provide my personal notes on the character.

The first Robot Master, Lava Man, can be found in my images.

    • Deadly Creatures

      Shade180

So I bought the game Tuesday and beat it Wednesday so now I'll review it (needless to say it's a short game).

Deadly Creatures is a game I had been looking forward to for a few months now, so really had high hopes for the game. It's good, but has some bothersome issues as well. If you don't know about the game, basically you play as a Scorpion and a Tarantula, alternating between the two each chapter. This isn't some Pixar thing where they have big eyes and a human-like mouth and talk to one another, they're portrayed how they are meant to be; creepy, crawly, and overall realistic.

The story actually involves two humans (voiced by Billy Bob Thorton and Dennis Hopper) who, as you discover while playing, are seaching for some treasure buried in the desert. Witness to these events are our petit protaganists, although why two simple bugs would decide to get involved in this situation is beyond me.
The game has a creepy atmosphere, very fitting for this game. The music always sets the mood perfectly and some of the objects in the environment actually made me say "What the hell happened here?"

Let's talk about our 'heroes' for a sec. The Tarantula they say is the stealth character, although I hardly see how, he learns one move later on that's even remotely stealthy, but he is fast and is the main one for platforming (sorta), using webs to grapple from wall to wall and such. The Scorpion is the real fighter, learning combos, powerful moves, and he has the ability to execute finishing moves that are super fuckin' awesome, although he is a bit slow. Overall though, I like exploration parts better with the Tarantula, and combat is more fun with the Scorpion.

Speaking of combat, the enemies you face in this game are pretty awesome. You run into things like Wolf Spiders, Black Widows, other Scorpions and Tarantulas, and later you encounter bigger enemies like lizards and rats. Bosses are pretty unique too. Usually instead of directly fighting them, you have to avoid them and find a means of escape because, let's face it, these little bugs don't stand much of a chance against things like Gila Monsters and Rattle Snakes in a head-to-head battle.

But with every great game comes the flaws. My biggest complaint is that there seems to be a few camera and collision issues, the latter of which is generally caused by invisible walls. Since both characters can walk up walls, they placed invisible walls in places they don't want you to climb. Hitting one may make your character twitch a bit. I've actually hit them a few times got myself flipped upside down as if I just fell from somewhere, resulting in slight falling damage. The worst part is, they basically made the game seem so realistic that it's hard to tell where you can climb and where you can't. The camera causes some issues as well. There is only one button that adjusts the camera and that centers it behind your character. That makes it difficult to use in some places, it's a little difficult to explain, just trust me on this one. I encountered a pretty bad glitch at one point too regarding collision. I made a wrong move while crawing on the wall as the Tarantula and 'twitched' (caused by invisible walls most likely) into a piece of bramble, causing me to fall off the wall and into the bramble patch below. This fall probably should have killed me but instead I was now stuck in the bramble and forced to kill myself and start from my last save.

Another thing I like about this game is the humor. Usually when you encounter the two humans they might say something funny. One such occurance involving horse feces and another is a story about a guy getting stung by a scorpion that crawled out of the toilet. The final boss battle is quite humorous as well.
There are unlockables but it's just art galleries (beautiful art, mind you). You can also watch interviews with the game's two voice actors which is pretty neat. One thing that I really loved was the main menu. It looks empty at first but wait a second and bugs will come onscreen and start moving about. Their movements look incredibly realistic, I find it enjoyable to watch, although someone with arachnaphobia would probably get a bit uneasy but that just shows how realistic it is.

Overall, the game is hindered a bit by twitch-inducing invisible walls, slight camera trouble and collision issues, but the innovative idea of controlling some of the most feared creatures on Earth and giving them the intelligence to do things they wouldn't normally do is really fun and somewhat scary when you think about it.

I found out today that Deadly Creatures is now in stores. But I'm not sure if I'm willing to dole out sixty bucks for it. I suppose what I should do is use the fifty dollar gift card I got for Christmas and pay the remainder in cash. I've been waiting for this game for a while now but I'm also tight on cash and it's even worse with no source of income. What do you guys think I should do?
