Every year at this time, I write the same journal.
I write in response to the anniversary of the bombing of the F. Murrah Abraham building in 1995. Only in part due to the event, but most specifically to the relevance that the date itself, April 19th, has to a specific kind of terrorist. I have written about that because it is unique among potential terrorists and virtually unknown/ignored by the public. I see in this story and the history of this event; the bigotry, self-satisfied ignorance, partisan misdirection and institutionalized myopia and dysfunction that has plagued our national security and public discussions. Every year since 2005 I've written... writing at times enraged, respectfully, analytically.. but mostly angrily. It's been a trigger to set me off on a long rant.

But this year I don't feel any of that.
      And it's kind of nice.

We went to Oklahoma City this last year and got to visit the Memorial.
Maybe that's part of it. And maybe it's been long enough and events have changed enough that it's just no longer relevant. And maybe it's just because lately I've been less engaged in the community and because journals no longer function well as personal journals. But for whatever reason, I'm not consumed with this year's anniversary.

So, after 10 years of writing about it, all I've got for you is pictures from our visit.

    • Travel Ughs

I've been looking up flights for a big summer vacation for Shelia and me. I'm a cheap bastard so I want to work the system and get the best prices I can and maybe also get a reasonably pleasant experience without 6 hour layovers or arriving at midnight and needing to find our hotel. So I'm using multiple aggregate flight search engines. Trying to get the broadest range of possible outcomes. During the middle of the week, I ran searches for travel dates that occurred in the middle of the week (away from weekends or Holidays) with each of these various aggregate search engines and logged all of the best results for price, connection time, airline, etc. Then did the same searches for travel dates on weekends which would make the best use of my PTO time from work to judge whether it really was cheaper to fly in the middle of the week on those specific dates to our specific locations. And evaluate if the price difference was worth it to get a couple extra days in an exotic locale. Then I repeated all those searches over the weekend and at various other days of the week to see if running searches on different days really made any significant difference in the results across the spread of options I selected using the multiple aggregate search engines I liked best. I also tried some unconventional bullshit. I understand I might be able to find a roundtrip to Hawaii for ~$500 because it's a domestic flight. And since it's more than halfway out into the ocean, maybe I could get some cheaper round trip tickets to the orient piggy-backed in between those dates. So naturally, I included every messed up permutation of that idea across all days of searching and booking too.

Now I don't pretend to be particularly tech savvy. But I want to try to use my tools as best I can. I know the airlines and presumably all these search engines will log cookies and caches and cream and use this data to raise prices on people who are hesitating too much ... just to make them panic and get off the pot. At the very least, they don't want to be giving me any cheaper rates if I keep repeating the searches. Right? So I download Chrome, which I consider a waste of time because a browser should just open webpages and if a webdesigner doesn't design his page to work with the most used browser on the planet then they're a hipster fuckwad and I would rather suffer through the sludge they make of their site for ie users than acquiesce to their hipster bullshit. (This very beloved site comes to mind) But in this case we're talking about maybe saving a few shekels. So I download new foreign, unnecessary software and delete cache and open up a new window in incognito mode. But wait... there's more. It's late and I'm tired and working myself up with frustration at all these details that seem to change at random from one search to another.

So I bite the bullet and pay for a VPN service because 12 bucks is worth the potential of saving a couple hundred bucks. Download yet another piece of software just for the purpose of improving my anonymity and now I'm closing out all windows, clearing cache, resetting my fake IP address and launching a new window in incognito mode for each search I run across any of the multiple aggregate search engines (and messed up alternate route attempts) for the ultimate price and itinerary. It's a convoluted web of contradictory and bizarrely nonsensical flight paths and prices. But across the white noise of 12:05am flights with 3 connections in an Air Asia flight dba Delta operated by 'Seattle Slim's tinmetal works and aeroplane associated services' I think I'm sensing a pattern.

It seemed like weeks ago when I started this process and Shelia's trying not to show how on edge my insanity has been making her. But now I think I've finally got something to show her for my efforts and her patience. Something that will ensure I'm not left wondering if we could have done better. So I pull up all my 27 8×10 color glossy pictures with circles and arrows and a paragraph on the back of each one explaining what each one was to be used as for itineraries we might choose. I explain that I have seen some good prices at about $1,100 but for the time/dates and reasonable flights of our choice we are probably going to get one of ... THESE... and I present her with 3 options at about $1,500-$1,700 each.

She looks at me. Looks at the screen. Blinks 3 times.
Then says... "but this is $1,100'... and shows me her laptop where she pulled up a quote for the precise dates we want on good carriers and with good times. She just absent mindedly pulled that up last night while I was too busy to talk to her and she tried to get my attention but I 'shushed' her and she left me alone. When she tries to select the flight, it informs her it timed out and then it was gone.

I got bored with all the traditional sports a long time ago.
And for good reason. They're boring. But my interest in sport has been reawakened a little bit when Shelia and I were introduced to Australian Rules Football. Their preseason tournament starts tomorrow and then shortly after we'll have nearly 7 months of Footie to entertain us.

Here's my American primer on what this unique sport is like:
      It's exactly like American Football.
That's right. It's just good old American Football... but with some little tweaks to make it awesome.
      Let me explain how...

We'll start by just imagining a group of 25 yr old guys playing American football on a Saturday afternoon.
Then... we start making some subtle changes to how they play. And soon you'll have the hang of Footie.

      1) the one big change up front is just that the ball is live. It's always live. They don't stop for huddles. They don't stop the clock or the game when someone gets tackled or when the ball hits the ground. They rarely even stop the clock, or play on the field even, if someone gets hurt and has to be escorted off the field. They play around them. They don't stop when possession changes either. If the ball's always live, then whoever picks it up has possession and it's as simple as that. So they don't stop to have 'downs' 1, 2, 3 or 4... they just don't stop. They don't stop the clock even if the ball goes out of bounds. Someone from the side just throws it back on the field and everyone dives for the ball.
So now you're imagining American football if the ball was always live.

Next... 2) take away the scrimmage line. If the ball is always live and everyone is running after it and team possession of the ball changes instantly whenever someone new grabs the ball, then it just doesn't make sense to try to enforce a line down the field everyone has to stay to one side of. So now, all the players are spread all over the field from one end to another, hoping one of their people will pass the ball to them. And likewise there are defenders spread out to make sure that doesn't happen.

      3) This gets pretty dangerous now that people can come up behind you and hit you without warning. But no one would want to make it a no-contact sport. It is still just like American football after all... except the ball is live and there's no line of scrimmage. So the compromise is to make it a partial contact sport. It's still a contact sport but not a full contact sport. You have to hit the other guys only in the chest or upper stomach. After all, these are the place where they keep the ball, right? Other than that... no head, throat, back or below-the-waist punches. So go ahead and full on tackle the other players with full force. Just limit it to places where they hold the ball and eliminate the gratuitous violence for violence's sake.

      4) Since you eliminated a lot of areas people get hit... they don't need all those pads or helmets. So now they just wear basketball uniforms and cleats.

      5) It is pretty hard to score a touchdown in traditional football without an offensive line there to protect you. So they came up with an inventive change: Double the Goal Posts. OK, this isn't just like American Football... it's like American Football TIMES TWO. You set up two posts and then you set up two more on the outside of the first two. So there's 4 posts in the endzone. You can get the ball through the middle posts and score 6 points just like you do in American Football. And you can score 1 more point just like we do with the afterkick. But in this case instead of it being an after-attempt, it's any attempt that misses the center goals but still gets you inside the two outer posts.

      6) But even though they made the scoring area wider, that doesn't help if no one can reach those goalposts. So they decided to make it easier to score from farther out. In Australian rules Football you can score those 6 points by just kicking the ball through the center uprights from anywhere you're at on the field. But not any kick... you only get the full 6 points if you kicked it right in the middle without it hitting posts or people as it goes through. You still get that one point score if it glances off someone's hand or goalpost or inside the outer set of posts... but the main 6 point score has to be a clean kick through the center pair of posts. And now, no one ever runs the ball through the endzone, since you get your full points from kicking it in from 50 meters away.

      7) They've come up with a few other changes along the way, like how they pass the ball and the shape of the field. But those are just cosmetic details. Differences in form rather than substance. It's essentially the same thing as American football once you've accepted changes 1-6.

Not the quality of the movies nominated this year... but our ability to be able to see as many of the nominated movies as possible. I'm still, and forever, upset that it's impossible to see foreign films or documentaries before the Oscars. It's a permanent problem each year that many of those films are never released in the theaters or made available online until months or years after they were nominated for Oscars. That's some real bullshit right there. I can see the crappy second tier films that got nominated for sound mixing... but I can't see the best movies made from around the world.

Well... it's stupid and they aren't making it any better. But despite that, we've done pretty well at seeing as many films as possible this year so we can go into this informed and confidant in our opinions.

We've seen: Birdman, American Sniper, Boyhood, The Grand Budapest Hotel, The Imitation Game, Selma, The Theory of Everything, Whiplash, Foxcatcher (Steve Carrell), Two Days One Night (Marion Cotillard), Still Alice (Julianne Moore), Gone Girl (Rosamund Pike), Wild (Reese Witherspoon), The Judge (Robert Duvall), Into the Woods (Meryl Streep), Nightcrawler (Screenplay), Inherent Vice (Screenplay), Ida (Foreign), Begin Again (Song), Big Hero 6, Boxtrolls, How to Train Your Dragon 2, The Tale of the Princess Kaguya, Mr Turner (Cinemtography), Interstellar (Sound 1), Unbroken (Cinematography), The Hobbit (Sound 1), Maleficient (Costume), Begin Again (Song), Lego Movie (Song), Guardians of the Galaxy (Make Up), Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (F/X), Cap Amer: Winder Soldier (F/X), XMen Days of Future Past (F/X), Last Days of Vietnam (Doc), Virunga (Doc), Finding Vivian Maier (Doc), Boogaloo and Graham (short), Aya (Short), Butterlamp (Short), Parvaneh (Short), The Phone Call (Short), Feast (AnimShort), Bigger Picture (AnimShort), A Single Life (AnimShort), The Dam Keeper (AnimShort), Me and My Moulton (AnimShort)

We got ourselves the new Sara Palin Michelle Bachmann down in Iowa and they let her give one of the 78 teabagger rebuttals against America the networks broadcast the other day. It was some rambling nonsense about having to wear bread bags over her feet when it rained because she was so poor and thrifty or some such bullshit. My mom did that for me too but it didn't make me want to take away women's right. In fact, just last week I saw it on Facebook as one of those things old people pass back and forth to reminisce about how great nostalgia is. I'm going to assume one of Joni's minions got the idea from Facebook and ran with it. We're going to have 6 years of this embarrassment. But at least it can be fun. Local hipster tee shop has produced a new product in response and I want one.

    • Happy Birthday J.C.!

My papa, Johnny Chuck "original ol man Sloe" - (No, no one's ever called him that) - turned 75 years of age on December 24th.

I wanted to get him a special gift but he's got too much stuff already. Every time we visit, he takes us out to the garage and tries to get us to take more stuff that belonged to him or his parents. So at this point... I look more toward consumables than toward objects. That's why I decided to get him a bottle of scotch.

      OeQJiWI.jpg

I included a letter with the bottle to explain the gift choice, so I'll let that do the talking.

This bottle is filled with a custom blend of scotch whiskeys from www.whiskyblender.com .
They provide 7 different unique scotch whiskeys and allow you to choose the exact blend you want to create from among those flavors for your own special label. This is the label I created for you, Papa.

They describe each flavor in flowery adjectives that I had trouble trying to relate with in terms of how they might actually taste. But I did my best to select flavors with an idea in mind to balance the best tastes as well as personalizing it in a meaningful way. So this is an experiment; which I hope turns out well with you enjoying this blend.

In simple terms they have a flavor that is nutty/grainy. Another has flavor of pudding/chocolate. Two others are fruitier. Two are peatier. And one has hints of the sea. Because the name Marston is derived from people living in "marsh settlements' and the Schlobohms come from Dithmarschen which is lowland, boggy countryside... I emphasized peaty flavors in the mix. Next I blended in a strong balance of fruity flavors in tribute to the sloe berries from which the name Schlobohm is derived. And finally, I included a taste of the sea to represent the Schlobohm closeness to the sea in Dithmarschen and our family's immigration across that sea.

      XzV13hS.jpg

That's the story. These are the specifics about the blend.
It is a 700ml bottle. I divided the recipe up in 20 parts of 35ml per part.
11 parts are of a peatier flavor.
      7 parts are fruiter.
      2 parts salty.

      It breaks down as:
6 parts (210ml) of "Smoke on the Water' - Very peaty with just a little bit of heather. The light smokey mouthfeel comes with a taste of chocolate that gives way to a lingering fresh maltyness.
5 parts (175ml) of "Toffee Chew' - Rich chewy sherry, buttery bitterness, raisins and soft malty body. Leafy, toffee, treacle sweetness with a hint of peat at the back.
4 parts (140ml) of "Soft and Fruity' - Round bodied with a delicate sweetness. A slightly nutty oak character with strong citrus flavours and a wee spoonful of warm, moist fruit cake.
3 parts (105ml) of "Vanilla Fudge' - Fresh and sweet, caramel apples with a light floral note. Soft yet pronounced, with good body. Creamy smooth with a taste of buttery vanilla.
2 parts (70ml) of "Taste of the Sea' - Of medium-weight, medium-dry and rich with an almost grapey aroma and just a touch of the sea, it is clean, smooth and rich with a salty tang.

      Happy 75th Birthday, Papa

      NVHKjVI.jpg

I named this blend: Sloe Peat.
It is permanently stored in the whiskyblender.com's library with the code "WB33898' under this name.

If you, or anyone, want to order more of this specific blend in the future; you can go to the website www.whiskyblender.com '“ click the tab "SAFE' to enter their vault of saved blends and enter the code WB33898.

To celebrate the new year, we broke out the Bleigiessen kit. (Bly-geese-n)

      IovHKbw.jpg

It's a fortune telling game traditionally done on New Year's Eve to look at what you can expect in the next year. It's a type of sorcery known as molybdomancy in English. And now the name Bleigiessen doesn't seem so strange.

      jnh2Z4V.jpg

Here's Shelia in her red ninja monkey jammies and Jayne hat performing the ancient ritual.

      mR7n8Zc.jpg

One selects a lead ingot from the available shapes (daleks are apparently a common item... or maybe that's supposed to be a castle tower) and cooks it like heroin.

      9dfYmTC.jpg

And then you plop the molten mass into water where it will mystically form into a meaningful shape.

      GOsvkMx.jpg

See? Aren't those just amazingly insightful and inspiring to look at?

      ryF2hkV.jpg

Well looking at a guide of possible interpretations online and trying to guess what it was... we determined that Shelia had formed a lance and a dagger. The fortunes for those is that someone wants to fight with her and that she will be victorious. (Although I think it looked more like a comet or sperm... but the guide doesn't have those in it.)

      vt1ki1n.jpg

I picked an object that looks like a bottle of booze. Or maybe it was a ham leg. Anyway... melted it down.

      RDGHU4q.jpg

And it turned into this mess. My best guess is that it is a carp. Sort of a stylized interpretation using plenty of negative space, but yeah.. that's a carp. Which means I'm going to get an unexpected raise in pay.

Well I hope you all had a fun and safe NYE. And here's looking forward to a wonderful year full of victories and unexpected improvements in all our lives.

This has been a very good Christmas. Shelia and I went out and saw It's a Wonderful Life on the big screen at the local theater on Christmas Eve. Then came home and watched more Christmas shows and had a wonderful, relaxing day of opening gifts at home today.

      NqUgzi7.gif

Every year I win Christmas because I love Shelia more than she loves me and so naturally I get her more gifts than she gets me. That's how you do Christmas too, right? As a competition? Of course you do. Well this year, I've been dethroned. We tallied them up as we opened gifts and Shelia came out ahead.

      U1q3h6O.jpg

I got lots of great things like a straight razor set, all sorts of candies, a Wexter plushie and one amazing ushanka (Russian fur hat) among other fun things.

Shelia got herself a cunning new hat too along with other assorted goodies.

As we start Christmas Eve, I wish to bid you a Happy Festivus. Or at least that I hope you had a happy Festivus yesterday, on December 23rd.

We have our plain, unadorned aluminum pole up in the living room in the middle of all our other Holiday decorations. It's a mixed bag here in the Sloebomb household.

      vvFhhE8.jpg

I'm not a particularly good adherent to the traditions of Festivus.
There were no feats of strength, pitting Shelia and I in wrestling combat.

And my list of grievances is short.

First... FUCK the ass holes at exotic meats .com. I ordered buffalo steaks for my father and I called them today to check up on the order... and they asked me when I'd like them shipped?
WTF? THREE WEEKS AGO... when I ordered them... ass hole.

Second... the FedEx driver who reported he delivered a shipment to my door on Monday. I had two large UPS boxes on my doorstep Monday... but you didn't deliver shit. There was some kind of note in the tracking log about a weather interruption at the exact same time you logged that you delivered it. I wonder if you didn't really lose it or take it back to the office and forget about it. But it isn't here.

And some other sundry delivery shit too... but really, that's it.
      I'm done.

So what's crackin' amigo, wanna join up in this group and chat about films? Don't player hate, spit some game on this!

In other words, I'd appreciate it if you were to use some of that eloquence you've got hidden up that sleeve every once and a while.

I've always played Valve games on the PC because up until The Orange Box they were only released on it.

Most of the Valve games I've seen on console haven't been nearly as good than on the PC.

i like that they said straight-up... it's not going to rely nearly as much on twitch reactions to beat the puzzles but more on thinking things out to do them.

I just hope it's longer than the original. I could beat Portal in one sitting and the only thing that would pad it out was loading.

Well, actually, I just forgot to include a form showing where my investment income came from, so they claimed that my entire portfolio was pure income.

Once I file the form, I'll be fine.

You should also know Janelle Monae. I waited over two years for her debut to come out (she had a bitty LP that she toured on for a while) and it was completely worth it.

You'd never heard Adele?! She's amazing. Her first album is one of the most listened to on my ipod. The only reason she's not a bigger star (and yes, this is the only reason) is that she doesn't have the Hollywood look.

I tried watching those films, but I remember getting caught up in something else. I'll have to go back and watch 'em now.

I've never had that problem. Not logging on at home with DSL nor at my office at school. Hmmm.

Stupid question - are we sure the problem isn't on your end or with your provider?

    • KWierso AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

Yeah, in theory that feature makes sense, but the LeSabre actually does a pretty good job of filtering out road noise already, so you really notice the volume changes as you speed up and slow down.

How is the site unstable for you?

I really have not had any issues. Other than not being able to only log in to one site and have normal access to all the rooster teeth sites, I have no real problems with them right now.

Thanks to all of your picture uploading yesterday, I listened through the soundtrack for 'American Beauty'.

      Thank you, good sir.

I had forgotten how incredible that soundtrack is.
