      Chapter 2: The New Age

The Commander interrogated them for what seemed like an eternity. Johnson and Miranda were becoming restless with the Commanders endless questions and the Arbiters patient responses. A crowd was beginning to form around the small troupe. A group of grunts sat and chattered noisily while a group of elites looked on in fascination.
“Dark human!†one the Elites spoke up. Johnson turned and cast him a withering glare. “Dark Human! You wielded one of our weapons yes?â€Â
“Yeah that’s right!†Johnson beamed, pleased at the response. “I used that fancy sniper rifle your damn Jackals are always using. Nice piece of machinery, but it burns like hell sometimes.â€Â
“Human…why did you assist him?†Another elite asked. Johnson shrugged quickly and laughed. “Your mannerisms are most curious human. Tell me, does your species behave like this; all of them I mean?†Miranda shifted in her seat. She rose her hand. Johnson burst out laughing. The elites jumped back in surprise.
“Shit, Commander!†Johnson hooted with laughter. “What are we? Back in basic again?â€Â
“Stow it Sergeant!†Miranda glared at Johnson. “No, not all humans act in the brash manner of Johnson here.†They turned briefly as the conversation between the Arbiter and the Commander grew loud and some howls were exchanged.
“You humans, have most curious names.†One the grunts squeaked. Miranda wandered over to the helm of the phantom and talked with the pilot. Johnson watched her leave. The grunt that had spoken stood perfectly still and was looking up at Johnson curiously. Johnson’s face broke into a wolfish grin. Johnson picked up the small creature and shook it critically, flipping it on its back and tossing up and down. Johnson was grinning from ear to ear. His smile faded when he saw the faces of the elites. An elite growled in warning and another unsoldered his carbine.
“Errr…. hurrrgh…put me down…. human!†the grunt grumbled indignantly. Johnson set the grunt down who waddled back to the group. Johnson cleared his throat.
“Sorry about that. That was something I’ve wanted to do since this war started.†Johnson grinned dryly. “You see when I joined the corps…†He was interrupted by alien laughter. Miranda had taken the helm and the pilot was laughing along with his crew. Miranda was trying desperately to fly the drop ship, but to no avail. The elite tapped his head.
“Neural implant; I fly by using a computer in my cerebellum.†The Elite spoke proudly. There was a low growl and a short authorative bark. The group of Covenant scattered back to their stations. The Arbiter and the Special Ops Elite walked towards them. The Arbiter whispered to the Pilot who then nodded and faced the computer in front of him.
“Humans. We have decided-“ The Arbiter began.
“Wait a second…you really are starting to piss me off with this ‘human’ crap.†Johnson snorted indignantly. “I am Johnson. Johnson. She…is Miranda…Miranda. Got it? Get it right for the love of God!†The Arbiter nodded slowly and looked towards the Spec Ops Commander. The Spec Ops commander shook his head. The Arbiter grunted.
“Johnson.†The Arbiter said slowly. His face broke into what seemed to be a smile and point at them as he spoke. “Miranda…. Johnson…. Miranda. You have most curious titles…in any case, I will respect that.†Johnson sat down next to Miranda. The Arbiter and the Spec Ops Commander sat down across from them.
“We are taking you to our ship.†The Special Ops Commander explained, rising to his feet. “We have freed the humans that were kept within our jails. You will be most pleased to here that they are all being given the greatest hospitality we can muster. We are most regretful of the conflict we have endured.†He walked forward and turned regally to face the Arbiter. “Now the Arbiter has been requested by the Elders to make a statement to rest of the Covenant. You are to determine what must be done about the Brutes here above the ring and the Brute fleet at Earth attacking the humans there. We have over seventy ships at our command here…as well as…â€Â
“Earth…Johnson; they could need our help right now!†Miranda whispered fiercely to Johnson. “The covenant fleet could turn the tide of battle…we could end this war in a matter of hours.†Johnson looked at her intently and nodded.
“You need not to keep your voice so low human…errr Miranda…we can hear all that you say very well. I suspect that your hearing is somewhat inferior to ours.†The Arbiter said lopsidedly. “We will proceed to Earth once the Brute fleet here has been dispatched of. We dare not leave any Brutes alive.â€Â
“And what of our brothers at High Charity, Arbiter? When can we return there?†one of the younger Elites piped up nervously. The Special Ops Commander looked at the Arbiter and shook his head. The Arbiter sighed and stared at the floor.
“Those within our Holy city’s walls are with our fathers now…we can never go back to our city.†The Arbiter said remorsefully. The Elites posture faded and they slouched grievously. One of the grunts sniffed loudly. The ship began to shake. There was a loud grunt.
“We’re commencing our final approach; everyone prepare yourselves!†The pilot growled from the helm.

The Chief continued to toy with the immense lift that had been deactivated to prevent his ascent. Cortana would’ve really been useful here. Ahhh Damn it! The Chief jumped back as a flurry of sparks flew from the control console.
“Son a bitch.†The Chief cursed loudly. He looked around for a card or a button. He saw the dead Brute captain had a large blue disk on his armor. He reached down and grabbed the small disk. He turned and inserted it into the small slot facing the lift. The lift began to glow blue. He readied himself and hurled himself into the great blue haze. As he shot upwards at tremendous speed, the Chief heard a metallic clanking from above. Then the lift died out, the blue haze now sending the elevator shaft into total darkness. He quickly flicked on his head light.

“Now my brothers…†the consolers began. Titus grabbed the Arbiter and pulled him aside. They spoke to the side, away from the noise of the crowd.
“I will take a legion of troops to High Charity to determine the fate of our people there.†Titus said quietly. “And evacuate any if need be.â€Â
“Commander, you cannot…It is suicide. The great sanctuary has been defiled. I cannot allow-“ The Arbiter protested loudly. Titus nodded slowly and turned to walk back to the stage. The Arbiter sighed in resignation. He looked at the ceiling and then back at Titus. Applause was heard behind them. “You will take two legions of Elites and a handful of hunters…you have twelve hours.†Titus barked loudly and saluted. Johnson stepped down from the stand after giving his speech. The Arbiter returned to face the Marines atop the podium.
“Human…Johnson… your humans are to control the bridge and command the ship into battle. This is going to be the lead ship in the battle that lays ahead…will you refuse such an honor?â€Â
      “Not a chance, squidy.†Johnson retorted.
“Very well human.†The Arbiter faced the crowd. “We shall cut through this abomination and defeat any brutes that stand in our way! Onwards now, to victory and to the dawn of a new age!†The crowd roared its approval and dismissed to their stations as red lights began to flash, signaling battle stations. Johnson lept onto the stage and turned on heel to face his Marines.
“Get in formation Marines!†Johnson began to move and talk very quickly, barking out orders as fast as he walked. “Schmidt you have the helm! Cortez, O’Neil, Rogers and Galantine have navigation. Simmons and Springfield, I want you both on communications with the Arbiter. Commander Keyes, you have engine control. I will take the deck and Command points. Jonesy, take the rest of the marines to the main guns and get em ready!†The Marines began to walk to their posts. Johnson stared and jumped up one level higher on the command deck so all could see him.
“What the hell is, a goddamn luxury cruise? Get your asses movin!†The Marines stopped and stared. Johnson spoke again strutting around the deck. “Move it people! I have seen better Marines in a prison shower! Worm-sperm every damn one of you!†Johnson bellowed. The Marines scattered and ran for their posts. The Arbiter leaned over to Miranda.
“Do all of your leaders bellow and shout such as he?†the Arbiter asked incredulously, looking on at the irate Johnson. Miranda laughed.
“No…he’s one of a kind.†Miranda paused and looked at Johnson waving his arms wildly and sitting himself down in the Captains chair. Johnson turned and laughed insanely at the crew below him.
“Lets go ladies…we got a war to win!†The crew roared with cheers and applause. The Arbiter growled loudly. Miranda smiled at Johnson, who smiled back. Miranda walked over to the main engine controls and activated them, and the warship launched into orbit around the ring.

He continued upwards because of the speed, but he was beginning to slow down. The Chief scanned for a hold, a ledge; anything he could hold onto. The top of the lift was in sight and the Chief had enough speed to reach it. The door to the lift opened ahead, sending a bright beam of light into the hallway. The brute stared in wonder at the empty elevator. The brute leaned out over the edge and looked towards the bottom. This was met by a swift punch to the face. The brute stumbled backwards. He roared in fury and threw himself at the Chief who had pulled himself out of the elevator shaft. The Chief dodged to the side and swung his arm hard, connecting with the brute. The brute retaliated swinging backwards over the shoulder, catching the Chief to the on the head. He fell backwards into the metal wall, denting it and sending a loud echoing bang echoing threw the hallways. Shit…something probably heard that. The Chief rolled hard as the Brute charged. The Chief rose to his feet and dodged a swipe dealt by the Brute. The Chief connected with a flurry of punches and hard knee to the stomach. The brute roared in fury and lunged forward. The Chief grabbed the Brute by the fur and launched it with all his might. The Brute slammed into the wall, unconscious. The Chief pulled out his rifle and shot the fallen Brute. The Chief kneeled down and regained his breath. A red light began to blink, and a siren was heard in the distance. The chief looked behind him and saw that the lift was activated. He looked down and saw a squad of Brutes coming up behind him. He punched through the lift console, sending a burst of sparks outwards. The blue haze of the elevator shaft bean to fade and then it disappeared completely. The Chief listened intently and heard the puzzled shouts of the Brutes as they rose. The Brutes leveled off near him. The brutes faced him in shock; one of them snarled and raised his brute shot. The Chief shut the door quickly, dodging a shot that was fired. He listened for the cries as they fell to the ground below. Smiling with satisfaction, he took a step backwards and turned to face the hallway. He came face to face with a snarling, angry brute blocking his way. Then blackness; nothing.

The Marines followed Johnson and Miranda to the far end of the bridge where the Arbiter would give his statement. The Marines numbered about sixty and were the novelty aboard the ship. Curious onlookers gazed intently at their former foes and the Marines gazed back. Grunts crowded around the Marines as the Marines tried to get to their seats. The Arbiter stood on the main deck of the bridge as a single Hunter pushed forward an incredibly large box witch the Arbiter was to use as a podium. An elite wheeled a camera like device into place and the Arbiter signaled his readiness. An elite elder motioned for the Humans to follow them to follow. The elite lead them to a large clearing with the other elders. The Consoles all rose and offered the Humans their seats. The Special Ops Commander bowed and motioned to the Chief elder. The elder nodded and looked at the Arbiter, who also nodded. The Arbiter faced the camera. He readied himself as he thought of the millions of covenant that were now riveted to him; this one Elite who would determine their futures.
“My brothers and sisters of the Covenant,†His powerful voice echoed through the cavernous spaces of the bridge. The hair on the back of Johnson’s neck stood rigid. Miranda shivered briefly. “I come before you now with troubling news. It was revealed to me by the Great Oracle who had been foretold by our Great Prophecy.†He paused. “The Great Journey is He continued upwards because of the speed, but he was beginning to slow down. Miranda shivered briefly. “I come before you now with troubling news. It was revealed to me by the Great Oracle who had been foretold by our Great Prophecy.†He paused. “The Great Journey is false; a terrible curse that was created by the Forerunners to eliminate us all.†The Crowd murmured and a few of the elders shifted in their seats. “The Prophets have betrayed us,†the Arbiter’s voice began to grow louder and his tone became tense with anger. “They have led us to slaughter millions of innocence and have sacrificed our loved ones and our brothers for a cause none other than power. They have waged a war for the reasons of conquest. My brothers, I tell you that all we have fought for has been false.†He paused to let the words sink in. “Yet the war is not over for us. We shall continue this war until every Brute, every Prophet, and every single enemy of ours is dead or dying.†He waited for the applause to die down and then he continued. “Now, there are important matters to discuss here. I am now taking full control of the fleets as well as our ground forces with the consul’s approval.†The Arbiter glanced at the Consolers who rose and gave their verdict.
“We the counsel approve the decisions, Arbiter. May you rule with distinction and honor.†The Consul spoke as one. There was a thunderous cheer and applause from the Marines and the Arbiter raised his hands for silence.
“Now my brothers…to the task at hand. We are now at war with the Brute fleets that orbit the city of High Charity. The surviving fleets are to rendezvous at a location of my choosing. I am calling an end to all hostilities towards the humans; the fleet at Earth is to leave immediately and rendezvous with us. We will destroy the Brutes here and leave this abominable place. High Charity has been lost to the flood, and†The crowd grew deathly quiet as the shock settled in. “and, now we must do all that we can to find a new home and keep our way of life going. These humans you see here…†the Arbiter gestured to his right. The camera swiveled zooming in on the small group. “They are now our allies, our warriors; our brothers. Before they were hunted to extinction; I tell you, no further shall this slaughter go.†The Arbiter barked as the applause picked up again, this time mainly from the Marines seated near the consol. The Arbiter continued. “Next order of business…I have come to an extremely important conclusion about our brothers, the grunts, as well as the hunters.†The grunts chattered excitedly and expectantly and the hunters looked on in wonder. The Arbiter waited for silence. “The grunts and hunters, once slaves of the Covenant, are now free.†The grunts within the crowd cried with joy and the hunters shook their spikes and banged their shields in approval. The Arbiter barked and the noise died down. “The grunts are no longer required to fight in our ranks…they now have their own choices to make. Same goes for the hunters…which now brings me to this. We are no longer to be known as the Covenant; all that the covenant stood for and the blood shed with that name shall not be passed onto us. We are now nothing…we shall have no title, we shall have no names; we are but a remnant, a fraction of what we once were. And as such--â€Â
“Yes, yes, the Remnant!†an Elite called out from the crowd. The crowd roared in approval and the Arbiter held up his hands. He motioned for the Spec Ops Commander to approach the stand. They conversed for a moment; and growled in approval. The Spec Ops commander returned to his seat. The Arbiter faced the camera once more. The Arbiter beamed proudly. “So be it. We are now, and indefinitely shall be known as the Remnant.†The crowd roared in approval and the crowd all rose to its feet in applause. The Arbiter barked loudly for silence. “I am also honored to announce that we are entering the Nine Age of Reclamation and…the first age of Rebirth.†The Arbiter grew serious and raised his claw in the air, waving the sword that it held, causing total silence within the room. “All hands to their stations…all ships to the coordinates given by our new 2nd in command; the former Special Operations Leader, Titus.†The Arbiter stepped off the stage and Titus came to the podium, his fierce smile contrasting the great scar on the left side of his face. The crowd’s cheering was deafening. Titus strutted around, with his arms raised in triumph. He stopped at the podium and addressed the crowd.
“All ships are to converge on the following coordinates.†Titus typed in the coordinates and they appeared on the large screen behind them. “The humans on board our ships across the void are to be released and placed on the bridge…they will give valuable tactical data and strategies for the battle that lay ahead. Elite commanders and their crews are to follow the human orders without question. We are now turning over control of this bridge to the Arbiter and the humans…you have your orders…peace and courage to you all!†the crowd roared in approval as the Consolers and the Humans approached the stage.
“Now my brothers…†the consolers began. Titus grabbed the Arbite

Good job, (it's atheist by the way) people like you are the reason for the decline in Christianity. Maybe in the next millenia people will wake up to the fact that religions are nothing more than fairy tales to control the simple minded.

yeah, I was watching CNN and a cop was crying into the camers..."Tell my wife that I love her, tell her, please tell her i love her. Her name is...."

Then another cop was yelling at all the cops that deserted, asking them if they think they can really wear that badge. If they think they deserve it.

Another cop was also crying becaus eof how the city is turning out.

It was heartbreaking. I hate cops but I dont think they should be shot at when trying to help rescue people. How can you ask for help and then shoot the people who are trying to help??? It makes no sense, and it makes me very sad. The camera crews were with them when all of a sudden you hear gunshots and then mor egunshots. the cops said that 3 people just fired at them and they fired back trying to scare them away. No law, no order. Lord of the flies shit going on there and it breaks my heart.
