I was watching "How It's Made" yesterday, and while machining parts for a front-end loader, I saw this. They claim it's lubrication, but I think someone got a little too excited by the sight of big tools.

    • Screw Denver and Screw Its Snow

      SpaceLemur

So I'm flying back home for Christmas in Cleveland today... thank god. You wouldn't think a snow storm in Denver would affect a flight from Wichita, KS to Chicago, but it does. I figure, I've got some time to kill, and they have free wireless internet, I'll write a journal.

I got an automated call last night telling me that I'd been "rebooked" and need to call their reservation line. So I try calling, but there's something screwed up and it won't let my cell phone connect right. And, since that's the only phone I have, I have to go find a payphone to make the call. I have to go to Wal-Mart anyway, so I'll just use the one there.

After waiting a half hour on hold (in Wal-Mart mind you) I find out that "rebooked" means "you're flight's been canceled". And the earliest flight out? Sunday... Christmas Eve... 50 hours later. I call home and tell them I'll be late.... really late.

About an hour later I get a call from my uncle, who flies all the time. He says he'll try getting my ticket transfered to another airline. He ended up not being able to, but told me to go to the airport when I was supposed to anyway, and see what they could do.

They found a solution for me, albeit not the ideal one. Instead of flying to Chicago and on to Cleveland on United, I'll be flying AirTran to Atlanta and then Continental on to Cleveland. My bag however, is flying Continental to Houston and then to Cleveland. I'm going to get in 7 hours later than planned, but at least it's today.

So now I'm sitting in Midcontinent Airport, Wichita, KS. I have to wait for 3 more hours before AirTran will let me check in, and then another 4 for the flight, and then a 2 hour layover in ATL.

But, as I said, at least I'm getting in today. That means I can go to the Festivus celebration tomorrow, and the Browns game Sunday (free Luxury Suite seats from my uncle's company). I had originally planned to do Christmas shopping, but there's no time for that any more... luckily I got it almost all done already, just need to pick up a gift card, and that's nothing.

Well... that's it from Wichita. I might update later to report how it all went.

    • Not in Kansas anymore... wait yes I am

      SpaceLemur

So I guess I can update this...

I'm now offically a resident of the state of Kansas. I've been here two weeks now, and finished a whole week of work.

So far, so... boring. I really haven't done anything at work, since I still need to learn the software package we use for design. That'll be a 3 week process starting Monday. Once that's done I'll be doing structural engineering on engine nacelles for Boeing 777's.

They're way more interesting than they sound, trust me.

I still need to buy a crapload of furniture, but that'll have to wait until I've actually gotten a few paychecks. Until then, clothes sit on a shelf in the closet and the futon acts as the only seating in the apartment (unless you count the bed and the floor). No desk either, so the "office" is currently where I'm storing everything that I haven't unpacked... Most of which is stuff that goes on shelves I also don't have.

    • We're not in Kansas anymore... er, yet.

So I got a phone call the other day. They wanted me to come in for an interview. The catch? They're in Kansas. They're going to fly me out there for the interview July 24. I suppose they're really interested since they're spending about a grand for me to be there. Hopefully I get the job... even though it would mean moving to Wichita.

      Wish me luck.

EDIT (7/23): I've made it to Wichita... Interview tomorrow morning.

EDIT (8/8): Got the call this morning, I start Sept 15

    • I got it and it's good.

I got my 360 on Friday, and I've been playing it since then. I played Call of Duty 2 and Perfect Dark Zero, and beat them both on Normal and Agent respectively. Played them both online a little too, though I am a little disappointed with CoD2's online multiplayer since you can't make your own custom games.

As for graphics and all that, they look great. Threw in Halo 2, and even on a standard def. TV it looks better than on the Xbox. I'm really liking the ability to turn the system on and off with the controller, and in case there was some doubt, wireless controllers are way better than wired. The special RvB video on the LIVE Marketplace is funny. I've got the system hooked networked with my computer, so I can listen to the music and look at the photos I have stored.

So far the only problems I've had have involved LIVE, and I think that's at their end and not anything to do with my system, so I'm sure that will be fixed soon enough.

    • No luck...

So the good news was that I got moved up from 17 to 15 on the preorder list for the Xbox 360. The bad news? The shipment was cut down from 16 to 14, so I still have to wait until the next shipment. Best case scenario, they'll be coming in later this week, but I'm not counting on that. It's looking more like next week or the week after. I guess I can wait... it's better than the alternative.

    • Now it's a waiting game

      SpaceLemur

So I've picked up everything I preordered for the Xbox 360 except the system itself. This would include a second controller, spare battery, play and charge kit, Call of Duty 2, and Perfect Dark Zero. Only problem I have at this point is that I'm the first person on the second shipment of systems. Hopefully someone doesn't come in on day one to pick theirs up, so I can have theirs. I can't even go wait in line at Wal-Mart for a midnight release, since I have to work the midnight release at EB. Maybe I'll go across the street and start waiting at Target at 2am when I'm done.

On a brighter note to all this, I had everything paid off at full price before I started working at EB, so when I went in to pick up all my preorder stuff, they not only gave me the merchandise, but also cash back. That's just a fun experience. Walk into a store with nothing, walk out games and money.

    • I can't even remember how I got there

But I found a new webcomic called Pixel

I know it was linked from somewhere... or linked from somewhere that was linked from somewhere else...

Anyway, I've been reading it for like the last hour, and I've been enthralled. The art is simple and at the same time complex, and the writing has me wanting to talk like an arrogant art critic... you know, like using big words and stuff. It also has me wanting to make grandiose statements that have no meaning.

      In conclusion.... go read it

EDIT: Color has been added to this journal because I can.

    • Well this is just irritating

      SpaceLemur

I stopped in EB Games today to find out when I'm going to start working there (the week of Thanksgiving if anyone wondered), and while I was there I found out something. That store is getting in 16 Xbox 360's for launch day. The irritating part? I'm number 17 on the reserve list.

There is some good news. (No, it's not that I saved a bunch of money by switching to Geico) Of the first 15 people, 5 have only put down the minimum $50 to reserve it, so maybe one of them will drop off and I will get one on launch day. Otherwise, I shouldn't have to wait more than a day.

      Still... irritating.

That is one of my favorite quotes.

The pure and simple truth is rarely pure and never simple.

But, I can never remember who said it. Do you know?

Yeah, that was the ugliest game I've seen in a looooong time.

Prince doesn't take the rivalry seriously enough, either that or the players were overconfident.

Hey, I forgot to add the book thread to my watch list, so I missed your comment regarding Starship Troopers. I actually did catch that about the civil service, but being a former Marine, I am rather comment biased towards that aspect of the book. I love almost everything from Heinlein. Especially the Lazarus Long books. Gotta love Moon is a Harsh Mistress. Nothing like throwing rocks and making an unexpected BOOM! I just got my sons into the HG "Trilogy". They think it is hysterical! Wasn't so much a fan of Dune, though. Predictably, I am a big Honor Harrington (by David Weber) fan. Give me a girl who kicks ass like that, and it makes me wish I was born a (few?) centuries later...

Anyway, nice to meetcha. Stop by and chat sometime.

I hope your birthday's soon, otherwise you won't be getting hired at GameStop. Company policy is that you must be 18 to work there.

There was a checkbox on the application that said "are you 16 or over," though.
